T1 - Forces on rails in turns: A review N2 - Regardless of the mode of transportation, directional changes generate greater forces on the infrastructure as a result of the lateral load transfer and of the respective steering forces in the vehicles. In the case of Railway transportation, a concentrated damage occurs in the rail at the initiation of the turning maneuver, whose magnitude depends on the bogie´s yaw stiffness and on the level of friction at its centre plate. To mitigate such rail-damaging effects, some new designs have been proposed and used for the bogies´ wheelset. However, no new designs for the centre plate have been used. In this paper, a review of the causality for the forces arising during Railway Vehicle's turn negotiations, is presented, including the description of a modeling framework to analyze the influential Parameters for determining the magnitude of such forces. T1 - An overview of test standards and regulations relevant to the fire testing of pressure vessels N2 - Fire exposure of storage and transportation vessels of hazardous materials (including pressure liquefied gases) can result in BLEVEs and other high-consequence incidents with large societal and economic impacts. To reduce risk most countries have numerous regulations, codes of practice and guidance notes covering the design, operation and maintenance of vessels and thermal protection systems. Yet despite such regulations there remains no internationally accepted fire test procedure for pressure vessel and accompanying thermal protection systems that is capable of meeting a range of regulatory requirements. This paper considers some of the regulations in place in the western world and considers the origin of these based on large and medium-scale testing conducted to date. It examines conditions found in these tests to propose a set of recommendations on which to base a standard method of test. These recommendations are proposed as being representative of a credible large pool fire scenario that may occur. The safe transportation of cargo in pressure vessels therefore requires knowledge of what will happen to the cargo in the event of a vehicle derailment or rollover resulting in fire exposure. The chapter presents an overview of selected testing and modelling work undertaken to understand the thermohydraulic processes within a vessel that drive pressurization during fire. A series of experiments highlighting the importance of adequate design and selection of protection systems are summarized. It is concluded that pressure relief alone is typically insufficient to prevent vessel rupture, but the combination of relief and thermal coatings can be effective. T1 - Conceptual design of an active centre plate N2 - The efficiency and safety of railway transportation depend both on numerous factors linked to the vehicle, the infrastructure, the operator and the environment. Curved tracks are subjected to demanding situations due to elevated stress levels, as a function of the operating conditions and vehicle/infrastructure design. In such segments, steering forces are superimposed to lateral load transfers. The steering forces depend on the condition and the design of the centre plate and bogies’ suspensions design. While the friction at the centre plate provides the needed damping to mitigate the hunting vibration of the bogie in straight track segments, such yaw resistance originates high steering forces and rail damage on curved tracks. A centre plate with low friction at turns and high friction at straight track segments would thus be highly advantageous. In this paper, a centre plate design is proposed which provides a yaw-rotation resistance torque that depends on the bogie-car relative position. Two different designs are considered for that purpose, one that combines a spring-acted centring mechanism with a lower pair kinematics, while the other one involves higher kinematic pairs which should incorporate lateral damping elements. As a result of using an engineering design approach, the higher kinematic pairs-based design is recommended however, the validation of such operational principles, including the introduction of the needed damping, should be configured on the basis of experimental models. Aiming at reducing these effects several experimental approaches have been applied, involving different tank shapes and the use of baffles, tested under laboratory or field conditions, at full scale or at a down-scale. However, the scope of such approaches has been limited, mainly because the potential effect of other components of the vehicle on the road tanker behavior, has been neglected. T1 - Liquid cargo effect on load transfer under orthogonal accelerations N2 - A methodology is proposed for the experimental analysis of the liquid cargo effect under combined orthogonal accelerations. To simultaneously subject the vehicle-cargo system to longitudinal and lateral accelerations, the vehicle is set obliquely on a tilt table. The experimental outputs suggest that there is a significant effect of the liquid cargo on the lateral load transfer ratio (LTR), on the order of 20%, which is attributable to the resulting shifting of the liquid cargo’s centre of gravity. That is, the peak LTR values due exclusively to sloshing were not significant, in such a way that the liquid cargo would only pose a safety risk under a steady acceleration input. Also, the inverse of the product of the magnitude of the acceleration times the free surface length, correlates with the liquid cargo effect. That is, the magnitude of the input acceleration is not fully determinant for greater load transfers. An effective way to achieve this is to replace Portland cement clinker with more environmentally friendly supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) to produce blended cements. A variety of different SCMs are used today, from fly ash to more exotic options such as rice husk ash or waste glass powder. Depending on its material properties, concrete exposed to fire may experience spalling caused by thermomechanical and thermohydraulic mechanisms. Severe spalling leads to a reduction in the cross-section and exposure of the reinforcement, jeopardizing the load-bearing capacity of the concrete element. The use of blended cements changes the concrete properties which can affect spalling behavior at high temperatures. The link between high temperature and spalling behavior of concrete with blended cements has been investigated in several studies. A review of the existing literature led to the conclusion that the cement type influences the spalling behavior of concrete. However, the relationship does not appear to be clear, as there are contradictions and inconsistencies between the evaluated results. Therefore, further in-depth studies will help to gain a more precise understanding of the effects of blended cements on the spalling behavior of concrete at elevated temperatures. The experimental setup consist ed of a tilt table that slowl y exer ted an increasing lateral acceleration on a two axle bog ie type vehicle equipped with a spring supported container. The potential damaging effect derived from the resulting lateral load transfer, was assessed on the basis of the fourth power law. Results suggest that the cargo having a higher center of gravity could be more damagi ng to the outside rail when compared with the effect of the shorter center of gravity of the cargo, in a range from 0.94% to 3.17%, as a function of the spring constant of the suspension. Consequently and comparatively there would be a long term damaging effect on the rail when having a cargo with a high er center of gravity, so that specific cargo, having a high center of would be more aggressive to the infrastructure On the other hand for the range of time rate changes of the lateral acceleration, it was not found a consisten t trend regarding the effect of the value of the spring constant on the magnitude of the load transfers . T1 - Char to the Rescue: Processing and Transfer of Flame-Retardant Epoxy Resins, Adjusting the Fire Behavior and Post-Fire Structural Integrity of Glass Fiber Composites N2 - Epoxy (EP) glass fiber reinforced composites (GFRCs) are extensively used in structural applications due to their excellent thermal and mechanical properties, but their inherent flammability limits fire-safe deployment. While numerous studies examine the flame retardancy of resins or individual composite systems, comprehensive studies evaluating simultaneous improvements in flame retardancy and post-fire mechanical integrity, specifically through prepreg processing, remain challenging. This study investigates the effectiveness and transferability of phosphorus-based flame retardant (FR) systems to diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and EP novolac resin matrices and their corresponding bidirectional glass fiber composites via prepregs. The FRs are chosen based on varying modes of action: ammonium polyphosphate with inorganic silicate (APP/InSi) primarily acts in the condensed phase (CP), and aluminum diethyl phosphinate with zinc hydroxystannate (AldietPO2/ZHS) is known to demonstrate both gas-phase (GP) and CP activity. Fire residues are tailored to compensate for structural defects from fire exposure. EP novolac, with higher aromaticity and cross-linking, possesses better inherent flame resistance compared to DGEBA. The novolac composites containing AldietPO2/ZHS simultaneously showed the highest retention of flexural properties after fire exposure and the best fire safety index. Optimizing multicomponent flame-retardant formulations is challenging due to the vast experimental space. This study applies Bayesian Optimization (BO) to optimize flame-retardant formulations in high glass transition temperature (Tg) epoxy resins. Aluminum diethyl phosphinate (AlPi) was systematically combined with three synergists: zinc stannate (ZnSt), a silicone-based additive (DowSil), and low-melting glass frits (Ceepree). BO-guided experimental design expanded from 16 initial formulations to a total of 28, minimizing the Maximum Average Rate of Heat Emission (MARHE) under the constraint of Total Smoke Production (TSP) < 17 m2 using the epsilon-constraint method. BO revealed non-linear synergistic interactions: ZnSt significantly reduced smoke production while AlPi effectively lowered heat release. The optimized formulation (BO7) achieved the lowest MARHE (122 kW/m2) while maintaining acceptable smoke levels, establishing a new Pareto front. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of BO in accelerating the development of synergistic, halogen-free flame-retardant polymer systems, offering a scalable and sustainable approach to polymer formulation design. In particular, five FFE tests on columns belonging to a steel braced frame were performed at the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM, Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing) by means of hybrid fire testing technique. In particular, an internal steel column of the ground floor belonging to a three-bay, four-storey concentrically braced steel building was tested, whilst the effect of the remainder of the structure was numerically simulated by means of an equivalent axial stiffness. Since the structure has a low degree of redundancy, the loss of a column can trigger global structural collapse. Two FFE tests were performed without any fire protection system and the other FFE tests were performed with three different fire protection solutions, i.e. conventional and seismic-resistant calcium silicate boards as well as vermiculite spray-based protection. Each column was firstly subjected to horizontal and vertical displacements resulting from seismic nonlinear time-history analysis performed on the numerical model of the case study. Then, the furnace was switched on and the ISO 834 standard fire curve was applied to the specimen. Numerical models were developed and calibrated on experimental data using different types of finite elements. The calibrated models with the presence of axial and rotational springs accurately captured the transition from pre- to post-buckling behavior. These findings highlight the importance of accurate modelling of the boundary conditions. Despite the fact, that seismic intensity was at life safety limit state, it was also found that the seismic damage of the fire protections was not high enough to hinder the fire performance of the fire protections. Our experimental evaluations focused on the thermal properties, flammability, and fire behavior of each system. ATH emerged as the most effective, reducing the effective heat of combustion from 29.3 MJ kg⁻¹ to 18.6 MJ kg⁻¹ and the total heat evolved from 95 to 55 MJ m⁻². It also resulted in an increase in the limiting oxygen index from 17.1 to 26 vol.-% O2, along with a UL 94 HB40 rating. The intumescent system also exhibited considerable flame retardancy, highlighting the similarity of PLimC’s fire behavior to that of PO rather than PC KW - Poly(limonene carbonate) KW - Flame retardancy KW - Sustainability KW - Intumescent systems KW - Metal hydroxides KW - Sulfonate salts KW - Phosphorus flame retardants PY - 2025 UR - https://nbn-resolving.org/urn:nbn:de:kobv:b43-643257 DO - https://doi.org/10.1016/j.polymdegradstab.2025.111711 SN - 1873-2321 SN - 0141-3910 VL - 242 SP - 1 EP - 18 PB - Elsevier Ltd. To achieve a lightweight floor element, concrete with a high compressive strength is combined with high tensile strength carbon textile reinforcement. The corrosion resistant carbon textile reinforcement consists of carbon fibres embedded in a polymer matrix. The use of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) allows a reduction of the required concrete cover and enables the design of thin-walled and highly efficient cross-sections in a variety of shapes. However, the use of concrete with a high compressive strength increases the risk of explosive spalling of concrete under fire exposure. Experimental studies conducted at BAM have shown that the carbon textile reinforcement creates a discontinuity in the concrete resulting in a delamination of the concrete cover. Concrete spalling also depends on the type of CFRP-reinforcement. The comparison of the specimens with different CFRP-reinforcement shows an earlier event of spalling in the case of epoxy-based CFRP. In the 8th International RILEM Workshop on Concrete Behaviour due to Fire Exposure, fire tests on CFRP-reinforced concrete elements without and with various protection measures to prevent spalling will be presented and discussed. The protection measures include the application of an intumescent coating to the fire exposed surface as well as the use of a modified concrete mixture containing polypropylene fibres (PP-fibres). The concrete mixtures used have a maximum grain size of 2 mm and correspond to concrete grade C50/60. The specimens include variants with and without carbon textile reinforcement. Two types of textile reinforcements are investigated, i.e., acrylate-based and epoxy-based resin. The specimens have circular and square forms. The lateral surfaces of the circular specimens are enclosed by a steel ring to restrain the thermal expansion of the concrete during the fire test. In contrast, at the square specimens a free thermal expansion is allowed. The fire tests are carried out with a fire exposure in accordance to the ISO-834 fire curve and without mechanical load. During the fire test, thermocouples are used to measure the temperature within the specimen and on the unexposed surface. The fire test results show that the intumescent coating effectively prevents the concrete spalling in both unreinforced specimens and those with acrylate-based CFRP-reinforcement. However, the intumescent coating was not able to prevent the concrete spalling at the specimens with epoxy-based CFRP-reinforcement, despite the time of the spalling was delayed compared to uncoated specimens. The specimens containing PP-fibres show no spalling, which applies to both types of carbon textile reinforcement used as well as the unreinforced variant. T1 - Post-fire recovery of temperate and mediterranean ecosystems: An interplay between fire severity, soil nutrients, and vegetation from early-stage to decadal-scale dynamics N2 - Wildfires strongly alter soil properties, which in turn affect ecosystem recovery over extended periods, though long-term impacts are less certain. This study investigated a 14-year post-fire chronosequence in Chile’s mediterranean and temperate humid forests, revealing ecosystem-specific soil properties and nutrient recovery mechanisms. By analysing sites at successional stages, the chronosequence approach assessed temporal changes and ecosystem recovery, revealing long-term wildfire effects on soil dynamics and nutrients recovery. Wildfires raised soil bulk density to 0.9 g cm−3 in humid temperate and 1.2 g cm−3 in mediterranean ecosystems. Mediterranean soils experienced greater compaction from organic matter loss, soil aggregate destruction, ash-clogged pores, and topsoil erosion. Soil texture shifts were ecosystem-dependent: mediterranean soils increased 10–12 % in clay and silt through ash redistribution and aggregation, while temperate soils saw sand content rise by 0.74 % and 0.32 % yearly at 0–5 and 5–10 cm depths from thermal disaggregation and erosion. Ground vegetation recovers quickly, but physical soil properties like bulk density require over 14 years to return to pre-fire conditions. In humid temperate forests, ash input initially increased soil pH (4.8 to 5.8), reducing acidity, mitigating aluminium toxicity, while increasing nutrient availability. Base cation stocks increased in mediterranean woodlands (e.g., Ca: up to 0.41 Mg ha−1 y−1) due to ash retention, lower leaching, and ash infiltration into subsoil. Nutrient stocks in humid forests recovered slowly (Ca: 0.087–0.13 Mg ha−1 y−1) due to rainfall-driven leaching and low subsoil reserves. Carbon and N losses were restricted to the litter horizon in temperate forests, recovering via fire-resistant tree inputs, whereas mediterranean soils suffered severe C and N depletion from vegetation loss, erosion, and low N fixation. Fire effects and recovery are ecosystem-specific, shaped by landscape, geology, hydrology, and vegetation resilience. Understanding how fire regimes affect soil and nutrient recovery is vital for improving projections in fire-prone regions. The mechanical stress test was carried out in a special apparatus. Both mechanical and non-mechanical stress tests were conducted on specimens at 20, 40, and 70 °C for 28 days to document changes in mass, volume, and tensile properties. Both increasing temperature and mechanical stress have a significant effect on the tensile strength of the FKM polymer when exposed to B10. The combination of increasing temperature and mechanical stress induced rupture within 2 h. It was also established that FKM polymer with pre-exposure in B10 survived longer during mechanical stress compared to specimens exposed only to air. With the support of infrared (IR) spectroscopy, we were able to confirm the penetration of B10 into the FKM polymer. T1 - Flame retardant polylimonene carbonate: Material innovation as a game changer N2 - This research seeks to understand and identify the most promising approaches to enhance the flame resistance of poly(limonene carbonate) (PLimC). Furthermore, the goal is to develop a PLimC-based material that incorporates halogen-free flame retardants (FRs) that are not only highly effective but also environmentally sustainable, contributing to the advancement of greener materials for safer use. The plastic industry depends on fossil-based materials, causing environmental concerns. PLimC, a sustainable polymer derived from limonene and CO₂, offers a promising alternative. Its use in fire-safe applications underscores the need to optimize its performance. This study evaluates halogen-free FRs to identify and understand the most promising approaches to enhance PLimC’s flame resistance, aiming to improve fire safety and support eco-friendly material development. This study has as its main task to conduct experimental evaluations to analyze the thermal properties, flammability, and fire behavior of each system. Pyrolysis, together with the evolved gases of the samples, were analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis coupled with a FTIR spectrometer. The energy content was determined by using a bomb calorimeter. The flammability of the samples was assessed by the reaction to small flame tests such as the UL 94 burning chamber and limiting oxygen index (LOI). The burning behavior in forced flamed conditions was evaluated using the cone calorimeter. Thermal properties were first evaluated to gain a deeper understanding of the pure PLimC thermal stability and fire behavior. This analysis builds on PLimC's structural similarity to polycarbonate (PC), due to its carbonate group, and to polyolefins (PO), due to its aliphatic limonene-derived segment, providing insights into optimizing PLimC for sustainable, fire-safe applications. The initial results, which defined our starting point, showed that the LOI of PLimC was 17.2%, very close to that of PO such as polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) (~18%). In contrast, PC has a higher LOI of ~24%. Additionally, PLimC did not produce any char (0 wt.-%), similar to PO, whereas PC forms char due to its phenolic structures. The effective heat of combustion of PLimC, measured using bomb calorimetry, was determined to be 31.1 MJ/kg. This value is comparable to that of PC (~30 MJ/kg) but significantly lower than PO (~44 MJ/kg). These findings, which demonstrated similarities to both PO and PC, prompted the evaluation of various commercially available FRs at standard market concentrations. Four halogen-free FR systems were chosen for evaluation: 1. mixture of APP (20 wt.-%) + pentaerythritol (10 wt.-%) as an intumescent system [PLimC / APP / Penta], 2. mixture of the phosphorus compound PX200® (16 wt.-%) + PTFE (0.4 wt.-%) as antidripping [PLimC / PhosC / PTFE], 3. aluminum trihydroxide ATH (50 wt.-%) [PLimC / ATH], and the potassium sulfonate salt Bayowet® (0.4 wt.-%) [PLimC / SulfS]. The concentrations were decided according to the standards used in the industry. Cone calorimeter results show that PLimC has the usual behavior of a non-charring specimen (fast burning and high peak of heat release). ATH proved to be the most effective flame retardant, achieving the biggest reductions in the effective heat of combustion (EHC) and total heat evolved (THE). Additionally, ATH achieved the highest increase in the LOI (17.1% to 26.0%). With these results, we understood that the FRs commonly used with polyolefins (at concentrations standard in the industry) exhibit similar behavior in terms of flammability and flame retardancy when applied to PLimC. Additionally, we aim to investigate bio-based flame retardants to further improve the sustainability of the material. Given that phytic acid salts and lignin have demonstrated effective flame-retardant performance in polyolefins, we consider these compounds promising candidates for application in our system. However, the integrity of such tanks can be jeopardized by fire. In such a scenario, MLI materials degradation can occur, leaving the tank unprotected from the fire heat flux, with consequent rapid pressurization and a high risk of failure. This study presents a safety assessment of non-combustible MLI under fire exposure based on the estimation of the time to mechanical failure of the equipment. This is calculated through an innovative model that simulates the thermomechanical response of the tank, including the MLI thermal degradation and the pressure-relief valve (PRV) operation. The aim of the experimental investigations carried out in this work is to create the basis for such an analysis by investigating the spreading behavior of the gases after they have been released in the tunnel and determining the influence of individual geometric and operational parameters on this behavior. Specifically, this work is based on the scenario of a continuous, momentum-free release of propane within a vaulted road tunnel with active longitudinal ventilation. The basis of the subsequent experimental part is formed by two test rigs built as part of the work, which are similar in their essential features, but differ in scale. In both facilities, the aforementioned release scenario was simulated under various boundary conditions based on an idealized tunnel segment. The dispersion behavior is primarily assessed by the averaged concentration distribution near the ground, which results from a large number of detectors arranged in the experimental area. The detectors operate on the principle of weakening infrared light in the presence of hydrocarbons. Measurements of the flow field properties accompany the concentration measurements. The conception of the test rig on a scale of 1:12 is based on dimensional analysis. The actual release campaign comprises a large number of individual experiments in which selected parameters were varied over the tunnel-relevant range. The predicted heavy gas behavior for propane emerged clearly in the experiments. In cases in which the cloud laterally reaches the tunnel walls, the gases are channeled, which is accompanied by reduced longitudinal dilution. It was possible to identify the release rate and the flow velocity as the factors that have the greatest influence. The former basically increased the concentration, while the latter decreased it. All other tested parameters resulted in more complex propagation situations, which force a differentiated consideration of the influence. Lifting the source from the ground also reduced the concentration. In the case of an eccentrically arranged source and a transverse slope of the roadway, the influence is largely limited to the lateral concentration distribution in the immediate vicinity of the source. Nevertheless, both parameters plus a possible longitudinal slope of the roadway only showed a slight effect on the area far-downstream from the source. In addition, the phenomenon of backlayering, which is known from the spreading of fire smoke in the tunnel, could be demonstrated with a steep longitudinal slope. Obstacles increased the complexity of the situation. While globally the dilution of the cloud is partly invariant to obstacles, locally an increase as well as a decrease in concentration can be observed under certain conditions. For the unobstructed tunnel, it was finally possible to define a dimensionless parameter that describes the curve of the longitudinal dilution on the ground within the heavy gas cloud. From this, a simple graphical nomogram is derived for the continuous release of heavy gases in an unobstructed tunnel environment, which can be used to estimate the concentration in relation of a dimensionless source distance. For exploring the real, undistorted behavior experiments were also carried out in original scale. Due to the similarity of both test rigs in terms of scale, the test results can also be used to check the scalability of the spreading situations. For that, two configurations that have already been examined in small scale were selected. The main limitation for test execution and regarding the scalability comparison was the dependence of the flow conditions within the test rig from external wind conditions which occurred despite of taken countermeasures. The large-scale release was associated with pronounced fog formation. The near-ground spreading corresponding to the heavy gas behavior could be confirmed. However, in detail the spread was far more unsteady. Looking at the time-averaged concentrations, the processes already known from the small-scale test were qualitatively well approximated. Remaining quantitative differences, however, require critical consideration. This discrepancy is more likely a consequence of the experimental compromises have to be made in the specific case. From the observed gas behavior, the development of a surface fire initiated by ignition of the re-leased gases is considered to be the most likely subsequent scenario for the release of heavy, flam-mable gases in tunnel-like enclosures. The thesis concludes with recommendations on the methodological approach to be favored in the future. Consumption of hydrogen as a fuel meets several restrictions such as its low volumetric energy density in gas phase. To tackle this problem, storage as well as transportation in liquid phase is recommended. To be able to handle this component in liquid phase, an efficient thermal insulation e.g., MLI insulation is required. Some studies have been revealed vulnerability of this type of insulation against high heat flux, for instance a fire accident. Some investigations have been depicted the importance of consideration of the MLI thermal degradation in terms of its reflective layer. However, limited number of studies have been focused on the thermal degradation of spacer material and its effect on the overall heat flux. In this study, through systematic experimental measurements, the effect of thermal loads on glass fleece, glass paper as well as polyester spacers are investigated. The results are reported in various temperature and heat flux profiles. Interpreting the temperature profiles revealed as the number of spacers in the medium increases, the peak temperature detectable by the temperature sensor on the measurement plate decreases. Moreover, the contribution of each individual spacer in all cases regarding the experimental temperature range is assessed to be around 8%. This value may increase to around 50% for glass paper and polyester spacers, and to around 25% for glass fleece spacers as the number of spacer layers increases up to six layers. To utilize the outcomes of the experiment later and integrate the results into numerical and CFD simulations, a model is proposed for the mentioned experimental temperature range up to 300°C to predict a heat flux attenuation factor. The model proposes a fitting factor that can reproduce the least square fitted line to the experimental data. Does this also entail new risks? The storage of cryogenic fuels requires tanks with Thermal Super Insulations (TSI) to keep the fluid cold and limit the formation of boil-off gas. TSI has proven itself in some applications since the middle of the 20th century, but in the land transport sector they are still quite new, where accidents involving fires, collisions, and their combination are to be expected. This work focuses on investigating the behavior of different types of TSI while exposed to a heat source representing a fire. To this aim, a High-Temperature Thermal Vacuum Chamber (HTTVC) was applied, which allows the thermal loading of a thermal insulation material in a vacuum and measuring the heat flow transported through the TSI in parallel. The most common example of cryogenic tank applications is the transport of natural gas and hydrogen in their liquid form (LNG and LH2 respectively) for which, considering the same transport volume cryogenic storage ensures significantly higher transport capacities with respect storage based solely on overpressure. A common feature of all cryogenic transported fluids is that their condition must be maintained minimizing heat leaks from the environment as much as possible. This is achieved by the implementation of thermal super Insulations (TSI) systems based on e. g. rock wool, perlites, microspheres, multilayer insulations (MLI), and vacuum which have proven to be effective in applications. However, due to the relatively short period of use in some applications, the small number of documented incidents, and the still few investigations carried out in the field, the exploitation of such systems in the cryogenic fluids transport sector still suffers from insufficient knowledge about the course and consequences of incidents. Accidents involving collisions, fires, and their combination are quite common in the transportation sector and may generate extraordinary loads on the tank and its insulation system, eventually leading to tank failure. The present study focuses on the behavior of TSI systems in tanks when it is exposed to an external heat source representative of a hydrocarbon fire scenario. This may cause an increase of the heat flux into a tank by several orders of magnitude with respect to normal design conditions, thus inducing severe and in the TSI, causing the rapid release of flammable gas and even resulting in a Boiling Liquide Expanding Vapour Explosion (BLEVE). To study such scenarios a test rig was developed at BAM that allows testing of TSI at industrial conditions and enables subsequent analysis of TSI samples. This test rig considers the typical double-walled design of tanks for cryogenic fluids with vacuum and an additional insulating material in the interspace. Adjustable electrical heating elements simulate the fire on one side of the double wall. This process allows the implementation of repeatable heat loads of up to 100 kW/m². The other side of the double wall is represented by a fluid-supported heat exchanger, which allows the simulation of cold or cryogenic conditions in the test rig, and to determine the heat flux transmitted through the double wall. Thus, the test rig allows thermal loading and performance analysis of TSI samples at the same time. In the presentation, the results of diverse tested TSI systems will be presented and discussed. As a result of this study, the list of advantages and disadvantages for the choice of tested TSI expands. Within the test, all samples degraded as a consequence of a hydrocarbon fire-orientated thermal load. Strong differences in the behavior of the tested TSI systems over temperature, location, and time were observed. Additionally, the tested MLI insulations were significantly more resistant to their base materials. These results are relevant for the design, the definition of national and international regulations, the Risk assessment, and the development of safety concepts for cryogenic tanks. This is because they allow significantly higher volumetric energy densities to be achieved than when these energy carriers are stored at typical temperatures on Earth. This is important for numerous energy-intensive applications, such as those found in all transport sectors. Important cryogenic energy carriers include liquefied hydrogen (LH2) and liquefied natural gas (LNG). Key representatives for the application of cryogenic tanks are natural gas in the form of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and hydrogen, e. g. in the form of Liquefied Hydrogen (LH2), for which significantly higher transport capacities can be achieved with the same transport volume using cryogenic storages than with storages based solely on overpressure. What applies to all cryogenic transported fluids in common is their condition that must be maintained. Hence heat flows into the preserved fluid must be minimized. Thermal super Insulations (TSI) based on e. g. multilayer insulations (MLI), perlites, and vacuum are utilized for this purpose and have already proven themselves in similar applications. However, for the use of tanks for cryogenic fluids in the transport sector, there is insufficient knowledge regarding the course and consequences of incidents, which is due to the still short period of use and the few documented incidents, hence few investigations carried out in this field. Typical scenarios in the transport sector represent car accidents with collisions, fires, and their combination, which are associated with extraordinary loads on the tank. The focus of this study is to investigate the behavior of TSI as a result of their thermal exposure to a heat source representing a fire. It is worth mentioning that this could lead to an increase of the heat flux into a tank by several orders of magnitude, and to permanent damage of the TSI, ultimately rapid release of flammable gas as well as a Boiling Liquide Expanding Vapour Explosion (BLEVE). For this purpose, a high temperature thermal vacuum chamber (HTTVC) has been developed that allows thermal loading of MLI or perlites in a vacuum and simultaneous measurement of heat flow through this TSI. The HTTVC is designed to represent realistic insulation conditions and to withstand thermal loads from typical design fires. The HTTVC was applied to investigate TSI based on MLI and vacuum. It is shown that the thermal stress caused permanent damage to the TSI, with shrinkage, phase change, pyrolysis, and condensation being significant damage mechanisms. The results are relevant for the evaluation of accident scenarios and can thus contribute to the improvement of TSI and the development of emergency measures for the protection of persons and infrastructures. T1 - Modelling the response of LH2 tanks equipment with Multi Layer Insulation to fire exposure N2 - Hydrogen is among the most promising candidates to replace fossil fuels in the energy transition. Hydrogen-powered vehicles are already a reality, and their number is foreseen to increase considerably in the next decade. Among the possible solutions to store hydrogen in such vehicles, cryogenic tanks equipped with multi-layer insulation (MLI) appear to be one of the most effective to ensure high volumetric energy density. A potential loss of integrity of this kind of storage equipment might lead to severe consequences due to high flammability of hydrogen. This might occur, for instance, as a consequence of the exposure to an external source of heat such as a fire following a car accident. Real scale fire test results suggest that the super insulating performance of MLI systems may undergo severe degradation when this is subjected to high temperature, leaving the tank almost unprotected and leading to failure in a relatively short time. Characterizing this kind of accident scenario is crucial to ensure a safe design of storage tanks for Hydrogen-powered vehicles. This presentation provides an overview of the ongoing research work on modelling MLI LH2 tanks exposed to fire. Lumped and computational fluid dynamic based models are presented, highlighting current gaps. The relevance of taking MLI degradation into account when simulating the pressure increase due to external fire exposure is here demonstrated through the analysis case studies. In technical applications, the challenge is to keep these energy carriers cold for a long time. This is achieved in the road transport sector and also stationary applications by thermal super insulations (TSI) which based on double-walled tanks with vacuum and multilayer insulation (MLI) in the interspace. This study focuses on the behaviour of widely used combustible MLI in a fire scenario, at vacuum and atmospheric pressure conditions. The former corresponds to the typical design condition and the latter to the condition after an outer hull rapture of a tank. Furthermore, two fire scenarios were taken into account: a standard-oriented approach and a hydrocarbon fire-oriented approach. For the study, a test rig was applied that allows testing of TSI at industrial conditions and subsequent analysis of TSI samples. The test rig allows thermal loading and performance analysis of TSI samples at the same time. Comparing the tests, the samples degraded differently. The EU-funded project TREEADS and the so-called German pilot within the project are concentrating on wildfire in Europe. Extensive experimental research is done on local vegeta-tion in Germany and the experimental results are used to adjust the Fire Dynam-ics Simulator (FDS) to local vegetation as a fuel in the calculations. The particle model and the boundary fuel model are developed for the simulation of forest fires. Both models require the kinetic input for the dehydration, pyrolysis, and char oxidation process. This three-step simplified model describes the basic fuel combustion kinetic. Most published simulations use the default kinetic input of pine needles from FDS user manual. To adjust the simulation to local vegetation, the corresponding kinetic parame-ters have been experimental investigated. Samples of pine needles, moss and other falling leaves were collected, air dried and grinded into powder. The TG analysis of all these samples were done under different heating rate of 5, 10 and 20K/min. The activation energy and the corresponding pre-exponential factor were calcu-lated. The results show that fire spread depends significantly on the vegetation and comparison with small scale experiments show good agreement using the new kinetic parameters. The new model is applied to a larger scenario and will be compared to the results of large-scale experiments for further validation of the model.
