The variations of internal overpressure, external overpressure, flame propagation and flame-overpressure coupling relationship were analyzed. The results showed thatthe internal overpressure histories existed three obvious peaks, and when the obstacle location was set at 0.4 m, the maximum absolute values of overpressure (pmax and pneg), overpressure rise rates ((dp/dt)ave and (dp/dt)max) and the deflagration index (KG) were obtained. Additionally, more than two positive overpressure peaks were observed in the external overpressure histories. The maximum values of external overpressures and overpressure rise rates were obtained at the obstacle location of 0.4 m. For the fuel concentrations of 1.3%,.1.7% and 2.1%, the shortest time to reach pmax appeared at the obstacle location of 0.4 m, 0.2 m and 0.6 m, respectively, while the shortest time to reach (dp/dt)max and the maximum flame propagation speed were obtained for all the fuel concentrations at the obstacle location of 0.2 m. SBB has initiated a series of examinations using different methodologies to gain a deeper understanding of the excitation mechanisms at low frequencies, in addition to that obtained in the RIVAS project. To date it is not yet clear what constitutes a complete measurement data set that would enable understanding most of the vibration excitation mechanisms in turnouts. Increasing vibration at turnouts in comparison to normal track is observed for all measured frequencies. The different methodologies are presented in the paper. Under-sleeper pads (USP) are a cost-effective method to reduce vibration at frequencies above 63 Hz (1/3 octave), but there is probably no improvement for frequencies below 63 Hz. A first test of new frog geometry did not show relevant improvements in Vibration emission in comparison to a reference frog geometry. Axle box acceleration measurements are an interesting method to identify defects in a turnout. A specialized measurement system of rail roughness could identify certain geometry Problem areas for some frogs. Noise increases also are observed at turnouts for frequencies ranging between 80 to 1000 Hz. The use of railway source models to calculate contact forces for ballasted track and turnouts seems promising, in particular for understanding the influence of ground. As-built documentation and quality assurance are often neglected. Civil engineering is among the industries sectors with the lowest level of digitalization and the lowest gain in productivity. However, this is going to change. In the past decade, several drivers have challenged the ways clients, contractors, and authorities currently operate. These drivers include but are not limited to an increasing demand for serialization and automatization, the mandatory introduction of “Building Information Modeling” (BIM) in public procurement, the availability of construction equipment with sensors and digital interfaces or emerging automated construction technologies such as 3D-printing. The resulting poly-(DOPO-HQ/THPPO-terephthalate) (PDTT) is implemented as a flame retardant into an epoxy resin (EP) at a 10 wt% loading. The effects on EP are compared with those of the monomer DOPO-HQ and triphenylphosphine oxide (OPPh3) as low molar mass flame retardants. The glass transition temperature, thermal decomposition, flammability (reaction to small flame), and burning behavior of the thermosets are investigated using differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, pyrolysis combustion flow calorimetry, UL 94-burning chamber testing, and cone calorimeter measurements. Although P-contents are low at only 0.6 wt%, the study aims not at attaining V-0, but at presenting a proof of principle: Epoxy resinswith PDTT show promising fire performance, exhibiting a 25% reduction in total heat evolved (THE), a 30% reduction in peak heat release rate (PHRR) due to flame inhibition (21% reduction in effective heat of combustion (EHC)), and an increase in Tg at the same time. This study indicates that rigid aromatic hyperbranched polymeric structures offer a promising route toward multifunctional flame retardancy. Dabei tragen die Ergebnisse der an der Amsterdamer Brücke 705 durchgeführten Belastungstests wesentlich zum Verständnis des Strukturverhaltens bei. Das Konzept der statischen Belastung basierte auf dem Einsatz von zwei 36-Tonnen-Lastwagen, die an mehreren vorbestimmten Stellen auf der Brücke anhielten. Die auf diese Weise aufgebrachte Last führte zu ortsabhängigen kleinen Durchbiegungseffekten, die als lokale Längsdehnung der an der Unterseite der Brücke integrierten Sensorfaser aufgezeichnet wurden. Die reflektometrischen Messungen beruhten auf dem Prinzip genannt TW-COTDR (Tunable Wavelength Coherent Optical Time Domain Reflectometry). Die Messgenauigkeit lag im Bereich von 0,5 µm/m. The GIOTTO project aims to develop of the real time monitoring in civil engineering by use of the 6 DOFs sensors. This presented work is part of the GIOTTO Project. BAM offered the idea test structure BLEIB bridge for experiment. This prestressed concrete bridge model benefits us to have the various structural condition with different pre-stress. The passive and active monitoring were carried out. The seismic interferometry technique was considered to extract the virtual wave propagation in the structure comparable to the real impulse response excited by the hammer impact. Meanwhile the ultrasonic measurement was performed during the monitoring. The coda wave interferometry (CWI) was applied to investigate the wave velocity variation in two kinds of scale recordings at different prestressed states. The experimental result approves that the seismological noise- based methods are the appropriate evaluation tool for the measurement data. T1 - Experimental investigation on the performance of the standardized testing method for detonation fl ame arresters N2 - Detonation flame arresters are typically used as protection systems in industrial applications to prevent flame transmission from one section of a plant to another after an incidental ignition. Numerous processes in the chemical and petrochemical industry are taking place under non-atmospheric conditions (e.g., increased pressure and/or temperature) in order to optimize the production capabilities. To verify and examine the suitability of detonation flame arresters, a test method originating from the DIN EN ISO 16852 standard, which is mainly based on findings from experiments under atmospheric conditions, is used. In order to improve the reproducibility of detonation tests at high pressures, especially regarding the deflagration to detonation transition, test methods will be analyzed and improved. The main objective of this study is to develop an improved test method for detonation flame arresters, which offers a higher reproducibility and moreover, an applicability under non-atmospheric conditions. Therefore, an interlaboratory comparison on the performance of in-line flame arresters for stable and unstable detonations is jointly conducted by the project partners (PTB, BAM, Braunschweiger Flammenfilter GmbH and IBExU GmbH). The experiments are performed according to the test method regulated in the DIN EN ISO 16852 standard for different pressures before ignition and different explosion groups. Potential ambiguities of the standardized test method that might lead to the differing results at the different institutes are identified from the interlaboratory comparison. Based on these results, an improved test method for detonation flame arresters will be developed, which will ensure a greater safety at process plants while handling combustibles. Dabei wurden sowohl kommerziell verfügbare Klebebänder mit unterschiedlichem Brandverhalten als auch Modellhaftklebebänder mit neuartigen Flammschutzmitteln eingesetzt. Zunächst wurde das Brandverhalten der Klebebänder adressiert und anschließend der Einfluss jenes Brandverhaltens auf Brandeigenschaften von entsprechend geklebten Verbunden analysiert. Im Bezug auf die Entflammbarkeit besitzt das Klebeband im Inneren eines Klebverbundes nur einen geringen Einfluss auf das Brandverhalten und die Eigenschaften des Substrates dominieren. Im sich entwickelnden Brand, hier simuliert durch das Cone Calorimeter, sind deutliche Unterschiede zwischen massivem und geklebten Bauteil zu erkennen. Dabei wirkt die Klebfuge je nach Substrat und Klebebandbeschaffenheit unterschiedlich. Weitere Untersuchungen zu flammgeschützten Haftklebstoffen sollen erfolgen und somit neue Wege in der Haftklebstoffentwicklung aufzeigen. T2 - 21. A1 - Schartel, Bernhard T1 - Flame retardant flexible polyurethane foams based on phosphorous soybean-oil polyol and expandable graphite N2 - A phosphorous soybean-oil–based polyol was derived via epoxidation and ring opening reaction as an alternative to petrochemical-based polyol for the synthesis of flexible polyurethane foams (FPUFs). 5-wt.% and 10-wt.% of expandable graphite (EG) were added to further improve flame retardancy. The mechanical properties (tensile strength and compression stress) of the foams were investigated. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) coupled with Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) were conducted to evaluate the pyrolysis; limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL 94 and cone calorimeter were performed to analyze the fire performance of the foams; smoke density chamber was used to investigate the smoke released during burning. When 10-wt.% of EG was used, the flame retardancy of the foams was much enhanced due to the synergistic effect between phosphorus and EG. The char yield was three times higher (54wt.%). The fire load MARHE approached 100 kWm−2, half of the value expected for a superposition. The combination of phosphorous polyols and EG is proposed as strategy for future flame retarded FPUFs. In the general case, both the capacity of and the loads on the structure vary with time. This analysis can be approached by approximation through a series of time-invariant reliability problems, which is a potentially effective strategy for cases where direct solutions of the time-variant reliability problem are challenging, e.g. for structural systems with many elements or arbitrary load processes. In this contribution, we thoroughly Review the formulation of the equivalent time-invariant reliability problems and extend this approximation to structures for which inspection and monitoring data is available. Thereafter, we present methods for efficiently evaluating the reliability over time. In particular, we propose the combination of sampling-based methods with a FORM (first-order reliability method) approximation of the series system reliability problem that arises in the computation of the lifetime reliability. Dazu gehört eine Zündgefahrenbewertung, bei der auch nichtelektrische Zündquellen betrachtet werden müssen, zu denen die mechanischen Schlagvorgänge gehören. Bei dieser Zündquellenart kommt es infolge eines Schlages und/oder Reibens eines Bauteils auf ein anderes zu einer Energieumwandlung. Dadurch kommt es zu einer Temperaturerhöhung an der Kontaktstelle sowie unter Umständen zu einem Abtrennvorgang kleiner Partikel erhöhter Temperatur. Sowohl die heißen Reibflächen als auch die abgetrennten Partikel stellen potentielle Zündquellen explosionsfähiger Atmosphären dar. Edelstahl ist für Geräte für die Verwendung zum bestimmungsgemäßen Gebrauch im explosionsgefährdeten Bereich insbesondere in der Chemie ein wichtiger Konstruktionswerkstoff. Die Ergebnisse des Forschungsprojektes "Entwicklung normativer Anforderungen an explosionsgeschützte nichtelektrische Geräte resultierend aus der Zündfähigkeit mechanisch erzeugter Schlagfunken (NAMES)" zeigen, dass Schlagvorgänge mit Edelstählen eine erhebliche Zündgefahr von explosionsfähigen Brenngasgemischen darstellen können. Dabei bestehen jedoch mitunter deutliche Unterschiede zwischen den verschiedenen Brenngasgemischen. Besonders hohe Zündwahrscheinlichkeiten konnten bei Brenngasgemischen mit Brenngasen der IEC-Explosionsgruppe IIC beobachtet werden, die Acetylen bzw. Wasserstoff als Brenngas enthielten. Schläge im Wasserstoff/Luft-Gemisch waren dabei jedoch bedeutend zündwirksamer. In diesem Gasgemisch konnte bei niedrigen maximalen Schlagenergien bis 60 J sogar eine mitunter höhere relative Zündhäufigkeit beobachtet werden als bei Versuchen mit unlegiertem Baustahl. Auch am Beispiel von Ex-Ventilatoren wurden viele Unfälle mit zum Teil erheblichen Zerstörungen an den strömungstechnischen Anlagen in einer Publikation von H.Witt, Witt&Sohn IGW Ventilatoren aufgezeichnet, deren nachgewiesene oder vermutete Ursache mechanische Zündquellen mit etwa ähnlich hohem Anteil wie bei den Stäuben waren. Für Werkzeuge wird üblicherweise hochlegierter Edelstahl, im Ex-Bereich wird sogenanntes „funkenarmes Werkzeug aus schwer oxidierbaren NE-Metallen verwendet. Bisherige Forschungsarbeiten haben gezeigt, dass von Schlagvorgängen zwischen Bauteilen aus unlegiertem Baustahl eine erhebliche Zündgefahr von explosionsfähigen Gasgemischen ausgehen kann (Grunewald et al., 2010). Dabei ging diese Gefahr insbesondere von oxidierten Partikeln aus, die während des Schlagvorgangs abgetrennt wurden. In industriellen Anwendungen wird jedoch häufig Edelstahl statt unlegiertem Baustahl verwendet. Die geringere Oxidationsfähigkeit des Edelstahls könnte möglicherweise zu einer geringeren Zündfähigkeit von Schlagvorgängen mit Edelstahl im Vergleich zu Schlagvorgängen mit unlegiertem Baustahl führen Die Ergebnisse des Forschungsprojektes „NAMES 2104“ zeigen, dass Schlagvorgänge mit Edelstählen bei bestimmten Parameterkombinationen eine erhebliche Zündgefahr von explosionsfähigen Brenngasgemischen darstellen können. Dabei bestehen jedoch mitunter deutliche Unterschiede zwischen den verschiedenen Brenngasgemischen. Besonders hohe Zündwahrscheinlichkeiten konnten bei Brenngasgemischen mit Brenngasen der IEC-Explosionsgruppe IIC beobachtet werden, die Acetylen bzw. Wasserstoff als Brenngas enthielten. Schläge im Wasserstoff/Luft-Gemisch waren dabei jedoch bedeutend zündwirksamer. Prüfungen mit NE-Metallen für funkenarme Werkzeuge haben gezeigt, dass bei Schlagvorgängen gegen Baustahl oder Beton- bzw. Estrichbetonböden je nach Parameterkombination bereits bei wenig energiereichen Schlagvorgängen Funken und Explosionen erzeugen. Ausgangspunkt für weitere, aktuelle Untersuchungen zum Einfluss von unbeschichteten Betonoberflächen waren bei den Prüfungen gemachte Beobachtungen, dass von den Herstellern funkenarmer Werkzeuge als Schlagpartner „typischer Industrieanlagen-Betonboden“ unterschiedliche Beton- bzw. Estrichbeton-Qualitäten angegeben wurden. Um die Schlagfunkenversuche von NE-Metallen gegen Estrich-Beton auf eine reproduzierbare Basis zu stellen, hat die BAM in ihrem zertifizierten Beton-Labor den wichtigsten, genau zugebbare Beton-Bestandteile „Zement“ untersucht mit dem Ziel herauszufinden, welche Menge Zement noch die Definition eines Betons erfüllt und ob der Zementanteil Auswirkungen auf die Zündwahrscheinlichkeit bei mechanisch erzeugten Schlagfunken hat. The heat release rate (HRR) is the most important fire parameter to analyze the fire hazards of burning objects, so that an accurate determination of it is crucial. In this paper, two different measurement techniques, the Oxygen Consumption Calorimetry (OCC) and the Sensible Enthalpy Rise Approach (SERA) are simultaneously performed in the same calorimeter to measure the HRR of two different types of lithium-ion batteries. HRR values as well as total energies determined by SERA are higher than measured with OCC: The total energy released is about 10–12 times (SERA) and 6–9.5 times (OCC) the electrical stored energy for both battery types, whereas the timescales of the release differ strongly between the types, resulting in maximum HRRs of 3.4 MW (SERA) and 1.5 MW (OCC) for one module of type A and 0.8 MW (SERA) and 0.6 (OCC) of type B respectively. Furthermore, a sensitive dependency of the HRR measurement with SERA on the position of the wall temperature measurement is observed. For that purpose, we equipped a palm-size aerial robot, based on the Crazyflie 2.0 quadrocopter, with a small lightweight metal oxide gas sensor for measuring evaporated ethanol from chemical trails. To detect and localize the chemical trail, a novel detection criterion was developed that uses only relative changes in the transient phase of the sensor response, making it more robust in its application. We tested our setup in first crossing-trail experiments showing that our flying ant robot is able to correlate an odor hit with the chemical trail within 0.14 m. Principally, this could enable aerial chemical trail following in the future. For that purpose, we equipped a palm-size aerial robot, based on the Crazyflie 2.0 quadrocopter, with a small lightweight metal oxide gas sensor for measuring evaporated ethanol from chemical trails. To detect and localize the chemical trail, a novel detection criterion was developed that uses only relative changes in the transient phase of the sensor response, making it more robust in its application. We tested our setup in first crossing-trail experiments showing that our flying ant robot is able to correlate an odor hit with the chemical trail within 0.14 m. The flame retardancy of FPUFs were evaluated by limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning and cone calorimetry tests, and the results indicated the structure-flame retardancy relationship of EDPs. Among these EDPs, P-(diethoxymethyl)-N-phenylphosphonamidate (EDPPA) exhibited the best flame retardant effect, methyl 3-((diethoxymethyl)(ethoxy)phosphoryl)propanoate (EDPMA) the second, and ethyl phenyl (di-ethoxymethyl)phosphonate (EDPPO) the worst. When the incorporation of EDPPA was 10 wt%, the FPUFs could self-extinguish and pass the vertical burning test. Meanwhile, the LOI value of FPUF-PA increased to 23.6% with 20 wt% loading of flame retardant. According to the investigation of volatiles during the thermal degradation of FPUFs and the morphologies of char residues after cone test, we inferred the pos- sible flame retardant mechanism. The results indicated that EDPs could release phosphorus-containing compounds in the gas phase, which would generate phosphorus-containing radicals and play the role of radical scavenger. In the condensed phase, EDPs can promote the formation of dense, intact and thermal stably char layer on the surface of FPUFs. Moreover, we found that the structure influence on flame retardancy was attributed to the atoms linked to the central phosphorus. Our results indicate that these EDPs are promising flame retardants in FPUFs that can be applied to improve the flame retardancy of FPUFs in various practical applications. T1 - Improving bio-oil chemical profile of seaweeds through anaerobic fermentation pre-treatment N2 - Biomass pre-treatments for bio-oil quality improvement are mainly based on thermal and chemical methods which are costly and hence reduce the sustainability of pyrolysis-based refineries. In this paper, anaerobic digestion (AD) and dark fermentation (DF) are proposed as alternative ‘green’ pre-treatments to improve this situation. For this purpose, three seaweeds namely Sargassum polycystum, (Phaephyta), Gracilaria tenuistipitata, (Rhodophyta) and Ulva reticulata, (Chlorophyta) with high ash and oxygen contents were pre-treated to improve their composition and structure prior to pyrolysis. The results reveal that both biological pre-treatments affected, positively, the composition and structure of the seaweed biomass with AD pre-treatment reducing N and S contents by 86% and 63%, respectively. DF was more efficient in terms of ash and moisture reduction with 25% and 70%, respectively. In addition, oxygen (O) reduction by 27% was observed after DF which was evidenced by FTIR spectroscopy indicating the reduction of most oxygen-containing functional groups in the biomass. On the other hand, the carbon (C) content increased in DF pre-treated seaweeds up to 42%, almost two times higher relative content than C in the raw seaweed. The changes in the composition of pre-treated seaweeds resulted in changes in their thermal degradation and the volatile profiles produced during pyrolysis. Interestingly, anhydrosugars and furans which account for some 70% (by area) in raw seaweeds markedly declined or become undetectable after DF pre-treatment and correspondingly more acetic acid and hydrocarbons were produced while after AD more aromatics with high toluene content (ca.17%) were generated. The results indicate that biooil with profiles more similar to petroleum-based composition i.e. rich in hydrocarbons and low in anhydrosugars, N and S can be generated by AD and DF pre-treatments and opens up the possibility of these approaches to effect cost reduction in the overall generation of bio-based fuels. Dazu gehört eine Zündgefahrenbewertung, bei der auch nichtelektrische Zündquellen betrachtet werden müssen, zu denen die mechanischen Schlagvorgänge gehören. Bei dieser Zündquellenart kommt es infolge eines Schlages und/oder Reibens eines Bauteils auf ein anderes zu einer Energieumwandlung. Dadurch kommt es zu einer Temperaturerhöhung an der Kontaktstelle sowie unter Umständen zu einem Abtrennvorgang kleiner Partikel erhöhter Temperatur. Sowohl die heißen Reibflächen als auch die abgetrennten Partikel stellen potentielle Zündquellen explosionsfähiger Atmosphären dar. Edelstahl ist für Geräte für die Verwendung zum bestimmungsgemäßen Gebrauch im explosionsgefährdeten Bereich insbesondere in der Chemie ein wichtiger Konstruktionswerkstoff. Die Ergebnisse des Forschungsprojektes "Entwicklung normativer Anforderungen an explosionsgeschützte nichtelektrische Geräte resultierend aus der Zündfähigkeit mechanisch erzeugter Schlagfunken (NAMES)" zeigen, dass Schlagvorgänge mit Edelstählen eine erhebliche Zündgefahr von explosionsfähigen Brenngasgemischen darstellen können. Dabei bestehen jedoch mitunter deutliche Unterschiede zwischen den verschiedenen Brenngasgemischen. Besonders hohe Zündwahrscheinlichkeiten konnten bei Brenngasgemischen mit Brenngasen der IEC-Explosionsgruppe IIC beobachtet werden, die Acetylen bzw. Wasserstoff als Brenngas enthielten. Schläge im Wasserstoff/Luft-Gemisch waren dabei jedoch bedeutend zündwirksamer. In diesem Gasgemisch konnte bei niedrigen maximalen Schlagenergien bis 60 J sogar eine mitunter höhere relative Zündhäufigkeit beobachtet werden als bei Versuchen mit unlegiertem Baustahl. The intensity of the resonance will be estimated in frequency domain by using three separated spectra. At first, the excitation spectrum of the modal forces is built by the mode shape and the passage time of the train over the bridge. The second spectrum is the frequency response function of the bridge which include the modal frequency, damping and mass. The third part is the spectrum of the axle sequence of the train. The influences of train speed, bridge length, bridge support, track irregularities, and train type on the resonance amplitudes will be analysed for each of these spectra separately for getting a better insight. A variety of axle-sequence spectra and corresponding rules will be presented for different vehicles and trains. As examples, the passage of a slow freight train over a long-span bridge, a normal passenger train over a medium-span bridge, and a high-speed train over a short bridge will be analysed. Corresponding measurements show the amplification, but also the cancellation of the subsequent axle responses. Namely in one of the measurement examples, the first mode of the bridge was amplified and the second mode was cancelled at a low speed of the train and vice versa at a higher speed. The mechanical properties of the FPUFs were evaluated by a universal testing machine. The pyrolysis behaviors and the evolved gas analysis were done by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and TGA coupled with Fourier-transform infrared (TG-FTIR), respectively. The fire behaviors were studied by limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL 94 test for horizontal burning of cellular materials (UL 94 HBF), and cone calorimeter measurement. Scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) was used to examine the cellular structure's morphology and the postfire char residue of the FPUFs. LOI and UL 94 HBF tests of all the flame retarded samples show improved flame retardancy. BDMPP plays an essential role in the gas phase because it significantly reduces the effective heat of combustion (EHC). This study highlights the synergistic effect caused by the combination of BDMPP and EG. The measured char yield from TGA is greater than the sum of individual effects. No dripping phenomenon occurs during burning for FPUF-BDMPP-EGs, as demonstrated by the result of the UL 94 HBF test. EG performs excellently on smoke suppression during burning, as evident in the result of the cone calorimeter test. MA reduces the peak heat release rate (pHRR) significantly. The synergistic effect of the combination of BDMPP and EG as well as MA offers an approach to enhance flame retardancy and smoke suppression. The reason is that the melted material may convey the flame from one point to another, expanding fire and contributing to the fire load. In this article, the capability of a new computational strategy based on the particle finite element method for simulating a bench-scale cables burning test is analyzed. The use bench-scale test has been previously used to simulate the full-scale test described in EN 50399. As the air effect is neglected, a simple combustion model is included. The samples selected are two cables consisting of a copper core and differently flame retarded thermoplastic polyurethane sheets. The key modeling parameters were determined from different literature sources as well as experimentally. During the experiment, the specimen was burned under the test set-up condition recording the process and measuring the temperature evolution by means of three thermocouples. Next, the test was reproduced numerically and compared with a real fire test. The numerical results show that the particle finite element method can accurately predict the evolution of the temperature and the melting of the jacket. Currently employed methods of testing MEC of a dust cloud or LEL of a hybrid mixture are based on arbitrary assumptions and possess technical limitations that often lead to values of MEC/LEL, which are unrealistically low or poorly reproducible. This contribution presents an improved method for experimental determination of MEC of a combustible dust cloud or LEL of a flammable gas or hybrid mixture. The new set-up operates under laminar conditions and allows a uniform suspension of dust particles in an open top acrylic glass tube. Dust concentration is measured with the help of infrared sensors installed a few centimeters above and below the ignition source. In order to evaluate the dependence of MEC on flow front velocity, MEC of lycopodium was determined at four flow velocities. The results show that the flow field intensity does not significantly influence the MEC of lycopodium for the flow ranges tested in this work. Moreover, LEL of hybrid mixtures of lycopodium and methane was also tested at flow velocities of 4.7 cm/s, 5.8 cm/s, 7 cm/s and 11 cm/s and compared with the values obtained from other sources. The results suggest that the requirement of high energy pyrotechnical igniter may be relinquished, provided that a truly homogeneous suspension of dust particles could be achieved. Moreover, the effect of relative amount of dust and gas, on the course of ignition and flame propagation in hybrid mixtures at their LEL, was studied by the help of high speed videos. For hybrid mixtures of carbonaceous dusts (like lycopodium) at their LEL, ignition occurs in the gas phase, however, flame propagation is only possible through a two-way interaction of dust and gas during the course of combustion. To detect and localize a 5 cm wide chemical trail, a detection criterion was developed that uses only relative changes in the transient phase of the sensor response. The reduction in signal strength dependence improves the robustness of its application. We tested our setup in first crossing-trail experiments showing that our flying ant robot can correlate an odor hit with the chemical trail within 0.14 m. All investigations were based on a generic “CCS cluster scenario” in which CO2 streams captured from a spatial cluster of eleven emitters (seven fossil-fired power plants, two cement plants, one refinery and one steel mill) are collected in a regional pipeline network. The resulting CO2 stream (19.78 Mio t impure CO2 per year) is transported in a trunk line (onshore and offshore) and injected into five generic replicate storage structures (Buntsandstein saline aquifers) offshore. Experimental investigations and modeling of selected impacts revealed beneficial as well as adverse impacts of different impurities and their combinations. Overall, no fundamental technical obstacles for transporting, injecting and storing CO2 streams of the considered variable compositions and mass flow rates were observed. We recommend to define minimum composition thresholds for each specific CCS project through limiting i) the overall CO2 content, ii) maximum contents of relevant impurities or elements, iii) acceptable variability of concentrations of critical impurities, and defining impurity combinations to be avoided. Both active method (CO2 diluting air) and passive method (CO2 replacing O2) were used. The TG and DTG thermal analysis tests were conducted to study the pyrolysis and combustion characteristics of dust samples. An alternative explosion criterion based on combustion duration time was used to determine MEC, and compared with the standardized overpressure method. Under 10-kJ ignition condition, as oxygen mole fraction (XO2) decreased from 21% to 10%, MEC of agriculture dusts and coal dusts respectively increased by around 5 times and 2 times. The active inerting method with a lower N2/CO2 ratio was found to have a better suppression effect on the explosion of the five carbonaceous dusts because the blend has a higher specific heat and a lower oxygen diffusion rate. A1 - Wu, Dejian T1 - Explosion characteristics of coal dusts in O2/N2 ambience: A novel method to determine limiting oxygen concentration N2 - The explosion characteristics of anthracite and bituminous coals in O2/N2 ambience were experimentally studied via a 20-L spherical explosion chamber with various ignition energies of 2, 5 and 10 kJ. A novel method based on combustion duration time was proposed for the first time, with an emphasis on the determination of the limiting oxygen concentration (LOC). The values of LOC determined by the alternative method were almost consistent with those obtained by using the standardized overpressure method, where the LOCs were above 21.6%, 19.8%, and 13.2% for anthracite coal and 11.4%, 9.6%, and 9.0% for bituminous coal when the ignition energy is 2, 5, and 10 kJ, respectively. But the newly proposed method was found to be much less affected by the ignition energy compared with the standardized overpressure method, taking combustion duration time as an explosion criterion thus had a higher efficiency and required fewer experiments. The results also showed that as oxygen concentration decreases from 21.6% to 14.4%, the maximum explosion pressure decreases from 0.4334 MPa to 0.1034 MPa for anthracite coal and from 0.5664 MPa to 0.3981 MPa for bituminous coal, respectively. Moreover, the effect of ignition energy varied with varying volatile matter content and ignition mechanism of coal dusts. The higher the volatile content, the less sensitive it is to the ignition energy. The newly proposed method will provide a reference for the new standard development, hazard analysis, explosion prevention and suppression by involving the use of inert gases of combustible powder industries. The food waste used in this work mainly consists of cereal, vegetable, and meat. To examine the processing procedures and parameters, three experimental groups (raw food waste, food-waste paste and food-waste paste blended with anthracite) and five variables (moisture content, sand size, sand-to-food waste ratio, air flow and food waste-to-coal ratio) were extensively investigated. Results show that raw food waste with 40% moisture content can be disposed by SSST with the mass destruction ratio over 90%. However, the robustness of SSST for raw food waste is constrained by the heterogeneous issue due to a variety of components and sizes of food waste. This issue is addressed through stir pre-processing of raw food waste as food-waste paste. The robustness of SSST for food waste is significantly further enhanced only if a slight mass fraction of anthracite (<20% of raw food waste) is supplemented. This provides an alternative solution for employing SSST for raw food waste with very high moisture content. It is in doubt whether the longitudinal ventilation strategy could still help to reduce the jet fire hazard of transportation with H2 power in the tunnel, considering the rapid development of the hydrogen energy. In present work, a numerical research on effects of longitudinal ventilation strategies on hydrogen jet flames in the tunnel is conducted. The results illustrate that longitudinal ventilation could affect the flame characteristics of jet flames greatly in the tunnel. The critical ventilation velocity increases firstly with the increase of hydrogen leakage rates and then changes little after a critical value. The predicted theoretical model of pool fires could well predict the critical ventilation velocity for hydrogen jet fires. With the increase of longitudinal ventilation velocity, maximum ceiling temperatures are decreased greatly. According to the heat releases, jet speeds and ventilation velocities, three kinds of flame bending characteristics of hydrogen jet fire could be observed due to different effects of the inertial force. At last, the stable thermal stratification could also be destroyed by large ventilation velocities but the corresponding ventilation velocity is far larger than the critical ventilation one. With the increase of longitudinal ventilation velocities, the height of thermal layer is reduced firstly and then maintained at a constant value. Results show that the overpressure-time profiles consistent with the dynamic evolution law of ‘approximately zero-1st overpressure rising stage-2nd overpressure rising stage-descending stage’, and ‘rate of overpressure rise-time’ curves exhibit the characteristics of multi-stages and multi-peaks, such as (dp/dt)(1,max), (dp/dt)(1,min), (dp/dt)(2,max) and (dp/dt)(2,min). Specifically, as the fuel volume concentration increased, both the maximum overpressures (pmax), and the maximum rates of overpressure rise ((dp/dt)(1,max) and (dp/dt)(2,max)) show a variation trend of increasing firstly and then decreasing, while the corresponding times (tmax, θ(1,max) , θ(2,max)) show a total different variation trend. Moreover, when YCH is lower than 1.88%, the value of (dp/dt)(1,max) is greater than (dp/dt)(2,max), while the value of (dp/dt)(1,max) was less than (dp/dt)(2,max), and when YCH was higher than 1.88%. The addition of N2 and CO2 can obviously inhibit the explosion intensity of hydrocarbon fuel, and the inhibition effect of CO2 is better than that of N2. Due to the synergy inhibition effect of the inert gas and ultrafine water mist, all the values of pmax, (dp/dt)(1,max) and (dp/dt)(2,max) diluted by inert gas-ultrafine water mist twin fluid medium were smaller than those diluted by sole inert gases. In addition, there are significant differences in the overpressure-time and the rate of overpressure rise-time profiles between closed and end venting explosions. The values of maximum overpressure and the rates of overpressure rise of the closed explosion were higher than those of the venting explosion, but the minimum rate of overpressure rise is a smaller one. Determining the maximum excess ceiling gas temperature (MECT) induced by cable tray fires in urban utility tunnels is crucial to evaluate the fire risks. A series of one-layer horizontal cable tray fire experiments to explore the MECT were carried out in a large-scale utility tunnel without mechanical ventilations. The number of cables on the tray was varied from 8 to 18 in the experiments. The experimental results showed that the cable tray fire burning could be divided into three distinct stages, including ignition, self-sustaining and decaying stages. In the self-sustaining combustion stage, the cable tray was found to burn relatively steady. The mean MECT was also investigated since it represents one of the main characteristics of the cable tray fire. By redefining two parameters (the heat release rate and the effective ceiling height) in three classical MECT models proposed originally based on pool-fire, these three models could be extended to be able to predict the mean MECT generated from the cable tray fire (solid combustible) within 20% deviations. Consequently, two novel models were respectively proposed to predict the mean MECT at the self-sustaining burning period and the instantaneous MECT of one-layer horizontal cable tray fire in utility tunnel, which would be useful in the field of fire protection engineering. It may pose a potential explosion hazard during the process of processing, storage, transport, and reduction/oxidation (redox). The explosion characteristics of iron dust in air were undertaken via a 20 L spherical explosion chamber with an emphasis on minimum explosion concentration (MEC) of iron dust. The alternative method of combustion duration time (tc) was used to determine MEC and compared with the standardized over pressure method. Two kinds of nano-sized iron oxides (Fe2O3 and Fe3O4) were used as inertants to determine the inhibition effect of different oxidation products. The iron dust explosion products with various shapes and sizes were found to be able to grow up 4–6 times of the iron dust for the first time. Adding small amount of Fe2O3 or Fe3O4 could reduce the explosion severity and sensitivity of iron dust. The MEC data determined by both methods were comparable. The addition of 5 % oxide has obvious inhibition effect under 1500 g/m3 concentration. With the increase of oxide concentration to 10 %, the inerting effect increases, and the MEC of iron dust increases more than 3 times. The increase of dust concentration will weaken the inerting effect. When the concentration increases from 500 g/m3 to 3000 g/m3, the weakening effect of 10 % Fe2O3 on the explosion pressure decreases from 38.45 % to 2.24 %, and 10 % Fe3O4 decreases from 46.21 % to 10.63 %. Unlike coal, biomass or aluminum dusts, the iron dust explosion was found to have a unique secondary acceleration of pressure rise rate for the first time. These results provide a fundamental basis to mitigate the iron dust explosion via solid inerting method without adding extra elements. The most important and most accepted excitation are the dynamic wheel loads from the passage over track irregularities. Dynamic wheel loads will be compared from parallel axle-box and ground vibration measurements at more than seven sites. Some low-frequency excitation of ground vibrations, typically between 10 and 30 Hz, cannot be found in the axle-box measurements. Therefore, other vehicle modes, such as rigid bogie modes, flexible carriage modes, rigid and flexible wheelset modes, have been analysed for additional excitation forces. These vehicle dynamics analyses give an explanation for higher axle-box results at high frequencies, but not for the excitation of the higher low-frequency ground-vibration component. Finally, the effect of the moving static train loads will be analysed. For a regular track and soil, the moving static train loads yield the quasi-static response which exists only in the low-frequency nearfield of the track. If the support stiffness is randomly varying along the track, the pulses on the track generate an additional low-frequency component which is called the irregular pulse responses. This component will be demonstrated by numerical analysis where all axle pulses are superposed in frequency domain. Materials were characterized multi-methodically, flame retardant modes of action quantified, decomposition mechanism proposed, and synergisms explained. Considering the large quantities of leather waste (LW) in industrial-scale production, we underline LW as multifunctional bio-adjuvants. LW enhances the flame retardancy of poly(ethylene-vinyl acetate) (EVA) containing phosphorus flame retardants (P-FR). Products/by-products of the invertebrate and vertebrate farming, respectively, are promising bio-based adjuvants in flame retarded bio-epoxy thermosets. While the addition of bone meal yields the formation of an inorganic shield, protein-based powders from insects provide an intumescent behavior. Different biomass fillers sourced from the cultivation of the mealworm beetle Tenebrio molitor are embedded in a bioepoxy resin cured with tannic acid and investigated regarding the fire performance of the thermosets. By means of spectroscopic and thermal analysis (attenuated total reflectance FTIR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis-coupled FTIR spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry), the influence of the biomass microparticles on the curing and thermal degradation behavior is evaluated. The final performance of the biocomposites is assessed based on fire testing methodology (limited oxygen index, UL-94, and cone calorimetry). Providing a high charring efficiency in the specific tannic acid-based epoxy matrix, the protein-rich adult beetle is further investigated in combination with commercial environmentally benign flame retardants in view of its potential as an adjuvant. For this purpose, the angle of repose is currently used for the UN approvals in Germany. Measurements were carried out on 12 powdery or granular substances applying the angle of repose measuring methods customary in the test centres. The results of the methods differ significantly from each other. In addition, some of the techniques cannot be applied for very cohesive or coarse-grained materials. The results for the angle of repose show a strong scatter for some constellations (coefficient of variation more than 20 %). Safety during transport of dangerous goods cannot be guaranteed with this currently practiced system of measuring the angle of repose. As a consequence, an alternative parameter to characterize the flow properties of bulk materials should be used in the recognized test centers for dangerous goods packagings, such as the Hausner ratio. This approach leads to more precise test results for the substances examined (maximum coefficient of variation 2.8 %). It also has advantages in terms of applicability and occupational safety. Since the flow properties are safety-relevant, both in terms of mechanical safety and safety against the release of dangerous substances, the testing practice in the recognized test labs should be improved and standardized. The burning behavior of free-standing PSA tapes and those used as a coating was significantly improved by using phosphorus-based flame retardants. Furthermore, it was shown that, depending on tape structure and substrate, the PSA tape can lower the fire risk by acting as an intermediate protection layer in bonded materials. Die Ergebnisse des Forschungsprojektes "Entwicklung normativer Anforderungen an explosionsgeschützte nichtelektrische Geräte resultierend aus der Zündfähigkeit mechanisch erzeugter Schlagfunken (NAMES)" zeigen, dass Schlagvorgänge mit Edelstählen eine erhebliche Zündgefahr von explosionsfähigen Brenngasgemischen darstellen können. Dabei bestehen jedoch mitunter deutliche Unterschiede zwischen den verschiedenen Brenngasgemischen. Besonders hohe Zündwahrscheinlichkeiten konnten bei Brenngasgemischen mit Brenngasen der IEC-Explosionsgruppe IIC beobachtet werden, die Acetylen bzw. Wasserstoff als Brenngas enthielten. Schläge im Wasserstoff/Luft-Gemisch waren dabei jedoch bedeutend zündwirksamer. The synergistic effect of EG and P-FRs mainly superimposes the two modes of action, charring and maintaining a thermally insulating residue morphology, to bring effective flame retardancy to PUFs. Although geometric irregularities at the wheel-rail contact are widely used, other types of irregularities, such as stiffness irregularities, irregularities from different track positions and irregularities in the wave propagation, were analysed in the present study. The track behaviour was investigated by a multi-beam-on-soil model. This track model is coupled with a vehicle model to calculate the vehicle–track interaction. The track model was also used for the track filtering, which transfers a track support error to the equivalent rail irregularity or, conversely, the sharp axle pulse on the rail to a smoother pulse on the soil. In the case in which this filtering varies randomly along the track, the pulses of the moving static load induce a certain ground Vibration component (“the scatter of axle pulses”). This effect was calculated by the superposition of axle pulses in the frequency domain and by a stochastic simulation. Simultaneous vehicle, track and soil measurements at a certain site were used to evaluate the different excitation and ground Vibration components. The agreement between calculations and axle-box and soil measurements is good. The ground vibrations calculated from rail irregularities and corresponding dynamic loads, however, clearly underestimate the measured ground vibration amplitudes. Only the static load that is moving over a varying track support stiffness can produce the important mid-frequency ground Vibration component by the scatter of axle pulses. Point break detection algorithms are used to locate the incorrect phase unwrapping points, so the temporal evolution of the phase retrieved at each position can be divided into several sections with different offset. In this paper, we propose to take into account the effect of the dominant frequency of seismic load on the stability assessment of tailing/earthen dams. The calculations are performed by finite element modelling (FEM) with the Mohr–Coulomb failure criteria. To separate the frequency content from other dynamic parameters describing the seismic wave, synthetic waveforms with identical amplitude and attenuation characteristics, but differing spectral characteristics have been used. The analysis has been performed for three different slope angles and two scenarios of seismic wave propagation. Consequently, the changes of total displacement and shear stresses depending on the frequencies have been determined and clearly show that lower frequencies cause higher stress levels and displacement. Finally, the response surface methodology has been applied to determine how different parameters affect the slope stability under dynamic load conditions. Overall, this study is a first step to improve the existing methods to assess slope stability when considering seismic load. The objective is to create a flame retarded epoxy resin from a commercial bio epoxy resin with halogen free inorganic and organic flame retardants, respectively. Alumina trihydrate, aluminum diethyl phosphinate, a DOPO-based phosphonamidate and ammonium polyphosphate seem to have promising performances. Properties are enhanced with different bio fillers: pyrolyzed cocoa shells and plant waste (provided by Otto A. Müller Recycling GmbH, thanks!), short fibers and nonwovens of the natural fiber kenaf, hydroxypropyl-ß-cyclodextrin and sulfobutylether-ß-cyclodextrin. Fire performance is investigated by cone calorimeter examinations, LOI and UL-94 ratings. Thermal analysis is given by TG-FTIR and DSC measurements. In addition, the influences of various parameters on the performance of the intumescent coating are analysed, including the geometry of the steel profile, dry film thickness of the intumescent coating, load utilisation level as well as the orientation of the member. Based on the theoretical considerations and results of the fire tests, it is evidenced that mechanically loaded fire tests are essential to assess accurately the contribution of intumescent fire protection coatings to the fire resistance of steel tension members with circular solid sections. Due to the thin coating thickness and the profile-following application, the architectural appearance of the steel structure can be preserved. EN 13381-8 provides regulations to determine the contribution to the fire resistance of intumescent coatings applied to steel beams and columns. The scope of this standard excludes tension members and steel members with solid sections. For products that have already been successfully tested and assessed on beams and columns, EN 13381-10 offers the possibility based on unloaded fire tests to extend the scope of application of intumescent coatings to tension bars with solid sections. This approach contradicts the national safety level in Germany, where mechanically loaded testing is mandatory. Therefore, a new part of the test standard series EN 13381 is currently developed to enable the application of intumescent coatings on steel tension bars with solid section based on mechanically loaded fire tests. BAM has already carried out numerous fire tests on loaded steel tension members with intumescent coatings. Currently, in the BAM research project FIRESTEMIC, the influence of the steel bar orientation and the profile type on the thermal performance of intumescent coatings are investigated. Both questions concerning the thermal protection ability of intumescent coatings were analysed based on three different test sets, which were carried out in the tension furnace (Fig. 1a). The fire exposure corresponds to the standard temperature-time curve according to EN 1363-1. This paper summarises the main findings from the fire tests conducted in the FIRESTEMIC project. The results serve as an experimental background for the proposal of the new standard. Regarding the bar orientation, a new test setup was developed and proposed for the new standard. The two tested commercial water-based intumescent coatings with applied dry film thickness from 1.5 mm to 2.5 mm showed only a slight dependence on the bar orientation. In terms of the steel profile type, circular and rectangular solid sections with identical section factor and applied dry film thickness were tested. It was observed that the circular solid bars with diameter 30 mm heat up faster compared to the solid rectangular bars with dimension 30×30 mm (Fig. 1b). Also at larger steel bars, i.e. diameter 40 mm and dimension 40×40 mm, the same trend occurred. Thus, it is recommended for the new test standard to allow a transfer of the test results from circular to rectangular solid sections.
