T1 - Technology adoption and digital maturity in the conformity assessment industry: Empirical evidence from an international study N2 - Technological innovation and digitalization are transforming industries and organizations worldwide. Digital Maturity Models often serve as a reference point to monitor the digitalization progression through prescribed stages. Yet, little is still understood about (i) how a digital maturity model should be designed and deployed in a specific industry setting and (ii) the association between digital maturity and technology adoption. Building on extant literature and extensive interviews with industry experts, we first develop a digital maturity model in the context of the conformity assessment industry (a globally regulated industry responsible for assessing compliance of organizations with standards and regulations). Second, we implement the model and conduct a survey across 1447 organizations in 15 countries. Our findings reveal that the digital transformation journey of the industry progresses along five stages of maturity (with most organizations in the early/ intermediate stages of digital maturity) with distinctive patterns of technical and managerial practices across all stages. Adoption of technologies is (unsurprisingly) associated with higher digital maturity levels - albeit that association does not hold for complex technologies (such as Blockchain) and is impacted by country specifics (measured by the Digital Skills Gap Index). Our study provides insights into digital maturity and the adoption of technologies in an institutional environment that is highly regulated and conservative, in which high integrity of service provision is primary, and digitalization is a secondary focus of organizations. While CSLs aim to mitigate environmental and socio-economic risks and support responsible market practices, current monitoring systems of CSLs often lack coherence, transparency, and methodological robustness. This study addresses this gap by proposing a conceptual monitoring framework specifically tailored to the bioeconomy, addressing the complexity of global bio-based value chains. Developed through a systematic literature review, a comparative analysis of 26 academic studies and 19 monitoring tools, and stakeholder engagement via interviews and co-creation workshops, the framework introduces a multidimensional structure for evaluating CSLs across three core functions: (I) Building Trust and Transparency, (II) Protecting Sustainability Areas of Concern, and (III) Driving Continuous Improvement. A pilot benchmarking exercise using the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) demonstrates the framework’s applicability and diagnostic value, revealing both strong alignment in some areas and performance gaps in others—particularly in the economic and circularity dimensions. The framework is designed as a dynamic and modular tool, suitable for use by policymakers, scheme owners, businesses, and consumers. Impressive work has been done on comparison exercises related to real-world problems in fields such as ecology, food, or health. In more recent attempts, measurements and comparisons were focused on calibration solutions which are the basis of most inorganic chemical measurements. This contribution deals with the question of how to achieve full and transparent SI traceability for the values carried by such solutions. Within this framework, the use of classical primary methods (CPMs) is compared to the use of a primary difference method (PDM). PDM is a method with a dual character, namely a metrological method with a primary character, based on the bundling of many measurement methods for individual impurities, which lead to materials with certified content of the main component. As in classical methods, where small corrections for interferences are accepted, in PDM, many small corrections are bundled. In contrast to classical methods, the PDM is universally applicable to all elements in principle. Both approaches can be used to certify the purity (expressed as mass fraction of the main element) of a high-purity material. This is where the metrological need of National Metrology Institutes (NMIs) for analytical methods meet the challenges of analytical methods. In terms of methods, glow discharge mass spectrometry (GMDS) with sufficient uncertainties for sufficiently small impurity contents is particularly noteworthy for the certification of primary transfer standards (PTS), and isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS), which particularly benefits from PTS (back-spikes) with small uncertainties, is particularly noteworthy for the application. The corresponding relative uncertainty which can be achieved using the PDM is very low (< 10−4). Acting as PTS, they represent the link between the material aspect of the primary calibration solutions and the immaterial world of the International System of Units (SI). The underlying concepts are discussed, the current status of implementation is summarised, and a roadmap of the necessary future activities in inorganic analytical chemistry is sketched. Many calibration and measurement procedures, however, rely on certified reference materials (CRMs) to obtain metrological traceability, especially in the broad field of chemical analysis. The metrological information of those reference materials is also provided in the form of certificates, and hence, their digitization bears the same automatization potential for quality assurance and traceability as the DCC itself. Although fairly similar, a reference material certificate contains some different information, and has a variable structure and proprietary requirements compared to a calibration certificate, as it is based on the dedicated ISO 33401 standard (formally known as ISO Guide 31) rather than the ISO/IEC 17025. Accordingly, the established DCC-schema does not fully fit the purpose of machine-readable reference material certificates. At the German Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM), we started to adapt the DCC-schema in order to derive a dedicated schema for CRM certificates. For the seamless digital description of its certified values and their uncertainties, the newly developed schema also utilizes the Digital SI and thus provides a direct link to BIPM’s digital reference point for a global harmonization of metrological quantities. Furthermore, the schema will also be suitable for non-certified reference materials in order to form a common data structure for digital reference material documents (DRMD) in general. As a validated XML report, the DRMD is also compatible with established digital security and verification infrastructure, such as electronic seals and the novel digital accreditation symbol. In this presentation we will highlight some of the essential differences between reference material documents and calibration certificates, but also point out their similarities, which well justify the derivation of the DRMD-Schema from the DCC. In addition to the metrological traceability and quality assurance, further automatization use cases by means of DRMDs are presented, ranging from database maintenance to machine learning for automated analytics. These relate to the impact of cultural dimensions and national ICT development. We use a negative binomial regression model with panel data covering 57 countries over a 12-year period from 2006 to 2017 to test our hypotheses. We find that the cultural dimensions future orientation, power distance, and institutional collectivism as well as high ICT development are driving factors for the diffusion of ISO/IEC 27001. However, in order to provide common requirements for the implementation of an information security management system, the internationally well-accepted ISO/IEC 27001 standard has not shown the expected growth rate since its publication more than a decade ago.In this article, we apply web mining to explore the adoption of ISO/IEC 27001 through a series of 2664 out of more than 900 000 German firms from the Mannheim Enterprise Panel dataset that refers to this standard on their websites. As a result, we present a “landscape” of ISO/IEC 27001 in Germany, which shows that firms not only seek certifications themselves but often refer on their websites to partners who are certified instead. Consequently, we estimate a probit model and find that larger and more innovative firms are more likely to be certified to ISO/IEC 27001 and that almost half of all certified firms belong to the information and communications technology (ICT) service sector. Based on our findings, we derive implications for policymakers and management and critically assess the suitability of web mining to explore the adoption of management system standards. T1 - Quality assurance in supply chains during the COVID-19 pandemic: Empirical evidence on organisational resilience of conformity assessment bodies N2 - Global supply chains rely on the compliance and safety of their products, processes, and facilities. These vital services (often referred to as ‘quality assurance’ or ‘conformity assessment’ services) are provided by Conformity Assessment Bodies (CABs). This empirical study explores the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on CABs as well as their response to the resulting challenges. Data was gathered through an online survey among all accredited CABs in Germany, which resulted in 555 valid responses. Taking a resilience perspective, we reveal that CABs were hit hard by the disruptions caused by the pandemic, albeit to different degrees, in part due to their type of services, size, and sectors served. Furthermore, we find that contingency plans do not directly cushion order declines (as the main indicator of the economic impact of the pandemic) but rather indirectly through helping CABs respond more quickly, which in turn mitigates their order declines. However, our results show that contingency plans can also have adverse effects if they hinder flexible reaction to the crisis. The findings of our study help managers and policymakers learn from the COVID-19 pandemic and improve the resilience of the conformity assessment sector and quality assurance in the event of future crises. The true potential of the QI is realized when its elements and actors are seamlessly integrated into a cohesive digital QI ecosystem. Recent developments towards industrial international data spaces enable such an ecosystem but require the integration of QI principles. Recognizing the lack of such a platform, Quality-X aims at setting the stage for the implementation of a QI ecosystem in international data spaces (IDS), GAIA-X and related German and European projects dedicated to secure data sharing. Quality-X is not about the construction of a platform; it is the creation of an inclusive QI ecosystem with harmonized interfaces. Instead of imposing rigid data structures, it prioritizes interoperability. Through the utilization of Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs), Verifiable Credentials, and Identity Hubs, Quality-X seeks seamless interactions across diverse service provider systems. This white paper introduces the concept and vision of Quality-X and discusses the general prerequisites for integrating QI processes within data spaces. Further on, we introduce existing testbeds, which will serve as an experimental proving ground for exploring various use cases related to the implementation of the vision of a QI-Digital. +++ Harmonisierte und interoperable nationale Qualitätsinfrastrukturen (QI) sind für die Förderung der Zusammenarbeit, des gegenseitigen Vertrauens und der Erleichterung des Handels unerlässlich. Das wahre Potenzial der QI kommt zum Tragen, wenn ihre Elemente und Akteure nahtlos in ein kohärentes digitales QI-Ökosystem integriert werden. Die jüngsten Entwicklungen hin zu industriellen internationalen Datenräumen ermöglichen ein solches Ökosystem, erfordern jedoch die Integration von QI-Prinzipien. Angesichts des Fehlens einer solchen Plattform zielt Quality-X darauf ab, die Voraussetzungen für die Umsetzung eines QI-Ökosystems in internationalen Datenräumen (IDS), GAIA-X und verwandten deutschen und europäischen Projekten zum sicheren Datenaustausch zu schaffen. Bei Quality-X geht es nicht um den Aufbau einer Plattform, sondern um die Schaffung eines umfassenden QI-Ökosystems mit harmonisierten Schnittstellen. Anstatt starre Datenstrukturen aufzuerlegen, steht die Interoperabilität im Vordergrund. Durch die Verwendung von dezentralen Identifikatoren (DIDs), überprüfbaren Berechtigungsnachweisen und Identitäts-Hubs strebt Quality-X eine nahtlose Interaktion zwischen verschiedenen Systemen von Dienstleistern an. Dieses Whitepaper stellt das Konzept und die Vision von Quality-X vor und erörtert die allgemeinen Voraussetzungen für die Integration von QI-Prozessen in Datenräumen. We investigate the performance of MICAP-MS in measuring Li isotope ratios in new and aged commercial lithium cobalt oxide (LCO) batteries. Our results show that MICAP-MS, operating under cold plasma conditions at 800 W with an 8 mm torch position, achieves results metrologically compatible with MC-ICP-MS, with a precision ranging from 0.6‰ to 3.4‰ for δ7Li values. MICAP-MS benefits from a dielectric resonator for uniform plasma, better ion velocity control, and higher energy efficiency. Optimal settings were identified with dwell times of 10 ms for 6Li and 1 ms for 7Li. The study of LIBs revealed that 6Li migrates towards the anode over multiple charge–discharge cycles, causing 7Li to accumulate in the cathode, a fractionation effect that becomes more pronounced with prolonged cycling. MICAP-MS provides a cost-effective, precise alternative to MC-ICP-MS, with lower operational costs and enhanced portability, advancing the study of isotopic fractionation and aging in lithium-ion batteries. T1 - Exploring quantitative cellular biomaging and assessment of CdSe/ZnS quantum dots cellular uptake in single cells, using ns-LA-ICP-SFMS N2 - High spatially resolved quantitative bioimaging of CdSe/ZnS Quantum Dots uptake in two kinds of cells is investigated combining laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and the spatially resolved analysis of dried pL-droplets from a solution with a known concentration of Quantum Dots. Single cells and dried pL-droplets are morphologically characterized by Atomic Force Microscopy. A number concentration of CdSe/ZnS QDs between 3.5 104 and 48 104 is estimated to be uptaken by several selected single cells, after being incubated in the presence of a QDs suspension added to a standard cell culture medium. Mono-elemental bioimaging at subcellular resolution seems to show a higher number concentration of the CdSe/ZnS QDs in the cytosol around the cell nucleus.
