T1 - Retardation mechanism of cement hydration by a comb polyphosphate superplasticizer N2 - The retardation mechanism of cement hydration as imparted by the addition of polyphosphate comb superplasticizer to model cement containing C3S, C3A and calcium sulfate hemihydrate is studied using XRD, ss NMR and calorimetry. Our findings show the retardation effect caused by the direct addition of polyphosphate comb superplasticizer differs significantly to that of conventional polycarboxylate superplasticizers. Conversely to polycarboxylates, polyphosphates, at a low dosage, inhibits the silicate reaction without affecting the aluminate reaction and formation of ettringite. Yet, at high doses, both reactions are hampered, and the induction period extended, followed by accelerated aluminate and silicate reactions. T1 - Performance of corrosion inhibitors in reinforced concrete elements under electrical voltage N2 - The current paper develops a novel accelerated corrosion test method based on Faraday’s law to investigate the performance of different inhibitors in reinforced concrete elements under electrical voltage. Using the proposed method two commercially available and three lab-made inhibitors were tested. Lab-made inhibitors based on potassium fluorosilicate and amine carboxylate showed the best performance over others. Furthermore, it is found that under an electrical potential environment beyond 3.6 V, the higher the concrete strength, the more efficient is the corrosion inhibition. Based on experimental results, a novel model describing the corrosion evolution in reinforced concrete was proposed. A1 - Mezhov, Alexander A1 - Schmidt, Wolfram T1 - Chemical and thixotropic contribution to the structural build-up of cementitious materials N2 - The structural build-up of fresh cement paste is often considered as a purely thixotropic phenomenon in literature even though cementitious materials undergo a non-reversible hydration process that can have an influence on the structuration process. In the current paper a method is proposed to validate the impact of the non-reversible structural build-up. It is shown that fresh cement paste samples lose their structural gain almost completely due to thixotropy while the structural build-up due to hydration can be observed but occurs in a significantly lower order of magnitude over the course of the first hours of hydration. In addition, it is shown, that the chemical component of the structural build-up accelerates with the onset of the acceleration period of hydration, while its contribution in the entire structural build-up remains constant. A1 - Mezhov, Alexander A1 - Schmidt, Wolfram T1 - Thixotropic and chemical structural build-up of cement pastes with superplasticizer under different storage conditions N2 - Synopsis: The paper presents the results of a study on the influence of agitation on the structural build-up of fresh cement pastes using a penetration test. It first presents results about the influence of the penetrating shape’s geometry on the influence on the cement paste specimen. Then, results are shown for the load-deflection curves depending upon time and agitation before testing. Based on the observation of the force required to penetrate the sample, conclusions on the structural build-up can be made. The observations were made over the course of time with samples that were left at rest and partly agitated before testing at different time steps. The setup allows to identify the contribution of the chemical reaction to the structural build-up process. The presence of superplasticizer obviously reduces the load that cement paste can withstand, while the loss of thixotropy is found notably lower than that of neat cement pates T2 - 13th International Conference on Superplasticizers and Other Chemical Admixtures in Concrete CY - Milan, Italy DA - 10.07.2022 KW - Thixotropy KW - Superplasticizer KW - Structural build-up KW - Texture analyzer KW - Penetration test PY - 2022 DO - https://doi.org/10.14359/51736058 VL - 354 SP - 13 EP - 24 PB - ACI Special Publications AN - OPUS4-58324 LA - eng AD - Bundesanstalt fuer Materialforschung und -pruefung (BAM), Berlin, Germany ER - TY - JOUR A1 - Mezhov, Alexander A1 - Zhang, K. A1 - Schmidt, Wolfram T1 - Interactions of Biobased Rheology Modifying Agents with Superplasticizer in Cement Paste N2 - Organic admixtures are an indispensable component of modern concrete. Thus, their purposeful application is not only technically and economically viable but in addition an inevitable tool to make concrete more environmentally friendly. In this context, the use of polysaccharides has increasingly gained interest in the built environment as sustainable resource for performance enhancement. However, due to its origin, biopolymers possess a vast variety of molecular structures which can result in incompatibilities with other polymers present in concrete, such as superplasticizers. The present study highlights effects of the joint application of different types of starches and polycarboxylates with respect to their influence on cement hydration and structural build-up of cement pastes. The structural build-up governs the key property of fresh printable materials -- buildability -- and it influences the mechanical properties after the deposition. The structural build-up rate can be adjusted by optimization of the mixture composition and the use of concrete admixtures. Additionally, it is known, that the environmental conditions, i.e. humidity and temperature have a significant impact on the kinetic of cement hydration and the resulting hardened properties, such as shrinkage, cracking resistance etc. In this study, small amplitude oscillatory shear (SAOS) tests are applied to examine the structural build-up rate of cement paste subject to different temperatures under controlled humidity. The results indicate significant influences of the ambient temperature on the intensity of the re-flocculation (Rthix) rate, while the structuration rate (Athix) is almost not affected. A bi-linear thixotropy model extended by temperature dependent parameters coupled with a linear viscoelastic material model is proposed to simulate the mechanical behaviour considering the structural build-up during the SAOS test. Nonetheless, to ensure reliability and structural integrity, standards and quality control are required in the future to bring this technology into the market. As the concrete is manufactured continuously, continuous quality control of the printing process is also required, i.e. comprehensive process monitoring. At BAM, a test rig will be installed, enabling the printing of concrete structures with a maximum size of 2 m x 1 m x 1 m (l x w x h). Here, process monitoring is the focus of the test rig. In this study, we show the results of the first pump tests, including the measurement of several parameters such as temperature and pressure along the supply system, i.e. from the concrete pump to the printer head. T1 - Development of a sample preparation procedure for Sr isotope analysis of Portland cements N2 - The 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratio can, in principle, be used for provenancing of cement. However, while commercial cements consist of multiple components, no detailed investigation into their individual 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratios or their influence on the integral 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratio of the resulting cement was conducted previously. Therefore, the present study aimed at determining and comparing the conventional 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratios of a diverse set of Portland cements and their corresponding Portland clinkers, the major component of these cements. Two approaches to remove the additives from the cements, i.e. to measure the conventional 87Sr/86Sr isotopic fingerprint of the clinker only, were tested, namely, treatment with a potassium hydroxide/sucrose solution and sieving on a 11-µm sieve. Dissolution in concentrated hydrochloric acid/nitric acid and in diluted nitric acid was employed to determine the 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratios of the cements and the individual clinkers. The aim was to find the most appropriate sample preparation procedure for cement provenancing, and the selection was realised by comparing the 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratios of differently treated cements with those of the corresponding clinkers. None of the methods to separate the clinkers from the cements proved to be satisfactory. However, it was found that the 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratios of clinker and cement generally corresponded, meaning that the latter can be used as a proxy for the clinker 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratio. Finally, the concentrated hydrochloric acid/nitric acid dissolution method was found to be the most suitable sample preparation method for the cements; it is thus recommended for 87Sr/86Sr isotope analyses for cement provenancing.
