Consequently, the materials are exposed to corrosive microbes, which this study examines in order to determine the implications of this exposure. Specifically, the study examines the exposure of laser powder bed fused AlSi10Mg (PBF-LB/AlSi10Mg) components to sulphate-reducing bacteria in an anaerobic environment. Is the specific PBF-LB microstructure a potential factor in determining or aiding biocorrosion? A prismatic specimen was exposed to sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) for two weeks. The sample was scanned by X-ray computed tomography (XCT) before and after SRB exposure. The two data sets were registered to each other (using the internal void distribution as markers, due to the corrosion of the specimen’s surface) to enable the evaluation of the corrosion damage. Virtual cuts of the 3D XCT reconstructions show a loss of volume and localised damage. The damage distribution aligns with the hatching pattern of laser exposure from laser powder bed fusion. Röntgenfluoreszenzanalyse an Handschriften des Spätwerks N2 - Erstmalig in der Hölderlin-Forschung wurde mit dem Projekt der geisteswissenschaftlichen Methodik – über die Beachtung der Wasserzeichen hinaus – ein materialwissenschaftlicher Ansatz zur Seite gestellt, um Arbeitsphasen im Werk Friedrich Hölderlins sichtbar zu machen. Zwei in mehreren Manuskripten klar unterscheidbare Tinten lassen sich mit einiger Wahrscheinlichkeit biografisch mit dem Zeitraum zwischen Hölderlins Rückkehr aus der Schweiz im April 1801 und seinem Weggang nach Frankreich im Dezember dieses Jahres in Verbindung bringen. Für den in den untersuchten Handschriften häufigsten Tintentyp liegen datierbare Belege zwischen Januar 1803 und März 1804 vor, anzunehmen ist seine Verwendung zwischen Oktober 1802 und Juni 1804. Er dominiert auch im Homburger Folioheft. Eine vierte mehrfach vertretene Tinte gebraucht Hölderlin nach seiner Übersiedlung von Nürtingen nach Homburg. Sie findet sich im Folioheft und in einigen Einzelhandschriften. Damit können die in der Forschung umstrittenen Fragen geklärt werden, a) ob dem Dichter das Homburger Folioheft bei seinem zweiten Aufenthalt in Homburg zur Verfügung stand und b) ob überhaupt Werkhandschriften aus dieser Zeit erhalten sind. Darüber hinaus lässt sich über die Röntgenfluoreszenzanalyse der Arbeitsstand in den untersuchten Manuskripten zum Zeitpunkt des Ortswechsels im Juni 1804 genau angeben. In particular, carbon fibers (CF) and carbon fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRP) play a central role in various industries such as aviation, wind power and electric mobility. With the increasing demand, the waste streams of CF are also growing, and their recycling is crucial for environmental compatibility and the circular economy. The difficulty of CF recycling is to separate the CF from the polymer matrix to obtain high-quality recycling materials. Processes such as solvolysis and pyrolysis are used, with pyrolysis being the more commonly implemented. However, the process for obtaining recycled carbon fibers (rCF) also has disadvantages, since the fiber lengths and qualities can be affected by the recycling processes. Safety aspects are also important, since carbon fiber fragments can be potentially harmful. Processes must be developed for treating carbon fiber waste streams, that ensure safety, since landfilling is not possible due to the plastic matrix. Large-scale experiments have shown that the thermal recovery of CF in waste incinerators is incomplete, which is due to the chemical structure of CF. Pyrometallurgical utilization of CF is considered a promising approach. Here, CF can be chemically utilized in these high-temperature processes in such a way that their conversion is improved while minimizing the formation of fragments that are harmful. In this context, studies on the reactivity of CF in such processes are important to verify the efficiency and safety of the procedures. In summary, the safe and efficient use of CF waste not only contributes to the circular economy but also promotes the decarbonization of the steel industry. The standard method to quantify PFCAs in water samples is liquid chromatography or, for additional quantification of ultrashort-chain PFCAs (carbon chain length of two or three carbon atoms) too, hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography, in each case coupled with mass spectrometry. However, there are a lot of laboratories using MS coupled to headspace gas chromatography systems (HS-GC-MS), usually to quantify a wide range of volatile organic compounds. While PFCAs themselves are difficult to measure with HS-GC-MS in water samples, this challenge can be solved by derivatizing the acids to more volatile compounds, like esters. This approach could enable laboratories using HS-GC-MS to analyse and monitor PFCAs in environmental water samples. By following this idea, we successfully developed a HS-GC-MS method to quantify PFCAs in ultrapure water. Trifluoric acid (TFA), perfluoropropionic acid (PFPrA), perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOS) served as exemplary analytes of PFCAs, which were derivatized with methanol and concentrated sulfuric acid to form methyl esters. The method was optimized by varying different preparation and measurement parameters, leading to limits of detection and quantification in the two-digit ppt-range for all four analytes. The method was than tested on various real water samples, including tap and bottled water, groundwater, landfill leachate, treated wastewater and impinger water from a sewage sludge incineration experiment. Furthermore, snow samples from a ski slope were analysed too. TFA was the most frequently detected PFAA, with concentrations in the ppt and low ppb range. The detection and quantification of the remaining three PFCAs vary with the sample types and sampling location.Our results show that HS-GC-MS is suitable, and enables laboratories with this technique, to quantify PFCAs water samples. Due to the high polarity and water solubility of ultrashort PFAS, the potential for bioaccumulation is low. However, the high persistence of ultrashort-chain PFAS will result in environmental accumulation, especially in aquatic environments, leading to potential risks for aquatic organisms and increased human external exposure through drinking water. Ultrashort PFAS like trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) are low to moderately toxic to a range of organisms. In the project we are focusing on detecting and removing PFAS, especially ultrashort-chain PFAS from contaminated groundwater. Therefore, we suggest developing and optimizing short- and ultrashort-chain PFAS detection, quantification, and removal. We will design passive sampling devices, which can collect and monitor the temporal profile of PFAS species in groundwater. This will allow us to analyze PFAS contaminations in German and Israeli groundwater using state-of-the-art novel analytical techniques. In addition, contaminated groundwater will be treated via a two-stage process, designed to concentrate the relatively low PFAS concentrations by novel membrane processes including closed-circuit reverse osmosis (CCRO) and mixed matrix composite nanofiltration membranes (MMCM). Soluble inks are based on plant or insect dyes forming a water solution. In the early European Middle Ages brown plant inks were usually produced from the blackthorn bark and wine. In contrast to these soluble brown inks, one of the oldest black writing materials was produced by mixing soot with gum arabic or animal glue dissolved in a small amount of water. From Pliny’s detailed account of the manufacture of various black carbon inks, we learn that producing pure soot of high quality was not an easy task in Antiquity. Iron gall inks are a borderline case between these two groups. They are produced from four basic ingredients: gallic acid, an iron-containing component, gum arabic as a binding media, and an aqueous medium such as wine, beer, or vinegar. By mixing gallic acid with soluble iron ions, a water-soluble ferrous gallate complex is formed. Exposure to oxygen leads to the formation of insoluble black ferric gallate pigment. Due to the variety of recipes and the natural origin of raw materials, there is a wide range of different components and impurities in writing inks. Since consumers may be exposed to these VOCs immediately after e.g. unwrapping of newly purchased products, reliable analytical methods are needed to determine air concentration profiles in the early phase of VOC emissions. Concerning typical sample sizes of consumer products, micro-scale test chambers (μ-chambers) were considered suitable for this purpose. In addition, compared to medium- or large-scale test chambers, μ-chambers require lower initial investment and operational costs, and offer options for emissions screenings where higher sample throughput is essential. For these reasons, a μ-chamber-based method to determine initial concentrations of VOCs emitting within the first hours of simulated product use was developed. The chamber air was frequently sampled on desorption tubes loaded with Tenax® TA, followed by quantification of emitted VOCs via thermal desorption gas chromatography mass spectrometry (TD-GC-MS). The method was assessed in a round robin test involving eight participating laboratories from 2 countries. Pieces of a rain poncho (sample area A: 2.01·10-4 m2) emitting cyclohexanone, phenol, 2-ethylhexanol, naphthalene and isophorone in significant concentrations were distributed as sample material. Each laboratory conducted triplicate emission tests over a period of 48 h in μ-chambers with volumes of 44 or 114 mL. The loading factors L of 4.57 m2·m-3 (44 mL) or 1.76 m2·m-3 (114 mL) and air flow rates of 24 mL·min-1 resulted in area-specific air flow rates q of 7.17 m3·m-2·h-1 in both chamber types. The temperature was set to 23°C and, if possible, relative humidity was set to approx. 50%. The chamber air was sampled after 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 24 and 48 hours. In addition, to assess the analytical performance, each participating laboratory received two analyte-spiked Tenax® TA-loaded desorption tubes for quality control (QC). Very low relative standard deviations (11–17%) were obtained for the QC test. The results of the emissions tests in the early phase (0.5–4 h) were also adequate, with acceptable z scores (|z|≤2.00) received by six to seven participating laboratories. All eight laboratories obtained acceptable z scores after the longer sampling periods (24 and 48 h). These hardy substrates accumulate rich polymeric matrices from their surroundings that in turn offer nutrition and protection to diverse communities and their theatre of activity, representing a new ecological niche. With our work, we aim to establish a holistic understanding of the interactions between microplastics and microorganisms within aquatic systems, and how these interactions shape their surrounding environment. In our research, we combine field sampling with in situ experiments, and apply high-throughput sequencing technologies to 16S genes and whole bacterial genomes. We demonstrate through our studies that biofilm communities exhibit no specificity to plastic polymer type but appear rather to be opportunistic colonizers more strongly shaped by spatial and temporal factors. While the polymer surface does not appear to elicit a selective effect on associated biofilms, our studies show that microplastics might shape communities in a different way. Based on our detection of carotenoid synthesis pathways and photosynthetic gene clusters among plastic biofilms, we postulate this new niche to shape a specific functional toolkit, adaptive among its members as a product of prolonged exposure to UV radiation at the sea’s surface. To fully assess the interactions between microplastics and microorganisms, however, one cannot consider plastics singularly but as a component within a more complex and interconnected system. It is known, for instance, that plastics can sorb significant concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in the environment. We show, in our work, that the PAH sorption patterns of microplastics correlate significantly with the structure of associated biofilm communities. Elevated concentrations of specific PAHs on microplastics coincided with the enrichment of selected taxa reportedly capable of hydrocarbon utilisation as well as a reduced diversity among associated biofilm communities. Here, we present a synthesis of our collective research on microplastic biofilms in the aquatic environment, the factors that shape them, and their interactions with nature. The rates of building material recycling have increased since 2000, especially for mineral waste. Nevertheless, the majority of recycled aggregates are used in technically largely unregulated applications (e.g. road construction). This downcycling leads to a loss of valuable resources for technically and economically valuable uses. The upMIN100 research project is investigating the question of whether and to what extent recycled mineral construction and demolition waste is suitable as an additive in earthen building materials such as earth plasters and earth blocks. The focus is placed on grain sizes < 2 mm, which are currently predominantly landfilled, as there are currently no regulations for their use in building products. In order to enable the use of construction and demolition waste, the technical feasibility must be ensured, quality requirements for source materials (e.g. limit values for pollutants in terms of health and environmental environmental compatibility and hazardous substances) and permissible proportions of recycled aggregates must be defined. To avoid negative impact on building occupants, the developed building materials have been tested in terms of harmful substances included in the mineral waste as well as emissions into the ambient air. Possible sources are PFAS containing consumer products. One common product that makes use of the material properties of PFAS is ski wax. Here, the PFAS ensure less frictional resistance, thus allows for increased speed. However, people who wax their ski with these waxes could absorb PFAS in their body, which can lead to health problems in the long term. Moreover, PFAS applied in ski wax abrade onto snow during use, which contaminates the environment. In our study, we analyzed various currently available ski waxes (2020s) and ski waxes from the 1980s with PFAS target analysis and with the sum parameters extractable organically bound fluorine (EOF), hydrolysable organically bound fluorine (HOF) and total fluorine (TF). Moreover, snow samples from the long-distance cross-country ski trail “Kammloipe” in the Ore mountains in Germany where sampled and analyzed with PFAS target analysis and the adsorbable organically bound fluorine (AOF) sum parameter to document the entry of PFAS from ski waxes into the environment. In opposite to the ski waxes from the 1980s much more ski waxes from the 2020s contain high (total) fluorine values. The highly fluorinated ski waxes contain up to approx. 6% of fluorine. The EOF and HOF sum parameters of the ski waxes are strongly decreased in comparison to the TF values (max. approx. 1000 mg/kg = 0.1%). But even the PFAS-free labeled ski waxes have EOF/HOF values in the low mg/kg range. In the snow samples from different spots of the ski trail, both the AOF sum parameter and the PFAS target analysis identified PFAS. Moreover, on a PFAS hotspot also soil samples were analyzed, which indicate that PFAS from the ski waxes adsorb after snow melting into the soil. Thus, our results show that the use of ski waxes is a possible contribution to the environmental contamination of PFAS, which is hopefully drastically reduced with the ban on fluorinated waxes by the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS). Die Ergebnisse der Untersuchungen zeigen, dass es möglich ist Anforderungen an den Geruch der Produkte zu stellen. Ferner wird untersucht und gezeigt, dass die bislang vorläufig festgelegte Schwelle einer empfundenen Intensität von 7 pi für die Zulassung von Bauprodukten gemäß Schema des Ausschusses zur gesundheitlichen Bewertung von Bauprodukten (AgBB) und Blauer Engel, als Beurteilungsmaßstab geeignet ist. Der im AgBB-Schema zugrunde gelegte Zusammenhang zwischen der geruchlichen Zumutbarkeit und der empfundenen Intensität kann mit den durchgeführten Messungen untermauert werden. Es kann gezeigt werden, dass bei Tests mit großen, ungeschulten Personengruppen etwa 70% der Probandinnen und Probanden Produkte mit einer empfundenen Intensität von bis zu 7 pi geruchlich als zumutbar empfinden. Zur Bewertung der empfundenen Intensität wird ein Vergleichsmaßstab verwendet. Die Einhaltung konstanter Bedingungen für die Temperatur und die relative Feuchte bei den Messungen ist von großer Bedeutung, da diese einen Einfluss auf die Messergebnisse haben. Daher werden Untersuchungen bei unterschiedlichen Temperaturen und relativer Luftfeuchte, die mit einer eigens dafür gebauten kleinen raumlufttechnischen Anlage eingestellt werden können, durchgeführt. Die Ergebnisse belegen, dass die Einhaltung konstanter Prüfbedingungen wichtig ist und zeigen deren Einfluss auf die Geruchwahrnehmung. In einem neuen Luftqualitätslabor der HTW Berlin können Innenräume unter standardisierten Bedingungen geprüft werden. Es werden vergleichende Messungen mit Emissionsprüfkammertests durchgeführt, um zu prüfen, ob ähnliche Ergebnisse erreicht werden können. Das Ziel ist es, die Räume später für sensorische Messungen mit verschiedenen Ausstattungen zu nutzen. Simultaneously, these hardy substrates offer nutrition and protection to diverse microbial communities and their theatre of activity, representing a new ecological niche. In our work, we investigate the interactions of microplastics in aquatic systems and characterise the effects of these interactions on associated microbial communities to better understand how these substrates might impact surrounding ecosystems. Demonstrating no specificity to polymer type, microplastic biofilms are shaped more by the strong influence of spatial and temporal factors. Microplastic sorption of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), in contrast, appear to be more strongly dictated by substrate type, with different polymers observed to sorb varying levels of different PAHs. These interactions between the different emerging contaminants were found in our study to have a significant effect on associated substrate biofilms. Elevated levels of specific 3- and 4-ring PAHs on polyethylene and polystyrene were found to coincide with a notable shift in community composition and structure, as well as a reduced diversity among biofilm communities. The findings in our study illustrate the importance of investigating the collective effect of pollutants in combination and their complex interactions in assessing their environmental impact. ISO 16000-28 provides the basis for odour assessment of products using a human olfactory panel. Through many years of experience and testing of these methods, it can now be assumed that reproducible odour ratings are available for many products used indoors. An odour measurement is mandatory for the Blue Angel for carpets and is being tested for environmentally friendly resilient floor coverings. Based on the results of an earlier project and new results of the upcoming study, the ISO should be revised and completed. The project investigates the odour and VOC emissions of building products based on natural raw materials. The data generated is used to address several issues, which are briefly explained below. Floor coverings based on linoleum and rubber are included in the Blue Angel eco-label with an odour assessment. The aim of the project is to clarify whether other assessment methods in addition to intensity can provide better information. Positive hedonics have an influence on the intensity assessment. Typically, building products show high intensity with low hedonic values. Results for wood-based products often show high intensity and positive hedonics. Based on these examples, an appropriate odour assessment of wood-based products for the Blue Angel, supported by research results, should be possible. The concept of the odour guide value which is based on odour threshold values was renewed in 2023. This approach will now be compared with the standardised odour measurement (16000-28). Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in indoor air can be determined by using passive samplers that are exposed to the air for a well-defined period of time. This sampling method is often used in environmental surveys, e.g. the German Environmental Survey (GerES). Conclusions about indoor air concentrations can be drawn from substance and adsorption material specific uptake rates. For the assessment of indoor air quality, highly volatile organic compounds may also be substantial, but for many of these substances realistic uptake rates and suitable analytical methods are lacking. A small chamber is used to generate gas atmospheres with constant concentrations of the analytes at 23 °C and 50 % relative humidity. For a large number of compounds, a very small flow of pure liquid VVOCs is introduced into the chamber via a syringe pump and mixed with a constant flow of clean and humidified air. A gas mixture from cylinders is also used for this purpose. Carbograph 5TD has already been proven as a suitable sorption material for active sampling for most of VVOCs. With this procedure up to 55 different VVOCs should be tested in this study. Stable concentrations of gas phase atmospheres of the first group of VVOCs (acetone, 2-butanone, methyl acrylate) were produced for exposure of passive samplers. Comparison of different adsorbent materials showed that Carbograph 5TD was the most suitable for passive sampling of these substances, with higher uptake than Carbopack X and Tenax® TA. Very strong adsorbents are not suitable for this experimental design as it adsorbs larger amounts of water. The effective uptake rates were calculated for the first three VVOCs on Carbograph 5TD tubes and an exposure time of 7 days. To better understand the actual releases of BPA from PC under environmental conditions, a newly developed methodology (Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing, BAM) was applied, which comprises a novel accelerated weathering protocol for polycarbonate (PC) materials, combined with an advanced analytical setup allowing for improved detection of BPA at trace level concentrations. The weathering protocol achieves a 13.6-fold acceleration compared to Central European outdoor conditions and simulates environmental stressors (global radiation, rain, temperature variations) in a laboratory weathering chamber, with simultaneous BPA release measurements using an organic isotope dilution calibration LC-MS/MS approach. Validation was performed in parallel outdoor exposure tests, by using haze and yellowness index measurements as reference parameters. PC sample types representative of major polycarbonate applications were examined: Samples with different levels of UV-protection as used in transparent sheets used outdoor in construction or housings in Electro- and Electronic applications as well as samples with a protective coating as used in automotive applications (headlamps, glazing and construction). Results demonstrated consistently low total BPA releases of around 0.3 mg m⁻² for samples with exposed PC surfaces, while releases from coated samples were significantly reduced by around two orders of magnitude. In all cases examined, the BPA release ceased to zero after a period of four to six weeks, equivalent to approximately 1 to 1.5 years of outdoor exposure. This suggests that potential BPA releases diminish to virtually zero after that timespan. T1 - Spectroscopic analysis shows crandallite can be a major component of soil phosphorus N2 - Phosphorus (P) bioavailability is crucial for the productivity of natural and agricultural ecosystems, and soil P speciation plays a major role therein. Better understanding of P forms present in soil is thus essential to predict bioavailability. Most studies on soil P forms differentiate between Ca-bound P (e.g. apatite), organic P, Fe-bound P, and Al-bound P. In our analysis of a Ca, Al, and P rich soil from the Kohala region of Hawaii, we identified the mineral crandallite, CaAl3(PO4)2(OH)5∙H2O, a mineral previously not considered to play a significant role in soils. Crandallite was first identified with powder X-ray diffraction, and then confirmed with microfocused P K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy, micro-infrared spectroscopy, and solid-state 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Crandallite XANES spectra were distinct from other common XANES spectra due to the presence of features in the post-edge region of the spectrum. Linear combination fitting of bulk P K-edge XANES spectra allowed the determination of the proportion of crandallite to the total P content, indicating that crandallite comprises up to half, possibly even more of the soil P in the samples. Crandallite is therefore an important and potentially overlooked component of soil P, which pedogenically forms in soils with high P, Al, and Ca contents, where it likely plays an important role in P bioavailability. This manuscript has over 80 marginal notes which have not merited scholarly attention. This article presents a comprehensive analysis of all the marginal notes, including an evaluation of their ink composition, a palaeographic assessment of the scripts, as well as a philological assessment of their contents. Combining these methodologies differentiates between the glosses of the scribe and those added by later hands and identifies their provenance, allowing us to trace the history of the manuscript via the emendations that took place in the scholarly communities in which the manuscript was studied. Con l'obiettivo di creare una storia dettagliata degli inchiostri neri, abbiamo elaborato un protocollo non invasivo per raccogliere dati statisticamente rilevanti sugli inchiostri da manoscritti datati e localizzati che coprono un ampio arco temporale e diverse aree geografiche. Il primo passo del nostro protocollo consiste nella selezione effettuata mediante riflettografia NIR e IRR. Le differenze ottiche tra gli inchiostri a base di carbonio, tannino e ferro-gallio sono meglio riconoscibili confrontando la loro risposta alla luce infrarossa: l'inchiostro a base di carbonio ha un colore nero intenso, l'inchiostro ferro-gallico diventa trasparente al di sopra dei 1400 nm e l'inchiostro a base di tannino scompare a circa 750 nm. abbiamo semplificato l'analisi utilizzando un piccolo microscopio USB con LED NIR (940 nm) e UV (395 nm) integrati, oltre a una fonte di luce bianca esterna. Confrontando le immagini sotto illuminazione bianca e nel vicino infrarosso, determiniamo la tipologia di inchiostro osservando i cambiamenti nell'opacità dell'inchiostro. In questo caso, gli inchiostri a base di carbonio non mostrano alcuna variazione di opacità quando illuminati con lunghezza d'onda NIR, mentre l'opacità degli inchiostri ferro-gallici cambia notevolmente e gli inchiostri tanninici diventano trasparenti. La nostra recente scoperta che gli inchiostri misti carbonio/ferro-gallici erano piuttosto diffusi nella tarda antichità e nell'alto Medioevo ci ha suggerito di tornare al metodo IRR convenzionale. Black writing inks in the period under consideration can be divided into three different classes: soot, tannin and iron-gall ink. The first one is a fine dispersion of carbon pigments in a water-soluble binding agent, the second one is a solution of plant extract from tree barks or gallnuts, while the third one contains both soluble and insoluble phases. This last ink is based on metal (iron) and is produced by a chemical reaction of soluble iron (II) with tannin in aqueous solution. Testing was conducted using the following techniques: 3-color photography, 3D-digital microscopy, scanning μ-X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF), μ- Raman and FTIR spectroscopy. I will give a short explanation of the principles of the techniques and explain the choice of the instruments. The main task of our work at the BAM required characterization of the inks and comparison of the ink as well as the composition of parchment. For the ink characterization we have followed the protocol developed at the BAM. Over the past four years, COST Action Euro-MIC (CA20130) has effectively addressed these discrepancies. Through regular meetings, conferences, and scientific exchanges, a large international network has been established. Many scientific findings and results have been achieved through scientific, interdisciplinary exchange within the international network. The upcoming presentation will highlight three examples (among many others) that have resulted in successful collaborations, third-party funding applications, publications, or outstanding results and emphasize that successful results in MIC research, facilitated by an interdisciplinary network, can lead more quickly to meaningful and application-oriented findings. Unlike the USA, Canada, and Australia, Europe has less developed cooperation on MIC. Although several research groups and industrial stakeholders are addressing MIC, discussions remain fragmented, and information exchange is limited. A truly transdisciplinary approach is rarely seen. As a result, Europe often relies on methods, preventive measures, and standards from other regions, as there are no equivalent European standards. This situation makes Europe a) highly dependent, and b) in some cases, unable to use certain measures or standards due to European legal restrictions (e.g., the use of biocides). In 2021, researchers established the “Euro-MIC” network, financially supported by the EU project “COST-Action,” to tackle these issues. Through COST-Action, Euro-MIC aims to facilitate necessary interactions, communication, knowledge sharing, and training for personnel and researchers across various disciplines. COST-Action supports network activities, workshops, training schools, conferences, and more. Euro-MIC aspires to position Europe as a leader in MIC, promoting ideas on par with other nations while upholding European values and ensuring greater protection for people, property, and the environment. In this presentation, I will briefly introduce the principles of COST Action and highlight the significant opportunities provided by this EU-funded project. The most convincing effect can be observed with sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB). There are many stakeholders who do not need to be convinced of this as there is ample scientific evidence clearly showing that SRBs corrode metal. However, many believe this is solely due to the produced H2S. Fewer people are aware that SRBs also have other mechanisms that can lead to corrosion, such as electrical MIC on metal (direct electron uptake from the metal used as electron donor). Despite this, many sectors or industries remain skeptical in several areas. When considering other classes or species, the skepticism increases even more. The reason is simple: microbiologist cannot consistently prove MIC on laboratory scale for all corrosive microorganisms. In contrast to materials sciences, where experiments can be narrowed down to a limited number of parameters, microbiology is too complex to simulate simply in the lab. Several factors are mandatory for the growth of microorganisms, consequently increasing the number of parameters. Even when making the system more complex, there are still unknown species in the field, whose growth conditions are not yet understood. We know via 16S rRNA analysis that the species is present, but that is all we know. If these samples are enriched in the lab, many species will not survive and their impact on the whole community cannot be investigated. Therefore, lab tests related to MIC works only for a certain number of microorganisms. This means the key-result for other disciplines are missing, and important numbers for calculating the lifespan of a material can only be provided with limited accuracy. This is neither satisfying nor useful for engineers, material scientist or similar professionals, and it is understandable. However, MIC occurs, and we need to address it in our infrastructure or other important areas. With this presentation, I aim to show the currently available techniques for testing on a laboratory scale. I will use SRBs and methanogenic archaea as examples to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of each method and point out where improvements are needed. The examples will be cross-sectoral and applicable to other sectors as well. This talk will highlight the currently existing challenges of testing MIC in the laboratory and may help generate creative solutions. One promising approach is the development of bioreceptive concrete façades, which support the growth of green biofilms directly on their surfaces. These innovative façades are anticipated to deliver benefits comparable to those of macroscopically greened façades, such as enhanced biodiversity and improved air quality, while offering the advantages of being more self-sustaining and stable systems once fully established. However, the development of bioreceptive concrete presents substantial challenges. Due to the interdisciplinarity and novelty of this field, standardized methods for material characterization and bioreceptivity assessment are currently lacking. This study proposes an approach for evaluating surface properties crucial for bioreceptivity, developed on differently structured samples of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC). Existing methods and standards from concrete technology are critically reviewed and, where necessary, modified to meet the unique requirements of measuring bioreceptive material properties. Special attention is given to the surface pH value and water retention characteristics, as these are essential for promoting microbial growth and ensuring the long-term stability of green biofilms. The observed surface characteristics vary according to the imprinted surface structures, offering a spectrum of material properties and enabling the evaluation of their impact on bioreceptivity. The findings presented form the foundation for subsequent laboratory weathering experiments, which will be discussed in a complementary publication. This contribution underscores how the materials employed in Tibetan maps reveal aspects of their context and trajectory. Furthermore, materiality, conceptualized as a convergence of matter and imagination, can yield even more profound insights into artefacts like maps. Through a detailed case study of a map of Mount Kailash in the tangkha format and a specialized material-scientific analysis of the colourants employed in its creation, this contribution explores how a map can ‘talk’ through its materiality. With this case study it will show how Tibetan Studies can benefit from interdisciplinary collaboration. Crossing the field’s traditional boundaries and working with other disciplines, we argue, is absolutely essential for serious research. The Divine Names should be written • by a qualified scribe • who is ritually pure • in the presence of a minyan (10 adult Jewish men) • in an appropriate frame of mind • without being interrupted However, when these scrolls were written it would have been impossible to verify any of this after the fact. While we do not currently have any way to determine how recently the scribes had bathed, or what they might have been thinking as they wrote, we can now know much more about the inscription of the Divine Name than these scribes ever would have guessed. It is sometimes apparent from a visual inspection of the text that the Divine Name has been written in a second stage, from irregular letter kerning or a different ink colour. Using XRF, we have been able to discover more instances of a different ink used for the Name, and have shown that in some cases the secondary ink was also used to correct the main text, suggesting that the later writing was done by a master scribe who also proofread the entire scroll. Using a Brucker M6 Jetstream, it has been possible to produce elemental “heat maps” of whole paragraphs or even large sections of a parchment sheet. Using such large samples of text, we can usefully compare the levels of copper and zinc used to write individual letters or words despite their relatively low concentration, which permits very fine differentiation of the inks used. The techniques presented here would also be highly applicable to assessing ink degradation, as they are able to detect much smaller differences in ink composition than had previously been possible. Multivalent chromosome chains may also play a significant role in speciation processes by increasing the likelihood of chromosomal translocations and promoting genomic islands of divergence. In European Reticulitermes, variability in chain length and stability both between and within species provides a compelling model system for studying the evolutionary importance of multivalent chromosome chains at intra- and interspecific levels and at different evolutionary time scales. For this purpose, single reference gas atmospheres of 76 pure VOCs (liquid at room temperature) and a group of 10 SVOCs and VOCs (solid at room temperature) were generated using two generation procedures. By exposing the samplers to individual components, it was ruled out that interactions in a mixture have a influence on the uptake rate. Another aspect was to precisely describe the methodology and the resulting uncertainties, as there are gaps in the literature in this regard. The selection of the compounds was based on the findings of the preceding GerES V study for which data was missing or needed to be verified. In each experiment, a number of six passive samplers was exposed to the test gas atmospheres in dynamically operated exposure chambers for seven days. The sensitivity of the uptake rates of a group of 10 selected VOCs to variations in exposure time, ambient temperature, and air humidity in a multi-component reference gas atmosphere was investigated. Here, a decrease in the uptake rate with the exposure time could be observed stabilising from the fifth day of exposure onwards. A significant effect of temperature and humidity on the uptake rate was not apparent. The determined uptake rates exhibit uncertainties of < 20 % for 71 substances, and < 10 % for 51 substances which are also in good agreement with the literature, if already published elsewhere. The quantity of investigated substances, the detailed description of the methodology used to determine the uptake rates complemented by the respective uncertainties, as well as the compilation of comparative data, contribute to a better assessment of the quality and relevance of such data, which had not been published before. This study, edited by Agnieszka Helman-Ważny, represents a pioneering interdisciplinary investigation into these rare and culturally significant objects. Knufia petricola is a model for these fungi as it is genetically amenable and has their typical characteristics. It is capable of colonizing and deteriorating minerals and produces extracellular polymeric substances that facilitate attachment. Objectives: The objective of this study is to understand how such an organism is able to grow in environments depleted of C and/or N. Method: K. petricola growth parameters (colony extension and thickness, biomass, CO2 respiration and carbon-use efficiency (CUE)) were analysed for different C to N ratios (C:N), changing both the C and N concentrations and sources. The study utilized a dual-scale approach, examining biofilm formation on agar (macroscale) and growth of a single cell into a microcolony in a microfluidic device (microscale). This methodology provided insights into the nutritional requirements and growth behaviours of K. petricola across different spatial scales. Findings: Our macroscale analysis indicated optimal growth at the C:N ratio of 60. The morphological analysis demonstrated that when nitrate is utilized as the N source, colonies tend to exhibit filamentous growth at their edges, especially when glucose is available as C source. In contrast, when ammonium is the N source, the colony surface appears smooth (Fig. 1A). Moreover, C or N depletion led to higher substrate penetration, mostly through filaments at the edge of the biofilm. Notably, the lowest carbon concentration yielded reduced biomass C:N ratio and the peak biomass C:N ratio was observed at the medium C:N ratio of 60, suggesting a potential correlation between C:N ratio and optimal growth (Fig. 1B). The CUE was however quite low, ca. 0.4-0.6, being lowest when C and N were limiting. Concurrently, microscale analyses of single cells revealed that increasing the C:N ratio from 0.6 to 60 caused (1) shorter cell cycles and (2) more branching, no branching formed without C and N (Fig. 1C). This led to a denser colony at optimal conditions and a rather extended morphology under C or N limitations. Conclusion: The findings demonstrate that the depletion of either carbon or nitrogen results in enhanced substrate penetration, predominantly through edge filaments. Notably, the optimal growth and peak biomass C:N ratio of 60 suggest both a correlation with and importance of the medium C:N ratio. Specifically, the lowest carbon input led to a reduced biomass C:N ratio, while the peak biomass C:N ratio was achieved at the medium C:N ratio of 60. Aktuell gehen dafür einige thermochemische als auch nasschemische Verfahren in Betrieb. Die meisten thermochemischen Verfahren arbeiten mit einer vergleichbaren Grundidee. Es werden Alkali-Additive wie Na2CO3 vor der thermischen Behandlung eingemischt. Die anschließend produzierten thermochemischen Rezyklate enthalten als Phosphatphasen Calciumalkaliphosphate wie CaNaPO4, welche zu hoher Phosphatlöslichkeit und Pflanzenverfügbarkeit in den Rezyklaten führen. Dieser Recyclingdünger wird nach REACH registriert, erfüllt alle Vorgaben der Düngemittelverordnung und kann in der Landwirtschaft breit eingesetzt werden. Die Eigenschaften des Phosphats, wie etwa dessen Unlöslichkeit in Wasser, entsprechen den Anforderungen des ökologischen Landbaus. In two BMBF funded research projects, BAM and FEhS examine the application of slags from future steel production in the cement industry. The project “SlagCEM” investigated the recovery of iron from BOFS while producing a mineral product with good cementitious properties. The reduction of BOFS to recover metallic iron along with the generation of a clinker-like material for the cement industry increases the viscosity of the BOFS. This would require a process at unfeasibly high temperatures of >1.700 °C. Therefore, SlagCEM aimed to modify the BOFS to reduce the viscosity to suitable ranges at lower temperatures of ~1.600 °C. A demonstration trial (20 tons) was carried out and the potential for substitution of OPC was determined. DRI-EOS investigates the utilization of increasing amounts of DRI-based EAFS in the cement industry to compensate the reduced production of GBFS. This requires an adjustment of the slag’s chemical composition and a rapid quenching to create an amorphous structure with latent hydraulic characteristics. The project studies the behavior of the modified slag during the metallurgical process and during solidification, any possibly negative impact on the cementitious or environmental properties as well as the potential to recover metals such as Fe, Cr, Mo and V. The final results of the project “SlagCEM”, finished in 2024, as well as the current state and insights of the project “DRI-EOS”, started in July 2022, shall be presented in this talk. This study investigates strategies to enhance the bioreceptivity of concrete cladding to support microalgae‑rich biofilms as a sustainable alternative to biocide‑dependent facade systems. Using a controlled dual‑species biofilm model and assessing algal vitality via PAM fluorometry, we examined how concrete composition and surface properties influence colonization dynamics. The results demonstrate that substrate pH and carbonation state are primary determinants of both biofilm establishment and organismal vitality, whereas nutrient supplementation exerts comparatively minor effects. Adhesion assays indicate that moderate mechanical stress can increase biofilm robustness, and laboratory rain simulations show that surface texture and near‑surface porosity promote water retention and enhance biofilm attachment. A synergistic interaction between the algal and fungal components was observed under specific stress conditions, offering a potential explanation for the reduced performance of biofilms when transitioning from ideal laboratory settings to outdoor environments. However, the evolution and selection of bacterial resistance to AMCs may threaten their efficacy in the long term. In addition, resistance evolution to AMCs may pose the risk for the development of cross-resistance to antibiotics. The assessment of unacceptable resistance risks during the authorization of AMCs is hampered by the lack of standardized test methods that quantify the adaptability of exposed bacteria to AMCs. Objectives: • To develop a standardizable method to determine resistance evolution of bacteria on AMCs (ALEE-AMC) • To assess performance and robustness of ALEE-AMC in a ring trial • To uncover the mechanisms underlying evolution of resistance to a metallic copper AMC • To use ALEE-AMC to assess the evolution of resistance on a novel, nano-particle-based AMC Methods: ALEE-AMC was developed based on an international standard to determine the efficacy of antimicrobial surfaces (ISO 22196). In the ALEE-AMC test, adaptive laboratory evolution is conducted by repeated cycles of AMC exposure and re-growth of surviving cells, selecting for increased survival, followed by isolation of evolved clones. Metallic copper was used as a reference AMC and Escherichia coli as a model microorganism in the ring trial. Evolved E. coli populations from the ring trial partners were subjected to phenotypic (antimicrobial susceptibility testing, ISO 22196) and genotypic (whole genome sequencing) characterization. ALEE-AMC will be used to assess the evolution of resistance on a novel, nano-particle-based AMC currently under development. Findings: The results of the ALEE-AMC ring trial show that repeated exposure to a metallic copper AMC can reproducibly select for reduced copper susceptibility in individual evolutionary lineages across ring trial participants. However, failure to adapt in individual lineages was also observed in all trials. Isolated evolved E. coli clones exhibited increased survival upon exposure to copper surfaces. Adaptation to copper did not induce cross-resistance to antibiotics because the antibiotic susceptibility of copper-adapted clones did not increase above the clinical breakpoint. Whole genome sequencing of the evolved E. coli revealed a high diversity of mutations, including mutations in genes involved in survival to antibiotics. These results indicate the existence of multiple, underexplored evolutionary pathways towards increased survival of antimicrobial copper surfaces. Conclusion: ALEE-AMC offers a standardizable platform to assess the risk of resistance development towards novel and existing AMCs, including nano-particle-based and metallic copper AMCs. Thermal disposal of sewage sludge has established itself as the preferred method of disposal, and the capacities of mono-incineration plants are being continuously expanded. Plants for phosphorus recovery, on the other hand, are currently still mainly in the construction, piloting, or commissioning phase. It is estimated that the plant capacities for P recovery planned today will not even be able to cover a quarter of the volume of these ashes in 2029. Therefore, temporary storage of the remaining ashes is currently being discussed to retrieve it later and process it in the P recovery plants, which will then be sufficiently available. It is currently unclear how such interim or long-term storage (> 1 year) should be organized. In addition to legal (fee) issues, the assessment of the technical feasibility of retrievability and the phosphorus recovery potential of landfilled ash remains open. The Institute of Environmental Engineering (ISA) at RWTH Aachen University and the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) are jointly investigating five deposited ashes that have been dug out and were provided by three landfill operators. The investigations focus on the physical and chemical characterization of these landfilled ashes and its P recovery potential during treatment in thermochemical and wet chemical processes. These results are evaluated in comparison with “fresh,” i.e., non-landfilled sewage sludge ash samples of comparable origin in order to determine the influence of storage. As a result of continuous and prolific use, mainly in aviation firefighting foams, thousands of industrial and military installations have been found to contain contaminated soil, groundwater and surface water. . Current decontamination strategies of PFAS-burdened soils mainly consist of adsorption methods using adsorbents for fixation of PFAS in the ground. A second option is the utilization of a “pump and treat” process, cycling polluted soils through a washing plant leading to the concentration of the pollutants in the fine fraction. Both approaches are cost-intensive and not intended for the direct decomposition of all PFAS contaminants. Furthermore, the contaminated adsorbants have to be safely thermal treated for recovery. Hence, there is a great demand for innovative developments, dealing with new strategies of tackling the PFAS problem. Previously, mechanochemical treatment of polychlorinated organic compounds in soils showed an efficient dechlorination. Thus, we investigated mechanochemical treatment of PFAS contaminated soils with various additives in a ball mill.
