These containers form a vital part of the multi-barrier safety system that ensures long-term protection of people and the environment. Their durability — especially their resistance to corrosion and mechanical stress — is essential, as they are expected to perform over time scales ranging from hundreds to hundreds of thousands of years. The findings presented here are taken from recent research studies out of the EURAD programme and also from the EURAD-1 ConCorD project (Work Package 15, 2021–2024), which reviewed the performance of various container materials, including copper, carbon steel and silicon carbide. The report covers experimental results under relevant disposal conditions, the impact of manufacturing and sealing processes, and the current capabilities of modelling tools to simulate the complex underground environment in which these containers will operate. In addition to summarising knowledge on traditional materials, the document highlights recent progress and remaining challenges related to innovative ceramic-based containers. Key issues include ensuring effective sealing and mechanical integrity, particularly under harsh and evolving conditions over long periods. The report also emphasizes the importance of understanding how different environmental and mechanical factors interact to influence container degradation. Neither corrosion nor stress alone can fully explain long-term behaviour, and both must be studied together. Finally, this state-of-the-art sets the stage for future work, especially the EURAD-2 InCoManD project (Work Package 9), which will build on these findings to improve testing methods, refine models, and explore promising new materials and design solutions for safer and more reliable waste containment. Pre-storage drying and the early stage of interim storage can subject the cladding to higher temperatures and higher tensile hoop stresses than those associated with in-reactor operation and pool storage. Under these conditions, radial hydrides may precipitate in zirconium-based alloys (Zircaloy) during slow cooling, which result in embrittlement of the cladding material and eventually a possible sudden failure of cladding integrity under additional mechanical loads. Especially long, continuous radial hydride structures and low temperature can cause severe embrittlement of claddings and finally failure by fracture even at small deformations. Therefore, the study of hydride morphology plays an important role in describing the brittle failure behaviour of the claddings. The focus of the presented research is on the development of appropriate numerical methods for predicting the mechanical behaviour and identification of limiting conditions to prevent brittle fracture of Zircaloy claddings. An established experimental method for characterising cladding materials is the Ring Compression Test (RCT). Some test results on irradiated cladding tubes after operation in pressure water reactors are publicly available. However, it is helpful to carry out studies on unirradiated surrogate claddings with similar material properties to reduce the effort associated with irradiated samples in hot cells and to perform material tests with a wider range of parameters. On the basis of such experimental data, load-displacement curves have been numerically analysed for a selection of cladding materials. Radial hydrides can cause a sample to break suddenly. Noticeable load drops in the RCT are caused by unstable crack propagation through the radial hydride network. The failure mechanism is quasi-cleavage in the hydrides and micro-void nucleation, growth, and coalescence in the zirconium matrix, with ductile tearing patches connecting adjacent hydrides. The cohesive zone approach was used to simulate the failure process taking into account the radial hydride morphology. Experimental investigations, numerical analyses and evaluation methods for both the deformation and failure behaviour of irradiated as well as unirradiated claddings of zirconium-based alloys with radial hydrides are discussed. Limiting conditions can be expressed in terms of fracture energy and cohesive strength. Using signal features, such as the first peak or envelope maximum, to calculate the ToF is error-prone in multipath arrangements or dispersive and attenuating materials, which is not the case for the signal onset. Borrowing from seismology, researchers used the Akaike information criterion (AIC) picker to automatically determine onset times. The most commonly used formulation, Maeda's AIC picker, is reassessed and found to be based on inappropriate assumptions for signals often used in ultrasonic testing and dependent on arbitrary parameters. Consequently, an onset picker for ultrasonic through-transmission measurements is proposed, based on a spectral entropy criterion (SEC) to model the signal using the AIC framework. This SEC picker takes into account the spectral properties of the ultrasonic signal and is virtually free of arbitrary parameters. Synthetic and experimental data are used to compare the performance of SEC and AIC pickers. It is shown that the accuracy of onset picking is improved for densely sampled data. The vessels are tested with acoustic emissions prior to bursting. It can be shown that major instabilities give rise to a significantly increased number of acoustic signals. The location of occurrence corresponds to the impact regions. The signals are studied in terms of their frequency content and it can be shown that high frequency signals experience strong damping so that there are only few recorded high-frequency events and even fewer that are locatable. The data is further used in a cluster analysis to assign the signals to different failure types. T1 - Alpine Crust and Mantle Structure From 3D Monte Carlo Surface‐ and Body‐Wave Tomography N2 - An ongoing controversy revolves around the detailed structure of the subducting European and Adriatic plates under the Alps and the adjacent orogens. Mostly based on P‐wave travel time tomographic images, slab break‐off at different times, reversals of subduction polarity and segmentation of the slab into independent units have been proposed. These processes may have important geodynamic consequences such as rapid surface uplift, past magmatic events or changes in the style of continental collision. However, some of the tomographic results are contradictory, particularly evident in the uppermost mantle where teleseismic P waves traverse the medium almost vertically with few ray crossings and a stronger dependence on the crustal correction. In this work, we present the result of an innovative joint inversion approach using surface‐ and teleseismic body‐wave travel times to mitigate some of the shortcomings in both data types. Applying a reversible‐jump Markov chain Monte Carlo approach, we simultaneously constrain the and structure and their uncertainties in the crust and upper mantle. The results indicate a continuous slab structure from the crust‐mantle boundary down to at least 400 km depth under the western, central and eastern Alps. The results, however, also suggest that fitting the data within their respective measurement uncertainties may not be sufficient to reliably determine the presence of a shallow slab break‐off beneath the Alps. A crucial element to characterize the behavior of the vehicles against the environment are the losses that such vehicles exhibit in a passive way, that is, without any involvement of power conditions. The energy loses due to the rolling, the drag and to the friction in mechanical components, have been assessed so far in terms of the stopping acceleration when the vehicle idles on a ramp. However, such a testing procedure produces some uncertainties due to the dynamic conditions that are considered. To avoid such critical limitations, in this paper a testing procedure and facility are proposed, which are based on static conditions of the vehicle at the initiation and at the ending of the test, which are assumed to provide a better reliability to the testing. Some preliminary theoretical analysis should be made in order to validate the operational principles proposed herein for such testing facility. The acceleration data was converted into a dynamic deformation by applying a transfer function defined using the Empirical Mode Decomposition Method. The transfer function was constructed using data produced on an experimental rig, and it was scaled to an existing subway system. The equivalent deformation improved the analysis of the dynamic loads that affect the substructure of the subway tracks because it is considered the primary load that acts on the track and substructure. The acceleration data and the estimated deformations were analyzed with the Continues Wavelet Transform. The equivalent deformation data facilitated the application of a health monitoring system and simplified the development of predictive maintenance programs for the subway or railroad operators. In this work, the vibrations of a scale-down railway vehicle are monitored during braking and their relationship with the friction coefficient between wheel and rail is found out. The vehicle is instrumented with encoders, accelerometers, and is controlled via Bluetooth. The tests are carried out with clean and friction-modified rails. The tangential forces transmitted from the wheel to the railcar’s body are visualized in time and frequency using a proposed correlation algorithm based on the outputs of the ContinuousWavelet Transform (CWT). As the pipeline network is not developed all around the globe, LNG needs to be transported via ship or truck. Double-walled tanks made of steel with a vacuum insulation are currently used to keep LNG at cryogenic temperatures (-162 °C; 111 K). The double-walled construction makes the tanks heavy and expensive. The vacuum insulation between the two walled structure ensures that the LNG stays liquid over the transportation time (boiling point of LNG: -162 ◦C). This causes a high temperature difference between the transported good and the ambient air. Furthermore, there are some restrictions in carrying out in-service inspection using a double-wall design. Therefore, alternative tank designs, such as single wall glass fiber reinforced plastics (GFRP), are of growing interest. The material properties of GFRP and tank insulation at cryogenic temperatures are investigated. Liquified nitrogen (-196 °C; 77 K) is used for all experiments at cryogenic temperatures for safety reasons. Thermal conductivity of different layers are investigated and compared. Mechanical properties are analyzed by performing 3-point bending tests on cooled specimen. When cooled, the specimens fail at a higher force, but all layers of the laminate fail at once. Further investigations into the characterization of material properties, such as CT scans are currently in preparation. Evaluation is done by FEM and in approximation via analytical solutions. T1 - A lowering friction treatment for railway materials N2 - A facility is proposed in this paper to apply a selective carburizing process to the lateral faces of a railways´ head, aiming to increase its carbon content and to decrease the friction coefficient in case that the flange of the railway car wheel gets in contact with the rail during turning. Such a treatment would reduce the energy that is lost during the turning maneuvers performed by the vehicle, further improving the energy efficiency of the railway car. The facility consists of a furnace, which should be set next to the rails´ hot-rolling facility, in order to use the available enthalpy. The proposed furnace is equipped with what is necessary to avoid the decarbonization of the remaining rail material, based upon batteries of oxy-acetylene burners that are installed at the bottom of the furnace, on the opposite side to the carburizing surface. An experimental facility is necessary to validate the operational principles for the equipment proposed in this paper. On the other hand, a study should also be carried out to assess the effect of any rail welding process on the carburized surfaces. A1 - Otremba, Frank T1 - Vehicle’s components damage N2 - The failure of vehicle’s suspension components has contributed to road crashes, while their defective operation can deteriorate the fuel efficiency of the vehicles. In this context, and when compared with solid cargo transporters, the road tankers would tend to produce larger roll forces during turning, as the curved shape of the liquid cargo container, shifts upwards the centre of gravity of the cargo. With reference to a rectangular cargo container representing the solid cargo situation, the increase in the position due to elliptical and circular tank shapes, can attain a value of 17% (100% fill, circular tank). In this study, experimental results comparing the lateral load transfer due to solid and liquid cargoes, indicate that the average force increase on the vehicle’s load-receiver side due to a liquid cargo, is 4.3%. To analyse the fullscale situation of both situations, that is, the higher position of the centre of gravity and the shifting of the liquid cargo, a simplified model is developed. The outputs from such a model when subjected to realistic operating conditions (speed and turning radius), suggest that the higher position of the centre of gravity due to using a non-rectangular cargo container generates an average force increase of 4.9% on the side receiving the load transfer. The incorporation of the effect of the liquid cargo, through the simple pendulum analogy, suggests that such an average increases to 6.76%, with a maximum of 8.35% in the case of the elliptical tank at 75% fill level. It is found that the average liquid cargo effect is 5.44%, which should be compared with the 4.3% of the experiments. Road tankers components would thus have a relatively shorter load cycle life than those of the solid cargo trucks. T1 - A Conceptual Design of a Self-Centering Centre Plate N2 - Turning maneuvers originate higher forces exerted on the rail and the loss of locomotive energy, at a rate that is function of several parameters that influence the magnitude of the developed horizontal wheel-rail forces, including the friction at the centre plate and the bogie´s yaw stiffness. However, such a friction at the contact surfaces of the centre plate is needed to mitigate the Hunting phenomenon when the train moves on straight track segments. In this paper, a self-centering centre plate is proposed, consisting of a lubricated centre plate, equipped with a spring- and damper-based self-centering mechanism. Simulation results of the proposed mechanism suggest that the energy performance in turns of a train car equipped with such self-centering centre plate is comparatively better, as the peak friction forces linked to the dry friction at the contact surfaces of current centre plate designs, are avoided. The quasistatic evaluation of the cargo-vehicle behavior represents a fast way to objectively determine the roll stability benefits of any potentially new tank shape. In this paper, the geometrical, quasistatic rollover performance of a convex bottom tank shape is compared with that of standard tank shapes, finding that in spite of the lower position of the cargo´s center of gravity in such a tank shape for the un-perturbed condition, it has the same performance as the elliptical tank shape when subjected to Steady lateral acceleration. That as a result of the large cargo´s lateral displacement. Consequently, the combination of a lower center of gravity for the cargo when it is not perturbed, and a Minimum lateral shift due to lateral accelerations inputs, define the conditions for an ideal tank shape. These encompass – in accordance with the IAEA SSR-6 [1] regulations – packages of the classification excepted, Industrial packages Type 1, 2 and 3 and Type A packages. Currently an upsurge in number and variation of these package designs can be seen in Germany, resulting from the phase out of nuclear energy in Germany as well as e. g. increased use of radioactive material for medical purposes. A design assessment regarding the package safety is required in the international IAEA SSR-6 [1] regulations. BAM operates facilities for the performance of all regulatory tests required such as drop towers for a wide range of package masses and dimensions, fire test, leak tightness measurements and pressure test facilities. Experiences with several package types are shown. Additionally, IAEA SSR-6 [1] requires the establishment of a management system for design, manufacture, maintenance, and repair of the packaging as well as for the preparation, consigning, loading, carriage, unloading and receipt of the package. Relevant for Germany, BAM has published guidance material on the process of management system acceptance in the technical guide BAM-GGR 016 [2]. The requirements encompass quality management plans for the manufacturing of packages including independent manufacturing surveillance and specific instructions for operation, maintenance, and repair of packagings. Examples for management system specifics and requirements are given. Since the latest edition of the IAEA SSR-6 [1] regulations an ageing evaluation including systematic ageing management measures are required for all kind of package types. BAM is going to update the guidance material BAM-GGR 016 [2] to support the stakeholders with relevant information to fulfil the ageing aspect for packages not requiring competent authority approval. The paper explains how the ageing aspect may be included in the safety evaluation process and the management system measures and will give an outlook for the future guidance material. T1 - An overview of test standards and regulations relevant to the fire testing of pressure vessels N2 - Fire exposure of storage and transportation vessels of hazardous materials (including pressure liquefied gases) can result in BLEVEs and other high-consequence incidents with large societal and economic impacts. To reduce risk most countries have numerous regulations, codes of practice and guidance notes covering the design, operation and maintenance of vessels and thermal protection systems. Yet despite such regulations there remains no internationally accepted fire test procedure for pressure vessel and accompanying thermal protection systems that is capable of meeting a range of regulatory requirements. This paper considers some of the regulations in place in the western world and considers the origin of these based on large and medium-scale testing conducted to date. It examines conditions found in these tests to propose a set of recommendations on which to base a standard method of test. These recommendations are proposed as being representative of a credible large pool fire scenario that may occur. T1 - Boiling and thermohydraulics within pressure vessels N2 - Exposure of pressure vessels to fire can result in catastrophic explosion and escalation of accidents. The safe transportation of cargo in pressure vessels therefore requires knowledge of what will happen to the cargo in the event of a vehicle derailment or rollover resulting in fire exposure. The chapter presents an overview of selected testing and modelling work undertaken to understand the thermohydraulic processes within a vessel that drive pressurization during fire. A series of experiments highlighting the importance of adequate design and selection of protection systems are summarized. It is concluded that pressure relief alone is typically insufficient to prevent vessel rupture, but the combination of relief and thermal coatings can be effective. T1 - Conceptual design of an active centre plate N2 - The efficiency and safety of railway transportation depend both on numerous factors linked to the vehicle, the infrastructure, the operator and the environment. Curved tracks are subjected to demanding situations due to elevated stress levels, as a function of the operating conditions and vehicle/infrastructure design. In such segments, steering forces are superimposed to lateral load transfers. The steering forces depend on the condition and the design of the centre plate and bogies’ suspensions design. While the friction at the centre plate provides the needed damping to mitigate the hunting vibration of the bogie in straight track segments, such yaw resistance originates high steering forces and rail damage on curved tracks. A centre plate with low friction at turns and high friction at straight track segments would thus be highly advantageous. In this paper, a centre plate design is proposed which provides a yaw-rotation resistance torque that depends on the bogie-car relative position. Two different designs are considered for that purpose, one that combines a spring-acted centring mechanism with a lower pair kinematics, while the other one involves higher kinematic pairs which should incorporate lateral damping elements. As a result of using an engineering design approach, the higher kinematic pairs-based design is recommended however, the validation of such operational principles, including the introduction of the needed damping, should be configured on the basis of experimental models. A critical review N2 - The transportation of liquids involves several situations derived from the curved shape of the cargo containers, including a comparatively high center of gravity, which negatively shifts when the container is partially loaded, and the vehicle is subjected to steering or braking accelerations. Aiming at reducing these effects several experimental approaches have been applied, involving different tank shapes and the use of baffles, tested under laboratory or field conditions, at full scale or at a down-scale. However, the scope of such approaches has been limited, mainly because the potential effect of other components of the vehicle on the road tanker behavior, has been neglected. In this paper, a critical review is presented of the experimental approaches considered so far, identifying specific experimental needs to improve the performance of the vehicles, from both the road safety and the environmental perspective. T1 - Liquid cargo effect on load transfer under orthogonal accelerations N2 - A methodology is proposed for the experimental analysis of the liquid cargo effect under combined orthogonal accelerations. To simultaneously subject the vehicle-cargo system to longitudinal and lateral accelerations, the vehicle is set obliquely on a tilt table. The experimental outputs suggest that there is a significant effect of the liquid cargo on the lateral load transfer ratio (LTR), on the order of 20%, which is attributable to the resulting shifting of the liquid cargo’s centre of gravity. That is, the peak LTR values due exclusively to sloshing were not significant, in such a way that the liquid cargo would only pose a safety risk under a steady acceleration input. Also, the inverse of the product of the magnitude of the acceleration times the free surface length, correlates with the liquid cargo effect. That is, the magnitude of the input acceleration is not fully determinant for greater load transfers. The drop tests are usually carried out experimentally and, as an additional measure, finite element analyses (FEA) are performed. A specific part of the investigations presented is the evaluation of the welding seam connecting cask shell and cask bottom. Experimental results and FEA are presented and compared. The evaluation of the welding seam performed includes a variety of aspects. In addition to the experimental and analytical stresses determined, different standards are used to investigate a possible crack initiation. Several destructive and non-destructive tests are performed for quality assurance in the manufacturing process as well as for different input parameters. The necessary monitoring and non-destructive measurement methods to define the boundary conditions of the standards are introduced. Taking into account all required parameters, the welding seam is examined and evaluated using the failure assessment diagrams (FAD) of the respective standards. It can be shown under the given boundary conditions that considering the experimental data, the welding seam is in the context of crack initiation below the enveloping curve in the acceptable region. More critical drop tests to be conducted are proposed and need to be investigated in future work. A drop test only represents one set of a package and test parameters. A further parameter analysis is considered to account for allowable variations of packaging properties (e.g. resulting from the manufacturing process) and, based on IAEA requirements, the temperature dependence of the material behaviour. For packages intended to be used for shipment after storage the consideration of the effects of ageing mechanisms during storage in safety analyses and the implementation of corresponding instructions for operation and maintenance are required. Therefore, these packages have been maintained during storage in a manner that all requirements specified in the IAEA-requirements and in the applicable certificates of approval have been fulfilled. BAM is the competent authority in Germany for evaluating the thermal and mechanical design of packages for the transport of radioactive materials. In this context, BAM also evaluates the aging mechanisms and aging effects occurring during the long-term storage period of such transport packages. BAM has developed a guideline for the implementation of ageing assessment and of the measures for ageing management into the approval procedure based on IAEA-requirements. The goal of the presented paper is to introduce this guideline and the general approach for ageing management requirements and to describe the application to a specific package design. The type and amount of the ageing management not only depend on the use of the packaging, but also on the accessibility of the components that are considered in the ageing assessment. The different operating phases of a packaging are considered for the ageing assessment, such as loading, interim storage or transport. The implementation of measures for ageing management is divided into three levels – systemic measures, package design related measures and documentation. The systemic measures are attributed to the general management system and define the whole activities for organization of ageing management like structure, responsibilities, documentation, reports and evaluation. The package design related measures are defined in an ageing management plan (AMP). Therefore, an ageing surveillance program (ASP) and, if necessary, a gap analysis program has to be developed. The ageing management documentation (AMD) ensures the continuous documentation of the compliance of a specific package to the approved package design, comprising mainly records resulting from operation and surveillance. Safety assessments shall be conducted in compliance with the IAEA regulations and documented in a comprehensive package design safety report to obtain approval from authority. This comprehensive safety report evaluates a broad range of requirements from the regulations, including mechanical, thermal, shielding, criticality and transport requirements and controls, and testing assessments. Additionally, it encompasses supporting documents such as specifications, inspections, certifications, drawings, and guidelines in a variety of complex documents. Safety and manufacturing reports contain multiple interconnected sub-reports covering various topics. Changes, such as component modifications, material property updates, or regulatory revisions, often impact multiple sections of the safety analysis reports, making even minor adjustments complex and time-consuming. Each transport package has unique requirements, making every safety report distinct, despite following the same regulatory framework. Most documentation exists in standard digital formats but is often not machine interpretable. This lack of interpretability means individuals must manually identify and address dependencies within the reports. An AI-based documentation system that visualizes these dependencies would significantly enhance the efficiency of safety assessments. By linking interpretable content directly to datasheets, tables, simulations, experimental results, standards, and regulations, such a system would automatically identify changes and interdependencies. Related conditions could be validated using AI-based tools, reducing the need for manual intervention, improving both efficiency and safety. Human error plays a significant role in drafting, reviewing, and revising safety reports, often requiring iterative review cycles and multiple reviewers before approval. A digital quality infrastructure could reduce iterations and further improve efficiency. Integrating AI into this process could optimize safety assessments and enhance their robustness by leveraging interpretability to enhance safety. This preliminary study explores the readiness and requirements for using LLMs and RAG in the context of regulatory compliance for transport of radioactive material. By analyzing current documentation workflows, we identify how LLM-based tools can interpret complex safety reports and highlight critical interdependencies. We stress the importance of robust data governance, confidentiality measures, and AI reliability in this highly regulated context. Under current regulations, a mostly conservative strategy is employed, restricting the usage time of hydrogen pressure vessels without providing information on the real remaining lifetime. During the service life, pressure vessels are inspected periodically. However, no established method that can provide continuous monitoring or information on the remaining safe service life of the vessel. In this paper, we propose a sensor network for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of hydrogen pressure vessels where data from all sensors are collected and centrally evaluated. Specifically, we integrate three different SHM sensing technologies namely Guided Wave ultrasonics (GW), Acoustic Emission testing (AT), and distributed Fiber Optic Sensing (FOS). This integrated approach offers significantly more information and could therefore enable a transition from costly and time-consuming periodic inspections to more efficient and modern predictive maintenance strategies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based evaluation. This does not only have a positive effect on the operational costs but enhances safety through early identification of critical conditions in the overall system in real-time. We demonstrate an experimental set-up of a lifetime test where a Type IV Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessel (COPV) is investigated under cyclic loading instrumented with AT, FOS, and GW methods. We acquired data from the sensor network until the pressure vessel failed due to material degradation. The data collected using the three different SHM sensor technologies is planned to be evaluated individually, using data fusion, and AI. In the future, we aim to integrate the measurement setup into a hydrogen refueling station with the data stream implemented into a digital signal processing chain and a digital twin. Our approach represents, to the best of our knowledge, the first application of distributed fiber optic sensing for COPV Type IV monitoring, where the sensing fibers are attached to the surface, rather than integrated into the composite material. Specifically, we attach an optical fiber of 50 m to the pressure vessel's surface, covering both the cylindrical and dome sections. We note that our fiber optic sensing technique relies on swept wavelength interferometry providing strain information along the entire length of the optical fiber with high spatial resolution even at the millimeter scale. When the vessel is pressurized, the sensing optical fiber shows a linear strain response to pressure at every position along the fiber. After thousands of load cycles, the vessel finally fails with the optical fiber detecting and precisely localizing the damage in the vessel’s blind dome area. Furthermore, we discuss the potential of state-of-the-art signal processing methods and machine learning for advancing predictive maintenance. This could reduce the number of regular inspections, mitigate premature maintenance costs, and simultaneously increase the vessel’s remaining safe service life. We conducted continuous and real-time DFOS measurements during pressure cycling tests consisting of periodic pressure fluctuations between 20 bar and 875 bar, with a rate of 5 cycles min−1. During pressure cycling, the DFOS system measured strain changes, that under normal operating conditions were linearly correlated to changes in pressure. To detect and quantify damage-related anomalies, we trained a simple regression model to predict strain from pressure data and used the difference between predicted and measured values as a damage indicator. With our approach, the DFOS system not only detected and localized the damage but also continuously tracked its evolution in real time under dynamic pressure conditions. Furthermore, unlike previous studies where optical fibers were embedded within the composite structure, we applied them on the COPV surface, reducing both implementation cost and time while eliminating the need to modify the COPV manufacturing process. Based on our results, we are confident that DFOS can enhance safety and facilitate the transition from time-consuming periodic inspections to more efficient, machine learning-based predictive maintenance. Since that time, the formulated Larson–Miller relation, commonly known as Larson–Miller parameter, is a widely used time–temperature parameter for various applications, e.g. for rupture life, creep and relaxation analyses of metals and some other materials such as polymers, concrete and ceramics.Nevertheless, the physical meaning of this parameter as well as the determination of master curves are still the subject of major criticism. In this work, both aspects are reviewed and analyzed with data originally considered in thepaper of Larson and Miller based on the following approach: (a) the parameter was modifiedregarding a reference time and a reference temperature according to the time–temperature superposition principle; (b) master curves were generated for five materials investigated originally by Larson and Miller, based on a stretched exponential function type. It has been shown, that: (1) With normalized time and temperature, the Larson–Miller parameter corresponds to real logarithmic rupture time. (2) For the relationship between Creep rupture stress and the modified Larson–Miller parameter, the stretched exponential function is a good choice as a master function. (3) Corresponding model parameters have physical meaning and can be easily determined based on data from creep test data. Discussion of creep phenomena during initial loading of type 4 composite pressure vessels N2 - To maintain the highest safety standards for compressed gas storage in composite pressure vessels, a deeper understanding of their ageing mechanism is required. In the present study, the impact of an initial loading under increased temperature and sustained pressure on the safety of type 4 composite pressure vessels is investigated. Two designs of type 4 cylinders were manufactured, the only difference being the internal pressure function used during the filament winding process. Hence, their residual stress state and the quality of the composite layers varied. Ten pressure vessels were initially loaded under sustained pressure and increased temperature, and later subjected to slow burst tests. Comparing the results with cylinders tested in a pristine state underlines a significant improvement in the performance of initially loaded cylinders of one of the designs. This phenomenon was caused by a significant decrease of the scattering of burst pressures within a sample. At the same time, a slight decrease of the burst pressures could be observed. An explanation of this behavior could be supported by strain measurements with fiber optic sensors, which were embedded in the composite material. The strains measured during the initial loading indicate a stress redistribution, which has an impact on the strength of the pressure vessel. Moreover, an increased stiffness during the slow burst tests after initial loading was observed that indicates a better exploitation of the individual layers of the composite structure. The study supports previous observations on the increased performance after initial loading and provides new insights into the strain development in creep effects in type 4 pressure vessels. Current repository concepts are based on a multi-barrier system consisting of geological, geo-technical and technical barriers as an engineered barrier system (EBS). Considered host rocks are e.g. crystalline rocks, claystone, or rock salt. In all cases disposal containers are a crucial technical barrier to safely enclose the HLW, either spent nuclear fuel (SNF) or vitrified high-level waste (VHLW) from reprocessing. Depending on the repository concept and the respective safety case disposal containers guarantee the safe confinement of their radioactive inventory not just during handling, emplacement, and potential retrieval but also during the post-closure phase of the repository for a certain period. Required container lifetimes usually vary between 1,000 and 100,000 years depending on the selected host rock and repository concept. During container operation and their long-term disposal, they are subject to various mechanical, thermal, radiological, and geo-chemical/biological loads. Thus, mechanical stability and corrosion resistance in the long-term are among the most crucial challenges. Disposal container components lifetimes are typically calculated based on their time-dependent corrosion behaviour, with the implicit assumption that the design remains structurally stable for the required period. Even though, the durability of several component materials subjected to corrosion processes have been previously studied in detail, the interaction of mechanical processes and corrosion calls for further study, and assessment of the impact of joint degradation modes on component lifetimes will result in a more robust and defensible safety case. Besides, as corrosion occurs in a thin interfacial surface layer between the component outermost surface and the environment, specific R&D work is required to understand the long-term performance controlled by the entire engineered barrier system (EBS) and to feed simulation and extrapolations tools by representative experimental data for validation. Another approach to tackle the corrosion issue is to prevent and/or minimize it, thereby ensuring an even safer disposal. In this approach, materials much less prone to corrosion (e.g., copper, ceramic materials) can be used to fabricate the containers. Alternatively, protective coatings (e.g. copper coating) can be applied to current selected reference materials like steels. Both ways require validation of the materials durability under realistic, accelerated field conditions. The InCoManD work package 9 (Innovative and new Container/canister materials under disposal field conditions), part of the EURAD-2 European Partnership on Radioactive Waste Management (2024 – 2029), will address these issues through a collaborative project involving many countries across Europe (and beyond) with a shared goal. Building on the results of the ConCorD work package 15 (Container Corrosion under Disposal Conditions), part of the EURAD-1 programme (2019 - 2024), the InCoManD work package specifically aims to: (i) provide a better understanding of material degradation mechanisms, (ii) define optimised and innovative material solutions, (iii) develop comprehensive predictive models and common methodologies to enhance confidence in the results produced by each partner, and (iv) train new scientists in this field. Yet, under accidental scenarios such as fire exposure, MLI can degrade rapidly—leading to increased heat ingress and potential hazards like BLEVE or jet fires. To enable the safe integration of LH₂ into transport infrastructure and, eventually, broader energy supply chains, critical safety concerns must be addressed to gain public and industrial acceptance. This study inves-tigates the thermal degradation behavior of MLI under extreme conditions and introduces a model to quan-tify its impact on heat transfer. The results demonstrate that insulation integrity plays a pivotal role in sys-tem safety, and tailored mitigation strategies can be developed accordingly. These findings contribute essen-tial knowledge toward safer LH₂ storage and support the broader adoption of hydrogen as a sustainable energy vector. Innovation in alkali‐metal management, i.e., controlled storage, release and transport of liquid alkali metal, can enable simpler and cheaper cell designs. Porous carbons have emerged as potential host materials for liquid alkali metals. Here, X‐ray computed tomography is used to study the wetting interactions between porous carbon hosts and liquid sodium‐potassium alloy (NaK) as a function of carbon host morphology and surface functionalization. While as‐received carbon samples show no affinity toward NaK, heat‐treated carbon is spontaneously infiltrated with NaK filling almost the entire pore volume. It is explored how forced wetting partially fills pores of NaK‐repellant hosts, showing large differences in pore filling based on the average pore size of the host material. In electrochemical discharge experiments, it is shown that both as‐received and heat‐treated carbon felt enable high areal capacities beyond 40 mAh cm−2. However, the heat‐treated carbon shows ten times lower overpotential. Finally, it is demonstrated how heat‐treated carbon felt can enable capillary transport of NaK. In summary, this study elucidates important aspects of the interactions between liquid alkali metals and porous carbon hosts, generating insights into possible applications in liquid alkali‐metal batteries. The waste comes from operation and decommissioning of nuclear power plants, as well as from medicine, research and industry using radiation sources or radioactive materials. These types of waste are comparable to international low- and certain types of intermediate-level waste. The waste includes a large variety of products, materials and properties. The containers for such waste have the primary purpose of enabling handling and storing of the waste by safely enclosing the radioactive inventory and shielding of radiation. Due to the large variety of waste forms to be disposed of in the Konrad repository, different container types are specified to account for the different requirements related to each waste type. Each container design for waste disposal in Konrad has to be approved by BGE on the basis of the “final disposal conditions” (Endlagerungsbedingungen) and the respective “product control” (Produktkontrolle). For demonstrating the container’s compliance with the regulatory framework, the waste producers or container manufacturers have to apply for design approval on the basis of a comprehensive safety assessment including all relevant reports about analytical, numerical and experimental safety demonstrations and quality assurance measures for container manufacturing and operation. Usually, BGE commissions independent experts like BAM to evaluate these documents and the design testing (e.g. drop or fire tests). While the basic assessment principle is to verify the container design and quality to be in line with all regulatory requirements, there are often challenges associated with the container’s safety evaluation. As containers of different types have already been produced in large numbers and partially loaded with waste before the regulatory framework became effective (so-called “old” containers), they are considered in the regulations as well and safety assessments have to be provided in an equivalent way. As the requirements for the documentation of manufacturing quality were not yet known at the time these containers were manufactured, this is often challenging in practice. On the other hand, containers requiring the highest safety level (ABK II, sf) due to their nuclear content sometimes cause significant challenges and very long approval processes concerning safety demonstrations for severe accidental conditions like a 5 m drop without impact limiter onto a nearly unyielding target or a one hour 800 °C fire scenario. Furthermore, as the regulatory framework has not been updated for several decades, some requirements and the respective safety assessment methods have to be interpreted under consideration of the current state of knowledge in science and technology. The primary goal is to establish a transparent and comprehensible regulatory framework that accounts for different host rocks and operational phases, ensuring the safe long-term containment of radioactive waste. Given the current general legal formulation of these requirements, this study provides a systematic approach to defining them more precisely by integrating scientific and regulatory perspectives. An extensive review is conducted to gather relevant information about safety and design requirements for disposal containers in the respective types of host rock. The analysis considers host rock properties and conditions, operational repository conditions, and their impact on the container design, including key factors such as structural integrity, corrosion resistance, and shielding. Additionally, design specifications, boundary conditions, and expected loads (thermal, mechanical, radiological, chemical, and biological) are systematically reviewed, with quantified values provided where available. The findings support a comprehensive evaluation of both quantitative and qualitative container requirements concerning potential German host rock types, waste forms, and repository concepts. By establishing a clearer basis for defining these requirements, this project serves as a foundation for further refinement, with a more detailed structuring of requirements currently in progress. Such regulatory basis allows a more targeted approach to container development and ensures a transparent evaluation within the repository licensing procedure. Additionally, it supports decision making on the most favorable container design by considering repository conditions that provide the highest level of safety over one million years. This contribution explains the goals and concept of the research project KAnnE, presents its preliminary findings and conclusions, and provides an outlook on the final project phase. A1 - Seidlitz, Holger T1 - Influence of Internal Pressure Regulation During Filament Winding on Failure Mechnism in Type 4 Pressure Vessels: A Case Study N2 - Hydrogen storage is a crucial part of the hydrogen value chain, particularly in terms of safety and social acceptance of hydrogen technologies. For on-board and transportation applications, hydrogen is commonly stored as a compressed gas in pressure vessels. Full composite wrapped Type 4 pressure vessels are especially beneficial due to their high weight-saving potential and their capability to withstand high working pressures. To maintain an appropriate safety level, the mechanical behavior of the composite structure has been the subject of investigation in numerous studies. In this study, the failure mechanisms of two designs of Type 4 cylinders are investigated. The two designs differ solely in the manufacturing process parameters, particularly the internal pressure applied during the filament winding process. Variations in internal pressure result in different residual stress states and changes in the quality of the composite structure. The stacking sequence, materials used, and other manufacturing parameters remain unchanged. The cylinders show different failure mechanisms in slow burst tests: one design fails in hoop windings, while the other one fails in helical windings, despite no stress exaggeration in the fiber direction being observed with embedded optical fibers or in numerical simulations. To explain the failure mechanisms, the quality of the cylinders is investigated. The results of X-ray computed tomography and pulse-echo investigation, highlight the complexity of the interactions between manufacturing process parameters, residual stresses, manufacturing quality, and the mechanical behavior of composite pressure vessels. Resin-rich areas in the composite material are identified as a possible cause of the differing failure mechanisms. N2 - Considering the global challenge of energy transformation, the demand for energy storage solutions is increasing. One of the technologies, which is gaining attention, is the storage of hydrogen gas under high operating pressures. Particularly for on-board and transport applications, lightweight storage systems are advantageous. Therefore, fully wrapped composite pressure vessels of Type 4 are increasingly used. These are mostly manufactured using the wet filament winding process, which is characterized by numerous process parameters and physical effects. The choice of winding process parameters and variations in material properties influence the residual stress state in the finished component and thus also the stress state under operational loads. This dissertation includes insights into the impact of manufacturing-induced residual stresses on the safety of Type 4 pressure vessels, which contribute to a deeper understanding of the mechanical behavior of composite pressure vessels and support the further enhancement of safety levels and competitiveness. The work focuses on experimental investigations of the induction and development of residual stresses and their impact on the safety of the composite pressure vessels. A core of the dissertation is an exploration of the possibilities to improve pressure vessel performance through variation of manufacturing parameters and conditioning after manufacturing. The residual stress state is characterized in numerical simulations as well as with the destructive hole-drilling method. Embedded fiber optic sensors are used for the monitoring of stress redistribution during conditioning. The fiber optic sensors are later used for strain measurement in destructive, slow burst tests. Finite element analyses are performed to deepen the understanding of the failure behavior of the used 6.8-liter pressure vessels. Additionally, quality investigations of the composite structure using micro-computed tomography and impulse-echo ultrasonic propagation imaging are described. The results of the investigations show that an increase in performance is possible through targeted internal pressure regulation during the winding process pressure vessels. This is demonstrated almost cost-neutrally, i.e., without increasing process time and material usage. Furthermore, the improvement of vessel performance through conditioning under increased pressure and temperature is discussed in depth. This represents a further possibility to favorably influence vessel behavior and enhance safety levels.
