T1 - Investigation of process-induced strains development by fibre Bragg grating sensors in resin transfer moulded composites N2 - A comprehensive understanding of the development of residual strains in composite processing is essential to manufacture high quality composite parts. In this paper, the use of fibre Bragg grating (FBG) optical sensors was investigated to measure in situ the build-up of the process-induced strains in composite panels manufactured by resin transfer moulding. The FBG sensors, embedded in the composite laminate, successfully measured the evolution of the composite in-plane strains due to the temperature history. The sensors also captured a strain discontinuity during the cool-down related to the debonding of the composite from the mould. Finite element models were then proposed to simulate the strain development measured by the FBG sensors. Three different contact interactions between the tool and the laminate were investigated: no bonding, perfect bonding and frictional contact. The model using the frictional contact interaction described well the evolution of the measured strains. KW - A. Polymer-matrix composites KW - B. Residual/internal stress KW - D. The mPOF-LPG was embedded in a carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) unidirectional laminate manufactured in autoclave. Processing steps were established in order to insure that mPOF does not suffer significant optical and structural degradation. ED - Burnett, J.K. T1 - Optical fibre sensors for acoustic emission waves detection in composites N2 - In aeronautic and space engineering, safety is a major aspect. Periodical inspections by different non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques are performed to assess the structural integrity. The accuracy of such inspection is high ly dependent on the skills of the technician. To be more efficient automated procedures independent of human decision are needed. The costs for such inspections are also significant as they require immobilisation of aircrafts. Alternative on-line structural health monitoring (SHM) procedure capable to detect, acquire, and identify damage should permit important cost reductions but also safety increase from real-time damage assessment. The increasing application of composite materials in modern aircrafts and spacecrafts permits the development of such procedure from the embedment of sensors and actuators in the structure during manufacturing. Herein, the synthesis of layered hybrid NiFephenylphosphonate compounds from metal acetylacetonate precursors and phenylphosphonic acid in benzyl alcohol, and their Oxygen evolution reaction performance in alkaline medium, are reported. The hybrid particles are formed by inorganic layers of NiO6 and FeO6 distorted octahedra separated by bilayers of the organic group, and template the Formation in situ of NiFe hydroxide nanosheets of sizes between 5 and 25 nm and thicknesses between 3 and 10 nm. X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements suggest that the hybrid also acts as a template for the local structure of the metal sites in the active catalyst, which remain distorted after the transformation. Optimum electrocatalytic activity is achieved with the hybrid compound with a Fe content of 16%. The combination of the synergistic effect between Ni and Fe with the structural properties of the hybrid results in an efficient catalyst that generates a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at an overpotential of 240 mV, and also in a stable catalyst that operates continuously at low overpotentials for 160 h.
