Solutions prepared from such high purity materials using gravimetric preparation and the concept of molar mass are used as calibration solutions in many fields of analytical chemistry. Calibration solutions prepared this way provide the traceability to the SI and are the metrological basis in elemental analysis. The preparation and characterization of such primary pure substances, representing the realisation of the SI unit amount of substance, is undertaken only by a small number of National Metrology Institutes (NMI) and Designated Institutes (DI). Many other NMIs and DIs, however, prepare elemental calibration solutions as calibrants for their measurement services, such as the certification of matrix Reference Materials or the provision of reference values for Proficiency Testing schemes. The elemental calibration solutions used for this purpose are not a direct service to customers, such as preparing secondary calibration solutions, but provide the source of traceability for the other services. Hence, it is necessary for the NMI or DI to obtain data on the purity of the pure metals or other materials used to prepare the solutions with measurement uncertainties meeting the needs of the above described services. This is commonly undertaken as a “fit for purpose” assessment, appropriate for the uncertainty requirement of the service provided to customers. As a consequence, total purity measurements are a long-term strategy of CCQM-IAWG. Several studies were conducted (CCQM-P107, CCQM-K72 and CCQM-P149) on the measurement of the purity of zinc. From these studies, several conclusions can be drawn for the purity assessment of a pure (metallic) element. These conclusions will be put together in this document in order to assist all NMIs/DIs in performing a purity assessment, whenever needed. T1 - Certification Report for the Isotopic Reference Materials ERM-AE142 and ERM-EB400 N2 - Lead (Pb) isotope amount ratios are commonly used in applications ranging from archaeology and forensic sciences to terrestrial and extra-terrestrial geochemistry. Despite their utility and frequency of use, only three certified isotope amount ratio reference materials are currently available for Pb: NIST SRMs 981, 982 and 983. Because SRM 981 has a natural Pb isotopic composition, it is mainly used for correcting instrumental mass discrimination or fractionation. This means that, at present, there are no other certified isotope reference materials with natural Pb isotopic composition that could be used for validating or verifying an analytical procedure involving the measurement of Pb isotope amount ratios. To fill this gap, two new reference materials, both certified for their Pb isotopic composition, have been produced together with a complete uncertainty assessment. These new reference materials offer SI traceability and an independent means of validating or verifying analytical procedures used to produce Pb isotope amount ratio measurements. ERM-EB400 is a bronze material containing a nominal Pb mass fraction of 45 mg/kg. ERM-AE142 is a high purity solution of Pb with a nominal mass fraction of 100 mg/kg. Both materials have been specifically produced to assist analysts in verifying or validating their analytical procedures. Note that while one of these reference materials requires the chemical separation of Pb from its matrix (ERM-EB400), the other does not (ERM-AE142). Details on the certification of these isotope reference materials are provided in this report. T1 - Reference measurement procedures for the quatification of platinum-group elements (PGEs) from automotive exhaust emissions N2 - The major source of the anthropogenic platinum group element (PGE) emission is attributed to the use of catalytic converters in automobiles. This paper describes the work performed by three National Metrology Institutes (Laboratoire national de métrologie et d’essais, by the Physikalisch-technische bundesanstalt, Bundesanatalt für materialforschung und prûfung), in the framework of the Joint Research Project 'PartEmission' under the European Metrology Research Program. An analytical procedure based on a cationic exchange protocol and the isotope dilution or standard addition using an Inductived Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer, ICP-MS, for the quantification of the elements Pt, Pd and Rh from automotive exhaust emissions is described. Results obtained on a road dust certified reference (BCR 723) material showed a good agreement with the certified values, at ng/g levels, and relative expanded uncertainties within the range of 7–10%. Analysis of filters impacted with automotive exhaust particle emissions (from a diesel engine) showed the amount of collected PGE at levels of 10–1000 pg/filter. Their quantifications followed the developed analytical protocol that had been carried out with relative expanded uncertainties in the range of a few per cent up to 20% per filter. Nevertheless, a lack of homogeneity between the filters was observed, making the comparison between the project partners difficult in the sake of the validation of their analytical procedures on real samples. T1 - Assessing δ26Mg in bioapatite as proxy for faunivory N2 - Knowledge about feeding behavior is essential to determine trophic interactions and reconstruct predator-prey relationships in modern and past foodwebs. Traditionally, nitrogen isotopes (δ15N) of collagen are used to quantify the ingestion of animal protein, however collagen usually does not preserve over geological time scales. To infer the diet of extinct vertebrates from fossil material more resistant dietary proxies such as Ca and Mg isotopes are needed, which are major elements in the bioapatite of bones and teeth. Magnesium is a bio-essential element that replaces calcium in the bioapatite lattice and bone and enamel δ26Mg values of extant mammals increase systematically along the foodchain [1, 2]. The existing δ26Mg data, however, is scarce, in particular with respect to carnivores, thus still limiting the capability of this dietary proxy to reliably determine trophic differences between plant- and animal-feeders. To better constrain trophic-level effects recorded in Mg isotopes, we analyzed δ26Mg of bioapatite from modern mammals with a focus on faunivores, both carnivores and as yet unexplored insectivores. The trophic level effect of δ26Mg is influenced by the geological substrate which causes isotope variability in δ26Mg of faunal remains between different ecosystems [1, 2]. Therefore, as first-order proxy for sample provenance and to assess potential influences of the bedrock substrate of the animals´ habitats on δ26Mg of bones and teeth, we measured the 87Sr/86Sr on the same specimens. This information will enable us to refine trophic level effects and determine whether δ26Mg can be used to distinguish different faunivores isotopically. This article reviews the work in this field within the past years. The focus is on all stable elements, except for classical stable isotopes (H, C, N, O, S) and for radioactive elements. Currently available isotope reference materials are listed. The limitations of synthetic isotope mixtures being used to characterize these materials are discussed, as well as the limitations of the isotope reference materials, such as uncertainty and homogeneity. The needs for present research on isotope variations are being considered and are compared to the limitations of current isotope reference materials. This disagreement between both can only be solved by providing isotope reference materials defining a δ-scale for each element of interest. Such materials should be provided with additional data on isotope abundances whenever possible. As an outlook a possible outline for a new program on isotope reference materials is discussed. Provenance studies of artefacts, food and other products might become another one, as several recent studies demonstrate. Typically boron isotope determinations have been carried out by TIMS. To open up this research field to a broader scientific community we developed two analytical procedures for boron isotope determinations based on single collector SF-ICPMS combined with a sample preparation procedure consisting of dry-ashing and a three step ion chromatographic boron-matrix separation. The developed procedures consist of one low resolution (LR) and one medium resolution (MR) procedure. The repeatability for the δ11B determination in three independently measured aliquots lies between 0.2 and 0.8‰ for the LR procedure and between 0.3 and 1.5‰ for the MR procedure. The expanded uncertainties with a coverage factor of k=2 range between 1.4 and 1.6‰ for the LR procedure and between 2.9 and 3.2‰ for the MR procedure. The accuracy, expressed as average deviation from the reference values, is 0.43‰ for the LR procedure and 0.33‰ for the MR procedure. To test the practicability of the procedures the matrix tolerance has been investigated as well and was found to be up to 2 mg kg-1 of alkaline and alkaline earth elements in the final measurement solution containing 100 µg kg-1 boron. Thus a highly efficient matrix separation for SF-ICPMS boron isotope determinations is required, similar to TIMS. The method including dry ashing, a three-step ion chromatographic boron–matrix separation, and 11B/10B isotope ratio determinations using the Cs2BO2+ graphite technique has been validated using certified reference and quality control materials. The developed method is capable to determine δ11B values in plant tissue down to boron concentrations of 1 mg/kg with an expanded uncertainty of ≤1.7‰ (k = 2). The determined δ11B values reveal an enormous isotopic range of boron in plant tissues covering three-quarters of the natural terrestrial occurring variation in the boron isotopic composition. As the local environment and anthropogenic activity mainly control the boron intake of plants, the boron isotopic composition of plants can be used for food provenance studies. T1 - Purity determination as needed for the realisation of primary standards for elemental determination: status of international comparability N2 - Within the National Metrology Institutes (NMIs) and designated laboratories, an interlaboratory comparison, CCQM-P107, was conducted to verify the degree of international comparability concerning the results of purity analysis. The mass fractions of Ag, Bi, Cd, Cr, Ni, Tl at the lower mg/kg-level in a high purity zinc material were determined, but the real measurand in metrological sense was the sum of the six mass fractions. Homogeneity was investigated by glow discharge mass spectrometry, reference values were obtained using isotope dilution mass spectrometry. Six NMIs participated, contributing eight independent data sets. The agreement amongst the results of the participants, their median and the agreement with the reference values were usually excellent and in almost all cases below the target uncertainty of 30% relative. In this manner, the accuracy of results and the comparability between the participants was demonstrated to be established. Many routine procedures have been established based on X-ray fluorescence or inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. However, all of them require suitable reference materials to calibrate or validate. These reference materials ideally are being certified by reference procedures. The development of such reference procedures for sulfur and the four toxic elements cadmium, chromium, mercury and lead in plastics is described here. The procedures are based on double isotope dilution mass spectrometry including analyte–matrix separation. The applied mass spectrometric techniques are thermal ionization mass spectrometry as well as inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Memory effects of mercury and dissolution of chromium(III) oxide have been considered especially. The expanded uncertainties have been improved from the percent range down to the per mill range during the development of the procedure from the early analysis of BCR-680/681 to the recent analysis of CCQM-P106. With the fully developed procedures expanded uncertainties (k = 2) between 0.1 and 0.4% for cadmium, chromium, lead and sulfur and around 1% for mercury can be achieved. The so developed procedures have been successfully applied to the certification of reference materials as well as to intercomparisons organized by CCQM. Therefore a detailed study on the reduction of molecular interferences by a variety of collision gases (He, Ar, Kr, H2, D2 and N2) was performed. The efficiency of the reduction has been checked by high resolution mass scans. The argon based interferences disturbing the determination of 54Fe and 56Fe could be completely removed when using Faraday detectors. The interferences on mass 57 could be reduced to a level which enables accurate measurements. Also, the 40Ar12C interference, which disturbs the chromium correction, could be completely removed. Reproducibilities of 0.01% could be reached for 54Fe/56Fe isotope ratios and 0.02% for 57Fe/56Fe isotope ratios. Under these measurement conditions a sensitivity of 1.2 V per 50 µg kg–1 Fe is available. This corresponds to 1.5 × 109 cps per mg kg–1. Based on these results highly accurate procedures for Fe isotope ratio determinations were set up, reaching a performance level superior to that of other ICP-MS instruments. Consequently, IDMS procedures were developed on this basis in order to perform certification measurements at the highest metrological level. The first application was the contribution to the Fe reference value by IMEP-12, an interlaboratory comparison with approximately 350 participants worldwide. The analysed Fe mass content is 0.2150 mg kg–1 with its expanded uncertainty (k= 2) of 0.0012 mg kg–1(0.56%), which is ten times less than the uncertainty of the second certification laboratory. Another application was the certification campaign of the two reference materials Tea Leaves and Polish Herbs. The results obtained with the ICP-MS procedure, 542 ± 11 mg kg–1 and 543 ± 12 mg kg–1, were compared with the results analysed by TIMS, 541 ± 12 mg kg–1 and 541 ± 13 mg kg–1, and agree very well within the stated uncertainties (k= 2). The results presented demonstrate quite well the suitability of the developed IDMS procedures for certification or reference measurements. The analytical procedure is based on inductively coupled plasma isotope dilution mass spectrometry (ICP-IDMS) applied as a primary method of measurement. Two different sample digestion methods, an optimized microwave digestion procedure using HNO3 and H2O2 as oxidizing agents and a high-pressure asher digestion procedure, were developed and compared. The very high salt content of the digests and the high molybdenum content, which can cause oxide-based interferences with the Cd isotopes, were reduced by a chromatographic matrix separation step using an anion-exchange resin. All isotope ratio measurements were performed by a quadrupole ICP-MS equipped with an ultrasonic nebulizer with membrane desolvator. This sample introduction set-up was used to increase sensitivity and minimize the formation of oxides (less MoO+ interference with the Cd isotopes). Because of the very low Cd concentrations in the samples and the resulting need to minimize the procedural blank as much as possible, all sample-processing steps were performed in a clean room environment. Detection limits of 0.005 ng g-1 Cd were achieved using sample weights of 2.7 g. The method described was used to re-certify the cadmium content of three different blood reference materials from the Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) of the European Commission (BCR-194, BCR-195, BCR-196). Cadmium concentrations ranged between ~0.2 ng g-1 and ~12 ng g-1. Applying this procedure reference values, traceable to the SI, were obtained for the natural water sample of IMEP-9. For each of the certified amount contents presented here a total uncertainty budget was calculated using the method of propagation of uncertainties according to ISO and EURACHEM guidelines. The measurement procedures, as well as the uncertainty calculations are described for all seven elements mentioned above. In order to keep the whole certification process transparent and so traceable, the preparations of various reagents and materials as well as the sample treatment and blending, the measurements themselves, and finally the data treatment are described in detail. Explanations focus on Pb as a representative example. The total uncertainties (relative) obtained were less than 2% for all investigated elements at amount contents in the pmol/kg up to the high 7mol/kg range, corresponding to low 7g/kg and mg/kg levels. Cd and Pb were measured with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry and Cr with positive thermal ionization-mass spectrometry. The decomposition of the polymer matrix was carried out using a high pressure asher. Reference values for amount content, traceable to the SI-system, have been obtained for these three elements in both of the polyethylene samples of PERM. For each of the certified amount content values an uncertainty budget was calculated using the method of propagation of uncertainties according to ISO and EURACHEM guidelines. The measurement procedures, as well as the uncertainty calculations, are described for all three elements. In order to keep the whole certification process as transparent as possible, the preparations of various reagents and materials as well as the sample treatment and blending are described in detail. T1 - Comparative performance study of ICP mass spectrometers by means of U "isotopic measurements" N2 - The performance of four commercially available ICPMS instruments of three different types was compared by means of uranium "isotopic measurements". Examined were two quadrupole sector (different generation, different manufacturer), one single detector double focusing magnetic sector and one multiple collector double focusing magnetic sector instruments. The same samples of the IRMM-072 series were used under routine conditions to measure the 233U/235U and the 233U/238U ratios which, in these samples, vary over almost three orders of magnitude from ~ 1 to ~ 2 · 10-3. Within expanded (k = 2) uncertainties, good agreement was observed between the certified values and the data internally corrected for mass-discrimination effects. The magnitude of the evaluated uncertainties was different for each type of instrument. With the multiple collector instrument, expanded uncertainties varied from - 0.04% to- 0.24% for the 233U/235U ratio, and from - 0.08% to - 0.27% for the 233U/238U ratio. They were ~ 1 to 5 times larger with the single detector magnetic sector instrument, and ~ 10 to 25 times larger with both quadrupole sector instruments. With the multiple collector instrument, repeatability of the measurements seemed to be limited by the difficulty of correcting properly for instrumental background, whereas with the single detector magnetic sector instrument the counting statistics was the only limitation (on smallest ratios). Apparent mass-discrimination was clearly found to be larger but more reproducible (and hence easier to correct for) in the case of magnetic sector instruments than for both quadrupole sector instruments. If space charge effects were the main source of mass-discrimination for all instruments, these results are in contradiction with the hypothesis of the size of mass-discrimination decreasing with the acceleration voltage. With the single detector magnetic sector instrument in particular (when operated by changing the ion energy only), our results pointed at more than only one major source of mass-discrimination, with variable size depending on the ratios measured. The surface density of the implanted Sb layer was determined by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS), instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA), and inductively coupled plasma isotope dilution mass spectrometry (ICP-IDMS) equipped with a multi-collector. The isotopic abundances of Sb (121Sb and 123Sb) were determined by multi-collector ICP-MS and INAA. ICP-IDMS measurements are discussed in detail in this paper. All methods produced values traceable to the SI and are accompanied by a complete uncertainty budget. The homogeneity of the material was measured with RBS. From these measurements the standard uncertainty due to possible inhomogeneities was estimated to be less than 0.78% for fractions of the area increments down to 0.75 mm2 in size. Excellent agreement between the results of the three different methods was found. For the surface density of implanted Sb atoms the unweighted mean value of the means of four data sets is 4.8121016 cm-2 with an expanded uncertainty (coverage factor k=2) of 0.0921016 cm-2. For the isotope amount ratio R (121Sb/123Sb) the unweighted mean value of the means of two data sets is 1.435 with an expanded uncertainty (coverage factor k=2) of 0.006. With this enhanced procedure SI-traceable sulfur mass fractions below 10 mg kg-1 can be obtained. The achieved detection limit is approximately 0.2 mg kg-1. The procedure was validated by certified reference materials. The procedure was already applied to candidate reference materials and to samples analysed within projects of the “Comité Consultatif pour la Quantité de Matière – CCQM”. Additionally the influence of the isotopic composition on the results and its corresponding uncertainty was studied. Reference data published in the literature on the isotopic composition of sulfur were assessed. Nominal values have been set by Karl Fischer titration and gravimetry. The decomposition during the drying process of samples containing organic compounds was checked by thermogravimetry coupled with Fourier transform infrared spectrometric and mass spectrometric detection. Summarizing all measurement results, the commercial moisture analyzer demonstrated an average bias for the determination of water contents, which is much smaller than the stated uncertainty and thus is negligible. Compared to the classical oven-drying method, the commercial moisture analyzer shows a smaller bias, more ease in handling and less time consumption per analysis. When validated by a reference procedure like Karl Fischer titration the commercial moisture analyzer is the method of choice for routine analysis. T1 - The isotope abundances and the atomic weight of cadmium by a metrological approach N2 - Gravimetric synthetic mixtures of seven enriched, purified cadmium isotope materials were used to determine the correction factors for mass fractionation (MC-TIMS) and mass discrimination (MC-ICP-MS). The isotope abundance ratios determined for various natural cadmium materials represents the isotope composition for natural cadmium materials. Correction of the isotope abundance ratios observed yielded isotope abundances of 106Cd 0.012450(8), 108Cd 0.008884(4), 110Cd 0.124846(16), 111Cd 0.127955(14), 112Cd 0.241110(38), 113Cd 0.122254(22), 114Cd 0.287439(60) and 116Cd 0.075183(32). The newly determined atomic weight of natural cadmium based on SI-traceable evaluation of the isotope abundance ratios is 112.41384(18). The cadmium material designated in the paper as Cd-2211 can be used as an isotope reference material with a δ(114Cd/110Cd)-value of 0‰. The results obtained show that the uncertainties for the isotope abundances and the atomic weight given as IUPAC values for cadmium are overestimated. Emphasis is placed on liquid and solid RMs and IDMS measurements of the highest analytical quality. Basic principles, as well as the equation system, are being revisited. Different calibration strategies, such as single, double or triple IDMS, are critically reviewed and the achievable uncertainties are discussed. Differences in the application of thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) are discussed as well as differences between different types of mass spectrometers, such as single collector versus multi-collector or quadrupole versus magnetic sector instruments. Possible sources of errors and bias are mentioned and correction models introduced and applied within the past years are discussed. Several examples for RM characterisations and inter-laboratory comparisons for elemental as well as elemental species analysis are shown, each demonstrating excellent analytical quality. In general, it can be stated that IDMS is the most important reference method for elemental and elemental species analysis, offering the highest accuracy and precision or smallest measurement uncertainties, when properly applied. Thus, IDMS represents by far the best suited reference method for RM characterisation. Owing to its universal applicability IDMS offers sufficient potential to follow future needs in analytical chemistry as well as in the RM sector. T1 - Production of three certified reference materials for the sulfur content in gasoline (petrol) N2 - Directive 2003/17/EC of the European Parliament and the European Council stipulates that petrol (gasoline) with a total sulfur content below 10 mg kg-1 must be available in all European Union member states by 2009. Three certified reference materials were produced in support of this directive in a joint effort of the members of the European Reference Materials Initiative (ERM). Two of the materials were made from commercial petrol, while the third one was prepared from a blend of commercial petrols. Relative between-ampule heterogeneity of the materials was quantified and found to be below 2.5%. Potential degradation during storage and dispatch was quantified, and shelf lives based on these values were set. The three materials were characterized by three institutes using different variants of isotope-dilution mass spectrometry. The results from the three institutes were combined, and the final uncertainties of the respective sulfur mass fractions were estimated including contributions from heterogeneity, stability, and characterization. In contrast to the huge analytical progress in isotope ratio analytics, the production of isotope reference materials has not kept pace with the increasing needs of isotope analysts. Three representative isotope systems are used to explain the technical and non-technical difficulties and drawbacks, on one hand, and to demonstrate what can be achieved at its best, on the other hand. A clear statement is given that new isotope reference materials are needed to obtain traceable and thus comparable data, which is essential for all kinds of isotope research. The range of available isotope reference materials and δ reference materials should be increased and matrix reference materials certified for isotope compositions or δ values, which do not exist yet, should be provided. A1 - Koenig, Maren A1 - Pritzkow, Wolfgang T1 - A modified lead-matrix separation procedure shown for lead isotope analysis in Trojan silver artefacts as an example N2 - A modified Pb–matrix separation procedure using NH4HCO3 solution as eluent has been developed and validated for determination of Pb isotope amount ratios by thermal ionization mass spectrometry. The procedure is based on chromatographic separation using the Pb·Spec resin and an in-house-prepared NH4HCO3 solution serving as eluent. The advantages of this eluent are low Pb blanks (<40 pgmL-1) and the property that NH4HCO3 can be easily removed by use of a heating step (>60 °C). Pb recovery is >95 % for water samples. For archaeological silver samples, however, the Pb recovery is reduced to approximately 50 %, but causes no bias in the determination of Pb isotope amount ratios. The validated procedure was used to determine lead isotope amount ratios in Trojan silver artefacts with expanded uncertainties (k=2) <0.09 %. Starting with some examples for isotope research the key requirements for metrologically valid procedures enabling traceable and comparable isotope data are discussed. Of course multi-collector mass spectrometers are required which offer sufficiently high isotope ratio precision for the intended research work. Following this, corrections for mass fractionation/discrimination, validation of the analytical procedure including chemical sample preparation and complete uncertainty budgets are the most important issues for obtaining a metrologically valid procedure for isotope ratio determination. Only the application of such metrologically valid procedures enables the generation of traceable and comparable isotope data. To realize this suitable isotope and/or δ-reference materials are required, which currently are not sufficiently available for most isotope systems. Boron is given as an example, for which the situation regarding isotope and δ-reference materials is excellent. Boron may therefore serve as prototype for other isotope systems.
