Xenobiotics are able to sorb to polymer materials, and this process is further enhanced where they Encounter microplastics (plastic fragments <5 mm). In this work we studied the sorption of metformin, a type-2 diabetes drug, and difenoconazole, a fungicide, onto the virgin polymer materials polyamide (PA), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS). Additionally, PP was cryo-milled and PA was treated with acid to investigate the influence of an increase in surface area and chemical modification. The material properties were also studied by dynamic scanning calorimetry (DSC), gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Sorption experiments were performed on the basis of a full factorial design examining the effect of agitation, pH value, and salinity. Experimental results showed that difenoconazole sorbs readily to all microplastics, whereas the more polar analyte metformin did not show any affinity to the materials used. For difenoconazole the governing factor in all cases is agitation, while both pH and salinity exhibited only a slight influence. The modification of polymers leads to enhanced sorption, indicating that an increase in surface area (cryo-milled PP) or inner volume (acid-treated PA) strongly favours adsorption. Moreover, long-term experiments demonstrated that the time until equilibrium is reached depends strongly on the particle size. Es wurde gezeigt, wie die Wirksamkeit von Rotem Phosphor in HIPS and PBT durch Kombination mit anderen Flammschutzmitteln zu verbessern ist. N2 - Polymers are flammable due to their chemical nature. As a consequence they must be treated with flame-retardants before they can be used in fields with high flammability risks, such as transport, electronic devices and building construction. The use of red phosphorus as a fire retardant has been encouraged because it is an environmentally friendly alternative to halogenated compounds. The intention of this thesis was to evaluate the potential of red phosphorus as a flame retardant and to determine its fire-retardant mechanisms in different thermoplastics. The thermal decomposition and combustion behaviour of HIPS, PBT and PA66 containing red phosphorus was studied. It further investigated how the activity and efficiency of red phosphorus in HIPS and PBT was influenced by additional flame retardants such as melamine polyphosphate, melamine cyanurate and magnesium hydroxide. The decomposition process was characterized by means of different thermogravimetric methods (TG-FTIR, TG-MS), and the combustion behaviour by cone calorimeter measurements at various external heat fluxes. The flammability was investigated with LOI and the residue of combustion was analysed by means of XPS. Based on these results models for decomposition process were postulated. Red phosphorus can act both by promoting char formation in the condensed phase, and through radical trapping in the gas phase. Red phosphorus acts in the condensed phase in PA66, and in the gas phase in HIPS. In PBT both mechanisms were observed, depending on the pH value. When red phosphorus is combined with fuel-dilution additives such as melamine species in HIPS and PBT, both flame retardants act independently. The combustion behaviour of the combined material can be described by superposition of the distinct flame-retarded materials. In the presence of a barrier former, such as magnesium hydroxide in HIPS, the gas-phase mechanism of red phosphorus remains unaffected; however, a slight anti-synergism results. This is based on formation of a magnesium phosphate barrier, which influences the efficiency of phosphorus as a radical trap. The results showed that the activity of phosphorus as a flame retardant in thermoplastics depends on the water content of the polymer, the pH value and the presence of functional groups in the polymer. The efficiency of phosphorus as a flame retardant in the condensed and gas phases depends on combustion conditions. The fire behavior is studied by cone calorimetric measurements. Additional thermogravimetry is used for further investigations. The fire tests show that EG has the highest potential for flame retardancy, but due to its expansion it cracks the formed residue layer. Fire behavior was studied using a cone calorimeter and flammability was tested with UL 94 and the limiting oxygen index. AlPi works as an effective flame retardant for glass fiber reinforced PA 6T/DT materials, acting in the gas phase. Therefore, the respective effects of geometry, material composition, and moisture were studied by performing cone calorimetric measurements. Using hollow-shaped geometries removes combustible material and reduces the fire load but simultaneously increases fire propagation. The best results were achieved by using high-wood contents. The addition of talc can reduce the intensity of burning. Moisture also has a positive effect on burning behavior. Apart from the well-known mechanism of water, a change was observed in the resultant residue. Whereas these traces were soon identified as discoloured silver contacts along the cell edges or at micro cracks, the chemical and mechanistic reasons for this phenomenon have not yet been resolved in detail. In this work we show that silver nanoparticles accumulating within the encapsulation foil cause the brownish discolouration, and that certain additives of encapsulation and back sheet foils trigger the formation of these nanoparticles. Poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) (PEtOx) for surface modification of nanoparticles is applied and both protein adsorption and cellular uptake of PEtOxylated nanoparticles versus nanoparticles coated with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and non-coated positively and negatively charged nanoparticles are compared. Therefore, fluorescent poly(organosiloxane) nanoparticles of 15 nm radius are synthesized, which are used as a scaffold for surface modification in a grafting onto approach. With multi-angle dynamic light scattering, asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation, gel electrophoresis, and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, it is demonstrated that protein adsorption on PEtOxylated nanoparticles is extremely low, similar as on PEGylated nanoparticles. Moreover, quantitative microscopy reveals that PEtOxylation significantly reduces the non-specific cellular uptake, particularly by macrophage-like cells. Collectively, studies demonstrate that PEtOx is a very effective alternative to PEG for stealth modification of the surface of nanoparticles. T1 - Polyurethane versus silicone catheters for central venous port devices implanted at the forearm N2 - Purpose: We aimed to analyse short and long-term complications of polyurethane (PU) versus silicone catheters used in totally implantable venous-access ports (TIVAPs) implanted at the forearm. Methods: Retrospective analysis of 698 consecutively implanted TIVAPs was performed. Primary end-points were defined as rates of major complications associated with either type of central venous port catheter. Technical success rate, device service interval as well as minor complications not requiring port explantation were defined as secondary end-points. Results: A total of 698 port devices were implanted in 681 patients, 396 equipped with a PU catheter, 302 with a silicone catheter. The technical success rate was 99.9% with no major periprocedural complications. During follow-up a total of 211 complications in 146 patients were observed (1.0/1000 catheter days), 183 occurred associated with PU catheters (1.8/100 catheter days), 28 (0.3/1000 catheter days) with silicone catheters (log rank test p < 0.0001). Catheter-related bloodstream infections as well as thrombotic complications occurred significantly more frequently with PU catheters, while silicone catheters exhibited a trend towards a higher rate of mechanical failure such as disconnection or catheter rupture. Major complications requiring explantation of the device occurred more frequently with PU-based catheters (10.6%) compared to silicone catheter carrying ports (4.6%, log rank test p < 0.001). To characterize their aging behavior laser-induced photoluminescence spectroscopy was applied. Additionally, aging characterization was performed by established methods such as tensile testing, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and UV–VIS spectroscopy. During the initial stages of aging, the overall concentration of phenolic antioxidants as well as oxidation onset temperatures decreased exponentially. Simultaneously, significant discoloration due to the formation of conjugated degradation products from phenolic antioxidants (e.g., quinone methides) was detected. After the consumption of antioxidants, photoluminescence started to grow continuously presumably due to the formation of photoluminescent unsaturated carbonyls. In the final stages of aging, embrittlement of the materials as characterized by the degradation of mechanical properties (i.e., loss in ductility) coincided with rising carbonyl index values as well as an increase in crystallinity due to chemicrystallization. Between integrated photoluminescence intensity and carbonyl index, a linear correlation was established. In the induction period, the photoluminescence method exhibited a significantly higher sensitivity to reflect aging induced material changes. The investigation was performed in situ, using a thin film of the epoxy mixture on a silicon wafer substrate in a heatable transmission tool of a FTIR spectrometer. Based on these model-curing experiments, a major curing mechanism was proposed, taking into account the appearance, the decrease, and the development of characteristic bands at various temperatures. The conclusions of the model curing were correlated to FTIR measurements on a real, 50-mm-thick glass fiber reinforced component composite part from a technical process. It could be shown that characteristic bands that develop at curing temperatures above 150°C appear especially in the center of the thick sample. From the chemical or molecular point of view, this demonstrates the established technician's understanding that temperature control inside a large-scale fiber composite of, for example, aircraft, wind-turbine, automotive applications component is of major importance. T1 - Polymer foil additives trigger the formation of snail trails in photovoltaic modules N2 - After several months of operation, many photovoltaic (PV) modules develop a discolouration defect called snail trails which appear as irregular dark traces across the cells. These traces are caused by silver nanoparticles accumulating within the encapsulation foil directly above the grid finger. In this work we systematically investigate combinations of encapsulation and back-sheet foils with respect to their susceptibility for snail trails. We can show that certain additive compositions within the encapsulation and back sheet foils are critical for the formation of the discolouring silver nanoparticles. We suggest a reaction model explaining the formation of snail trails from a chemical point of view. This fundamental understanding allows the rapid testing of foils for their snail trail sensitivity as well as the special design of resistant foils. The aging of polypropylene, in this case syringe material, was accelerated under different conditions. The samples were aged at 75°, 80° and 85 °C under pure oxygen and at 75 °C under ultrapure water. Further samples treated with 15 kGy (e-beam) were aged at 75 °C under pure oxygen. All experiments were carried out at an oxygen partial pressure of 50 bar. The different courses of aging were evaluated and compared. Color and transparency were used to assess the visual changes; weight, geometry and tensile test for the changes in technical properties; and DSC, FTIR and TDS-GC-MS to improve our physico-chemical understanding of the aging processes. The investigations showed that all factors tested influence oxidation/aging behaviour. Dry or wet exposure has no effect on aging during the induction time. However, after the point of maximum service time the degradation process of polymer changes significantly in the presence of water. The increase of aging temperature decreases the maximum service time; however a temperature higher than 80 °C changes the relative ratio of surface and bulk oxidation. The pretreatment with irradiation decreases the maximum service time further, because the irradiation partly damages the antioxidant, and the mobility of antioxidant fragments inside the polymer changes. These diffusion effects influence the relative ratio of bulk and surface oxidation of the polymer sample. It was found that the additives influence the decomposition process of the polymer in the condensed phase, resulting in a decrease in styrene monomer formation and an increase in styrene oligmer derivatives. Via reference measurements with binary mixtures it was found that the presence of sulphur additives influences the radicalic decomposition process of PS. In combination with quantum chemical calculations it was concluded that this is due to the formation of radicals that abstract hydrogen from the polymer matrix at lower temperatures, disfavouring the radicalic decomposition pathway leading to styrene. T1 - The memory effect in polyolefinic products: A tool for confirming the steam sterilization process N2 - DSC-Messungen von dampfsterilisierten medizinischen Produkten aus Polyolefinen zeigen beim ersten Heizvorgang als auffällige Besonderheit eine zusätzliche Stufe, bekannt als Temperpeak. Das Ziel dieser Untersuchungen ist, dieses Phänomen nachzuvollziehen und zu verstehen, um es als Nachweis für die Dampfsterilisation nutzen zu können. Dafür wurden PP- und PE-Proben unter verschiedenen Bedingungen dampfsterilisiert und im Ofen thermisch behandelt. Anschließend wurden die Proben mittels DSC untersucht und die Einflüsse der thermischen Behandlung und der mechanischen Beanspruchung analysiert. Um den Einfluss unterschiedlicher Materialspezifikationen zu prüfen, wurden zusätzlich verschiedene Referenzmaterialien (PE und PP) untersucht und GPC-Messungen durchgeführt. Des Weiteren wurde die Beständigkeit des Signals gegenüber der Zeit und der Temperatureinflüssen betrachtet. Die Untersuchungen zeigen, dass sich ein stabiler Memory-Effekt erzeugen lässt. This work gives an overview of the occurrence and first known effects of microplastics in the environment. Furthermore, current scientific proceedings are considered and pending issues are discussed. Seit Anfang der 1970er-Jahre wird das Vorkommen von Kunststoffpartikeln in Küstengewässern beschrieben. Inzwischen ist Mikroplastik nicht nur im marinen Bereich, sondern auch in weiteren Umweltkompartimenten, Biota und technischen Einrichtungen der Wasserwirtschaft nachgewiesen worden, in dieser Arbeit wird ein Überblick über das Vorkommen von Mikroplastik in der aquatischen Umwelt und ersten bekannten Auswirkungen gegeben. Therefore a method is needed to identify and quantify microplastics in various environmental samples to generate reliable concentration values. Such concentration values, i.e. quantitative results, are necessary for an assessment of microplastic in environmental media. This was achieved by thermal extraction in thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), connected to a solid-phase adsorber. These adsorbers were subsequently analysed by thermal desorption gas chromatography mass spectrometry (TDS-GC-MS). In comparison to other chromatographic methods, like pyrolyse gas chromatography mass spectrometry (Py-GC-MS), the relatively high sample masses in TGA (about 200 times higher than used in Py-GC-MS) analysed here enable the measurement of complex matrices that are not homogenous on a small scale. Through the characteristic decomposition products known for every kind of polymer it is possible to identify and even to quantify polymer particles in various matrices. T1 - Thermal extraction combined with thermal desorption: A powerful tool to investigate the thermo-oxidative degradation of polyamide 66 materials N2 - Using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) with a solid-phase adsorber for thermal extraction, followed by subsequently analysing the adsorber with thermo-desorption gas chromatography mass spectrometry (TDS-GC–MS) enables measurement of polymer degradation under oxidizing atmosphere, and the identification of certain complex hydrocarbon degradation products by chromatographic separation and defined mass patterns. This technique, thermal-extraction desorption gas chromatography mass spectrometry (TED-GC–MS) was used to investigate the thermo-oxidative degradation of PA 66 and PA 66 doped with 2 wt% of metal oxide particles. In TGA pure PA 66 formed more residue under an oxidizing atmosphere than an inert one. In contrast to the measurements under inert atmosphere, several condensed aromatic species containing nitrogen could be identified in thermo-oxidative measurements. These degradation products were formed through condensation reactions of primary amides originating from imide hydrolysis. The formation of such highly condensed species also causes higher char formation. Four metal oxides have shown an impact on the thermo-oxidative degradation of PA 66: Fe2O3 on η-Al2O3 < pure Fe2O3 = Fe2O3 on γ-Al2O3 < pure ZnO. For ZnO even a char-stabilizing effect could be observed. A catalytic effect of these metal oxides causes more condensed cyclopentanone and pyridine derivates. Thus, more water is formed and released, resulting in increased hydrolysis of the imides and degradation at lower temperatures. T1 - Polyglycerol coated polypropylene surfaces for protein and bacteria resistance N2 - Polyglycerol (PG) coated polypropylene (PP) films were synthesized in a two-step approach that involved plasma bromination and subsequently grafting hyperbranched polyglycerols with very few amino functionalities. The influence of different molecular weights and density of reactive linkers were investigated for the grafted PGs. Longer bromination times and higher amounts of linkers on the surface afforded long-term stability. The protein adsorption and bacteria attachment of the PP-PG films were studied. Their extremely low amine content proved to be beneficial for preventing bacteria attachment.
