The substrates selected and tested in the present paper were conductive, fluorine‐doped tin oxide (FTO) glass, nonconductive silica glass, and titanium alloy. The current study focusses on the analytical control of the stepwise functionalization of the substrates with 3‐aminopropyltriethoxysilane and glutaraldehyde (GA) for both the FTO glass and silica glass and with 3‐aminepropyl phosphonic acid and GA for Ti alloy. The analyses have been conducted by means of surface sensitive methods, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy, and time‐of‐flight secondary ions mass spectrometry. Chemical composition of surface of functionalized substrates shows differences in the degree and type of modification in dependence on substrate. It could be demonstrated that the best functionalized substrates were the conductive FTO glasses. The analysis of the functionalized Ti substrates has revealed that the surface coverage with 3‐aminepropyl phosphonic acid and GA molecules is an inhomogeneous one, and further optimization of the two‐step functionalization on the Ti alloy substrate is necessary. The influence of the load type on CF behavior of the alloy was examined by applying push/pull and rotating bending cyclic load to failure. The hour-glass shaped specimens with both polished and precisely turned surface finish were tested in corrosion chambers allowing for the permanent circulation of Northern German Basin electrolyte heated to 369 K. Additionally, the influence of a protective cathodic potential on the CF life expectancy was investigated by employing a potentiostat. The rotating bending cyclic load led to a higher CF life expectancy, which decreased with increasing duration of the experiment due to a higher deterioration rate of the material. The application of a cathodic potential caused a significant increase of the CF lifespan from 4.7 x 105 (open-circuit potential (OCP)) to 107 cycles (preset threshold cycle number) for the potential range from USHE = – 450 to – 900 mV. Microstructural analysis of the CF damage revealed horizontal grain attack within corrosion pit cavities, multiple fatigue cracks and preferable deterioration of the austenitic phase. T1 - First in-situ electrochemical measurement during fatigue testing of injection pipe steels to determine the reliability of a saline aquifer water CCS-site in the Northern German basin N2 - During carbon dioxide storage technology (carbon capture and storage, CCS) components are exposed to a corrosive environment and mechanical stress, which results in corrosion fatigue and inevitably followed by the a lifetime reduction of these components. In order to gain knowledge upon the corrosion fatigue strength of materials, Samples of high alloyed stainless injection-pipe steels AISI 420 X46Cr13, and X5CrNiCuNb16-4 AISI 630 were tested in a at T=60 °C and ambient pressure in a CO2-saturated synthetic aquifer environment similar to possible geological on-shore CCS-sites in the northern German Basin. Therefore a corrosion chamber applied to a resonant testing machine allowing for “in situ” test conditions was designed and successfully tested. In-situ tension compression experiments were established using a resonant testing machine at a frequency as low as 30 – 40 Hz. In addition technical CO2 was introduced into the closed system at a rate close to 9 L/h to keep stable environmental conditions. Simultaneously electrochemical testing was performed to get information on failure causes and the mechanism of failure during the injection of CO2 into deep geological layers. S-N plots, micrographic analysis, and surface analysis of the fracture surface were applied to obtain sustainable information on the corrosion fatigue behavior of injection pipe steels. Samples used have a surface roughness of Rz = 4, to simulate technically machined surfaces. X46Cr13 reached the maximum number of cycles (12.5 x 106) at a stress amplitude of 173 MPa. X5CrNiCuNb16-4 reached the maximum number of cycles (10 x 106) at a stress amplitude at 150 MPa. The scatter range of X5CrNiCuNb16-4 is very high (1:34); by comparison the scatter range of X46Cr13 is only 1:3.5. Despite their ecological significance, only a handful of reference-quality termite genomes have been sequenced, which is insufficient to unravel the genetic mechanisms that have contributed to their ecological success. Here, we perform sequencing and hybrid assembly of 45 taxonomically and ecologically diverse termites and two cockroaches, resulting in haplotype-merged genome assemblies of 47 species, 22 of which were near-chromosome level. Next, we examine the link between termite dietary evolution and major genomic events. We find that Termitidae, which include ~80% of described termite species, have larger genomes with more genes and a higher proportion of transposons than other termites. Our analyses identify a gene number expansion early in the evolution of Termitidae, including an expansion of the repertoire of CAZymes, the genes involved in lignocellulose degradation. Notably, this expansion of genomes and gene repertoires coincided with the origin of soil-feeding in Termitidae and remained unchanged in lineages that secondarily reverted to a wood-based diet. Overall, our sequencing effort multiplies the number of available termite genomes by six and provides insights into the genome evolution of an ancient lineage of social insects. Other genomic elements, such as transposable elements (TEs), make up a large fraction of eukaryotic genomes but are ignored for phylogenetic reconstruction, despite potentially containing phylogenetic information, which could be used to resolve nodes that remain contentious. Here, we reconstructed accurate phylogenetic trees of 45 termites and two cockroaches using two types of characters derived from the TE landscape: (1) genome-wide presence and absence of 37,966 TE families and (2) presence/absence data of 37,966 TE families in the flanking regions of orthologous ultraconserved elements (UCEs), which was a proxy for TE insertions. The topologies of our TE-based phylogenetic trees were largely congruent with phylogenetic trees inferred from alignments of UCEs and single-copy orthologous genes, only differing for a few nodes variably reconstructed in other phylogenetic analyses. Notably, trees based on genome-wide TE family composition were more accurate than trees inferred from mitochondrial genome alignments, and trees based on TE family composition in regions flanking UCEs achieved comparable accuracy with trees inferred from single-copy orthologous gene alignments. Our results demonstrate that the TE landscape is phylogenetically informative, representing an additional set of markers for robust phylogenetic reconstructions, with potential use to resolve ambiguous nodes in the tree of life. T1 - Friction and endurance of MoS2/ta-C coatings produced by laser arc deposition N2 - The tribological behaviour of MoS2/ta-C double layer coatings deposited by Laser-Arc technology was investigated in vacuum and air. In vacuum environment, the friction coefficient against steel balls varies between 0.005 and 0.02 depending on the contact pressure. At high contact pressures, the friction coefficient is as low as 0.005 and the life time between 340,000 and 500,000 cycles. Furthermore, it is shown that a ta-C base layer improves the performance of MoS2 coating. Surface analyses were performed before and after the tribological tests by means of SEM, EDX, XRD, and TEM. They show that in the top layer beneath the sliding surface crystallization of the initially quasi-amorphous MoS2 took place. TEM images also verified an orientation of the basal MoS2-lattice planes parallel to the surface. We present here the first example of a plastically flexible one-dimensional (1D) coordination polymer. The compound [Zn(m-Cl)2(3,5-dichloropyridine)2]n is flexible over two crystallographic faces. Remarkably, the single crystal remains intact when bent to 1808. A combination of microscopy, diffraction, and spectroscopic studies have been used to probe the structural response of the crystal lattice to mechanical bending. Deformation of the covalent polymer chains does not appear to be responsible for the observed macroscopic bending. Instead, our results suggest that mechanical bending occurs by displacement of the coordination polymer chains. Based on experimental and theoretical evidence, we propose a new model for mechanical flexibility in 1D coordination polymers. The resulting surface integrity, particularly the near-surface residual stress state, plays a crucial role in component performance and fatigue life. This study investigates the potential of ultrasonic-assisted milling (USAM), a hybrid machining process, to improve surface integrity and machinability compared to conventional milling (CM). Three materials were investigated, two difficult-to-cut materials CoCr26Ni9Mo5W and FeNi36 and a low-alloy steel S355J2C. The CoCr26Ni9Mo5W and FeNi36 were additively manufactured via Directed Energy Deposition (DED)-Arc and then machined with varying cutting speeds and feed rates within a Design of Experiments. USAM exhibited enhanced machinability and surface integrity, particularly at low cutting speeds, by reducing cutting forces up to 40% and shifting near-surface residual stresses from tensile to compressive. For S355J2C, USAM reduced cutting forces by approximately 45% and induced near-surface compressive residual stresses up to approximately −700 MPa. Rotating bending tests (DIN50100) show that USAM increases the technical fatigue limit from 307 MPa (CM) to 341 MPa (USAM), i.e., by ∼11%. These findings highlight the advantages of ultrasonic assistance in post-AM machining, offering enhanced fatigue performance and surface quality for various metallic materials. Residual stresses and distortion are of central importance when characterizing the manufactured components and the sensitive transition area between additive manufactured (AM) component and semifinished product. Residual stresses caused by the thermal cycles during the manufacturing process can impair the mechanical properties of the manufactured parts and can lead to component failure, especially for high-strength steels. Therefore, understanding and controlling residual stresses, when combining different base and feedstock materials, is critical to improve the quality and efficiency of the hybrid DED-Arc process. This article deals with the influence of the build-up height on the residual stress distribution of additively manufactured components with a selected base and feedstock material from commercial high-strength steels. Using a robot-assisted DED-system and a controlled short arc, AM welding experiments were carried out with close to the application parameters at working temperature (200 °C) and heat input (650 kJ/m). Five hybrid AM specimens (AM wall on upright structural steel plate) were produced using a one bead per layer strategy and selected AM-wall heights between 15 and 300 mm. The influence of the AM build height on the longitudinal residual stress in the whole hybrid AM specimen (in welding direction) was analyzed and discussed. All experiments exhibit comparable stress distributions in the area of the substrate plate up to the heat-affected zone (HAZ) and the transition zone, regardless of the building height. The height significantly influences the residual stress distribution of the deposited AM-component. Tensile residual stresses with a maximum range between 300and 400 MPa were always found in the last approx. 18 component layers (upper 40 mm). This is due to restraint of the shrinking of the top layers by the layers below. The lower layers show homogeneous residual stress distributions characterized by low compressive stresses due to the process-related tempering during the deposition of each layer on top of each other. As a result, the significant difference between the various AM build-up heights of the hybrid AM specimens is the extent (or height) of this tempered zone with low compressive stresses. These correlations contribute to the understanding of residual stress development with increasing structure height or ratio of component heights of substrate semi-finished product and AM component in hybrid additive manufacturing. By supplying powders to a pin-on-disc test it has been shown that neither silica, nor hematite, nor a mixture of both provide the low coefficient of friction (COF) observed for the hybrid composite. Only if graphite was blended with the oxides, the low COF was obtained. Thus, a film of finely dispersed stable inorganic wear products containing 15 vol% graphite provides low friction and wear in the considered case. Synthetic functional multilayers of molecules cooperating in a coupled manner can be fabricated on surfaces through layer-by-layer self-assembly. Ordered arrays of stimulus-responsive rotaxanes undergoing well-controlled axle shuttling are excellent candidates for coupled mechanical motion. Such stimulus-responsive surfaces may help integrate synthetic molecular machines in larger systems exhibiting even macroscopic effects or generating mechanical work from chemical energy through cooperative action. The present work demonstrates the successful deposition of ordered mono- and multilayers of chemically switchable rotaxanes on gold surfaces. Rotaxane mono- and multilayers are shown to reversibly switch in a coupled manner between two ordered states as revealed by linear dichroism effects in angle-resolved NEXAFS spectra. Such a concerted switching process is observed only when the surfaces are well packed, while less densely packed surfaces lacking lateral order do not exhibit such effects. Pure magnetite powder provided a value of CoF of 0.4. Magnetite-copper mixtures tested at 400 °C revealed lower CoF values (~0.4) than those at room temperature (~0.6). Magnetite-graphite and magnetite-graphite-copper mixtures presented lower CoF values (~0.3). All systems formed a magnetite-based tribofilm and patches of metallic copper were found on the tribosurfaces of the mixtures containing copper. Carbon layers and graphite nanoinclusions were observed in the graphite mixtures. The incorporation of zirconia particles, a by-product of ball milling mixing, prevented the selective transfer of graphite and copper to the tribosurfaces of some of the samples. T1 - Ultra-thin SiO2 on Si IX: absolute measurements of the amount of silicon oxide as a thickness of SiO2 on Si N2 - Results from a study conducted between National Metrology Institutes (NMIs) for the measurements of the absolute thicknesses of ultra-thin layers of SiO2 on Si are reported. These results are from a key comparison and associated pilot study under the auspices of the Consultative Committee for Amount of Substance. ´Amount of substance´ may be expressed in many ways, and here the measurand is the thickness of the silicon oxide layers with nominal thicknesses in the range 1.5-8 nm on Si substrates, expressed as the thickness of SiO2. Separate samples were provided to each institute in containers that limited the carbonaceous contamination to approximately < 0.3 nm. The SiO2 samples were of ultra-thin on (100) and (111) orientated wafers of Si. The measurements from the laboratories which participated in the study were conducted using ellipsometry, neutron reflectivity, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy or X-ray reflectivity, guided by the protocol developed in an earlier pilot study. A very minor correction was made in the different samples that each laboratory received. Where appropriate, method offset values attributed to the effects of contaminations, from the earlier pilot study, were subtracted. Values for the key comparison reference values (agreed best values from a Consultative Committee study) and their associated uncertainties for these samples are then made from the weighted means and the expanded weighted standard deviations of the means of these data. These results show a dramatic improvement on previous comparisons, leading to 95% uncertainties in the range 0.09-0.27 nm, equivalent to 0.4-1.0 monolayers over the 1.5-8.0 nm nominal thickness range studied. If the sample-to-sample uncertainty is reduced from its maximum estimate to the most likely value, these uncertainties reduce to 0.05-0.25 nm or ~1.4% relative standard uncertainties. The best results achieve ~1% relative standard uncertainty. It is concluded that XPS has now been made fully traceable to the SI, for ultra-thin thermal SiO2 on Si layers, by calibration using wavelength methods in an approach that may be extended to other material systems. The sensor is able to detect hydrogen in a concentration range from below one ppm to the lower flammable limit in air which is 4 vol.-%. The chip operates at room temperature which results in an extremely low energy consumption compared to other hydrogen sensors. Only once per day a short heating pulse is necessary to reactivate the sensor chip. In cooperation with the BAM, a long-term experiment was carried out. The duration of the measurement was about three months, with a hydrogen exposure every two weeks. The sensor signal remained stable over the measured period.
