Evolution of novel glass and ceramic processing routes, a plethora of new compositions, and unique exotic nano- and microstructures over the past 60 years led us to review the Definition of glass-ceramics. Well-established and emerging processing methods, such as co-firing, additive manufacturing, and laser patterning are analyzed concerning the core requirements of processing glass-ceramics and the Performance of the final products. In this communication, we propose a revised, updated definition of glass-ceramics, which reads “Glass-ceramics are inorganic, non-metallic materials prepared by controlled crystallization of glasses via different processing methods. They contain at least one type of functional crystalline phase and a residual glass. The volume fraction crystallized may vary from ppm to almost 100%”. T1 - The distribution of mycotoxins in a heterogeneous wheat field in relation to microclimate, fungal and bacterial abundance JF - Journal of Applied Microbiology N2 - Aim: To observe the variation in accumulation of Fusarium and Alternaria mycotoxins across a topographically heterogeneous field and tested biotic (fungal and bacterial abundance) and abiotic (microclimate) parameters as explanatory variables. Methods and Results: We selected a wheat field characterized by a diversified topography, to be responsible for variations in productivity and in canopy-driven microclimate. Fusarium and Alternaria mycotoxins where quantified in wheat ears at three sampling dates between flowering and harvest at 40 points. Tenuazonic acid (TeA), alternariol (AOH), alternariol monomethyl ether (AME), tentoxin (TEN), deoxynivalenol (DON), zearalenone (ZEN) and deoxynivalenol-3-Glucoside (DON.3G) were quantified. In canopy temperature, air and soil humidity were recorded for each point with data-loggers. Fusarium spp. as trichothecene producers, Alternaria spp. and fungal abundances were assessed using qPCR. Pseudomonas fluorescens bacteria were quantified with a culture based method. We only found DON, DON.3G, TeA and TEN to be ubiquitous across the whole field, while AME, AOH and ZEN were only occasionally detected. Fusarium was more abundant in spots with high soil humidity, while Alternaria in warmer and drier spots. Mycotoxins correlated differently to the observed explanatory variables: positive correlations between DON accumulation, tri 5 gene and Fusarium abundance were clearly detected. The correlations among the others observed variables, such as microclimatic conditions, varied among the sampling dates. The results of statistical model identification do not exclude that species coexistence could influence mycotoxin production. Conclusions: Fusarium and Alternaria mycotoxins accumulation varies heavily across the field and the sampling dates, providing the realism of landscapescale studies. Mycotoxin concentrations appear to be partially explained by biotic and abiotic variables. Significance and Impact of the Study: We provide a useful experimental design and useful data for understanding the dynamics of mycotoxin biosynthesis in wheat. T1 - Critical review of the current status of thickness measurements for ultrathin SiO2 on Si - Part V: Results of a CCQM pilot study JF - Surface and interface analysis N2 - Results are reported from a pilot study under the Consultative Committee for Amount of Substance (CCQM) to compare measurements of and resolve any relevant measurement issues in, the amount of thermal SiO2 oxide on (100) and (111) orientation Si wafer substrates in the thickness range 1.5 - 8 nm. As a result of the invitation to participate in this activity, 45 sets of measurements have been made in different laboratories using 10 analytical methods: medium-energy ion scattering spectrometry (MEIS), nuclear reaction analysis (NRA), RBS, elastic backscattering spectrometry (EBS), XPS, SIMS, ellipsometry, grazing-incidence x-ray reflectrometry (GIXRR), neutron reflectometry and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The measurements are made on separate sets of 10 carefully prepared samples, all of which have been characterised by a combination of ellipsometry and XPS using carefully established reference conditions and reference parameters. The results have been assessed against the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) data and all show excellent linearity. The remaining data sets correlate with the NPL data with average root-mean-square scatters of 0.15 nm, half being better than 0.1 nm and a few at or better than 0.05 nm. Each set of data allows a relative scaling constant and a zero thickness offset to be determined. Each method has an inherent zero thickness offset between 0 nm and 1 nm and it is these offsets, measured here for the first time, that have caused many problems in the past. There are three basic classes of offset: water and carbonadeous contamination equivalent to ~1 nm as seen by ellipsometry; adsorbed oxygen mainly from water at an equivalent thickness of 0.5 nm as seen by MEIS, NRA, RBS and possibly GIXRR; and no offset as seen by XPS using the Si 2p peaks. Each technique has a different uncertainty for the scaling constant and consistent results have been achieved. X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy has large uncertainties for the scaling constant but a high precision and, critically, if used correctly, has zero offset. Thus, a combination of XPS and the other methods allows the XPS scaling constant to be determined with low uncertainty, traceable via the other methods. XPS laboratories returning results early were invited to test a new reference procedure. All showed very significant improvements. The reference attenuation lengths thus need scaling by 0.986 ± 0.009 (at an expansion factor of 2) deduced from the data for the other methods. Several other methods have small offsets and, to the extent that these can be shown to be constant or measurable, then these methods will also show low uncertainty. Recommendations are provided for parameters for XPS, MEIS, RBS and NRA to improve their accuracy. The crystallization peak temperature (Tp) in Ar and 7% H2/Ar decreased with decreasing the particle size of glass powders, but the value of Tp in air was independent of particle size. The crystallized glass obtained by heating to Tp showed the formation of the α-Li3Fe2(PO4)3 and LiFePO4 crystalline phases. Fe2O3 crystals were formed only in the inside of crystallized glass plates in the heating in air. The crystallization of LiFePO4 was largely enhanced in the particle size of <2 µm during the heating in Ar and 7% H2/Ar atmospheres. The main crystallization mechanism in LFNP glass was found to be surface crystallization. Significant shrinkages were observed for glass compacts (pellets) in the heating in 7% H2/Ar. These results suggest that controlling particle sizes and atmospheres enables the design the morphology of LiFePO4 crystals in LFNP glass. Stock, T1 - The high-resolution synchrotron-based imaging stations at the BAMline (BESSY) and TopoTomo (ANKA) T2 - Developments in X-Ray Tomography VI (Proceedings of SPIE) N2 - The BAMline at the BESSY light source in Berlin and the TopoTomo beamline at the ANKA synchrotron facility in Karlsruhe (both Germany) operate in the hard X-ray regime (above 6 keV) with similiar photon flux density. For typical imaging applications, a double multilayer monochromator or a filtered white beam is used. In order to optimise the field of view and the resolution of the available indirect pixel detectors, different optical systems have been installed, adapted, respectively, to a large field of view (macroscope) and to high spatial resolution (microscope). They can be combined with different camera systems, ranging from 16-bit dynamic range slow-scan CCDs to fast CMOS cameras. The spatial resolution can be brought substantially beyond the micrometer limit by using a Bragg magnifier. The moderate flux of both beamlines compared to other 3rd generation light sources is compensated by a dedicated scintillator concept. For selected applications, X-ray beam collimation has proven to be a reliable approach to increase the available photon flux density. Absorption contrast, phase contrast, holotomography and refraction-enhanced imaging are used depending on the application. Additionally, at the TopoTomo beamline digital white beam synchrotron topography is performed, using the digital X-ray pixel detectors installed. Having chosen polypropylene (PP) as the material, which does not show sensitivity to moisture, the relevant weathering parameters of the dose–response functions could be limited to spectral irradiance and temperature. In artificial irradiation tests, for PP plates of varied stabiliser content, spectral sensitivity as well as temperature dependence of irradiation-caused crack formation was quantified. For that purpose, samples were exposed both to artificial weathering tests at various constant temperatures and to spectrally resolved irradiation. The temperature dependence could be modelled by an Arrhenius fit. For fitting the spectral sensitivity, a plateau function was chosen. Subsequently, the stabiliser content was parameterised and extrapolated. The formed dose–response functions were incorporated into a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software program, simulating the environment of a sample within a Phoenix-exposed IP/DP (Instrument Panel/Door Panel box) box, based on sun position and weather conditions, including radiation interactions. Observed local effects as well as the general ageing advance of PP hats are compared with respect to simulation and experiment. Resulting from this project, for this most simple example of PP of varied stabiliser content, the time to failure can be estimated for each weathering exposure environment with known time-resolved irradiance and temperature conditions. The formation of thermodynamically metastable phase, layered Na2MnP2O7, at the surface of the glass occurred. Heat treatment at 430 °C for 3 h lead to surface crystals of Na2MnP2O7 oriented with the (101) direction perpendicular to the sample surface. As the heat treatment temperature increased, the glass-ceramic samples deformed, and the presence numerous micro bubbles due to dissolved water was detected. T1 - Phase transformation induces plasticity with negligible damage in ceria-stabilized zirconia-based ceramics JF - Acta Materialia N2 - Ceramics and their composites are in general brittle materials because they are predominantly made up of ionic and covalent bonds that avoid dislocation motion at room temperature. However, a remarkable ductile behavior has been observed on newly developed 11 mol.% ceria-stabilized zirconia (11Ce-TZP) composite containing fine alumina (8 vol.% Al2O3) and elongated strontium hexa-aluminate (8 vol.% SrAl12O19) grains. The as-synthesized composite also has shown full resistance to Low Temperature Degradation (LTD), relatively high strength and exceptionally high Weibull modulus, allowing its use in a broader range of biomedical applications. In this study, to deepen the understanding of plastic deformation in Ce-TZP based composites that could soon be used for manufacturing dental implants, different mechanical tests were applied on the material, followed by complete microstructural characterization. Distinct from pure Ce-TZP material or other zirconia-based ceramics developed in the past, the material here studied can be permanently strained without affecting the Young modulus, indicating that the ductile response of tested samples cannot be associated to damage occurrence. This ductility is related to the stress-induced tetragonal to monoclinic (t-m) zirconia phase transformation, analogue to Transformation-Induced Plasticity (TRIP) steels, where retained austenite is transformed to martensite. The aim of this study is to corroborate if the observed plasticity can be associated exclusively to the zirconia t-m phase transformation, or also to microcraking induced by the transformation. The t-m transformed-zones produced after bending and biaxial tests were examined by X-ray refraction and SEM/TEM coupled with Raman. It was found that the self-powdering phenomenon appeared significantly during the crystallization at temperatures near the crystallization peak temperature, but the phenomenon is suppressed in the crystallization at temperatures much higher than the glass transition temperature. It was also found that the substitution of TeO2 for B2O3 in the base glasses suppresses the self-powdering phenomenon and consequently bulk crystallized glasses were obtained in the glass with x=8 mol%. The densities at room temperature of the base glasses are d =4.755–4.906 g/cm3, being much higher than the value of d=4.555 g/cm3 for β′-Gd2(MoO4)3 crystal. It is proposed that the stresses in the inside of crystals induced by large density differences (i.e., large molar volume differences) between the glassy phase and crystals might be relaxed effectively in the glasses containing TeO2 with weak TeeO bonds and fragile character. Impurities like wood, clay bricks or gypsum can lead to inferior building material properties. Harmful substances like heavy metals or organic pollutants should be minimised as well. Hence the non-concrete materials have to be separated from the concrete material stream. This can be done during the demolition process by using selective dismantling techniques. Alternatively a variety sorting and classifying techniques to purify the crushed concrete can be utilized. A research project, funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, investigated the possibilities of gaining recycled concrete aggregates of a high quality for the reuse in the production of concrete. The work focuses especially on how gypsum respectively sulphates in the crushed concrete can be reduced. Sulphates can impair the setting behaviour of concrete and also damage set concrete by causing expansion. Therefore the content of sulphates in RCA is restricted by guidelines and standards in Germany. Generally, gypsum in construction waste originates from interior fittings like gypsum walls, floor screeds, plaster boards and also plaster. Most of these materials can be reconstructed using selective dismantling techniques. This can be achieved either by manual labour or by using mechanical equipment e.g. to remove floor screeds by milling. Depending on the specific deconstruction site it can be more effective and/or more environmentally compatible to remove sulphates by treating the crushed concrete. Applicable treatments for sulphate reduction include dry processes like manual sorting of gypsum wall blocks as well as wet treatments e.g. jigging. Bei dieser Messmethode wird durch Einsatz eines Echtfarben- Konfokalmikroskops mit Immersionsobjektiv das empfindliche elektrochemische Rauschmessverfahren um eine bildgebende Messkomponente erweitert. Ziel dieser Untersuchung war es, diskrete Rauschmesssignale visuell detektierbaren Korrosionserscheinungen auf der Stahloberfläche nahezu in Echtzeit zuzuordnen. Auf Grund der notwendigen Anforderungen an einen in situ Messaufbau wurde im Rahmen dieser Untersuchung ein neuartiges selbstklebendes Folienelektrodensystem, bestehend aus Gegen- und Bezugselektrode, entwickelt, das für die in situ Messung zum Einsatz kam. Die in situ Untersuchungen wurden an dem austenitischen Chrom-Nickel-Stahl 1.4301 durchgeführt. Als Ergebnis der Experimente konnten Stromtransienten im nA- bis μA-Bereich messtechnisch erfasst werden und mikroskopisch kleinen Korrosionskeimen, die sowohl stabil wie auch metastabil auf der Stahloberfläche auftraten, diskret und zeitnah zugeordnet werden. Weiterhin konnten mit Hilfe der Konfokaltechnik die Volumina und die Mantelflächen der einzelnen Lochdefekte ermittelt werden, sodass durch Auswertung und Kombination der elektrochemischen und mikroskopischen Messergebnisse erstmalig die Korrosionsstromdichte bestimmt werden konnte, die bei der Initiierung der lokalen Lochkeime aufgetreten ist. Some of them can be determined in laboratory measurements but the human factor and a part of environment conditions and their interaction with the device need to be treated statistically. That is why the test & evaluation procedure described in CEN CWA 14747:2003, includes in addition to parameter tests of metal detectors also the reliability or blind field tests under local conditions with local personnel. A series of three big field trials had been accomplished in the ITEP-project 2.1.1.2 “Reliability Model for Test & Evaluation of Metal Detectors” to specify the optimum conditions for reliable trial results with affordable effort. For each set of specific working conditions, characterized in terms of a combination of one mine type in one soil with one detector handled by local personnel, the searching system will show up a working performance in mine detection rates as a function of mine depth and show up a certain overall false call rate. During the ITEP-trials in Benkovac and Oberjettenberg the authors learnt to determine this function separately for each mine type in each soil, which is especially important for low metal mines in uncooperative soil which will be illustrated for the mine PMA2 in different types of soil. The question of representativeness for field conditions on the one hand and necessary statistical set up for the possibility to distinguish between individual detector performances is still under discussion. Dabei steht der Sulfatgehalt im Eluat von Bauschutt besonders im Fokus. In der vorliegenden Studie wird untersucht, wie durch die Optimierung von Abbrucharbeiten und Bauschuttaufbereitung hochwertige Gesteinskörnungen aus Altbeton gewonnen werden können. Anhand von Literatur- und Datenrecherchen werden zunächst Sulfatquellen in Gebäuden sowie verfügbare Abbruch- und Aufbereitungstechniken zusammengestellt. An important requirement for recycling on a high level, like the reuse of crushed concrete as recycled concrete aggregate, is the observation of limits for hazardous substances and impurities. This study is focusing on the reduction of sulphates in the eluate of crushed concrete. An investigation of possibilities to optimize demolition and dismantling as well as treatment of crushed concrete with the objective of gaining recycled concrete aggregates of high quality. Based on a literature research and a data review the origins of sulfates in buildings and also the availability of techniques for demolition and treatment of crushed concrete are listed and evaluated. Using the examples of different building types scenarios for selective dismantling and non-selective demolition (focused on reducing suphates) are evaluated in terms of affecting the environment. In addition samples from real demolition construction sites and plants for treatment of construction rubble were investigated. Based on these results recommendations for the production of high quality recycled concrete aggregates are worked out. A numeric approximation of the densification kinetics is then obtained on the basis of Frenkel, Mackenzie–Shuttleworth, and Einstein–Roscoe models, and optimized sintering conditions for 3D-printed structures are derived. Fully isotropic sintering of complex cellular composites is obtained by continuous heating to 750°C at a rate of 2 K/min for a HAp content of 40 wt%. The approach can readily be generalized for printing and sintering of similar glass-ceramic composites. N2 - Oriented surface crystallization on polished diopside glass surfaces has been studied with scanning electron microscopy, electron backscatter diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and laser scanning microscopy. An orientation preference of [001] parallel to the glass surface was detected for separately growing diopside crystals even as small as 700 nm in size. This finding shows that crystal orientation occurs in the outermost surface layer without crystal-crystal interaction and indicates that the crystal orientation is a result of oriented nucleation. Depending on surface preparation, monomodal crystal orientation distributions with [100] perpendicular to the surface or bimodal distributions with [100] and [010] perpendicular to the glass Surface were detected. It was also shown that the degree of crystal orientation increases with decreasing Surface roughness. The observed orientation of diopside crystals could be explained in terms of the interfacial energies of different crystal faces. An adapted sample geometry is utilized in order to create terraces with a well-define d step in erosion depth from the surface. The method consists of milling a notch into the surface, followed by glancing-angle ion beam erosion, which leads to preferential erosion at the notch due to increased local surface elevation. The process of terrace formation can be utilized in sample preparation for analytical scanning electron microscopy in order to get efficient access to the depth-dependent microstructure of a material. It is demonstrated that the method can be applied to both conducting and non-conducting specimens. Furthermore, experimental parameters influencing the preparation success are determined. Finally, as a proof-of-concept, an electron backscatter diffraction study on a surface crystallized diopside glass ceramic is performed, where the method is used to analyze orientation dependent crystal growth phenomena occurring during growth of surface crystals into the bulk. Measured and literature crack growth data were compared with calculated intrinsic fracture toughness data obtained from Young´s moduli and the theoretical fracture surface energy estimated from chemical bond energies. Data analysis reveals significant deviations from this intrinsic brittle fracture behavior. These deviations do not follow simple compositional trends. Two opposing processes may explain this finding: a decrease in the apparent fracture surface energy due to stress-induced chemical changes at the crack tip and its increase due to energy dissipation during fracture. T1 - Hierarchically porous and mechanically stable monoliths from ordered mesoporous silica and their water filtration potential JF - Nanoscale Advances N2 - Mechanically stable structures with interconnected hierarchical porosity combine the benefits of both small and large pores, such as high surface area, pore volume, and good mass transport capabilities. Hence, lightweight micro-/meso-/macroporous monoliths are prepared from ordered mesoporous silica COK-12 by means of spark plasma sintering (SPS, S-sintering) and compared to conventionally (C-) sintered monoliths. A multi-scale model is developed to fit the small angle X-ray scattering data and obtain information on the hexagonal lattice parameters, pore sizes from the macro to the micro range, as well as the dimensions of the silica population. For both sintering techniques, the overall mesoporosity, hexagonal pore ordering, and amorphous character are preserved. The monoliths' porosity (77–49%), mesopore size (6.2–5.2 nm), pore volume (0.50–0.22 g cm-3 ), and specific surface area (451–180 m2 g-1) decrease with increasing processing temperature and pressure. While the difference in porosity is enhanced, the structural parameters between the C-and S-sintered monoliths are largely converging at 900 C, except for the mesopore size and lattice parameter, whose dimensions are more extensively preserved in the S-sintered monoliths, however, coming along with larger deviations from the theoretical lattice. Their higher mechanical properties (biaxial strength up to 49 MPa, 724 MPa HV 9.807 N) at comparable porosities and ability to withstand ultrasonic treatment and dead-end filtration up to 7 bar allow S-sintered monoliths to reach a high permeance (2634 L m-2 h-1 bar-1), permeability (1.25 x 10^-14 m2), and ability to reduce the chemical oxygen demand by 90% during filtration of a surfactant-stabilized oil in water emulsion, while indicating reasonable resistance towards fouling. The experimental testing allowed obtaining the maximum horizontal loads, the displacement capacity and the level of non-linear behaviour of the respective loaddisplacement relationships as well as the failure modes. The calibration of the numerical model (finite element method) was carried out based on the experimental results. Within this framework, a micromodelling approach was considered. The behaviour of the rammed earth material was simulated using a total strain rotating crack model. A Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion was used to reproduce the behaviour of the interfaces between the layers. Although the numerical results achieved a satisfactory agreement with the experimental results a sensitivity analysis of the parameters involved was performed. The sensitivity analysis aimed at determining which parameters of the model have a significant impact in the model’s results. As expected the sensitivity analysis pointed out that the sliding failure occurrence is mainly influenced by two parameters of the interface elements: the interface tensile strength fit and the friction angle u. Moreover the cohesion c and the layers thickness showed a limited effect on the shear behaviour. It should be noted that the results mentioned above are related to the cases where a significant level of vertical compressive stress r is employed. Both determines the distribution of the alloying elements in the microstructure and the resulting material properties. The addition of nitrogen is known to be beneficial for the pitting corrosion resistance of stainless steels. In case of MSS this effect is not only connected to nitrogen itself because nitrogen can be used to substitute carbon which also influences the result of the heat treatment process. This paper shows the effect of nitrogen on the corrosion resistance in relation to the hardening process of MSS. Therefore the effects of austenitization duration, austenitization temperature and cooling rate on microstructure, hardness and corrosion resistance were studied on the MSS X30CrMoN15 1 and X50CrMoV15. The effect of different cooling rates was studied in the range of > 100 K/s down to 1 K/s using the jominy end quench test. The changes in corrosion resistance were detected with electrochemical potentiodynamic reactivation (EPR) and by the determination of critical pitting potentials. Besides this experimental approach thermodynamic calculations with the software thermocalc will be presented and used for the interpretation of the effect of nitrogen on the corrosion resistance of MSS. Beides bestimmt die Verteilung der Legierungselemente im Gefüge und die daraus resultierenden Werkstoffeigenschaften. Das Legieren mit Stickstoff bewirkt im Allgemeinen eine Verbesserung der Lochkorrosionsbeständigkeit von nichtrostenden Stählen. Bei martensitischen nichtrostenden Stählen ist dieser Effekt nicht nur auf den Stickstoffgehalt selbst zurückzuführen, sondern auch auf den gleichzeitig verringerten Kohlenstoffgehalt, der ebenfalls das Ergebnis der Wärmebehandlung beeinflusst. In dieser Arbeit wird der Einfluss von Stickstoff auf die Korrosionsbeständigkeit in Bezug zum Härtungsprozess von MNS dargestellt. Dazu wird vergleichend der Effekt von Austenitisierungsdauer, -temperatur und Abkühlgeschwindigkeit auf Gefüge, Härte und Korrosionsbeständigkeit der MNS X50CrMoV15 und X30CrMoN15 1 untersucht. Die Abkühlgeschwindigkeit wurde mit dem Stirnabschreckversuch gezielt variiert, um den Einfluss von Abkühlgeschwindigkeiten von > 100 K/s bis 1 K/s zu charakterisieren. Die Veränderungen der Korrosionsbeständigkeit werden durch die elektrochemisch potentiodynamische Reaktivierung (EPR) und durch die Bestimmung kritischer Lochkorrosionspotentiale dokumentiert. Although the acceptance levels are in accordance with DIN 27201 part 7, the testing results have shown in recent years that in the case of true indications, the effective defect sizes were far below the level of acceptance. Due to this experience it can be assumed that the automated ultrasonic inspection systems are testing substantially more sensitively than required. This increased sensitivity leads to an increase in false indications, generally resulting in the unnecessary demounting of wheelsets. In Research cooperation between Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) and DB the effective flaw detection sensitivity of existing automated ultrasonic inspection system will be determined and the true/false indication ratio optimised. Through systematic investigations with the Probability of Detection method on the existing automated ultrasonic inspection system the results could be directly applied to the optimisation of existing ultrasonic inspections of wheelset axles with a bore hole in maintenance procedures and the level of reliability can be considerably increased. The key elements are a fs-fiber laser, a fiber stretcher delay line and fiber-coupled antennas, which contain novel InAlAs-InGaAs multi layer chips. First experimental data obtained with this system demonstrates its great potential and robustness. In addition, we investigate different hazardous and harmless liquids in reflection geometry. These experiments show that liquids are in principle distinguishable by terahertz spectroscopy. Finally, first steps towards an algorithm that allows for an extraction of the liquids dielectric properties are discussed. T2 - Proceedings of the 19th World Conference on Non-Destructive Testing N2 - The General Guidance in the Swedish regulations state that the safety assessment for a final repository for spent nuclear fuel should be 1 million years after closure. SKB developed the KBS-3 method, according to which the spent nuclear fuel is protected by three barriers. It is encapsulated in canisters with a diameter of 1 metre and a length of 5 metres. The canister consists of a cast iron insert surrounded by a 5 centimetre thick shell of copper. The canisters are disposed in the bedrock at a depth of about 500 meters surrounded by bentonite clay. In order to assess the safety over this extremely long period, an extensive quality control programme is applied to the canisters before deposit. In this programme, the use of non-destructive testing (NDT) is vital. The safety assessment of the canister in turn places high demands on the coverage, detectability, and reliability of the applied NDT inspections of the canister parts, i.e. cast iron insert, copper base, tube and lid, and the copper friction stir welds (FSW). This paper presents the extensive full-scale inspection development programme that runs at the Canister Laboratory in Oskarshamn (Sweden). In order to fulfil the high demands, phased array ultrasonic inspection techniques are developed using practical trials aided by ultrasonic modelling. The techniques apply, for example, different frequencies, inspection angles, focus depths, and both longitudinal and shear waves. Increased inspection reliability of the FSW is achieved by applying digital X-ray technique using a 9 MeV linear accelerator and a line detector. To complete the coverage, complementary surface inspections methods, i.e. eddy current array, magnetic flux sensor techniques and magnetic particle inspection, are applied. The canister safety assessment was the driving force to include reliability studies during the NDT development. Initially, the technical reliability was considered, resulting in development of advanced POD models (probability of detection). In combination with human factors studies, these models were implemented as tools in the development of the NDT techniques. Human factors studies were also applied to improve the inspection procedures to be more user-friendly enabling reliable inspections. The paper presents two cooperative projects focused on project management, testing performance and experimental results. In the first project, a full-scale prototype of a package for transport and storage of spent fuel elements with a total mass of 127,000 kg and its reduced-scale model which was similar to the prototype in both geometry and design were drop tested in 9 m and 1 m puncture tests at various drop orientations under regulatory conditions. In context with a corresponding research project the test data was used in combination with numerical methods to investigate the phenomenon of internal cask- content collisions during drop tests. Here, technological gaps between basket or radioactive content and cask body or primary lid can be a reason for significant high dynamic loadings of cask components and its internals due to additional impact interactions in the cask cavity caused by inner relative movement between content and cask. Further investigations were carried out in the field of similarity mechanics comparing experimental drop test data of the full-scale prototype and reduced-scale model in regard to the transferability of package impact response from reduced-scale models to full-scale packages. In the second project, drop tests with a waste container for intermediate depth disposal were per-formed being contracted by Kobe Steel, Ltd. and a consortium of Japanese electric power plant com-panies. The drop test program comprised three single 8-m drop tests in a specimen’s corner edge orientation. For drop tests according to legal regulations for interim storage or final disposal it is often necessary to use a target which represents the real ground of the storage facility. In such cases the container hits directly onto a well-defined concrete slab on top of the IAEA target. Here, the directly impact target for the drop tests were concrete slabs manufactured in Japan and connected by mortar to the impact pad of the unyielding IAEA target. This proof is based on a combined X-ray powder diffraction and X-ray fluorescence investigation of an SSA produced at a large-scale fluidized bed incineration facility serving a catching area with a population of 2 million. The structural and chemical characterization was carried out on 'as received' SSA samples as well as on solid residues remaining after leaching this SSA in sodium hydroxide solution. Thus, it was ascertained that the observed nanocrystalline and stacking-disordered cristobalite-like component belongs to the aluminum phosphate component of this SSA, rather than to its silicon dioxide component. In addition, a direct proof is presented that the chemically stabilized β-cristobalite form of AlPO4 does crystallize from X-ray amorphous precursors under conditions that mimic the huge heating rate and short retention time (just seconds at T ≈ 850°C), typical for fluidized bed incinerators. To penetrate with laser light into the volume of a ceramic powder compact it is necessary to investigate the light scattering properties of ceramic powders. Compared with polymers and metals, ceramic materials are unique as they offer a wide optical window of transparency. The optical window typically ranges from below 0.3 up to 5 µm wave length. In the present study thin layers of quartz glass (SiO2) particles have been prepared. As a function of layer thickness and the particle size, transmission and reflection spectra in a wave length range between 0.5 and 2.5 µm have been recorded. Depending on the respective particle size and by choosing a proper relation between particle size and wave length of the incident laser radiation, it is found that light can penetrate a powder compact up to a depth of a few millimeters. With an adjustment of the light absorption properties of the compact the initiation of sintering in the volume of the compact is possible. Werkstofftechnischen Kolloquium N2 - Das Korrosionsverhalten von kohlenstoffhaltigen martensitischen nichtrostenden Stählen variiert in Abhängigkeit der Wärmebehandlung (WB) und der damit eingestellten Mikrostruktur deutlich stärker als bei kohlenstoffarmen ferritischen und austenitischen nichtrostenden Stählen. Bei erhöhtem Kohlenstoffgehalt bestimmt die diffusionsgesteuerte Bildung und Auflösung von Chromkarbiden die Verteilung von Chrom und Kohlenstoff im Gefüge. Bisher lag der Fokus von Forschungsarbeiten zum Einfluss der WB auf dem Anlassen im allgemein bekannten Sensibilisierungsbereich dieser Werkstoffgruppe zwischen 200 °C und 700 °C und der dort auftretenden Chromverarmung. Mit der gezielten WB des X46Cr13 (1.4034) wird gezeigt, dass Temperatur und Dauer beim Austenitisieren sowie die anschließende Abkühlung beim Härten das Korrosionsverhalten schon vor dem Anlassen signifikant beeinflussen. Auf der Basis von thermodynamischen Berechnungen wurden definierte WB ausgewählt, um gezielt unterschiedliche Volumengehalte von Chromkarbiden im Gefüge und somit auch unterschiedliche Chrom bzw. Kohlenstoffgehalte im Mischkristall zu erzeugen. Anschließend wurden die resultierenden Gefügezustände hinsichtlich Chromkarbidanteil und Härte verglichen und das Korrosionsverhalten mit der elektrochemisch potentiodynamischen Reaktivierung (EPR) sowie durch einen Schnelltest mit der KorroPad-Prüfung untersucht. Dabei konnte ein direkter Zusammenhang zwischen WB, Mikrostrukturänderungen und Korrosionsverhalten festgestellt werden. Mit steigender Austenitisierungstemperatur wird der Anteil an Chromkarbiden reduziert und der Kohlenstoff- und Chromgehalt der Matrix erhöht, bis eine vollständige Auflösung der Chromkarbide gegeben und die chemische Nennzusammensetzung der Legierung im Mischkristall erreicht ist. In der direkten Folge wird die Ausbildung der für nichtrostende Stähle charakteristischen Passivschicht erleichtert und das Lochkorrosionsverhalten verbessert. Die Abkühlrate hat neben den Austenitisierungsparametern ebenfalls einen großen Einfluss auf das Korrosionsverhalten. So führt eine langsame Abkühlung an Luft zu einer Chromverarmung im Gefüge, die eine deutlich erhöhte Lochkorrosionsanfälligkeit zur Folge hat. All currently available sizing techniques able to address nanoparticles were systematically evaluated. It was demonstrated that particle sizing techniques like: analytical centrifugation, particle tracking analysis, single-particle inductively coupled plasma mass-spectrometry, differential electrical mobility analysis, dynamic light scattering, small angle X-ray scattering, ultrasonic attenuation spectrometry, but also gas Adsorption analysis based on the BET-method can be applied for a screening classification. However, the quality of the results depends on the individual material to be classified. For well-dispersed, nearly spherical (nano)particles most of the sizing techniques can be applied in a quick and reliable way. In this work, we report on a metal-assisted and solvent-mediated reaction between calcium carbide and cyanuric chloride, as cheap and commercially available precursors, to synthesize two-dimensional triazine structures (2DTSs). The reaction between the solvent, dimethylformamide, and cyanuric chloride was promoted by calcium carbide and resulted in dimethylamino-s-triazine intermediates, which in turn undergo nucleophilic substitutions. This reaction was directed into two dimensions by calcium ions derived from calcium carbide and induced the formation of 2DTSs. The role of calcium ions to direct the two-dimensionality of the final structure was simulated using DFT and further proven by synthesizing molecular intermediates. Although the formation of amide-based species and the presence of citrazinic acid type derivates assumed to be responsible for a blue emission is confirmed for both CDs by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry, a higher abundance of sp2-hybridized nitrogen is observed for DAP-based CDs, which causes a red-shift of the n-π* absorption band relative to the one of PEI-based CDs. These CD Systems possess high photoluminescence quantum yields (QY) of ∼40% and ∼48% at neutral pH, demonstrating a possible tuning of the optical properties by the amine precursor. pH-Dependent spectroscopic studies revealed a drop in QY to < 9% (pH ∼ 1) and < 21% (pH ∼ 12) for both types of CDs under acidic and basic conditions. In contrast, significant differences in the pHdependency of the n-π* transitions are found for both CD types which are ascribed to different (de)protonation sequences of the CD-specific fluorophores and functional groups using Zeta potential analysis. Despite its importance for brain connectivity, very little is known about SWM in humans, mainly due to the lack of noninvasive imaging methods. Here, we lay the groundwork for systematic in vivo SWM mapping using ultrahigh resolution 7 T magnetic resonance imaging. Using biophysical modeling informed by quantitative ion beam microscopy on postmortem brain tissue, we demonstrate that MR contrast in SWM is driven by iron and can be linked to the microscopic iron distribution. Higher SWM iron concentrations were observed in U-fiber–rich frontal, temporal, and parietal areas, potentially reflecting high fiber density or late myelination in these areas. Our SWM mapping approach provides the foundation for systematic studies of interindividual differences, plasticity, and pathologies of this crucial structure for cortico-cortical connectivity in humans. To uncover and overcome these issues, scientists working on SHM and GW problems joined in an expert committee under the patronage of the German Society for Non-Destructive Testing. An initiated online survey among more than 700 experts and users reveals the hurdles hindering the practical application of GWbased SHM. Firstly, methods for proof of reliability of SHM approaches are missing. Secondly, detailed understanding of phenomenological described wave-damage interactions is needed. Additionally, there are significant unsolved implementation issues and unsolved problems of signal processing including handling of environmental influences. To enable substantial proof of reliability without unaffordable experimental effort also efficient simulation tools including realistic damage interaction are needed, enabling the joint use of experimental and simulated data to predict the capabilities of the Monitoring system. Considering these issues, the committee focusses on simulation, signal processing, as well as probability of detection and standardization. In the presented work, recent activities of the expert committee starting with survey results are summarized. An open access data basis of life-like measurements is presented to allow testing and comparison of signal processing and simulation algorithms. Finally, a strategy for efficient proof of reliability increasing the acceptance of SHM in industry and for successful Integration of SHM into real-world engineering structures is proposed. Density measurements show that ionic porosity decreases from 54.4% (Qz) to 51.5% (Np) and from 52.4% (Ab) to 50.2% (Ds). Hydrogen diffusivity D follows similar trends but at another scale. D at 523 K decreases from 4×10−12 to 3×10−14m2 s−1 (Qz-Np) and from 4×10−13 to 3×10−15m2 s−1 (Ab-Ds). Charge compensating Na+ acting as a filling agent in fully polymerized network structures leads to up to one order of Magnitude higher diffusivities as depolymerized glass structures of the same SiO2 content where Na+ takes the role of a modifier ion. Temperature dependence of the diffusivity indicates that both the activation energy involved with the moving H2 molecule as well as the accessible volume in the structure contribute to this compositional trend. As very low permeation through the container wall is required for storage of compressed hydrogen, development of glasses of minimal hydrogen permeability is needed. For this purpose, one has to understand better the dependence of hydrogen permeability on glass structure. The paper points out that minimizing the accessible free volume is as one strategy to minimize hydrogen permeability. Based on previously measured and comprehensive literature data, it is shown that permeation is independently controlled by ionic porosity and network modifier content. Thus, ionic porosity in modified and fully polymerized networks can be decreased equally to the lowest hydrogen permeability among the glasses under study. Applying this concept, a drop of up to 30,000 with respect to the permeation of hydrogen molecules through silica glass is attainable. Diese werden nur durch eine optimal durchgeführte Wärmebehandlung des martensitischen nichtrostenden Stahls 1.4116 (X50CrMoV15) erreicht. In der industriellen Fertigung wird die Korrosionsbeständigkeit von Schneidwaren durch Wechseltauchversuche überprüft, die herstellerübergreifend eine große Schwankung der Korrosionsbeständigkeit belegen. In den letzten Jahren wurden neue elektrochemische Untersuchungsmethoden für die Werkstoffgruppe der martensitischen nichtrostenden Stähle entwickelt, welche die geringe Lochkorrosionsbeständigkeit von Schneidwaren auf das Phänomen der Chromverarmung zurückzuführen. Derzeit wird in der wissenschaftlichen und in der industriellen Gemeinschaft der Schritt des Anlassens als Hauptursache der Chromverarmung angesehen. Bei Schneidwaren sind die Anlasstemperaturen aber zu gering, um die auftretende Chromverarmung zu erklären. Aus diesem Grund wurden drei verschiedene Wärmebehandlungsparameter (Austenitisierungsdauer, Abkühlgeschwindigkeit und Anlasstemperatur) systematische untersucht, um deren Beitrag zur Chromverarmung darzustellen. Dazu wird die Untersuchungsmethode der elektrochemisch potentiodynamischen Reaktivierung (EPR) eingesetzt, die sehr sensibel auf Veränderungen im Gefüge reagiert und den Grad an Chromverarmung ermittelt. Außerdem wurde die KorroPad-Prüfung durchgeführt und kritische Lochkorrosionspotentiale ermittelt, um den Zusammenhang zwischen Chromverarmung und Lochkorrosionsbeständigkeit herzustellen. Both are achieved by the heat treatment (austenitization, quenching and tempering) of the normally used martensitic stainless steels. The established quality control method regarding the pitting corrosion resistance is an alternating immersion test in 1 % NaCl solution at 60 °C according to DIN EN ISO 8442. This standard test shows a high deviation, which limits any optimization of the heat treatment process. New approaches for corrosion testing of martensitic stainless-steels were developed and used in the last years to connect the weak pitting corrosion resistance of martensitic stainless-steels with the phenomenon of chromium depletion. The tempering temperatures used in the industrial heat treatment of cutlery are too low to explain the appearance of chromium depletion. For this reason, a systematic investigation of three heat treatment parameters (austenitization time, cooling speed and tempering temperature) were performed on the martensitic stainless-steels X50CrMoV15 (1.4116) to detect their contribution to chromium depletion. The electrochemical potentiodynamic reactivation (EPR), which is very sensitive to any change of the microstructure, was used to quantify the degree of chromium depletion. The KorroPad indicator-test was applied to correlate low pitting corrosion resistance to the presence of chromium depletion. T1 - Precipitation behavior and corrosion resistance of nickel-free, high-nitrogen austenitic stainless steels N2 - Nickel-free, nitrogen alloyed austenitic stainless-steels, with about 19 wt.-% Mn and 0,8 wt. % N, are an interesting alternative to classic CrNi austenitic stainless steels due to their superior mechanical properties (Rm > 900 MPa, A5 > 50 %, Av > 350 J) in the solution annealed condition. The formation of chromium-rich nitrides during suboptimal heat treatment, processing or application leads to an inhomogeneous distribution of alloying elements in the microstructure, which reduces the corrosion resistance. Consequently, an accurate knowledge of the sensitization behavior is indispensable for the use of nickel-free, high-nitrogen austenitic stainless steels. The relationship between artificial aging, phase formation and corrosion resistance was investigated on the alloys X8CrMnN18-19 (1.3815) and X8CrMnMoN18-19-2 (1.4456), both alloyed with 0,8 wt.-% Nitrogen, in the present work. The microstructural evolution was studied by LM and SEM while the corrosion resistance was characterized with the electrochemical potentiodynamic reactivation (EPR) and the KorroPad indicator-test. Both alloys showed increased corrosion susceptibility within critical aging parameters. Finally, a sensitization diagram was described successfully for both alloys showing the positive effect of molybdenum. Die Korrosionsbeständigkeit von Schweißverbindungen wird, neben dem Grundwerkstoff, dem Schweißzusatzwerkstoff und dem Schweißverfahren, auch sehr stark von der Schweißnaht-Nachbehandlung beeinflusst. Je nach zukünftigem Anwendungsbereich, geforderter Optik und Korrosionsbeständigkeit wird die Schweißnaht geschliffen, gebeizt, elektropoliert oder gestrahlt, um die beim Schweißen entstehenden An-lauffarben zu entfernen. Gestrahlte Oberflächen sind in der industriellen Praxis häufig anzutreffen, da sie deutlich schneller und kostengünstiger herzustellen sind als geschliffene, gebeizte oder polierte Oberflächen. Das Strahlen mit Korund ist außerdem effektiver als das Strahlen mit Glasperlen. In den letzten Jahren wurden korrosionsanfällige Oberflächen bei nichtrostenden Stählen beobachtet, wenn diese mit Korund geschliffen wurden. Daher wird nun auch beim Strahlen kritisch hinterfragt, ob die eingesetzten Strahlmittel die Korrosionsbeständigkeit beeinflussen. Diese Fragestellung wird beantwortet, indem geschliffene, gebeizte, polierte und mit verschiedenen Strahlmitteln gestrahlte Schweißverbindungen vom Duplexstahl 1.4062 im Vergleich zu gleichartig behandeltem Walzmaterial untersucht werden. Verschiedene wissenschaftliche Arbeiten haben bereits gezeigt, dass die Korrosionsbeständigkeit sehr stark vom Anteil an Chromkarbiden im Gefüge bestimmt wird. Der kombinierte Einfluss von Kohlenstoffgehalt und der Abkühlgeschwindigkeit beim Härten wurde mit Fokus auf die Korrosionsbeständigkeit bisher nur unzureichend untersucht. Die Literatur liefert außerdem gegensätzliche Aussagen über den Einfluss der Abkühlgeschwindigkeit, was möglicherweise auf unterschiedliche Kohlenstoffgehalte zurückgeführt werden kann. In dieser Arbeit wird daher systematisch untersucht, ab welcher Abkühlgeschwindigkeit es bei den Werkstoffen X20Cr13 und X46Cr13 zu Karbidbildung und Chromverarmung kommt. Die Variation der Abkühlgeschwindigkeit erfolgte für die industriell relevante Härtetemperatur von 1050 °C mit dem Stirnabschreckversuch. In Abhängigkeit von der Abkühlgeschwindigkeit wurden an den Stirnabschreckproben Gefüge, Härte und Korrosionsbeständigkeit (EPR, kritische Lochkorrosionspotentiale) untersucht und die Ergebnisse mit thermodynamischen Berechnungen (ThermoCalc) korreliert. Druckaufgestickte nichtrostende Austenite mit ca. 19 Gew.-% Mangan und 0,8 Gew.-% Stickstoff, sind als nickelfreie Variante seit einigen Jahren großtechnisch auf dem Markt verfügbar. In diesen Stählen wird die austenitische Matrix ohne die Legierungszugabe von Nickel sichergestellt, während gleichzeitig die korrosive Beständigkeit und die mechanischen Eigenschaften verbessert werden. Wie bei allen nichtrostenden Stählen beeinflussen die chemische Zusammensetzung und die Wärmebehandlung entscheidend das Gefüge und die Eigenschaften. Durch Lösungsglühen, Abschrecken und gezieltes Kaltverfestigen können bei diesen Stählen hervorragende mechanische Kennwerte erreicht werden (Rm von 900 MPa bis 2.000 MPa, A5 > 50 %, Av > 350 J). In der Regel dient das Lösungsglühen der Beseitigung unerwünschter Ausscheidungsphasen (Cr2N, M23C6 und Sigma-Phase) und der homogenen Verteilung der Legierungselemente im Austenit, was auch die Voraussetzung für eine hohe Korrosionsbeständigkeit darstellt. Wird die homogene Verteilung der Legierungselemente (Cr, Mo und N) durch suboptimale Wärmebehandlungs-, Verarbeitungs- oder Einsatzbedingungen beeinträchtigt, kann die korrosive Beständigkeit nicht auf Dauer gewährleistet werden. Daher ist die genaue Kenntnis vom Sensibilisierungsverhalten dieser hochstickstofflegierten Stähle unerlässlich. Am stickstofflegierten Werkstoff 1.4456 (X8CrMnMoN18-18-2) wird das Sensibilisierungsverhalten am lösungsgeglühten Zustand durch die gezielte Variation der Warmauslagerungsparameter untersucht. Dabei wird im Temperaturbereich von 500 °C bis 900 °C die Glühdauer systematisch variiert, um zu ermitteln, wann Ausscheidungen im Gefüge auftreten und ob diese die Korrosionsbeständigkeit beeinträchtigen. Die verschiedenen Sensibilisierungszustände werden mit dem EPR Verfahren, der KorroPad-Prüfung und dem REM vergleichend untersucht. Zur besseren Interpretation der experimentellen Ergebnisse werden auch thermodynamische Berechnungen genutzt, welche die Existenzbereiche der verschiedenen Ausscheidungsphasen vorhersagen. Since they have to withstand harsh chemical as well as thermo-mechanical environments, internal stresses and microcracking are often present in such materials under operating conditions (sometimes in excess of 1700 °C). We studied the evolution of thermal (CTE) and mechanical (Young’s modulus) properties as a function of temperature in a fused-cast refractory containing 94 wt.% of monoclinic ZrO2 and 6 wt.% of a silicate glassy phase. With the aid of X-ray refraction techniques (yielding the internal specific surface in materials), we also monitored the evolution of microcracking as a function of thermal cycles (crossing the martensitic phase transformation around 1000 °C) under externally applied stress. We found that external compressive stress leads to a strong decrease of the internal surface per unit volume, but a tensile load has a similar (though not so strong) effect. In agreement with existing literature on -eucryptite microcracked ceramics, we could explain These phenomena by microcrack closure in the load direction in the compression case, and by microcrack propagation (rather than microcrack nucleation) under tensile conditions. Currently the Synthetic Aperture Focusing Technique (SAFT), which is closely related to Kirchhoff migration, is used in most cases for imaging. However, this method is known to have difficulties to image steeply dipping interfaces as well as lower boundaries of tubes, voids or similar objects. We have transferred a processing technique from geophysics, the Reverse Time Migration (RTM) method, to improve the imaging of complicated geometries. By using the information from wide angle reflections as well as from multiple events there are fewer limitations compared to SAFT. As a drawback the required computing power is significantly higher compared to the techniques currently used. Synthetic experiments have been performed on polyamide and concrete specimens to show the improvements compared to SAFT. We have been able to image vertical interfaces of step-like structures as well as the lower boundaries of circular objects. It has been shown that RTM is a step forward for ultrasonic testing in civil engineering. With this method, both the solubility S and the diffusivity D were determined, while the permeability was given by the product SD. For all glasses, S was found to decrease with temperature, while D increased. Since the activation energy of diffusion of H2 molecules exceeded that of dissolution, permeation increased slightly with temperature. When extrapolated to standard conditions (25 °C), the permeability of tectosilicate glasses was found to be only 10-22–10-24 mol H2 (m s Pa)-1, which is 8–10 magnitudes lower than most polymers. Thin glass liners of these compositions are expected to be the most effective barrier for tanks of pressurised hydrogen. Shaping these materials with additive manufacturing (AM) techniques, like robocasting, could enable their use with the benefit of on‐demand, customized shaping and maximizing performance. Herein, ordered mesoporous silica COK‐12 slurries were robocasted into monoliths, containing different ratios of uncalcined COK‐12 and sodium bentonite (0–25 wt.%). The rheology of the mixed slurries is characterized by lower flow indexes (0.69 vs. 0.32) and higher yield stresses (96 vs. 259 Pa) compared to pure COK‐12 ones. Monoliths were printed in woodpile structures and calcined at 600°C. Micro‐CT measurements showed a linear shrinkage of 25% after calcination. Mechanical characterization showed increased uniaxial strength (0.20 ± 0.07 to 1.0 ± 0.3 MPa) with increasing binder/solids ratio from 13 to 25%. The amorphous, mesoporous structure of COK‐12 was retained. The structures exhibited open porosities of 52 ± 4% and showed higher specific mesopore volumes, and increased average mesopore size (6 vs. 8 nm) compared to COK‐12. Small‐angle x‐ray scattering analysis revealed an increased lattice parameter (10.3 vs. 11.0 nm) and reduced wall thickness (3.1 nm vs. 4.1 nm) of the COK‐12 in the monoliths. These properties indicate suitability for their application as porous supports and adsorbents. Several improvements have been implemented in this time, and this review provides an overview of the imaging methods available at the BAMline. Besides classic full-field synchrotron X-ray computed tomography (SXCT), also absorption edge CT, synchrotron X-ray refraction radiography (SXRR), and synchrotron X-ray refraction tomography (SXRCT) are used for imaging. Moreover, virtually any of those techniques are currently coupled in situ or operando with ancillary equipment such as load rigs, furnaces, or potentiostats. Each of the available techniques is explained and both the current and the potential usage are described with corresponding examples. The potential use is manifold, the examples cover organic materials, composite materials, energy-related materials, biological samples, and materials related to additive manufacturing. In two separate fluorination steps for core and shell formation, the corresponding metal lactates are reacted with anhydrous HF in ethylene glycol. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) confirm the formation of particles with mean dimensions between 6.4 and 11.5 nm. The overall chemical composition of the particles during the different reaction steps is monitored by quantitative Al Kα excitation X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Here, the formation of stoichiometric metal fluorides (MF2) is confirmed, both for the core and the final core–shell particles. Furthermore, an in-depth analysis by synchrotron radiation XPS (SR-XPS) with tunable excitation energy is performed to confirm the core–Shell character of the nanoparticles. Additionally, Ca2p/Sr3d XPS intensity ratio in-Depth profiles are simulated using the software Simulation of Electron Spectra for Surface Analysis (SESSA). In principle, core–shell like particle morphologies are formed but without a sharp interface between calcium and strontium containing phases. Surprisingly, the in-depth chemical distribution of the two types of nanoparticles is equal within the error of the experiment. Both comprise a SrF2-rich core domain and CaF2-rich shell domain with an intermixing zone between them. Consequently, the internal morphology of the final nanoparticles seems to be independent from the synthesis chronology. As an alternative, we used lanthanides for labeling of primary antibodies, which are applied in IHC. Laser ablation (LA) ICPMS was elaborated as a detection tool for multiplexed IHC of tissue sections. In this study, we optimized sample preparation steps and LA ICPMS parameters to achieve a sufficient signal-to-background ratio. The results prove the high selectivity of applied antibodies, which was sustained after labeling. Up to three tumor markers (Her 2, CK 7, and MUC 1) were detected simultaneously in a single multiplex analysis of a 5 µm thin breast cancer tissue at a laser spot size of 200 µm. Furthermore, the LA ICPMS results indicate a significantly higher expression level of MUC 1 compared to Her 2 and CK 7, which was not obvious from the conventionally stained tissue sections. Therein, iodine was employed as an elemental dye for fibroblast cells and for thin tissue sections. At an incubation time of 60 s, iodine is located mainly within the cell nuclei. This effect was illustrated in fibroblast cells, and iodine signal within the cell nucleus was as high as 5 × 104 cps at 4 µm laser spot size. The surrounding cytoplasm was iodinated as well, but to a lesser extent. The spatial resolution attained was sufficient to detect even smaller cell nuclei within a liver biopsy tissue. Furthermore, iodine was successfully employed for biomolecule labeling and we demonstrated that iodine signal increased with increasing thickness of a palatine tonsil tissue. Thus, the use of iodine as an internal standard to correct for tissue inhomogeneities in LA-ICP-MS was investigated for the simultaneous detection of two tumor markers (Her 2 and CK 7) in breast cancer tissue. The LIPSS were fabricated in an air environment at normal incidence with different values of the laser peak fluence and number of pulses per spot. The morphology of the generated structures was characterized by using scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and Fast-Fourier transform analyses. Moreover, the material structure and the surface chemistry of the carbon fibers before and after laser irradiation was analyzed by micro Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Large areas in the cm2 range of carbon fiber arrangements were successfully processed with homogenously distributed high- and low-spatial frequency LIPSS. Beyond those distinct nanostructures, hybrid structures were realized for the very first time by a superposition of both types of LIPSS in a two-step process. The findings facilitate the fabrication of tailored LIPSS-based surface structures on carbon fibers that could be of particular interest for e.g. fiber reinforced polymers and concretes. A1 - Bruno, Giovanni T1 - The stress–strain behavior of refractory microcracked aluminum titanate: The effect of zigzag microcracks and its modeling JF - Journal of the American Ceramic Society N2 - The stress–strain behavior of ceramics, such as aluminum titanate, has certain features that are unusual for brittle materials—in particular, a substantial nonlinearity under uniaxial tension, and load–unload hysteresis caused by the sharp increase of the incremental stiffness at the beginning of unloading. These features are observed experimentally and are attributed to microcracking. Here we compare different degrees of stress–strain nonlinearity of aluminum titanate materials and quantitatively model them. We use advanced mechanical testing to observe the mechanical response at room and high temperature; electron microscopy, and X-ray refraction radiography to observe the microstructural changes. Experiments show that two types of microcracks can be distinguished: (i) microcracks induced by cooling from the sintering temperature (due to heterogeneity and anisotropy of thermal expansion), with typical sizes of the order of grain size, and (ii) much larger microcracks generated by the mechanical loading. The two microcrack types produce different effects on the stress–strain curves. Such microcracks and the features of the stress–strain behavior depend on the density of the cooling-induced microcracks and on the distribution of grain sizes. They are modeled analytically and numerically.
