T1 - The scanning force microscope as a tool for the detection of local mechanical properties within the interphase of fibre reinforced polymers N2 - Scanning force microscopy (SFM) has been used to assess the local mechanical properties of fibre-reinforced polymers. Using a sinusoidal displacement modulation (DM) and lock-in technique the method allows to characterize local viscoelastic properties with a high lateral resolution. The simultaneous measurement of the local electrical conductivity is proposed which facilitates the interpretation of the mechanical data. The investigation of cross-sections perpendicular to the axis of carbon fibres embedded in PPS delivers some information about the change in local stiffness within the interfacial region. As a first approach, assuming a single-exponential decrease in local stiffness along a radial line from fibre to polymer we find characteristic decay lengths which are distributed in a range between 20 and 80nm. Further, a modified DM-mode is proposed which is expected to provide a contrast enhancement of the signal which is related to local stiffness. This can be achieved by installing an additional feedback loop which keeps constant the amplitude of dynamic indentation (CDI-mode). In this study the same gas mixtures were used as in the key comparison CCQM-K74, which was designed to evaluate the level of comparability of National Metrology Institutes' measurement capabilities for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) at a nominal mole fraction of 10 µmol/mol. In the comparison CCQM-K74 most of the participants used chemiluminescence, with a small number using UV absorption or FT-IR spectroscopy, and thus it is of interest to improve understanding of the comparative performance of these techniques because they do not exhibit any cross-sensitivity to nitric acid (HNO3), which was known to be present in the mixtures used for the comparison. The results of this pilot study indicate good consistency and a level of agreement similar to that reported in the comparison CCQM-K74, demonstrating that FT-IR can be operated as a comparison method when calibrated with appropriate gas standards and can achieve similar measurement uncertainties to chemiluminescence and UV absorption techniques. An additional pilot study, CCQM-P110-B2, was conducted on the same gas mixtures in parallel with this pilot study. The second study addressed FT-IR spectroscopy when used to measure the gas mixtures with respect to reference spectra. The results of this second study will be reported elsewhere. Main text. A1 - Bienert, Ralf A1 - Schulz, Burkhard T1 - V-Shaped Crystalline Structures of Di-n-alkyl Esters of Phosphoric Acid N2 - We prepared crystals of di-n-alkyl esters of phosphoric acid with chain lengths of n = 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18. These were characterized by single-crystal X-ray analysis and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was found that the alkyl chains are in an extended all-trans conformation and aligned close to perpendicular, forming V-shaped molecules. This is in strong contrast to the typical arrangement of the alkyl chains of phospholipids where the two alkyl chains are arranged parallel in the same direction (e.g., tuning fork configuration in bilayers). Additionally, it was found that the arrangement of the V-shaped molecules of the di-n-alkyl esters in neighboring stacks of the lamellar crystals is antiparallel for short chain lengths (n = 10 and 12) and parallel for the longer (n = 14 and 16). DSC reveals that the melting of the crystals increases systematically with increasing chain lengths from 48 to 82 C. The contribution of each methylene group to the melting enthalpy (70-133 kJ/mol) is independent of the chain length (3.9 kJ per mol CH2).
