T1 - Interfacing with the Brain: How Nanotechnology Can Contribute N2 - Interfacing artificial devices with the human brain is the central goal of neurotechnology. Yet, our imaginations are often limited by currently available paradigms and technologies. Suggestions for brain−machine interfaces have changed over time, along with the available technology. Mechanical levers and cable winches were used to move parts of the brain during the mechanical age. Sophisticated electronic wiring and remote control have arisen during the electronic age, ultimately leading to plug-and-play computer interfaces. Nonetheless, our brains are so complex that these visions, until recently, largely remained unreachable dreams. The general problem, thus far, is that most of our technology is mechanically and/or electrically engineered, whereas the brain is a living, dynamic entity. As a result, these worlds are difficult to interface with one another. Nanotechnology, which encompasses engineered solid-state objects and integrated circuits, excels at small length scales of single to a few hundred nanometers and, thus, matches the sizes of biomolecules, biomolecular assemblies, and parts of cells. Consequently, we envision nanomaterials and nanotools as opportunities to interface with the brain in alternative ways. Here, we review the existing literature on the use of nanotechnology in brain−machine interfaces and look forward in discussing perspectives and limitations based on the authors’ expertise across a range of complementary disciplines from neuroscience, engineering, physics, and chemistry to biology and medicine, computer science and mathematics, and social science and jurisprudence. We focus on nanotechnology but also include information from related fields when useful and complementary. T1 - Quantitative considerations about the size dependence of cellular entry and excretion of colloidal nanoparticles for different cell types N2 - Most studies about the interaction of nanoparticles (NPs) with cells have focused on how the physicochemical properties of NPs will influence their uptake by cells. However, much less is known about their potential excretion from cells. However, to control and manipulate the number of NPs in a cell, both cellular uptake and excretion must be studied quantitatively. Monitoring the intracellular and extracellular amount of NPs over time (after residual noninternalized NPs have been removed) enables one to disentangle the influences of cell proliferation and exocytosis, the major pathways for the reduction of NPs per cell. Proliferation depends on the type of cells, while exocytosis depends in addition on properties of the NPs, such as their size. Examples are given herein on the role of these two different processes for different cells and NPs. The current level of permitted emissions is typically between 50 µmol/mol and 100 µmol/mol, but lower values are expected in the future. Currently, ambient air quality monitoring regulations also require the measurement of NOx mole fractions as low as 0.2 µmol/mol. The production of accurate standards at these levels of mole fractions requires either dilution of a stable higher concentration gas standard or production by a dynamic technique, for example one based on permeation tubes. The CCQM-K74 key comparison was designed to evaluate the level of comparability of National Metrology Institutes' measurement capabilities and standards for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) at a nominal mole fraction of 10 µmol/mol. The measurements of this key comparison took place from June 2009 to May 2010. Seventeen laboratories took part in this comparison coordinated by the BIPM and VSL. The key comparison reference value was based on BIPM measurement results, and the standard measurement uncertainty of the reference value was 0.042 µmol/mol. This key comparison demonstrated that the results of the majority of the participants agreed within limits of ±3% relative to the reference value. The results of only one laboratory lay significantly outside these limits. Likewise this comparison made clear that a full interpretation of the results of the comparison needed to take into account the presence of nitric acid (in the range 100 nmol/mol to 350 nmol/mol) in the cylinders circulated as part of the comparison, as well as the possible presence of nitric acid in the primary standards used by participating laboratories. A1 - Tuma, Dirk A1 - Kohl, Anka A1 - Schulz, Gert T1 - Final report of the pilot study CCQM-P110-B1: A comparison of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in nitrogen standards at 10 µmol/mol by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) N2 - This pilot study compares the performance of participants in analyzing gas mixtures of nitrogen dioxide in nitrogen by comparison with in-house gravimetric standards using Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). In this study the same gas mixtures were used as in the key comparison CCQM-K74, which was designed to evaluate the level of comparability of National Metrology Institutes' measurement capabilities for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) at a nominal mole fraction of 10 µmol/mol. In the comparison CCQM-K74 most of the participants used chemiluminescence, with a small number using UV absorption or FT-IR spectroscopy, and thus it is of interest to improve understanding of the comparative performance of these techniques because they do not exhibit any cross-sensitivity to nitric acid (HNO3), which was known to be present in the mixtures used for the comparison. The results of this pilot study indicate good consistency and a level of agreement similar to that reported in the comparison CCQM-K74, demonstrating that FT-IR can be operated as a comparison method when calibrated with appropriate gas standards and can achieve similar measurement uncertainties to chemiluminescence and UV absorption techniques. An additional pilot study, CCQM-P110-B2, was conducted on the same gas mixtures in parallel with this pilot study. The second study addressed FT-IR spectroscopy when used to measure the gas mixtures with respect to reference spectra. The results of this second study will be reported elsewhere. Main text. T1 - Liquid crystalline hydrazones revisited: dipolar interactions vs hydrogen bonding affecting mesomorphic properties N2 - In order to understand the role of dipolar interactions vs. H-bonding, a series of hydrazones were synthesised from 4-alkoxy-, 3,4-dialkoxy- or 3,4,5-trialkoxybenzaldehydes and phenyl, bromo- or nitrophenylhydrazine, respectively. Their mesomorphic properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarising optical microscopy (POM), X-ray diffraction (WAXS, SAXS) and compared with known members. Only those hydrazones derived from 3,4,5-trisalkoxybenzaldehyde and either meta, meta-dinitro- or ortho, para-dinitrophenylhydrazine displayed hexagonal columnar mesophases. All other derivatives were non-mesomorphic, even when H-bonds were present. Dipole moments of the various nitro-substituted hydrazones were experimentally determined by dielectric measurements and supported by theoretical DFT calculations, which indicated that the mesophase formation is mostly governed by strong dipole moment and further enforced by intramolecular H-bonding. Schon früher hat die Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) Tabellenwerke herausgegeben, die solche Daten zur Verfügung stellten. Darauf aufbauend wurde 1989 gemeinsam mit der Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) und der Gesellschaft für Chemische Technik und Biotechnologie e. V. (DECHEMA) die Datenbank CHEMSAFE erstellt. CHEMSAFE enthält bewertete sicherheitstechnische Kenngrößen von brennbaren Flüssigkeiten, Gasen und Stäuben. Die Bewertung der brennbaren Gase und Stäube erfolgt durch die BAM, die der brennbaren Flüssigkeiten durch die PTB. CHEMSAFE dient nun als Grundlage, um dem Wunsch nach Daten in gedruckter Form nachzukommen. Die im Tabellenwerk bei Drucklegung wiedergegebenen Kenngrößen entsprechen dem Update 2002 der Datenbank CHEMSAFE. Das neue Tabellenwerk "Sicherheitstechnische Kenngrößen", das auf den empfohlenen Werten aus CHEMSAFE beruht, erscheint in zwei Bänden. Der erste Band "Brennbare Flüssigkeiten und Gase" wird von der PTB herausgegeben, der zweite Band "Explosionsbereiche von Gasgemischen" von der BAM. T1 - Does thermotropic liquid crystalline self-assembly control biological activity in amphiphilic amino acids? – tyrosine ILCs as a case study N2 - Amphiphilic amino acids represent promising scaffolds for biologically active soft matter. In order to understand the bulk self-assembly of amphiphilic amino acids into thermotropic liquid crystalline phases and their biological properties a series of tyrosine ionic liquid crystals (ILCs) was synthesized, carrying a benzoate unit with 0–3 alkoxy chains at the tyrosine unit and a cationic guanidinium head group. Investigation of the mesomorphic properties by polarizing optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (WAXS, SAXS) revealed smectic A bilayers (SmAd) for ILCs with 4-alkoxy- and 3,4-dialkoxybenzoates, whereas ILCs with 3,4,5-trisalkoxybenzoates showed hexagonal columnar mesophases (Colh ), while different counterions had only a minor influence. Dielectric measurements revealed a slightly higher dipole moment of non-mesomorphic tyrosine-benzoates as compared to their mesomorphic counterparts. The absence of lipophilic side chains on the benzoate unit was important for the biological activity. Thus, non-mesomorphic tyrosine benzoates and crown ether benzoates devoid of additional side chains at the benzoate unit displayed the highest cytotoxicities (against L929 mouse fibroblast cell line) and antimicrobial activity (against Escherichia coli DTolC and Staphylococcus aureus) and promising selectivity ratio in favour of antimicrobial activity. A1 - Mohr, F. T1 - Nachqualifikation einer Wasserreibbremse mit Ultraschall N2 - Neu entwickelte Gasturbinen werden im Prüffeld mit wechselnden Belastungen beaufschlagt. Dazu wird die Gasturbine mit einer Wasserreibbremse gekoppelt, mit der eine definierte Last erzeugt werden kann. Ursprünglich war die Wasserreibbremse für eine bestimmte Leistung, die den früheren Leistungen der Gasturbine entsprach, ausgelegt worden. Die erste Prüfung fand im Jahr 1975 statt. Da neuere Gasturbinen wesentlich höhere Leistungen erbringen und die vorhandene Wasserreibbremse weiterhin eingesetzt werden sollte, musste eine Nachqualifizierung vorgenommen werden. Das Ziel war die Absicherung auf eine mögliche Sprödbruchgefahr. Zunächst wurde eine Studie zur Prüfbarkeit erstellt. An speziellen Testkörpern wurden im Ultraschallabor der BAM Vorversuche zur Machbarkeit, zur Empfindlichkeitsein-stellung und zur Vorbereitung der Prüfung durchgeführt. Dazu wurden spezielle Gruppenstrahlerprüfköpfe gefertigt und ein an die komplizierte Geometrie der Bremsscheiben angepasster Manipulator gebaut. Ferner wurde, um die Prüfzeiten zu reduzieren, die Software zur Datenerfassung und zur Auswertung angepasst. Im Werk Berlin der Siemens AG wurde in Zusammenarbeit mit der Siemens AG Erlangen eine Ultraschallprüfung mit der Gruppenstahlertechnik der Wasserreibbremse durchgeführt. Überprüft wurde das gesamte Volumen auf axial, radial und tangential beanspruchte Fehler in den Bereichen der Welle und der Bremsscheibe.Die Überprüfung ergab keine relevanten Fehler, so dass die Wasserreibbremse weiterhin eingesetzt werden kann. In the first part of the paper, a novel concept of a tunable LC phase shifter realized in Low Temperature Cofired Ceramics technology is shown while the second part of the paper deals with a tunable high-gain antenna based on an LC tunable reflectarray. The reflectarray features continuously beam scanning in between ±25°. Also first investigations on radiation hardness of LCs are carried out, indicating that LCs might be suitable for space applications. Im Rahmen des von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) geförderten Schwerpunktprogramms 2388 „Hundert plus – Verlängerung der Lebensdauer komplexer Baustrukturen durch intelligente Digitalisierung“ (kurz: SPP 100+) werden hierfür innovative, interdisziplinäre Methoden entwickelt und an der Nibelungenbrücke in Worms (NBW) validiert. Der vorliegende Beitrag stellt einige dieser neuentwickelten digitalen Methoden vor. Unter anderem umfasst dies zwei Systeme des Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) und deren zielorientierte Verknüpfung von mehreren Beschleunigungsmessdaten zur umfassenden Zustandsbewertung. Ergänzend werden innovative datenbasierte Simulationsmethoden zur Bestimmung des Temperaturfelds des Brückenüberbaus vorgestellt sowie mehrere Finite‐Elemente‐Modelle unterschiedlicher Detailtiefe präsentiert und miteinander verglichen. Abschließend werden innovative Methoden zum Verwalten des Bestandswissens von Brückenbauwerken diskutiert. Die Methoden wurden überwiegend unabhängig voneinander entwickelt und an der NBW validiert. Im nächsten Schritt werden die Methoden integriert, um die Instandhaltung der NBW zu unterstützen. N2 - A simple method of creating defined PMMA and poly (MMA-co-Cz) electrocoatings on carbon fibres is described. The electrodeposition of poly methylmethacrylate (PMMA) onto unsized, unmodified carbon fibres was performed by simple constant current electrolyses of methylmethacrylate (MMA) monomer in dimethylformamide (DMF) solutions and the ‘pure’ liquid monomer using sodium nitrate and lithium perchlorate as supporting electrolytes. The presence of polymeric coatings successfully attached to the carbon fibres was verified by scanning electron microscopy and photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Performing the electrolysis in dilute MMA in DMF solutions ([MMA] < 5 M) results in the deposition of powder-like polymer on the carbon fibre electrodes. Increasing the MMA concentration in the DMF solution results in a homogeneous PMMA coating of the carbon fibres. The degree of grafting or coating increases with increasing MMA concentration, except when pure MMA is used without solvent. The adhesive strength between the electrocoated carbon fibres and a PMMA matrix was determined using the single fibre pull-out test. It was found that the interfacial fracture behaviour of all carbon fibre/PMMA model composites is rather brittle. The adhesion strength between the unmodified carbon fibres and the PMMA matrix was equal to the cohesive strength of the polymer matrix itself. Nevertheless, the electrodeposition of thin and homogeneous PMMA coatings resulted in much improved adhesion strengths. T1 - International comparison CCQM-K66: Impurity analysis of methane N2 - This key comparison was performed to demonstrate the capability of NMIs to analyse the purity of methane for use as a source gas in the preparation of standard gas mixtures. This capability is an essential requirement for the preparation of accurate standards of natural gas and some other fuels. Since it is difficult to carry out a comparison with individual samples of pure gas, the sample for this comparison was a synthetic mixture of high purity methane with selected added impurities of nitrogen, argon, carbon dioxide and ethane. These mixtures were prepared by a gas company as a batch of 10 cylinders and their homogeneity and stability were evaluated by NMIJ. The KCRVs for the four different analytes in this key comparison are based on a consensus of values reported by participants. The uncertainties in the degrees of equivalence were calculated by combining the reported uncertainties with the homogeneity of the samples and the uncertainty of the KCRV. The results submitted are generally consistent with the KCRV within the estimated uncertainties. Finally, this comparison demonstrates that the analysis of nitrogen, argon, carbon dioxide and ethane in methane at amount fractions of 1 µmol/mol to 5 µmol/mol is generally possible with an uncertainty of 5% to 10%.
