T1 - Critical review of the current status of thickness measurements for ultrathin SiO2 on Si - Part V: Results of a CCQM pilot study N2 - Results are reported from a pilot study under the Consultative Committee for Amount of Substance (CCQM) to compare measurements of and resolve any relevant measurement issues in, the amount of thermal SiO2 oxide on (100) and (111) orientation Si wafer substrates in the thickness range 1.5 - 8 nm. As a result of the invitation to participate in this activity, 45 sets of measurements have been made in different laboratories using 10 analytical methods: medium-energy ion scattering spectrometry (MEIS), nuclear reaction analysis (NRA), RBS, elastic backscattering spectrometry (EBS), XPS, SIMS, ellipsometry, grazing-incidence x-ray reflectrometry (GIXRR), neutron reflectometry and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The measurements are made on separate sets of 10 carefully prepared samples, all of which have been characterised by a combination of ellipsometry and XPS using carefully established reference conditions and reference parameters. The results have been assessed against the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) data and all show excellent linearity. The remaining data sets correlate with the NPL data with average root-mean-square scatters of 0.15 nm, half being better than 0.1 nm and a few at or better than 0.05 nm. Each set of data allows a relative scaling constant and a zero thickness offset to be determined. Each method has an inherent zero thickness offset between 0 nm and 1 nm and it is these offsets, measured here for the first time, that have caused many problems in the past. There are three basic classes of offset: water and carbonadeous contamination equivalent to ~1 nm as seen by ellipsometry; adsorbed oxygen mainly from water at an equivalent thickness of 0.5 nm as seen by MEIS, NRA, RBS and possibly GIXRR; and no offset as seen by XPS using the Si 2p peaks. Each technique has a different uncertainty for the scaling constant and consistent results have been achieved. X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy has large uncertainties for the scaling constant but a high precision and, critically, if used correctly, has zero offset. Thus, a combination of XPS and the other methods allows the XPS scaling constant to be determined with low uncertainty, traceable via the other methods. XPS laboratories returning results early were invited to test a new reference procedure. All showed very significant improvements. The reference attenuation lengths thus need scaling by 0.986 ± 0.009 (at an expansion factor of 2) deduced from the data for the other methods. Several other methods have small offsets and, to the extent that these can be shown to be constant or measurable, then these methods will also show low uncertainty. Recommendations are provided for parameters for XPS, MEIS, RBS and NRA to improve their accuracy. Whereas these traces were soon identified as discoloured silver contacts along the cell edges or at micro cracks, the chemical and mechanistic reasons for this phenomenon have not yet been resolved in detail. In this work we show that silver nanoparticles accumulating within the encapsulation foil cause the brownish discolouration, and that certain additives of encapsulation and back sheet foils trigger the formation of these nanoparticles. T1 - Versailles Project on Advanced Materials and Standards Interlaboratory Study on Measuring the Thickness and Chemistry of Nanoparticle Coatings Using XPS and LEIS N2 - We report the results of a Versailles Project on Advanced Materials and Standards (VAMAS) interlaboratory study on the measurement of the shell thickness and chemistry of nanoparticle coatings. Peptide-coated gold particles were supplied to laboratories in two forms: a colloidal suspension in pure water and particles dried onto a silicon wafer. Participants prepared and analyzed these samples using either X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) or low energy ion scattering (LEIS). Careful data analysis revealed some significant sources of discrepancy, particularly for XPS. Degradation during transportation, storage, or sample preparation resulted in a variability in thickness of 53%. The calculation method chosen by XPS participants contributed a variability of 67%. However, variability of 12% was achieved for the samples deposited using a single method and by choosing photoelectron peaks that were not adversely affected by instrumental transmission effects. The study identified a need for more consistency in instrumental transmission functions and relative sensitivity factors since this contributed a variability of 33%. The results from the LEIS participants were more consistent, with variability of less than 10% in thickness, and this is mostly due to a common method of data analysis. The calculation was performed using a model developed for uniform, flat films, and some participants employed a correction factor to account for the sample geometry, which appears warranted based upon a simulation of LEIS data from one of the participants and comparison to the XPS results. The resulting amorphous and partly crystalline oxydydroxides AnOn(OH)4-2n·xH2O can usually be observed as colloids above the An(IV) solubility limit. The aging process of such colloids results in crystalline AnO2. The presence of carboxylates in the solution prevents the occurrence of such colloids by formation of polynuclear complexes through a competing reaction between hydrolysis and ligation. The majority of recently described carboxylates reveals a hexanuclear core of [An6(µ3-O)4(µ3-OH)4]12+ terminated by 12 carboxylate ligands. We found that the An(IV) carboxylate solution species remain often preserved in crystalline state. The An(IV) carboxylates show An–An distances which are ~ 0.03 Å shorter than the An–An distances in AnO2 like colloids. The difference in the distances could be used to identify such species in solution. T1 - Structure and stability range of a hexanuclear Th(IV)-glycine complex N2 - A hexanuclear Th(IV)–glycine complex was observed by Th L3-edge EXAFS measurements in an aqueous solution. Within the stability range of this complex the positively charged hexanuclear species [Th6(µ3-O)4(µ3-OH)4(H2O)6(Gly)6(HGly)6]6+ was preserved in a crystal with the composition [Th6(µ3-O)4(µ3-OH)4(H2O)6(Gly)6(HGly)6]·(NO3)3(ClO4)3(H2O)3. This complex appears as a result of a competing reaction between hydrolysis and ligation by glycine. At a pH value below the stability range of the hexanuclear complex, crystals with the composition [Th(H2O)3(HGly)3]·(ClO4)4H2O were obtained from the solution. Three water molecules in the thorium coordination sphere indicate that this complex occurs prior to the onset of Th(IV) hydrolysis. T1 - Influence of Nuclear Localization Sequences on the Intracellular Fate of Gold Nanoparticles N2 - Directing nanoparticles to the nucleus by attachment of nuclear localization sequences (NLS) is an aim in many applications. Gold nanoparticles modified with two different NLS were studied while crossing barriers of intact cells, including uptake, endosomal escape, and nuclear translocation. By imaging of the nanoparticles and by characterization of their molecular interactions with surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), it is shown that nuclear translocation strongly depends on the particular incubation conditions. After an 1 h of incubation followed by a 24 h chase time, 14 nm gold particles carrying an adenoviral NLS are localized in endosomes, in the cytoplasm, and in the nucleus of fibroblast cells. In contrast, the cells display no nanoparticles in the cytoplasm or nucleus when continuously incubated with the nanoparticles for 24 h. The ultrastructural and spectroscopic data indicate different processing of NLS-functionalized particles in endosomes compared to unmodified particles. NLS functionalized nanoparticles form larger intraendosomal aggregates than unmodified gold nanoparticles. SERS spectra of cells with NLS-functionalized gold nanoparticles contain bands assigned to DNA and were clearly different from those with unmodified gold nanoparticles. The different processing in the presence of an NLS is influenced by a continuous exposure of the cells to nanoparticles and an ongoing nanoparticle uptake. This is supported by mass-spectrometry-based quantification that indicates enhanced uptake of NLS-functionalized nanoparticles compared to unmodified particles under the same conditions. The results contribute to the optimization of nanoparticle analysis in cells in a variety of applications, e.g., in theranostics, biotechnology, and bioanalytics. The impact of the hetaryl substituents on the configurational isomerism of piperidones and their corresponding bispidones has been studied by NMR spectroscopy, revealing the exclusive appearance in the enol form for the piperidones in solution and the trans-configuration regarding the two pyridyl substituents, as well as the sole formation of the unsymmetric exo-endo isomers for the corresponding bispidones. Thus, the bispidones are preorganized ligands for building pentacoordinated complexes, confirmed by the preparation and characterization of the corresponding Cu(II) complexes. Of the di-pyridyl piperidones with benzimidazole and imidazole substituents, and of the Cu(II) complex of the benzimidazole-containing bispidone, Crystals have become available for the analysis by X-ray diffraction, showing that the piperidones form the enol tautomers also in the solid state. A1 - Unger, Wolfgang T1 - Determining the thickness and completeness of the shell of polymer core-shell nanoparticles by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, secondary ion mass spectrometry, and transmission scanning electron microscopy N2 - Core–shell nanoparticles (CSNPs) have become indispensable in various industrial applications. However, their real internal structure usually deviates from an ideal core–shell structure. To control how the particles perform with regard to their specific applications, characterization techniques are required that can distinguish an ideal from a nonideal morphology. In this work, we investigated poly(tetrafluoroethylene)–poly(methyl methacrylate) (PTFE–PMMA) and poly(tetrafluoroethylene)–polystyrene (PTFE–PS) polymer CSNPs with a constant core diameter (45 nm) but varying shell thicknesses (4–50 nm). As confirmed by transmission scanning electron microscopy (T-SEM), the shell completely covers the core for the PTFE–PMMA nanoparticles, while the encapsulation of the core by the shell material is incomplete for the PTFE–PS nanoparticles. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was applied to determine the shell thickness of the nanoparticles. The software SESSA v2.0 was used to analyze the intensities of the elastic peaks, and the QUASES software package was employed to evaluate the shape of the inelastic background in the XPS survey spectra. For the first time, nanoparticle shell thicknesses are presented, which are exclusively based on the analysis of the XPS inelastic background. Furthermore, principal component analysis (PCA)-assisted time-of-flight secondary-ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) of the PTFE–PS nanoparticle sample set revealed a systematic variation among the samples and, thus, confirmed the incomplete encapsulation of the core by the shell material. As opposed to that, no variation is observed in the PCA score plots of the PTFE–PMMA nanoparticle sample set. Consequently, the complete coverage of the core by the shell material is proved by ToF-SIMS with a certainty that cannot be achieved by XPS and T-SEM. The investigation of reduced poisoning of hydrogen sensors by H2S is presented in the alloy system PdxNiyCo1-x-y. A new method in high throughput screening of alloys is applied. Not singular sample compositions but a continuous gradient in alloy concentrations was produced on a semiconductor sample. A laser scanning system produces a photo current in the semiconductor to map the sensor signal and provide a quasi continuous alloy characterization. The new system is therefore called Continuous Gradient—High Throughput Screening Macroscope (CG-HTSM). Typically 625 alloys are characterized in 15 minutes. The resolution of our set-up allows distinguishing 100.000 alloy compositions. Electron probe micro-analysis, focused ion beam technique and analytical transmission electron microscopy were applied to reveal and identify grain boundary precipitates and the γ–γ'-microstructure. The distribution of borides along grain boundaries was evaluated statistically by quantitative metallography. The following features could be correlated with an increase of cracking susceptibility: i) Increasing grain size, ii) increasing fraction of grain boundaries with densely spaced borides, iii) lack of secondary γ'-particles in matrix channels between the coarse cuboidal γ'-precipitates. The latter feature seems to be responsible for linking-up of cracked grain boundary precipitates which occurred as an additional cracking mechanism after one heat treatment, whereas decohesion at the boride-matrix-interface in the heat affected zone of laser-drilled holes was observed for both heat treatments. Rhenium(III) mixed-ligand complexes with tetradentate/monodentate ('4 + 1') coordination of the general formula [Re(NS3)(PRR'R' ')] (NS3 = tris(2-mercaptoethyl)amine and derivatives thereof, PRR'R' ' = phosphorus(III) ligands) appear to be among the promising tools to achieve this goal. According to this approach, we synthesized and characterized a series of rhenium model complexes. In vitro stabilities of the corresponding rhenium-188 complexes were determined by incubating 2-3 MBq or alternatively 37 MBq of the complexes in phosphate buffer, human plasma, and rat plasma, respectively, at 22° C or 37° C, followed by checking the amount of 188ReO4- formed after 1 h, 24, and 48 h by thin-layer chromatography. The rate of perrhenate formation varied over a wide range, depending primarily on the nature of the phosphorus(III) ligand. Physicochemical parameters of the corresponding nonradioactive rhenium complexes were analyzed in detail to find out the factors influencing their different stability and furthermore to design new substitution-inert '4 + 1' complexes. Tolman's cone angle of phosphorus(III) ligands and the lipophilic character of the inner coordination sphere were found to be crucial factors to build up stable rhenium '4 + 1' complexes. T1 - Crystal structure and solution species of Ce(III) and Ce(IV) formates: From mononuclear to hexanuclear complexes N2 - Cerium(III) and cerium(IV) both form formate complexes. However, their species in aqueous solution and the solid-state structures are surprisingly different. The species in aqueous solutions were investigated with Ce K-edge EXAFS spectroscopy. Ce(III) formate shows only mononuclear complexes, which is in agreement with the predicted mononuclear species of Ce(HCOO)2+ and Ce(HCOO)2+. In contrast, Ce(IV) formate forms in aqueous solution a stable hexanuclear complex of [Ce6(µ3-O)4(µ3-OH)4(HCOO)x(NO3)y]12–x-y. The structural differences reflect the different influence of hydrolysis, which is weak for Ce(III) and strong for Ce(IV). Hydrolysis of Ce(IV) ions causes initial polymerization while complexation through HCOO– results in 12 chelate rings stabilizing the hexanuclear Ce(IV) complex. Crystals were grown from the above-mentioned solutions. Two crystal structures of Ce(IV) formate were determined. Both form a hexanuclear complex with a [Ce6(µ3-O)4(µ3-OH)4]12+ core in aqueous HNO3/HCOOH solution. The pH titration with NaOH resulted in a structure with the composition [Ce6(µ3-O)4(µ3-OH)4(HCOO)10(NO3)2(H2O)3]·(H2O)9.5, while the pH adjustment with NH3 resulted in [Ce6(µ3-O)4(µ3-OH)4(HCOO)10(NO3)4]·(NO3)3(NH4)5(H2O)5. Furthermore, the crystal structure of Ce(III) formate, Ce(HCOO)3, was determined. The coordination polyhedron is a tricapped trigonal prism which is formed exclusively by nine HCOO– ligands. The hexanuclear Ce(IV) formate species from aqueous solution is widely preserved in the crystal structure, whereas the mononuclear solution species of Ce(III) formate undergoes a polymerization during the crystallization process. T1 - Progress in the measurement of the cyclic R-curve and its application to fatigue assessment N2 - The cyclic R-curve describes the resistance of a material to fatigue crack propagation fromthe short to the long crack regimes and it is therefore an essential ingredient in any fracturemechanics-based fatigue assessment procedure. This work presents different testing proceduresemployed in the experimental determination of the cyclic R-curve, especially focusing onthe comparison with long fatigue crack propagation thresholds obtained by means of thecompression precracking load reduction (CPLR) procedure. The tests were performed on theEA4T steel considering different stress ratios. The results show a good reproducibility of thecyclic R-curves at every stress ratio and for any testing procedure. In addition, the cyclicR-curves were used in a fracture mechanics-based assessment to predict the fatigue limits ofspecimens containing micro-notches. TiO2 films fabricated by two different synthetic procedures as representative for two main large-scale applications were selected: (i) pulsed d.c. magnetron sputtering for photocatalytic applications and (ii) screen printing from preformed anatase nanoparticles. The screen-printed films were further loaded with a sensitizing dye for application as a dye-sensitized solar cell. Film properties such as microstructure and crystallographic texture of pulsed d.c. magnetron sputtering synthesized films were systematically studied by means of scanning nanobeam electron diffraction in a transmission electron microscope and the surface and inner morphology by scanning electron microscopy. The dye distribution over the depth of screen-printed TiO2 layers was analyzed before and after dye-loading by means of energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy at scanning electronmicroscope, Auger electron spectroscopy and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry. T1 - Bispidines for dual imaging N2 - The efficient transformation of the hexadentate bispidinol 1 into carbamate derivatives yields functional bispidines enabling convenient functionalization for targeted imaging. The BODIPY-substituted bispidine 3 combines a coordination site for metal ions, such as radioactive 64CuII, with a fluorescent unit. Product 3 was thoroughly characterized by standard analytical methods, single crystal X-ray diffraction, radiolabeling, and photophysical analysis. The luminescence of ligand 3 was found to be strongly dependent on metal ion coordination: CuII quenches the BODIPY fluorescence, whereas NiII and ZnII ions do not affect it. It follows that, in imaging applications with the positron emitter 64CuII, residues of its origin from enriched 64Ni and the decay products 64NiII and 64ZnII, efficiently restore the fluorescence of the ligand. This allows for monitoring of the emitted radiation as well as the fluorescence signal. The stability of the 64CuII–3 complex is investigated by transmetalation experiments with ZnII and NiII, using fluorescence and radioactivity detection, and the results confirm the high stability of 64CuII–3. In addition, metal complexes of ligand 3 with the lanthanide ions TbIII, EuIII, and NdIII are shown to exhibit emission of the BODIPY ligand and the lanthanide ion, thus enabling dual emission detection. A1 - Trepte, S. T1 - Analyse von Reibschichten auf Bremsbelägen N2 - Die volle Leistung einer auf Reibung basierenden Bremse wird erst nach einem Einlaufvorgang erreicht. Dieser ist notwendig, um auf Belag und Scheibe eine sogenannte Reibschicht aufzubauen. Da diese Zwischenschicht das Reibungsverhalten des Systems maßgeblich bestimmt, ist es wichtig, sich Klarheit über ihre chemische Zusammensetzung, Mikrostruktur und die daraus resultierenden Eigenschaften zu verschaffen. Als Basismaterial diente ein phenolharzgebundener Belag Jurid 57-62, der mit verschiedenen Parametern (Flächenpressung und Umdrehungsgeschwindigkeit) gegen eine Stahlscheibe getestet wurde. Es wurden Dauerbremsungen von jeweils einer Stunde bzw. bis zu einem maximalen Belagverschleiß von 1 mm simuliert, wobei die Entwicklung der Reibzahl und die Oberflächentemperatur der Scheibe registriert wurde. Zur Analyse der Reibschichten auf dem Bremsbelag wurden mehrere Methoden parallel angewandt. So wurden Verschleißpartikel, die aus der Reibschicht stammen, gesammelt bzw. abgekratzt und nach Dispergieren auf Kohlefolien direkt im Transmissionselektronenmikros-kop (TEM) untersucht. Ferner wurden von einigen ausgesuchten Belagproben Mikrotom-schnitte sowie dünne Querschnittsfolien für die TEM-Untersuchung präpariert, um den Verbund Reibschicht-Grundmaterial darstellen zu können. Als Ergänzung wurden ferner oberflächenmorphologische und –analytische Verfahren wie REM/EDX und ESCA eingesetzt. Die Ergebnisse deuten darauf hin, dass die Reibschicht nanokristallin ist, und dass fast alle anorganischen Bestandteile des Bremsbelags sowie Eisenoxid von der Bremsscheibe in sehr fein verteilter Form vorliegen. Bei Belägen ohne Metallanteil bildet eine Barium-Eisen-Sulfatphase offenbar die Grundstruktur der Reibschicht, während auf eisenhaltigen Belägen Eisenoxid dominierend ist. Die nanokristalline Mikrostruktur entsteht, ähnlich wie beim mechanischen Legieren, durch einen Mahlvorgang von Verschleißpartikeln zwischen den Reibpartnern. Bei Überlastung des Belags tritt Zersetzung der Polymer-Bindephase ein, was zu einem raschen Anstieg der Verschleißrate führt. To preserve the lipid content and the heterogeneous structure of osseous tissue, 4 μm thick human bone sections were prepared via cryoembedding and tape-assisted cryosectioning, circumventing the application of organic solvents and a decalcification step. A protocol for comparative mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) on the same section was established for initial analysis with time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) at a lateral resolution of 10 μm to <500 nm, followed by atmospheric pressure scanning microprobe matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (AP-SMALDI) Orbitrap MSI at a lateral resolution of 10 μm. This procedure ultimately enabled MSI of lipids, providing the lateral localization of major lipid classes such as glycero-, glycerophospho-, and sphingolipids. Additionally, the applicability of the recently emerged Orbitrap-TOF-SIMS hybrid system was exemplarily examined and compared to the before-mentioned MSI methods. Despite intensive study during the last 100 years, synthesis and crystal structures of rhodium(III) complexes were described only briefly. Some [RhClx(NH3)6-x] compounds are still unknown. In this study, available information about synthetic protocols and the crystal structures of possible [RhClx(NH3)6−x] octahedral species are summarized and critically analyzed. Unknown crystal structuresof(NH4)2[Rh(NH3)Cl5],trans–[Rh(NH3)4Cl2]Cl·H2O,andcis–[Rh(NH3)4Cl2]Clarereported based on high quality single crystal X-ray diffraction data. The crystal structure of [Rh(NH3)5Cl]Cl2 was redetermined. A significant proportion of engineered nanoparticle systems consist of some form of nominally core-shell structure, whether by design or unintentionally. Often, these do not form an ideal core-shell structure, with typical deviations including polydispersity of the core or shell, uneven or incomplete shells, noncentral cores, and others. Such systems may be created with or without intent, and in either case an understanding of the conditions for formation of such particles is desirable. Precise determination of the structure, composition, size, and shell thickness of such particles can prove challenging without the use of a suitable range of characterization techniques. Here, the authors present two such polymer core-shell nanoparticle systems, consisting of polytetrafluoroethylene cores coated with a range of thicknesses of either polymethylmethacrylate or polystyrene. By consideration of surface energy, it is shown that these particles are expected to possess distinctly differing coating structures, with the polystyrene coating being incomplete. A comprehensive characterization of these systems is demonstrated, using a selection of complementary techniques including scanning electron microscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, dynamic light scattering, differential centrifugal sedimentation, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. By combining the results provided by these techniques, it is possible to achieve superior characterization and understanding of the particle structure than could be obtained by considering results separately. Transmission electron microscopy was used in this interlaboratory comparison (ILC) to measure primary crystallite size and shape distributions for a commercial aggregated titania powder. Data of four size descriptors and two shape descriptors were evaluated across nine laboratories. Data repeatability and reproducibility was evaluated by analysis of variance. One-third of the laboratory pairs had similar size descriptor data, but 83% of the pairs had similar aspect ratio data. Scale descriptor distributions were generally unimodal and were well-described by lognormal reference models. Shape descriptor distributions were multi-modal but data visualization plots demonstrated that the Weibull distribution was preferred to the normal distribution. For the equivalent circular diameter size descriptor, measurement uncertainties of the lognormal distribution scale and width parameters were 9.5% and 22%, respectively. For the aspect ratio shape descriptor, the measurement uncertainties of the Weibull distribution scale and width parameters were 7.0% and 26%, respectively. Both measurement uncertainty estimates and data visualizations should be used to analyze size and shape distributions of particles on the nanoscale. Zr K-edge EXAFS spectra show that a stepwise increase of acetic acid in aqueous solution with 0.1 M Zr(IV) leads to a structural rearrangement from initial tetranuclear hydrolysis species [Zr4(OH)8(OH2)16]8+ to a hexanuclear acetate species Zr6(O)4(OH)4(CH3COO)12. The solution species Zr6(O)4(OH)4(CH3COO)12 was preserved in crystals by slow evaporation of the aqueous solution. Single-crystal diffraction reveals an uncharged hexanuclear cluster in solid Zr6(μ3-O)4(μ3-OH)4(CH3COO)12·8.5H2O. In the brain, the P2Y1 receptor (P2Y1R) subtype mediates trophic functions like differentiation and proliferation, and modulates fast synaptic transmission, both suggested to be affected in diseases of the central nervous system. Research on P2Y1R is limited because suitable brain-penetrating P2Y1R-selective tracers are not yet available. Here, we describe the first efforts to develop an 18F-labeled PET tracer based on the structure of the highly affine and selective, non-nucleotidic P2Y1R allosteric modulator 1-(2-[2-(tert-butyl)phenoxy]pyridin-3-yl)-3- [4-(trifluoromethoxy)phenyl]urea (7). A small series of fluorinated compounds was developed by systematic modification of the p-(trifluoromethoxy)phenyl, the urea and the 2-pyridyl subunits of the lead compound 7. Additionally, the p-(trifluoromethoxy)phenyl subunit was substituted by carborane, a boron-rich cluster with potential applicability in boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT). By functional assays, the new fluorinated derivative 1-{2-[2-(tert-butyl)phenoxy]pyridin-3-yl}-3-[4-(2-fluoroethyl) phenyl]urea (18) was identified with a high P2Y1R antagonistic potency (IC50 ¼10 nM). Compound [18F] 18 was radiosynthesized by using tetra-n-butyl ammonium [18F]fluoride with high radiochemical purity, radiochemical yield and molar activities. Investigation of brain homogenates using hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) revealed [18F]fluoride as major radiometabolite. Although [18F]18 showed fast in vivo metabolization, the high potency and unique allosteric binding mode makes this class of compounds interesting for further optimizations and investigation of the theranostic potential as PET tracer and BNCT agent. In two separate fluorination steps for core and shell formation, the corresponding metal lactates are reacted with anhydrous HF in ethylene glycol. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) confirm the formation of particles with mean dimensions between 6.4 and 11.5 nm. The overall chemical composition of the particles during the different reaction steps is monitored by quantitative Al Kα excitation X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Here, the formation of stoichiometric metal fluorides (MF2) is confirmed, both for the core and the final core–shell particles. Furthermore, an in-depth analysis by synchrotron radiation XPS (SR-XPS) with tunable excitation energy is performed to confirm the core–Shell character of the nanoparticles. Additionally, Ca2p/Sr3d XPS intensity ratio in-Depth profiles are simulated using the software Simulation of Electron Spectra for Surface Analysis (SESSA). In principle, core–shell like particle morphologies are formed but without a sharp interface between calcium and strontium containing phases. Surprisingly, the in-depth chemical distribution of the two types of nanoparticles is equal within the error of the experiment. Both comprise a SrF2-rich core domain and CaF2-rich shell domain with an intermixing zone between them. Consequently, the internal morphology of the final nanoparticles seems to be independent from the synthesis chronology. A comparative study is carried out on the high strength steel S960QL considering different single edge notch bend (SENB) specimen geometries. On one hand, the reference dimensions of 6 mm thickness (B) and 19 mm width (W) are analysed and referred to as conventional specimens. On the other hand, small-scale specimens with B = 3 mm and W = 4 and 6 mm are also considered. Several loading configurations (3-, 4- and 8-point bending) are used and a load ratio R = 0.8 is applied to avoid crack closure effects. The direct current potential drop (DCPD) technique is used to monitor the crack length. The reduced dimensions of the small-scale specimens imply the necessity of implementing a modified testing procedure compared to the recommendations of current standards for the generation of FCGR data. The results show a good agreement between tests conducted on different specimen sizes, which opens new perspectives in the use of small-scale specimens for characterizing the fatigue crack growth properties in metallic materials. In this set of experiments, 29 new analogues were synthesized according to the “4 + 1” mixed ligand approach with some specific differences. Conventional “4 + 1” 99mTc-fatty acids are built in the sequence: Tc-chelate, alkyl chain, and carboxylic group. We developed compounds following a new design with the sequence: carboxylic group, alkyl chain, Tc-chelate, and lipophilic tail. Therefore, the 99mTc-chelate was transferred to a more central position of the compound, aiming toward an improved myocardial profile and an accelerated liver clearance. In this context, several functional groups incorporated in the lipophilic tail section were tested to evaluate their influence on the compound's character. In addition to biodistribution studies in vivo, the myocardial first-pass extraction of the compounds was tested in an isolated Langendorff rat heart model. A satisfactory myocardial uptake of up to 20% of the injected dose (% ID) in the perfused heart and a fast liver clearance in vivo with only 0.29% ID/g at 60 min postinjection demonstrate that the induced molecular modifications affect the kinetics of 99mTc-radiolabeled fatty acid compounds favorably. From the data set, rules for estimating the biodistribution of fatty acids tracers are deduced. In an earlier paper the uniform procedure according to the BAM guideline for determining long-term water flow capacity was described, and the structural stability of drain cores under creep was investigated. The extrapolation of creep curves is permissible only when it can be shown, over the extrapolated period (at least 100 years), that oxidative aging does not invoke any relevant changes in the polyolefin material. This can be shown by measuring antioxidant depletion and mechanical degradation of the drain cores and filter/protection geotextiles in oven aging and water immersion tests. In this paper the results of such aging studies on three different GCD products are reported. Degradation of the tensile strength of HALS-stabilized polypropylene needle-punched nonwoven geotextiles (PP NWGTs) starts right from the beginning of the oven aging. This has to be taken into account for lifetime predictions based on residual tensile strength. The rate of oxidative degradation of NWGTs decreases significantly with increasing mass per area. Therefore the expected service life sets a limit on acceptable geotextile grammage. Antioxidant depletion in the drain cores, which are made of relatively thick PP strands or HDPE ribs, is about an order of magnitude slower than in filter and protection NWGTs, which are made of thin fibers. Service life values in excess of 100 years may be obtained for the products when the geotextiles and drain cores are properly stabilized and designed. The characteristic size of the considered region is 1.5 ?m. The following contact situation is simulated: steel fiber coated by an iron oxide film as the brake pad and pearlitic steel also coated by an iron oxide layer as the disc. On the assumption of oxide layer wearing we simulate the iron oxide - iron oxide, iron oxide - metal and metal - metal contacts. The calculation results for the friction coefficient for various contact situations give quite adequate values. For example, for the oxide - oxide system the calculated coefficient is approximately equal to 0.4, while for the metal - metal contact the obtained value varies from 0.7 to 0.9. Analysis of a set of the obtained results allows concluding that oxide is formed more rapidly than the sliding layer, which in turn makes the friction coefficient value stabilized.
