While both of these alloys are good glass formers, there is a difference in their glass-forming abilities (Zr41.5Ti41.5Ni17 > Zr69.5Cu12Ni11Al7.5). This difference is explained by inciting the relative importance of strong chemical order, icosahedral content, cluster symmetry and configuration diversity. The method uses the diagnosing power of complex electrical resistivity in a frequency range between 1 mHz and 1 kHz. In our study, the potential of this method has been explored for the investigation of wood. We observed remarkable differences in the resulting spectra of complex resistivity for different European and Tropical tree species. The data processing of the acquired low-frequency impedance spectra yields integrating parameters. The comparison of the integrating parameters with the mean pore diameter that has been separately determined for the tropical tree species indicates clear correlations. An additional investigation has revealed remarkable difference in the complex resistivity spectra between oil bearing and non-oil bearing sandal wood. This result and the relations between electrical parameters and structural parameters of wood indicate the prospective potential of low-frequency impedance spectroscopy. T1 - Electrochemical investigations regarding the influence of deformation-induced martensite on the corrosion behaviour of austenitic stainless steels N2 - Contents of deformation-induced martensite in the lattice structure of austenitic stainless steels lead to an either beneficial or detrimental change of mechanical and magnetic properties depending on the prospective application. Whereas these changes are well-known and investigated widely the influence of deformation-induced martensite on the corrosion behaviour is frequently an issue of scientific discussions. There are opposing opinions that depend on the type of corrosion mechanism being investigated for example regarding pitting corrosion resistance in Chloride containing media. In it is stated that pitting resistance is not influenced by deformationinduced martensite while in it is discussed that more pitting occurs on martensitic structure. The same conflictive opinions appear regarding active dissolution in acidic media or intergranular corrosion. In addition, when having deeper insight into literature it can be concluded that even the type of test method, i. e. dynamic or static testing, has a big influence on the obtained results concerning the influence of martensite in austenitic stainless steels. A1 - Schartel, Bernhard T1 - Bubbles and collapses: Fire phenomena of flame-retarded flexible polyurethane foams N2 - Flexible polyurethane foams (FPUF) are easy to ignite and exhibit rapid flame spread. In this paper, the fire phenomena of two standard foam formulations containing tris (1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (FR-2) and a halogen-freepoly (ethyl ethylene phosphate) (PNX), respectively, as flame retardants are compared. A multimethodological approach is proposed which combines standard fire tests as well as new investigatory approaches. The thermophysical properties of the foams were determined by thermogravimetric analysis (TG), reaction to small flames was studied by means of the limiting oxygen index (LOI) and UL 94 HBF test, and the burning behavior was investigated with the cone calorimeter. Further, temperature development in burning cone calorimeter samples was monitored using thermocouples, and rheological measurements were performed on pyrolyzed material, delivering insight into the dripping behavior of the foams. This paper gives comprehensive insight into the fire phenomena of flame-retarded FPUFs that are driven by the two-step decomposition behavior of the foams. LOI and UL 94 HBF tests showed a reduced flammability and reduced tendency to drip for the flame-retarded foams. TG and cone calorimeter measurements revealed that the two-step decomposition behavior causes two stages during combustion, namely structural collapse and pool fire. The flame-retardant mode of action was identified to take place primarily during the foam collapse and be based mainly on flame inhibition. However, some condensed-phase action was been measured, leading to significantly increased melt viscosity and improved dripping behavior for foams containing PNX. T1 - Flexible and reusable parylene C mask technology for applications in cascade impactor air quality monitoring systems N2 - The development of traceable new methodologies to quantify elemental air pollutants in particulate matter (PM) supports modernization of methods used in air quality monitoring networks in Europe. In the framework of the EURAMET EMPIR AEROMET II project, the combination of cascade impactor aerosol sampling and total reflection X-ray fluorescence elemental spectroscopy (TXRF) was investigated. This technique requires a traceable calibration based on reference samples. This paper describes a new, simple and effective method to produce such reference samples using flexible, reusable, and low-cost parylene C shadow masks, fabricated by photolithographic steps. These shadow masks can be used to produce reference samples that mimic the Dekati cascade impactor’s deposition patterns by applying as-prepared micro stencils to 30 mm acrylic substrates and evaporating a reference material (Ti) in arrangements of thin circular dots. The highly flexible direct patterning of acrylic discs with reference material, otherwise impossible with conventional photolithography, allows multiple reusing of the same micro stencils. The aspect ratios of the dots could be repeated with an error less than 4 %. A first set of standard reference samples for the 13 stages of the Dekati cascade impactor was produced and preliminary TXRF measurements of the deposited Ti masses were performed. The centricity of the deposition patterns turned out to be an important parameter for the quality of the TXRF results. The parylene mask technology for the production of reference samples turns out to be a promising new approach for the traceable calibration of TXRF spectrometers for the quantification of element concentrations in environmental aerosol samples but, due to its great versatility, it could be used for several other micropatterning applications on conventional and unconventional substrates. Electrochemical methods support the processes of development to a great extent and help to understand mechanisms of action and failure. They are usually carried out on applied coating systems with a completed formulation. An examination possibility is presented in this publication that enables the characterization of waterbased coatings with different formulation variations in the liquid (aqueous) state with the aid of electrochemical noise technique. Thus, selection of binders, pigments, and other additives is supported essentially and made more efficient in a very early Phase of formulation development. The paper shows that a unique insight into the dynamic processes of a metal in contact with an aqueous coating dispersion is possible using the example of the development of zinc-free corrosion-inhibiting pigments for waterbased coatings. The interest in these fungi and their melanins lies in the formation of black stains on the walls and rock art which threatens the integrity of the paintings. Here we report solid-state cross polarization magic-angle spinning 13C and 15N nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) of the melanins extracted from the mycelia of O. lascauxensis and O. anomala in order to known their chemical structure. The melanins from these two species were compared with those from other fungi. The melanins from the Ochroconis species have similar SERS and 13C and 15N NMR spectra. Their chemical structures as suggested by the data are not related to 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine, 5,6-dihydroxyindole or 1,8-dihydroxynaphthalene precursors and likely the building blocks from the melanins have to be based on other phenols that react with the N-terminal amino acid of proteins. The analytical pyrolysis of the acid hydrolysed melanin from O. lascauxensis supports this assumption. T1 - Impact of the combined use of layered double hydroxides, lignin and phosphorous polyol on the fire behavior of flexible polyurethane foams N2 - Flexible polyurethane foams with densities of 40 ± 2 kg m−3 were prepared by combining different ecofriendly fillers such as layered double hydroxides (LDH) and kraft lignin (a byproduct of the pulp and paper industry) with a phosphorous polyol (E560) in order to study their effect on the mechanical performance and fire behavior of the foams. Two series of foams were prepared, some containing lignin or LDH separately, and some with a combination of both: one of the series was prepared without E560 (0E foam series) and the other with 5 parts per hundred of E560 polyol (5E series). The use of fillers resulted in increased viscosity of the reactive mixture, requiring higher blowing agent content in order to hold the density of the foams constant. It was observed that urea phase segregation was favored in the series of 0E foams due to their lower viscosity than the 5E series. This had consequent effects on the resilience, compression force deflection and compression set of these foams. In terms of fire behavior it was observed that while the limiting oxygen index decreased, cone calorimeter results showed that the combination of lignin, LDH and E560 decreased the heat release of the foams. In addition, the combination of fillers and E560 contributed to increase the viscosity of the pyrolysis products, preventing the dripping of the molten polymer, which is a key factor in flame propagation towards adjacent objects in fire scenarios. Im Rahmen der praktischen Anwendung konnten unter Verwendung der vorgestellten Verfahren an einem Spannglied die Lage eines Hüllrohrverstopfers lokalisiert und die Ausdehnung der Blockadestelle eingegrenzt werden.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Investigation of prestressed concrete using the imaging ultrasonic echo method – Application of phase evaluation for the distinction of reflectors: The application of ultrasound methods for the non-destructive assessment of pre-stressed concrete members is one of the biggest challenges in the field of non-destructive testing in civil engineering. The inhomogeneous composition of concrete, reinforcement and tendons, which itself consist of ducts, steel wires and grouting material, requires an optimisation of measuring technique and analysis software to gain reliable information about the grouting condition of the ducts. This article describes the fundamentals of the visualisation of ultrasound echo data, the investigation and data analysis at specimen and a case study. Here especially the phase evaluation proves to be very useful for the distinction of reflectors. The basic principle is explained and parts of an interactive software module, which is based on the SAFT method, is presented. With this software it is possible to calculate, analyse and visualise 2D and 3D reconstructions of large ultrasound data sets with conventional PCs or mobile computers. Data has been analysed, which were recorded with automatic measurement systems at small scale laboratory specimens and a large scale testing wall. In the frame of the practical application it was possible to localise the position and extent of a blockade within a duct. A1 - Elkin, V T1 - Large aperture ultrasonic system for testing thick concrete structures N2 - A Large Aperture UltraSonic system (LAUS) has been designed and built for testing thick concrete structures. The scalable system consists of twelve ultrasonic units, each hosting 32 individual shear wave transducers with mechanical dry point contact (DPC) to the concrete surface. The twelve units are attached to the concrete surface using a vacuum case which holds them in place during operation. Each LAUS unit can be placed individually on the surface to achieve optimal ultrasonic condition, e.g. to avoid rebars. For the generation of vacuum, air pressure is supplied to each unit through an air hose. The twelve units define an aperture which is necessary for fast reconstruction of the subsurface structure. The well-known SAFT (Synthetic Aperture Focusing Technique) algorithm has been adopted to this situation, where the individual LAUS units form a linear aperture with not necessarily equidistant spacing between the units. The exact geometrical position of the units, which are individually marked with retroreflective labels, is determined using photographs and image processing. All transducers are synchronized and work either as transmitter or receiver. A full scan consists of 12 * 11 recordings, where each unit acts as transmitter once and all others as receivers. An electronic sub-unit on the back of the ultrasonic device holds the battery and handles data acquisition, synchronization and data communication. A computer is used as base unit which communicates with each LAUS unit for control and data acquisition, the synchronization is performed by a radio modem that uses a special algorithm similar to a digital PLL (phase locked loop). No wire connections are necessary between the units and the base system. The LAUS system is designed to investigate concrete structures with thicknesses in excess of 2 m, depending on the acoustic condition of the object under investigation. Highly reinforced concrete may have less penetration depth. The LAUS provides quasi real time imaging, once the transducers are put in place and the data has been acquired. First measurements on a foundation slab confirm, that the system can register ultrasonic echoes from the back wall at 4 m distance. T1 - The crystal structure of (Nb0.75Cu0.25)Sn-2 in the Cu-Nb-Sn system N2 - During the processing of superconducting Nb3Sn wire, several intermediate intermetallic phases including a previously encountered Cu-Nb-Sn phase show up. The yet unknown crystal structure of this phase is now identified by a combination of different experimental techniques and database search to be of the hexagonal NiMg2 type with a proposed composition of about (Nb0.75Cu0.25)Sn2. The structure determination started from an evaluation of the lattice parameters from EBSD Kikuchi patterns from quenched material suggesting hexagonal or orthorhombic symmetry. A database search then led to the hexagonal NiMg2 type structure, the presence of which was confirmed by a Rietveld analysis on the basis of high energy synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data. Assuming a partial substitution of Nb in orthorhombic NbSn2 by Cu, the change of the valence electron concentration provokes a structural transformation from the CuMg2 type for NbSn2 to the NiMg2 type for (Nb0.75Cu0.25)Sn2. In the previous literature the (Nb0.75Cu0.25)Sn2 phase described here has occasionally been referred to as Nausite. T1 - Submarine venting of magmatic volatiles in the Eastern Manus Basin, Papua New Guinea N2 - The SuSu Knolls and DESMOS hydrothermal fields are located in the back-arc extensional transform zone of the Eastern Manus Basin. In 2006, highly acidic and ΣSO4-rich vent fluids were collected at both sites and analyzed for the chemical and isotopic composition of major and trace species. Fluids exiting the seafloor have measured temperatures from 48 to 215 °C and are milky white in appearance due to precipitation of elemental S0. Vent fluid concentrations of Na, K, and Mg are depleted by as much as 30% relative to seawater, but have the same relative abundance. In contrast, the fluids are highly enriched in dissolved ΣCO2, Cl, SiO2(aq), Fe, and Al relative to seawater. Measured pH (25 °C) ranged from 0.95 to 1.87 and aqueous ΣSO4 ranged from 35 to 135 mmol/kg. The chemical and isotopic composition points to formation via subsurface mixing of seawater with a Na-, K-, Mg-, and Ca-free, volatile-rich magmatic fluid exsolved from subsurface magma bodies during a process analogous to subaerial fumarole discharge. Estimates of the magmatic end-member composition indicate a fluid phase where H2O > SO2 > CO2 ≈ Cl > F. The hydrogen and oxygen isotopic composition of H2O and carbon isotopic composition of ΣCO2 in the vent fluids strongly suggest a contribution of slab-derived H2O and CO2 to melts generated in the mantle beneath the Eastern Manus volcanic zone. Abundant magmatically-derived SO2 undergoes disproportionation during cooling in upflow zones and contributes abundant acidity, SO42-, and S0 to the venting fluids. Interaction of these highly acidic fluids with highly altered mineral assemblages in the upflow zone are responsible for extensive aqueous mobilization of SiO2(aq), Fe, and Al. Temporal variability in the speciation and abundance of aqueous S species between 1995 and 2006 at the DESMOS vent field suggests an increase in the relative abundance of SO2 in the magmatic end-member that has mixed with seawater in the subsurface. Results of this study constrain processes responsible for the formation of hot-spring fluids in magmatically active back-arc environments and the resulting chemical exchange between the lithosphere and water column.
