T1 - Tribological performance of metal-reinforced ceramic composites selectively structured with femtosecond laser-induced periodic surface structures N2 - The impact of femtosecond (fs) laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) on tribological properties was investigated for metal-reinforced ceramic composites (Al2O3-ZrO2-Nb). For this purpose, the metallic niobium (Nb) phase was selectively structured with LIPSS in an air environment with different values of the fs-laser peak fluence by near-infrared fs-laser radiation (λ = 1025 nm, τ = 300 fs, frep = 1 kHz), taking advantage of the different light absorption behavior of ceramic and metal. The tribological performance was evaluated by reciprocating sliding tests in a ball-on-disc configuration using Ringer's solution as lubricant. The surfaces were characterized before and after laser irradiation by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and by measuring the contact angle with Ringer's solution. The LIPSS formation resulted in an increased wetting of the surface with the lubricant. Moreover, the selectively structured composite surfaces revealed a coefficient of friction significantly reduced by a factor of ~3 when compared to the non-irradiated surface. Furthermore, the formation of a laser-induced oxidation layer was detected with NbO as the most prominent oxidation state. Selectively structured composites with outstanding mechanical properties and enhanced tribological performance are of particular interest for biomedical applications. T1 - Novel lightweight aggregates from masonry rubble N2 - Most lightweight aggregates (LWA) are produced by thermal Treatment of natural raw materials such as clay and shale. In addition to the high energy costs thereby incurred, the availability of suitable raw materials is limited. Other LWA manufactured from industrial by-products and wastes do not always meet the quality criteria for use in high-Quality lightweight concrete. A real alternative is the use of novel lightweight aggregates (referred to as LWA, aggregates and granules) made from mineral construction and demolition waste. An appropriate manufacturing technology has recently been developed in the framework of a German research project /1, 2/. Masonry rubble of variable grain size containing different amounts of brick material (25 to 70 %) serves as raw material. The LWA are obtained in a multistage manufacturing process by a thermal or hydrothermal treatment, which causes the expansion and the hardening of the material. The novel LWA meet the acceptance criteria for conventional lightweight aggregates. They are suitable for the production of lightweight concrete /2-6/. However to create tailor-made LWA from masonry rubble, the novel expanded materials and the influence of manufacturing conditions have to be understood in more detail. This paper reports on ongoing investigations of the chemico-mineralogical composition and microstructure of the novel LWA and focuses on the results of Chemical analyses, XRD, ESEM, TG/DTA and fusibility tests. T1 - Dissolution and reprecipitation of silver in sintering silver-glass dispersions N2 - Electric contacts based on silver-glass dispersions are key components in optoelectronic microsystems and control modules for medical, information & communication and energy technology in our networked society. Driven by the complexity of modern production processes and ever shorter time-to-market requirements, the fast and specific development of tailored silver-glass dispersions has become a bottleneck of technology development. Nevertheless, the underlying mechanisms of silver dissolution, transport, and reprecipitation, and the resulting micro structure evolution during firing are poorly understood. The broad literature on the precipitation of colloidal silver particles and the related processes of silver dissolution and diffusion mostly refer to very small volume fractions of silver. Transferring these results to the sintering of glass-containing silver dispersions, is therefore highly questionable. In this case, silver dissolution, electrical contact between silver particles, transport and reprecipitation take place under special conditions. This includes short diffusion lengths (particle size < 10 μm), the presence of three-phase contacts silver - glass - sintering atmosphere, as well as silver reprecipitation at the sintering contacts as the driving force of silver transport. Here, a dynamic balance of the silver concentration can be expected to result from the ratio between silver dissolution and reprecipitation. The aim of the project is to gain basic insight into the mechanisms of dissolution, transport and reprecipitation of silver in sintering silver glass dispersions. In this context, the main focus is on gaining basic knowledge about the dissolution of metallic silver in low melting oxide glasses as the limiting factor of the sintering of silver-glass composites. In particular, we will strive to gain insight into the effect of the oxygen content of the sintering atmosphere, of the oxygen dissolved in the silver particles, of silver oxide on the surface of the silver powder, of the electric contact between the silver particles, as well as the basicity of the glass. Furthermore, we strive for insights into the silver mobility and the silver concentration that can be attained (silver solubility) in oxide glasses with a low melting point. Summing up all these aspects, a closed explanatory model for silver dissolution, transport and reprecipitation during the sintering of glass silver dispersions will be introduced. Based on the objective of the DFG (German research foundation) funded research group 1498 to clarify the influences on the ASR damage process, this paper deals with two focuses of investigation. In the first focus the technical requirements for the characterisation concerning the degradation and the formation of cracks in concrete pavements by the pre-damage as a result of fatigue loading were created. This was realized by the implementation and the optimisation of a monitoring system in the cyclic four point bending test to capture simultaneously the formation of cracks in the beam under sinusoidal bending load. In addition, the X-ray 3D-computed tomography was enhanced for the high-resolution quantitative spatial crack analysis in the drilling cores extracted of the beam under sinusoidal bending load without and with a pre-damage. Building on the first focus, in the second focus of investigation a significant change of the fracture-mechanical properties of the concrete as a result of fatigue loading has been demonstrated in numerous experiments using small specimens extracted from the beam under sinusoidal bending load. A1 - Panne, Ulrich T1 - Approach to Detection in Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy N2 - Gated detection with intensified detectors, e.g., ICCDs, is today the accepted approach for detection of plasma emission in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). However, these systems are more cost-intensive and less robust than nonintensified CCDs. The objective of this paper is to compare, both theoretically and experimentally, the performance of an intensified (ICCD) and nonintensified (CCD) detectors for detection of plasma emission in LIBS. The CCD is used in combination with a mechanical chopper, which blocks the early continuum radiation from the plasma. The detectors are attached sequentially to an echelle spectrometer under the same experimental conditions. The laser plasma is induced on a series of steel samples under atmospheric conditions. Our results indicate that there is no substantial difference in the performance of the CCD and ICCD. Signal-to-noise ratios and limits of detection achieved with the CCD for Si, Ni, Cr, Mo, Cu, and V in steel are comparable or even better than those obtained with the ICCD. This result is further confirmed by simulation of the plasma emission signal and the corresponding response of the detectors in the limit of quantum (photon) noise.
