For all material pairs, friction and wear depended largely on the relative humidity of the environment. When paired with steel the low IR-emission ceramic disks showed higher wear resistance. Under dry conditions, almost no wear was found on the low IR-emission ceramic specimen. The high wear on the steel counter body is caused not only by tribo-oxidation, which is the main wear mechanism, but also by abrasion. In dry conditions a COF of 0.6 and in humid conditions a COF of 0.2 have been measured. When paired with α-alumina the results on wear are just opposite to those with steel counterbody and the low IR-emission ceramic materials show much lower wear resistance under all conditions. This is explained by the predominance of abrasion and the relatively large difference in hardness between the low IR-emission ceramic and α-alumina. In high humidity environments the results point to the formation of stable reaction layers causing lower friction and wear. The aim of this study was to investigate the friction and wear properties of these composites under dry oscillating sliding condition at room temperature (RT) as well as at elevated temperature (120 °C). The polymer specimens were made to oscillate against steel cylinder as a counterpart. The friction and wear properties of PEI and composites were strongly influenced by the temperature. Incorporation of carbon fiber in the PEI matrix has increased the wear rate at RT, while at elevated temperature this trend was opposite. Abrasive action of carbon fibers has severely damaged the counterpart and resulted in accelerated wear of the composite at RT. Solid lubricants filled (PTFE, MoS2, graphite) along with glass fiber is beneficial in improving the friction and wear performance of the PEI composite at RT, whereas at elevated temperature wear performance was deteriorated. Tribological performance of neat PEI and glass fiber composite was similar with each other at RT. Scanning electron micrographs and optical micrographs of the worn polymer specimens and the steel cylinders was used to study the possible wear mechanisms. The present test results were also compared with data available on the reciprocating wear of PEI and composites in the literature and trends have been reported. A theoretical description and prediction of wear are in most cases still far from reality. It is, therefore, important to use test rigs before a practical application of a given material combination under tribological loading. On the other hand, model equations can be helpful for wear description, if a single wear mechanism is dominant. Under oscillating and continuous sliding contact conditions, equations for wear calculation are presented to describe running-in and stationary wear behaviour of metals and ceramics. By using shear energy density, real area of contact, flash temperature, activation energy and numerical simulations with the method of movable cellular automata (MCA), wear data were calculated and compared to experimental laboratory results. T1 - Tribological behaviour of structural Si-based ceramics in fretting tests at room temperature N2 - The friction and wear behaviour of SiC, Si3N4 and SiC/Si3N4 composite ceramics were investigated with oscillating sliding (gross slip fretting) at room temperature. The influence of counter body material and the humidity of the surrounding air was studied with a ball-on-disc configuration with different ball materials (1000Cr6, Al2O3 SiC and Si3N4). The effect of RH on friction is marginal with exception of SiC (low friction) as counter body material. The wear behaviour, however, is strongly affected by humidity, showing inverse trends for different counter body materials. Consequently, the wear behaviour of a tribo couple can be improved by selecting an adequate mating material. The results reveal the necessity to control RH in tribological tests. For estimation of the performance of tribo couples under varying environmental conditions, a variation of RH is required. In tribo couples with single phase SiC, either as ball or disc, the tribological behaviour of the system is dominated by SiC. The friction behaviour of the composite material is in between the behaviour of the two single phase materials, Si3N4 and SiC, whereas the wear behaviour is very similar to that of single phase Si3N4. In this way the dewaxing process is significantly improved when the wall thickness of the part exceeds 3 mm. The results show that the counterbody material influences the friction and wear behavior and therefore coating life time strongly. This effect is well known for these coatings at room temperature under dry environmental conditions, equivalent to conditions above 100 °C when water molecules desorb from the surface. However, the sharp difference in tribological performance between silicon nitride on the one hand and alumina and steel on the other hand cannot be understood in this context. Analyzing the friction behavior during the running-in phase, it is evident that only alumina and steel form a stable interface with constant low friction and relatively low wear rates. Silicon nitride forms an unstable interface with fluctuating COF and relatively high wear rates due to its own inherent tendency to tribo-oxidation. Part 1: Influence of contact pressure N2 - Different fretting tests of thin steel wires under different conditions (loads, strokes, number of cycles and mean pressures) were performed. The wires used had 0.45 mm in diameter and the material was a cold-drawn eutectoid carbon steel (0.8% C) with a tensile strength over 2800 MPa. The tests were carried out with 90° "crossed cylinders" configuration varying the stroke, normal load and testing time (number of cycles). Afterwards the volumetric wear was obtained using surface profilometry with diamond stylus. With a classical study of the coefficient of wear with respect to the sliding distance, the results show that the wear coefficient increases with normal load and stroke, consequently, for the same sliding distance, the wear produced was higher when the load and/or stroke is increased. In this work, the coefficient of wear is decreasing continuously as the test is running. In order to analyze better the wear behaviour, another method, in which the volumetric wear is compared with respect to the Archard's loading factor, is proposed. As result of this method, two distinctive behaviours were detected; one corresponds to the running-in period with a more aggressive wear behaviour and the second one to the stable steady state period. In all the tests the running-in period was similar with regard to the wear rates but in the stable period the wear rates were increasing with higher loads or strokes. Since such failures occurred only occasionally, the problem was not revealed by reciprocating sliding tests which are stressing a much smaller surface area compared to the tests in the hip joint simulator. Another type of failure, pits of 1–2 µm in diameter distributed randomly at the coating surface, was frequently observed by Scanning Electron Microscopy and analyzed comprehensively by Focused Ion Beam technique in combination with Transmission Electron Microscopy in one case. Although not necessarily affecting wear, such small failures might cause long-term problems in vivo, by providing access of body fluid to the substrate–coating interface making it susceptible to corrosion. A1 - Bewilogua, K. A1 - Keunecke, M. T1 - Wear of carbon nitride coatings under oscillating sliding conditions N2 - An extended study on tribological properties of carbon nitride coatings under oscillating sliding conditions has been carried out. The coatings were prepared by reactive magnetron sputtering with graphite target using nitrogen as reactive gas in an argon/nitrogen atmosphere during the deposition process to deposit carbon nitride, CNx. Coating thickness was about 2 µm. A 200–300 nm thick Ti interlayer was used to enhance adhesion. The nitrogen flow during the deposition was varied to control the amount of nitrogen in the coating. Maximum amount of N-content was about 28 at%, achieved at a maximum N2 flow rate. Other deposition parameters were target to substrate distance, substrate temperature during deposition and bias voltage. The results show a large variation of hardness depending mainly on the nitrogen content and bias voltage. Higher bias voltage produced harder coatings as did lower nitrogen content. The tribological properties were tested unlubricated and lubricated by paraffin oil under gross slip fretting conditions at room temperature against alumina as counter material. Most coatings, but not all, showed a more or less pronounced dependence of wear on relative humidity with wear rates from 10-5 to 10-6 mm3/Nm. The best coatings with regard to a low wear rate and the least dependence upon relative humidity were carbon nitride coatings deposited at elevated substrate temperatures up to 350 °C. The wear resistance of these coatings was increased under the most severe conditions by about one order of magnitude. The results are discussed on the basis of a transfer layer formation. The results show clearly that wear is not significantly correlated to the coating hardness which itself is strongly dependant on the nitrogen content. However, under lubricated conditions with paraffin oil, wear rates were generally very low with wear coefficients at about 10-8 mm3/Nm. The friction and wear behaviour of ceramics is often superior to that of metallic materials. Furthermore, an essential improvement of tribological performance will be possible by tailoring of ceramics in the process of powder preparation and sintering technique. Silicon Carbide (SiC) shows interesting friction and wear behaviour at room temperature, even under unlubricated running conditions but is very sensitive against effects of environmental humidity and shows high friction and high wear in the absence of water vapour. The tribological performance of SiC can be improved considerably by adding substantial amounts of TiC and TiB2 to the microstructure thus creating ceramic particulate composite materials. Various composites in the quasi ternary system SiC-TiC-TiB2 were prepared by a ceramic manufacturing process including sintering temperatures up to 2180 °C. Comparative tribo tests were performed under unlubricated oscillating sliding motion in dry, normal, and moist air and under water lubrication with SiC balls and Al2O3 balls as counter bodies. The friction is affected by the relative humidity (RH) but barely at all by the composition of the composites. The wear resistance of the composites was found to be improved considerably by addition of TiB2 in the range from 20 to 60 %. The highest wear resistance of the system wear was found when Al2O3 was used as counter body material. Special attention was paid to the influence of relative humidity on friction and wear results. For both ceramics the coefficient of friction against both ball materials decreases with increasing humidity and is higher in tests against alumina than against SiC. The wear rate is affected significantly by humidity and decreases by one order of magnitude for Al2O3/SiC system and by 2 orders of magnitude for SiC/SiC system. For TiB2 wear rates are nearly not affected by humidity against both ball materials and are much smaller than for SiC. T1 - Tribological characterisation of siliconcarbonitride ceramics derived from preceramic polymers N2 - Amorphous SiCN ceramics were prepared in a laboratory scale as disk shaped specimens with 10 mm diameter and 0.3 mm thickness. The friction and wear behaviour was characterised in gross slip fretting tests under unlubricated conditions at room temperature against steel (100Cr6) and ceramic (Al2O3). Tests with a ball-on-disk contact were performed in laboratory air with different content of water vapour. The results show clearly that the relative humidity has a significant effect on friction and wear behaviour. All tests in dry air lead to higher friction and higher wear rate than in normal air. Improved friction and wear behaviour was observed with increasing pyrolysis temperature up to 1100 °C of the SiCN specimens. This is attributed to increasingly better mechanical properties and higher stiffness of the amorphous network due to the evaporation of gaseous organic species and the formation of free graphite like carbon. T1 - Analysis of different strategies to reduce fretting wear in thin steel roping wires N2 - After having checked in a previous study the influence of stroke and normal load in laboratory fretting tests accomplished with thin steel roping wires, in this paper the effect of the contact pressure (test configuration), environmental conditions (relative humidity) and reduction of the friction coefficient (lubricants) on the wear behaviour were analysed. The wires were 0.45 mm in diameter and the material was a cold-drawn eutectoid carbon steel (0.8% C) with a Tensile Strength over 2800 MPa. The tests were performed on an oscillating test rig and the volumetric wear of both specimens of the tribocouple was determined separately from three-dimensional topographies of the wear scars acquired by means of a confocal profiler, and a calculation algorithm developed in using MATLAB®. The strong effect of humidity and lubrication on wear behaviour was proved, whereas a slight effect of contact pressure was derived. T1 - Dependence of the friction coefficient on roughness parameters during early stage fretting of (Al,Ti)N coated surfaces N2 - Main focus was on the correlation of the coefficient of friction (COF) with the geometrical parameters of the surface during early stage of the running-in period. TiN, TiAlN and AlTiN coatings were prepared by using rotating cathode arc evaporation unit. The roughness of the WC-Co substrate Ra ranged from 0.05 to 0.2 µm and the coating thickness was 2.3 ± 0.2 µm. Part of the samples were subjected to the surface modification by the drag grinding finishing. Geometrical parameters of the surface were evaluated by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM) and fretting tests were conducted with 10 mm diameter alumina ball under 2 N load, 100 µm slip distance and the frequency of 10 Hz. It was found that the distribution of macroparticles strongly influences the geometrical parameters of the surface and the number of macroparticles increases with increasing Al content in the coating. In the case of the positive skewness Ssq of the coating surface, the kurtosis Sku provides a statistically significant effect on the COF, namely the COF depends inversely on the kurtosis Sku. The kurtosis value for TiN was the highest among as-deposited coatings, subsequently, the slowest increase rate in the COF was observed for the TiN coating. N2 - Recent developments in contact mechanics and microfribology have shown that it is very important to study surface modification effects for quantification of „Zero wear“ (plastic deformation of upper parts of asperities) during sliding friction. The present work considers experimental and Simulation data on the Formation of elastic and plastic contact areas during sliding friction on rough surfaces. The Simulation of discrete contact was carried out using as a source the AFMimages of real surface topography at micro/nanoscale. The approach for quantification of „zero wear“, proposed here, is not using common Statistical Parameters of roughness, but it considers contact areas on asperities. In these areas some regions are undergoing plastic deformation which influences surface Transformation during sliding friction. Also, the workhardening effect was taken into account in the Simulation of sliding friction. This enabled a rnore successful fit of experimental data. The results obtained of the Computer simulations will provide a way of studying friction force at the initial stage of the running-in process. T2 - 53. Due to inconstant ffiction values, positioning processes can be substantially influenced as well as vibrations can be induced. The appearance of this tribological effect, named stick-slip, depends on different factors such as sliding speed, relative humidity and ambient temperature occurring primarily after long operating periods. Beside ambient conditions the choice of materials in contact is the main influencing factor of an inconstant coefficient of friction during operating. Certain polymers are well known for their stick-slip tendencies in technical applications. These are on the one hand different modifications of PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) reinforced with glass fibers, bronze or graphite and on the other hand thermoplastics such as PE (polyester) or Pf (polyimide). The difference between static and dynamic values of the ffiction force is decisive for stick-slip phenomena. Furthermore, the stick-slip tendency of polymers strongly depends on the elastic material properties. Main softening material areas, which can be found in the contact, represent particularly vulnerable areas. The high friction value in the contact area decreases in most cases by increasing sliding speeds. However, beside polymers ceramic materials can also offer tendencies to stick-slip motion.
