T1 - Tribological behavior of carbon nanofibers deposited on hard nanocomposite (nc-Ti1 - xAlxN)/(a-Si3N4) coating N2 - Main focus was on the deposition of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) onto the hard nanocomposite (nc-Ti1 - xAlxN)/(a-Si3N4) (nACo®) coating surface and the investigation of the structure and tribological properties of CNFs. The alcohol chemical vapor deposition (ACCVD) method was employed to prepare CNFs and the deposition temperatures were 600 and 700 °C, respectively. Prior to the CNF deposition, Ni catalyst was deposited onto the nACo® surface using the magnetron sputtering. The influence of the deposition temperature on the carbon nanofibers structure was investigated by Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The higher order degree of CNF structure is observed with increasing deposition temperature. Tribological tests were carried out under fretting contact conditions against Al2O3 ball. It is shown that the coefficient of friction (COF) decreases from 1.0 to 1.2 for the clean nACo® surface to 0.2–0.4 for the CNF layers deposited on the nACo® surface. The roughness of the nACo® surface was varied and a higher durability of the CNF layers deposited on the rougher nACo® surface is found. It can be concluded from the experiments, that small grain size, narrow grain size distribution and a low oxygen content are the most important prerequisites for high sintering activity of the nanocrystalline TiN powders. For all material pairs, friction and wear depended largely on the relative humidity of the environment. When paired with steel the low IR-emission ceramic disks showed higher wear resistance. Under dry conditions, almost no wear was found on the low IR-emission ceramic specimen. The high wear on the steel counter body is caused not only by tribo-oxidation, which is the main wear mechanism, but also by abrasion. In dry conditions a COF of 0.6 and in humid conditions a COF of 0.2 have been measured. When paired with α-alumina the results on wear are just opposite to those with steel counterbody and the low IR-emission ceramic materials show much lower wear resistance under all conditions. This is explained by the predominance of abrasion and the relatively large difference in hardness between the low IR-emission ceramic and α-alumina. In high humidity environments the results point to the formation of stable reaction layers causing lower friction and wear. By stitching AFM images acquired over the wear scar, the detailed structure of the scar can be characterized even when the scar is much wider than the typical maximum scan range of the AFM (50–100 µm). The results obtained by AFM are compared with those yielded by white light interferometry (WLI). The comparison validates the WLI measurements; at the same time, it shows decisive differences in the resolutions of these two methods. As a consequence, AFM measurements are necessary whenever a precise characterization of the structure of the scar is required. However, since stitching of AFM images is rather time-consuming, white light interferometry is recommended as a faster method whenever experiments are aimed at just a gross characterization of the scar and the measurement of mean quantities (e.g. the wear volume). Part 2: Influence of crossing angle N2 - The wear behaviour of thin steel wires has been analyzed under oscillating sliding conditions in crossed cylinders contact geometry. The focus of this analysis was the influence of the crossing angle between the wires on the wear. The wires used had 0.45 mm in diameter and the material was cold-drawn eutectoid carbon steel (0.8% C) with a tensile strength higher than 2800 MPa. Two different types of tests were carried out, the first one representing the influence of the crossing angle for a constant load and the second one representing the influence of the crossing angle with constant contact pressure. In the first type of tests it was seen that as the contact angle decreases the contact pressure decreases too and hence less energy specific wear resistance is observed. As a consequence less wear is produced, thus increasing the life of the wires. In the second type of tests it was seen that with constant contact pressure but different crossing angles, nearly the same energy specific wear resistance was observed. This points at an identical wear behaviour in both type of tests but with a running-in and a steady state period as two different wear periods. The tests showed that the running in period may play an important role in the overall wear particle generation and hence the wear occurring in the steady state period is rather mild. T2 - 52. N2 - Recent developments in contact mechanics and microfribology have shown that it is very important to study surface modification effects for quantification of „Zero wear“ (plastic deformation of upper parts of asperities) during sliding friction. The present work considers experimental and Simulation data on the Formation of elastic and plastic contact areas during sliding friction on rough surfaces. The Simulation of discrete contact was carried out using as a source the AFMimages of real surface topography at micro/nanoscale. The approach for quantification of „zero wear“, proposed here, is not using common Statistical Parameters of roughness, but it considers contact areas on asperities. In these areas some regions are undergoing plastic deformation which influences surface Transformation during sliding friction. Also, the workhardening effect was taken into account in the Simulation of sliding friction. This enabled a rnore successful fit of experimental data. The results obtained of the Computer simulations will provide a way of studying friction force at the initial stage of the running-in process. T2 - 53. T1 - Dependence of the friction coefficient on roughness parameters during early stage fretting of (Al,Ti)N coated surfaces N2 - Main focus was on the correlation of the coefficient of friction (COF) with the geometrical parameters of the surface during early stage of the running-in period. TiN, TiAlN and AlTiN coatings were prepared by using rotating cathode arc evaporation unit. The roughness of the WC-Co substrate Ra ranged from 0.05 to 0.2 µm and the coating thickness was 2.3 ± 0.2 µm. Part of the samples were subjected to the surface modification by the drag grinding finishing. Geometrical parameters of the surface were evaluated by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM) and fretting tests were conducted with 10 mm diameter alumina ball under 2 N load, 100 µm slip distance and the frequency of 10 Hz. It was found that the distribution of macroparticles strongly influences the geometrical parameters of the surface and the number of macroparticles increases with increasing Al content in the coating. In the case of the positive skewness Ssq of the coating surface, the kurtosis Sku provides a statistically significant effect on the COF, namely the COF depends inversely on the kurtosis Sku. The kurtosis value for TiN was the highest among as-deposited coatings, subsequently, the slowest increase rate in the COF was observed for the TiN coating. Due to inconstant ffiction values, positioning processes can be substantially influenced as well as vibrations can be induced. The appearance of this tribological effect, named stick-slip, depends on different factors such as sliding speed, relative humidity and ambient temperature occurring primarily after long operating periods. Beside ambient conditions the choice of materials in contact is the main influencing factor of an inconstant coefficient of friction during operating. Certain polymers are well known for their stick-slip tendencies in technical applications. These are on the one hand different modifications of PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) reinforced with glass fibers, bronze or graphite and on the other hand thermoplastics such as PE (polyester) or Pf (polyimide). The difference between static and dynamic values of the ffiction force is decisive for stick-slip phenomena. Furthermore, the stick-slip tendency of polymers strongly depends on the elastic material properties. Main softening material areas, which can be found in the contact, represent particularly vulnerable areas. The high friction value in the contact area decreases in most cases by increasing sliding speeds. However, beside polymers ceramic materials can also offer tendencies to stick-slip motion. Klaffke et al. already investigated the influence of ceramic materials on the stick-slip behavior in. T1 - Influence of polymer filler on tribological properties of thermoplastic polyurethane under oscillating sliding conditions against cast iron N2 - The tribological behaviour of unfilled thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and a polymer sphere filled (TPUG) thermoplastic polyurethane have been studied under oscillating sliding condition against cast iron as a counterpart. In the case of unfilled TPU, the wear mechanisms are dominated by particle detachment and roll formation. In principle, TPUG also showed a similar wear mechanism as that of unfilled TPU; in addition, particle pull-out and delamination are also observed. Wear volume of TPUG was significantly higher than that for the unfilled TPU and this is attributed to the different material removal processes taking place in the material during sliding. The polymer spheres as a filler material deteriorated the wear resistance of TPU because of improper adhesion and bonding of filler in the TPU matrix and therefore it contributed to more wear. In case of TPU the friction behaviour was strongly dependant on the temperature and surface roughness of the counter body. The results showed that below the glass transition temperature higher friction values are observed with higher counter body surface roughness. However, above the glass transition temperature, higher friction values are observed with a smoother surface roughness of the counter body. In case of TPUG, the friction behaviour was not significantly dependent on surface roughness of the counter body. Since such failures occurred only occasionally, the problem was not revealed by reciprocating sliding tests which are stressing a much smaller surface area compared to the tests in the hip joint simulator. Another type of failure, pits of 1–2 µm in diameter distributed randomly at the coating surface, was frequently observed by Scanning Electron Microscopy and analyzed comprehensively by Focused Ion Beam technique in combination with Transmission Electron Microscopy in one case. Although not necessarily affecting wear, such small failures might cause long-term problems in vivo, by providing access of body fluid to the substrate–coating interface making it susceptible to corrosion.
