However, it requires relatively long treatment times owing to the low thermal conductivity of wood. Direct dielectric heating that applies radio waves or microwaves has the advantage of more homogeneous heating. However, Sound experimental data on this technique are currently rare. Therefore, the thermal treatment of wood-destroying insects with radio waves and microwaves was studied with two model pests, Anobium punctatum and Hylotrupes bajulus, and with Tenebrio molitor as a reference. The secure elimination of pests was achieved, and the corresponding treatment time was in the range of a few minutes. Temperature profiles were more homogeneous when applying radio waves. N2 - Gemeiner Nagekäfer und Kleidermotte sind unerwünscht im Museum. Kulturgüter mit Anteilen von Holz, Federn, Wolle, Haare, etc. wie ethnologische oder naturkundliche Sammlungsstücke, aber auch Bilderahmen oder Freilichtmuseen werden von ihnen gerne besucht. Dabei sind es die Jugendstadien (Larven) dieser Insekten, die sich von ungeschützten Exponaten oder Depotstücken, die diese natürlichen Materialien enthalten, ernähren. Die Entwicklung der Larven findet verborgen im Inneren der Materialien statt. Die geflügelten erwachsenen Formen, die sich im freien Raum bewegen, sich fortpflanzen und den Neubefall herbeiführen, treten saisonal sehr begrenzt auf. Eine frühzeitige Detektion der Schädlinge, als erwachsenes Insekt oder als Larve, ist dadurch erschwert. Es gilt folglich deren Präsenz und erste Anzeichen eines Befalls zuverlässig und vor allem frühzeitig feststellen zu können, um geeignete Maßnahmen zum Schutz des Kulturgutes einzuleiten. Neben dem Wissen um die Materialeigenschaften des Kulturgutes sind umfängliche Kenntnis über die Biologie der Schädlinge, zu ihren grundsätzlichen Lebensansprüchen und insbesondere zum Verhalten, das zum Neubefall führt, wichtig. Die Larvenstadien von Holz- und Textilschädlingen zeichnen sich durch hohe Toleranzen gegenüber extremen Temperaturen und Luftfeuchten aus. Für sie ungünstige Bedingungen können sie sehr lange in Ruhephasen überdauern. Nicht erkannter, versteckter Befall von Materialien sind häufige Infektionsquellen für Neubefall von Sammlungen. Verborgene natürliche Befallsquellen im eigenen Museumssystem spielen bei Neubefall von Exponaten eine größere Rolle als der Zuflug von Schadinsekten aus Reservoiren von außen. Der Vortrag stellt beispielhaft Lebenszyklen relevanter Schädlingsarten vor und zeigt Möglichkeiten gezielter Interventionen auf, die in ein IPM Konzept einfließen können. Material and Methods: Scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris), fir (Abies nordmanniana), spruce (Picea orientalis), cedar (Cedrus libani), poplar (Populus tremula) and beech (Fagus orientalis) woods were used to test H. bajulus larvae (EN 46-1). Alder (Alnus glutinosa), oak (Quercus cerris), poplar (Populus tremula), beech (Fagus orientalis), maple (Acer carpinifolium), ash (Fraxinus angustifolia), teak (Tectona grandis), ayous (Triplochiton scleroxylon), movingui (Distemonanthus benthamianus), dahoma (Piptadeniastrum africanum), iroko (Chlorophora excelsa), bubinga (Guibourtia tessmannii) and sapele (Entandrophragma cylindiricum) woods were used for A. punctatum larvae (EN 49-1). At the end of the experiment, the mortality rates of the larvae were determined and the size and weights of the surviving larvae were measured. Main results: F. orientalis and C. libani were found to be the most resistant wood species against H. bajulus larvae while A. nordmanniana was the least resistant. All tropical wood species and oak and maple from domestic wood species showed 100% mortality rate therefore found to be the most resistant against A. punctatum larvae. The most vulnerable wood species was found to be alder with a 35% mortality. Research highlights: while F. orientalis, C. libani, and P. tremula were found the most resistance wood species against H. bajulus, P. sylvestris and A. nordmanniana were determined as most vulnerable. All tropical wood species and two domestic species (Q. cerris and A. carpinifolium) showed the highest mortality rate as 100%. The least durable domestic wood was determined as alder. In order to serve the needs in antibiotics development we selected untapped bioresources and implemented high throughput approaches suitable for the discovery of strains producing antibiotics with anti-Gram negative activity. Our approaches rely on the hypothesis that Termite associated bacteria are likely to produce potent antibiotics to defend their hosts against entomopathogenic microorganisms. Termite nests and guts harbor suitable, highly diverse microbiomes in which bacterial taxa are present known to potentially produce natural compounds. In a first step the diversity of Coptotermes species nest microbiomes was assessed carefully by using 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing on the Illumina MiSeq platform and nest material was selected to retrieve viable cells by using Nycodenz density gradient centrifugation. In order to analyze the diversity of the culturable termite nest microbiome, bacterial cells were either distributed in 384-well plates (approach 1) or encapsulated in small spheric agarose beads by an high throughput microfluidics technique (approach 2). Cultures obtained from approach 1 were scaled-up in 96-well Duetz-systems for characterization of diversity and for rapid supernatant screening using the bioluminescence-labeled E. coli pFU166. The generated droplets of approach 2 simultaneously received a small population of GFP-tagged Gram negative screening cells and were sorted for low fluorescence using FACS. After elimination of redundancy we performed a fast scale-up of active strains. Implementation of this pipeline allows us to prioritize antibiotics producing strains in a ultra-high throughput fashion and by cultivation of broad diversity in our approches. We explore this issue by examining the role of soldiers in protecting nestmates against pathogen infection. Even though they are unable to engage in grooming behaviour, we find that the presence of soldiers of the Darwin termite, Mastotermes darwiniensis, significantly improves the survival of nestmates following entomopathogenic infection. We also show that the copious exocrine oral secretions produced by Darwin termite soldiers contain a high concentration of Proteins involved in digestion, chemical biosynthesis, and immunity. The oral secretions produced by soldiers are sufficient to protect nestmates against infection, and they have potent inhibitory activity against a broad spectrum of microbes. Our findings support the view that soldiers may play an important role in colony immunity, and broaden our understanding of the possible function of soldiers during the origin of soldier-first societies. Hier wurde die thermische Behandlung mittels Radio- und Mikrowellen untersucht. Die direkte, dielektrische Erwärmung hat den Vorteil einer größeren Homogenität der Aufheizung. Die mit Radiowellen erzielten Temperaturprofile waren homogener als die mit Mikrowellen realisierten. Untersuchungen zeigten, dass die Abtötung nicht auf die direkte Einwirkung von elektromagnetischen Feldern, sondern auf die Temperaturerhöhung zurückzuführen ist. Under certain anthropogenic influenced circumstances, however, these pest insects are used to produce unique Commodities of art or entertainment. The Status of a pest then turns from destroyers to creators. Three examples will be described in which larvae of the European house longhom beetle Hylotrupes bajulus (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), the webbing clothes moth Tineola bisselliella (Lepidoptera: Tineidae) and the drywood termite species Incisitermes marginipennis (Isoptera: Kalotermitidae) were used in special art performances. These are “Glühkäferkomplott” (lightning bug conspiracy) by Stefan Kaegi, „Platz machen“ (taking place) by Monica Bonvicini & al. and „Kollektivkunst“ (collective art) by Julia Treptow & Sophie Lokatis. Major focus in all three performances is the documented process of the materials ongoing break down by the insects, rather than the final destroyed object. Besides the pure entertaining effect, the artists provoke with the subversive intentions of their performances. The larvae cause damage in Stores, museums and households. Infestation can be through import of infested material or by new infestations out of natural reservoirs. Natural reservoirs are believed to be bird, rodent or insect nests. Rearing experiments with collected different nesting materials have shown that T. bisselliella is capable to breed in animal nests as well as on stored seeds. Outdoor trapping with pheromones for catching males or with attractive food for the larvae to catch females indicate that the presence of T. bisselliella outside buildings is very limited. Although the webbing clothes moth has the potential to survive in non-synanthropic environments, it does not frequently occur there. Intra-guild competition with other tineid moths prevents T. bisselliella from establishing sustainable outdoor population. New infestations from the field are unlikely and preventive control must focus on quarantine to avoid the pest’s introduction via contaminated material. Weitgehend unbekannt ist, inwieweit diese Laborprüfung die Qualität der Produkte unter Praxisbedingungen realistisch widerspiegelt. In der vorliegenden Studie wurden fünf Testprodukte dieser Laborprüfung in Kombination mit einer vierwöchigen QUV-Bewitterung resp. sechsmonatigen Freilandbewitterung sowie einer sechsjährigen Freilandexposition unterzogen und die Ergebnisse miteinander verglichen. Es zeigte sich, dass eine Laborprüfung gemäß EN 152 (2011) in Kombination mit einer QUV-Bewitterung eine starke Beanspruchung für Bläueprodukte ist. Produkte, die in diesem Labortest die Ausbildung von Bläue an Holzoberflächen verhinderten, zeigten keinerlei Ausfälle nach vierjähriger und nur geringfügige Verblauungen nach sechsjähriger Freilandexposition. A sustainable protection requires an analysis of the desired Service Situation and the predicted Service life as well as the quality of the wood product. Furthermore, infestation probability by organisms should be estimated, which is best achieved through excellent knowledge of the pests' general biology. Using the house longhom beetle (old house borer), Hylotrupes bajulus, as an example, results of scientific research and in situ experiences are critically reviewed in their contribution to wood protection regulation in Germany. Multiple institutions and several personalities had major impacts on this subject. One of them is Günther Becker. He worked for more than 40 years at the Federal German Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) in Berlin and substantially influenced the national and international wood protection Science in the second part of the 20th Century. The achievements of Günther Becker are acknowledged on the occasion of his centennial birthday. N2 - The control of wood boring beetles in structural timber is uniformly regulated in the European Union. Registration and authorization of wood preservatives for the European market has to follow a regulated procedure as described under the Biocidal Product Directive “EU 528/2012”. Non-biocidal measures of control such as by physical means are regulated individually by each member state on the national level. The Biocidal Product Directive demands voluminous data sets for product identity, environmental and health risk assessments, proof of efficacy, and management strategies to avoid the development of resistance, just to name the most important. With TTIP (Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership) on the horizon, it must be expected that wood preservatives coming from the North American Market to Europe and vice versa will mutually be recognized in the future, despite existing differences in registration requirements. The presentation will focus on major differences in standard efficacy tests for wood preservatives with claims for beetle control, which, next to others, have to be passed before product placement on the respective market. Desirable needs for future harmonizing will be identified in order to overcome consumers distrust on each side of the partners. We have evaluated each species potential impact on suppressing the pest Tineola bisselliella (Lepidoptera: Tineidae). Both parasitoids have shown high potential for biological control of webbing clothes moth larvae when tested on different host instars in the laboratory and field. Preferences for parasitizing older and larger host larval instars for egg largely overlap in both species. Apanteles carpatus is a solitary koinobiont and parthenogen, while B. tineivorus is a gregarious koinobiont, with a sex ratio of approximately 1:5 (male:female). Solitary reproduction in A. carpatus markedly suppressed the pest population early on but lagged large numbers of progeny in the F(-generation. Gregarious reproduction resulted in a faster build-up of the F1generation but lagged the immediate control effect. Combining the release of both parasitoid species for pest control seemed to be the logical conclusion. We tested the reproductive success of both species when experimentally forced into intensive intraguild competition. For this, parasitoids had either to compete simultaneously or slightly time shifted on the same preferred host resource. Reproductive success of A. carpatus was not significantly influenced by the presence of B. tineivorus. B. tineivorus reproductive output was significantly reduced in the presence of A. carpatus. Overall Suppression of host development was not significantly enhanced with both parasitoid species co-occurring when compared to their exclusive access to hosts. B. tineivorus does not significantly improve the control of webbing clothes moth hosts when occurring together with and having to compete against A. carpatus, at least in restricted laboratory conditions. Results show that B. tineivorus should be released with a temporal advantage of at least several days. For inundative release, reproduction strategies and even competition between parasitoids is negligible, and a deferred release strategy would not be required.
