TY - JOUR A1 - Schmidt, Wolfram A1 - Priebe, Nsesheye Susan T1 - SCC: a solution to the challenges of concrete construction in Africa N2 - Concrete can play a major role in overcoming the challenges of construction in sub-Saharan Africa where various factors negatively affect the quality and durability of concrete structures. Self-compacting concrete (SCC) is a practical solution to separate concrete properties from these parameters. Conditions on most African construction sites militate against producing high-quality concrete; SCC’s exceptional workability outweighs any of its limitations. This article examines how to introduce robust, reliable, cost-efficient SCC into practice as a pre-mixed dry compound incorporating local materials like natural pozzolans, cassava starch and lignosulphonate.
