A1 - Pritzkow, Wolfgang A1 - Radtke, Martin A1 - Riesemeier, Heinrich T1 - RBS, SY-XRF, INAA and ICP-IDMS of antimony implanted in silicon - A multi-method approach to characterize and certify a reference material N2 - A layer of Sb atoms, implanted with an energy of 400 keV and a nominal dose of 5×1016 atoms/cm2 into a high purity silicon wafer, was certified for its areal density (atoms/cm2) using Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS), instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) and inductively coupled plasma isotope dilution mass spectrometry (ICP-IDMS) and for its isotope ratio using INAA and ICP-IDMS. Excellent agreement between the results of the different independent methods was found. In the present work, the measurements of the homogeneity of the areal density of Sb, previously determined with RBS in spots having 1 mm diameter, are improved with synchrotron X-ray fluorescence analysis: Higher precision in even smaller sample spots allows to estimate a reduced inhomogeneity of the whole batch of samples of the order of only 0.4%. Thus the uncertainty of the certified value can further be reduced. Down to fractions of a chip with 0.3×0.4 mm2 area, the areal density is now certified as (4.81±0.06)×1016 Sb atoms/cm2, where the expanded uncertainty 0.06 (coverage factor k=2) corresponds to only 1.2%. The relative merits of the different analytical methods are discussed. One prominent artifact is the Sky Disc of Nebra, which presented a relatively straightforward question to be addressed: Do the gold inlays belong together, and can we glean insights about their origin? In contrast, the analysis of the Bernstorf gold, an alleged Bronze Age treasure composed of exceptionally pure gold, posed a more intricate challenge. The debate surrounding its authenticity prompted an in-depth investigation utilizing SR XRF with different experimental conditions. This approach, involving the analysis of trace elements, played a pivotal role in elucidating the nature and age of the gold, offering valuable insights into its production Platinum emerges as a crucial trace element for gold analysis, given its typically low concentration in gold artifacts, often in the range of a few parts per million (ppm). Accurately measuring Platinum in the presence of overlapping emission lines from gold is arduous. To overcome this challenge, BAMline developed a wavelength dispersive set-up known as D2XRF, employing a pixelated energy-dispersive X-ray detector (pnCCD). This innovative approach enables the resolution of overlapping emission lines, leading to a remarkable detection limit of 1 ppm for Platinum in gold samples. Furthermore, the application of the pnCCD for imaging element distributions on a Phoenician ivory artifact will be showcased. This technique allows for the visualization and mapping of various elements, which opens the possibility to reconstruct the original appearance. The comprehensive analysis of ancient gold artifacts at BAMline has provided valuable insights into the craftsmanship, trade, and technological advancements of ancient civilizations. By unraveling the complex stories these artifacts carry, our studies contributed significantly to the fields of archaeology, history, and materials science. It underscores the importance of interdisciplinary approaches in piecing together the puzzle of human history, revealing the interconnectedness of cultures through the lens of non-destructive analysis. While both of these alloys are good glass formers, there is a difference in their glass-forming abilities (Zr41.5Ti41.5Ni17 > Zr69.5Cu12Ni11Al7.5). This difference is explained by inciting the relative importance of strong chemical order, icosahedral content, cluster symmetry and configuration diversity. The method is demonstrated by single-shot experiments performed on polycrystalline nickel and α-brass, representing the pure wavy and the pure planar dislocation slip behavior. To correlate the resulting diffraction patterns with various dislocation arrangements of both metals, fatigue tests were carried out up to certain numbers of cycles and at predetermined plastic strain amplitudes. The differences in dislocation microstructure and internal stress distributions give rise to an appreciable change in the peak shape of Laue reflections, leading to unique characteristics in the respective diffraction patterns. Nickel reflections are elongated due to the high amount of cell structures leading to bending and misorientation of the lattice, whereas the present stacking faults in α-brass result in powder-like diffraction. As a multipurpose beamline serving users from various disciplines, it underscores the necessity of adaptable and efficient control systems to maximize beamline utilization and scientific output. In this contribution, we detail the innovative integration of ChatGPT , OpenAI’s state-of-the-art Large Language Model (LLM), with the Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System (EPICS) which underpins the operational framework of the BAMline. This integration leverages the advanced natural language processing (NLP) capabilities of ChatGPT, presenting a revolutionary approach to beamline control that markedly simplifies user interaction. Through this, we facilitate a user-friendly pathway to executing complex experimental setups, eliminating the barrier imposed by conventional scripting languages and the often-challenging graphical user interfaces. This innovation promises to significantly streamline experimental workflows, thereby enhancing the efficiency of scientific research conducted at the beamline. Further enhancing this user-centric approach, we introduce an advanced graphical user interface (GUI) application. This novel application seamlessly melds the LLM’s NLP capabilities with EPICS, thereby enabling researchers to articulate experimental requirements through simple textual or voice commands. This interface interprets these commands to manipulate various beamline components, including but not limited to the Double Crystal Monochromator (DCM), Double Multilayer Monochromator (DMM), as well as various filters and slits. By parsing user input, extracting pertinent parameters, and generating a structured JSON object that reflects the desired device positions and experimental settings, the GUI application bridges the gap between complex control commands and intuitive user interactions. This advancement not only lowers the entry threshold for new users but also streamlines the operational workflow for experienced researchers. Looking ahead, we aim to extend the system to cover the entire experimental cycle, from setup to data analysis. Using LLMs, one could translate plain-language experiment descriptions into precise operational commands, revolutionizing the research process and making advanced scientific exploration more accessible to a wider community. The object to be gilded is coated with an amalgam (a solution of gold (Au) in mercury (Hg)). By heating, the largest part of the Hg is subsequently evaporated and there remains a gold layer, containing still detectable amounts of Hg. The information on the used gilding technique might be crucial for the conservation and preservation of archaeological objects. Therefore, the main objective of this work is the detailed understanding of the behaviour of Hg under conditions of fire gilding. I.e. the understanding of the diffusion and evaporating behaviour of Hg, depending on parameters like substrate material (silver, copper, bronze, brass...), heating temperature and duration, and the resulting Hg depth profiles under these conditions. Secondary objective is the establishment of a measurement protocol for the unambiguous identification of different types of gilding, based solely on non-destructive methods, which can be applied to historical samples. In a first step, fire-gilded samples have been prepared on Cu and Ag sheet metal, respectively. Some of the gildings were produced by a professional goldsmith; another set of samples was produced under laboratory conditions. These samples have been examined with NAA (neutron activation analysis) and SR-XRF (synchrotron radiation induced X-ray fluorescence). First results of these measurements will be presented and discussed. This paper deals with first results of the study of silverpoint drawings of Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528) belonging to the sketchbook that Albrecht Dürer used during a travel to the Netherlands in 1520/21. These results are compared to a PIXE study performed on drawings from the same sketchbook. The minor element composition of the silverpoint used for the drawings in the sketchbook was (10.6 ± 3.5) wt.% of Cu and traces of Zn. Mercury was found in the marks but does not belong to the initial composition of the silverpoint as it is attributed to an alteration phenomenon. One drawing of the sketchbook represents an exception. It consists of silver marks containing an additional minor element, Zn, in the marks and was, therefore, created with another silverpoint, probably at a different time than the other drawings. Film thickness ranged in the order 10 nm. An attempt was made to estimate the confidence range of the method by comparison with results from other methods of analysis. The data show that in addition to the uncertainty of the spectral intensity measurement and the complicated fitting routine, systematic deviation caused by the underlying model should be added. The scattering in the results from other methods does not enable specification of a range of uncertainty, but deviations from the real thickness are estimated to be less than 20%. As a multipurpose beamline serving users from various disciplines, it underscores the necessity of adaptable and efficient control systems to maximize beamline utilization and scientific output. In this contribution, we detail the innovative integration of ChatGPT, OpenAI’s state-of-the-art Large Language Model (LLM), with the Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System (EPICS) which underpins the operational framework of the BAMline. Analysis of these drawings requires particular attention because the study has to be fully non-destructive and extremely sensitive. The metal alloy on the paper does not exceed some hundreds of µg/cm². Therefore, synchrotron radiation induced X-ray fluorescence (SR-XRF) is – together with external micro-proton-induced X-ray emission – the only well-suited method for the analyses of metalpoint drawings. In some primary work, about 25 German and Flemish metalpoint drawings were investigated using spatially resolved SR-XRF analysis at the BAMline at BESSY. This study enlarges the existing French–German database of metalpoint drawings dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, as these Rembrandt drawings originate from the 17th century where this graphical technique was even rarer and already obsolete. It also illustrates how SR-XRF analysis can reinforce art historical assumptions on the dating of drawings and their connection. A1 - Riesemeier, Heinrich T1 - Fingerprinting ancient gold by measuring Pt with spatially resolved high energy Sy-XRF N2 - Trace elements of ancient gold such as Pt, give fundamental information on the circulation of the metal in the past. In the case of objects from the cultural heritage, the determination of trace elements requires non-destructive point analysis in general. These conditions and the need of good detection limits restrain the number of applicable analytical techniques. After the development of a PIXE set-up with a selective Cu or Zn filter of 75 µm and of a PIXE-XRF set-up using a primary target of As, we tested the possibilities of spatially resolved Sy-XRF to determine Pt in gold alloys. With a Zn filter, PIXE showed a detection limit of 1000 ppm in gold while PIXE-XRF lowers this detection limit down to 80 ppm. This last value being constrained by the resonant Raman effect produced on gold. In order to improve the detection limit of Pt keeping the non-destructiveness and access to point analysis, we developed an analytical protocol for XRF with synchrotron radiation at BESSY II, using the BAMline set-up. The L-lines of Pt were excited by a beam of energy above and below 11.564 keV and measured using a Si(Li) detector with a 50 µm Cu filter. A µ-beam of 100–250 µm2 was used according to the size of the sample. The determination of the Pt content in the samples was carried out by Monte-Carlo simulation and subtraction of Au and Pt spectra obtained on pure standards. The limit of detection for Pt of 20 ppm was determined by using certified standards. The detection limits of a small set of other characteristic elements of gold were also measured using an incident energy of 33 keV. T1 - Revealing Silver Nanoparticle Uptake by Macrophages Using SR-μXRF and LA-ICP-MS N2 - To better study the impact of nanoparticles on both in vitro and in vivo models, tissue distribution and cellular doses need to be described more closely. Here silver nanoparticles were visualized in alveolar macrophages by means of synchrotron radiation micro X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (SR-μXRF) with high spatial resolution of 3 × 3 μm2. For the spatial allocation of silver signals to cells and tissue structures, additional elemental labeling was carried out by staining with eosin, which binds to protein and can be detected as bromine signal with SR-μXRF. The method was compatible with immunostaining of macrophage antigens. We found that the silver distribution obtained with SR-μXRF was largely congruent with distribution maps from a subsequent laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) of the same tissue sites. The study shows a predominant, though not exclusive uptake of silver into alveolar macrophages in the rat lung, which can be modeled by a similar uptake in cultured alveolar macrophages. Advantages and limitations of the different strategies for measuring nanoparticle uptake at the single cell level are discussed. T1 - Compact pnCCD-based X-ray camera with high spatial and energy resolution: a color X-ray camera N2 - For many applications there is a requirement for nondestructive analytical investigation of the elemental distribution in a sample. With the improvement of X-ray optics and spectroscopic X-ray imagers, full field X-ray fluorescence (FF-XRF) methods are feasible. A new device for high-resolution X-ray imaging, an energy and spatial resolving X-ray camera, is presented. The basic idea behind this so-called 'color X-ray camera' (CXC) is to combine an energy dispersive array detector for X-rays, in this case a pnCCD, with polycapillary optics. Imaging is achieved using multiframe recording of the energy and the point of impact of single photons. The camera was tested using a laboratory 30 µm microfocus X-ray tube and synchrotron radiation from BESSY II at the BAMline facility. These experiments demonstrate the suitability of the camera for X-ray fluorescence analytics. The camera simultaneously records 69696 spectra with an energy resolution of 152 eV for manganese Kα with a spatial resolution of 50 µm over an imaging area of 12.7 × 12.7 mm². It is sensitive to photons in the energy region between 3 and 40 keV, limited by a 50 µm beryllium window, and the sensitive thickness of 450 µm of the chip. Online preview of the sample is possible as the software updates the sums of the counts for certain energy channel ranges during the measurement and displays 2-D false-color maps as well as spectra of selected regions. It also extends the area of our investigations to the copper provenance of Bronze Age artifacts—axes, sickles, and celts—found on Romanian territory. The experiments were performed by micro-SR XRF at BESSY Berlin, at the BAM-line facility. Two types of coins (Koson, with and without monogram) were analysed. The conclusions we reached were that most of the monogram coins are made from refined gold (3–5% Ag, less than 0.5% Cu), while the without monogram coins are made from native Transylvanian gold (9–20% Ag, 0.5–2% Cu), of alluvial origin, proved by the presence of Sn, Sb and Te embedded in the gold. The problem of provenance for prehistoric Romanian copper and bronze objects consists in linking their elemental compositional patterns to the ones of the Bronze Age regional mines from Bulgaria, Serbia or Transylvania, most likely used as ore sources for their manufacture. The studied samples present relevant traces of As, Ag, Sb, and Co, suggesting the most probable use of copper from Serbia or northern Bulgaria for their manufacture. In the last few years, Bayesian optimization (BO) with Gaussian processes (GP) has been introduced as a transformative method in this setting. This contribution highlights the integration and impact of BO and GP in refining BAMline operations. We will explore the impact of integrating Bayesian methods, especially when combined with Gaussian processes, on the operational efficiency of the BAMline. Our discussion commences with an overview of the fundamental concepts of active learning and optimization. This is followed by an in-depth analysis of specific case studies, drawing on our direct experience with these innovative methods. For this our focus is on three key applications: Alignment of Optical Elements (DCM and DMM): The implementation of Bayesian optimization using Gaussian processes has revolutionized the alignment process for the Double Crystal Monochromator (DCM) and the Double Multilayer Monochromator (DMM). This approach greatly reduced manual effort and enhanced the efficiency and effectiveness of the alignment procedure. Optimal Spot Selection for Spatial Mapping in XRF Studies: In X-ray fluorescence (XRF) experiments, determining the most informative sampling spots is crucial. The introduction of BO, informed by GP, has significantly improved the selection process, especially in large or heterogeneous samples. This methodology ensures maximum information gain, optimizing the balance between comprehensive mapping and resource management. Selection of Optimal Energies for XANES Measurements in GEXANES Geometry: In the specific context of X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES) studies using Grazing Exit (GEXANES) geometry, the Bayesian approach with Gaussian processes is now utilized to identify the most effective energy settings. This results in detailed spectral data acquired in a much shorter time. We also address challenges and limitations encountered during implementation. Additionally, the versatility of this approach in addressing a range of different research questions will be demonstrated. A basic introduction about the creation and special properties of synchrotron radiation will be given. Examples of current work at BAMline, the high-energy measuring facility of the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing at the synchrotron BESSY, are used to illustrate the possibilities and limitations of existing measuring methods.” T2 - GDCH Kolloquium CY - Clausthal-Zellerfeld, Germany DA - 17.11.2022 KW - Synchrotron KW - BAMline KW - XRF KW - XANES PY - 2022 AN - OPUS4-61706 LA - eng AD - Bundesanstalt fuer Materialforschung und -pruefung (BAM), Berlin, Germany ER - TY - CONF A1 - Radtke, Martin T1 - Trace element analysis with synchrotron radiation N2 - Trace elements are chemical elements whose concentration in a material is very low. The exact definition depends on the application and varies for example between 100 micrograms per gram in analytical chemistry and 1000 micrograms per gram in geology. The ability to detect trace elements fast and quantitatively is of great importance in many areas of science and technology. With its high brilliance and flexibility in the excitation conditions, synchrotron radiation is an ideal tool for detecting traces even in small sample quantities. In this contribution I will report about the use of X-ray fluorescence(XRF)for qualitative and quantitative element sensitiveanalysis. In addition to the fundamentals of XRF and its quantification methods, the advantages and problems of different geometries like e.g. microXRF, Total Reflection X-ray Fluorescence (TXRF)or Double Dispersive XRF (D²XRF) will be discussed. Practical examples from BAMline from the research fields of medicine, geology and archaeometry will complete the lecture. A1 - Görner, Wolf T1 - Quantification of energy dispersive SRXRF for the certification of reference materials at BAMline N2 - The certification of reference materials (CRMs) is one of the main tasks of the BAM Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing. In this context CRMs for analytical chemistry play the dominant role. Traditionally, energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) has been excluded from the final certification scheme. It has lacked the proof to be reliable enough due to peak overlapping and risks of incorrect background subtraction leading to unacceptable uncertainty and bias of the results. The development described aims at enabling ED-SRXRF to really contribute to certification by the aid of synchrotron radiation. This has been partly shown for macrocontents and has been successfully demonstrated for trace elements and thin layers. The method is based on a combination of measurements of pure elements or stoichiometric compounds as comparator materials and Monte Carlo simulations. Measurements have been performed at the BAMline, the hard X-ray beam line of the BAM at the synchrotron BESSY II in Berlin.
