T1 - Characterization of the silver coins of the Hoard of Becin by x-ray based methods N2 - Four hundred sixteen silver coins stemming from the Ottoman Empire (16th and 17th centuries) were analyzed in order to confirm the fineness of the coinage as well as to study the provenance of the alloy used for the coins. As most of the coins showed the typical green patina on their surfaces due to corrosion processes which have led to the depletion of copper in the near-surface domains of the silver coins in comparison to their core composition, small samples by cutting splinters from the coins had to be taken, embedded in synthetic resin and cross-sectioned in order to investigate the true-heart metal composition. The type of the alloy was investigated as well as if coins minted in different locations demonstrated homogeneous traits concerning the predominant impurities which could suggest a common ore. Several X-ray based techniques (µ-XRF, µ-SRXRF and µ-PIXE) could be applied in order to determine the silver contents as well as the minor and trace elements. Finally, SEM/EDX was applied in order to study the homogeneity/heterogeneity of the coins and the presence of surface enrichments. In general, the silver content of the analyzed specimen varies between 90% and 95%. These outcomes have not supported the historical interpretations, which predict that during the period studied a debasement of approximately 44% of the silver content of the coins should have occurred. It consists of a high-speed CCD detector coupled to a polycapil-lary optic that conducts the X-ray photons from the probe to distinct pixels onto the detector. The camera is capable of fast acquisition of spatially and energy resolved fluorescence images. A dedicated software enables the acquisition and the online processing of the spectral data for all 69696 pixels, leading to a real-time visualization of the elements distribution in a sample. It was developed in a joint project with BAM, IFG Berlin and PN Sensors. In this contribution we will mainly discuss the use of the CXC at our beamline, the BAMline at BESSY II and imaging applications of the CXC from different areas, like biology and archaeometry. Additionally new developments for the use of the detector without optics, like wavelength dispersive detection or 1shot-XANES, will be presented. First analyses with X-ray fluorescence (XRF) revealed gold of an unusually high purity grade, which was explained by using cementation techniques. A newer analysis with laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA–ICP–MS) indicated an even higher purity. These analytical results were the starting point of an ongoing discussion. The amount and type of the detected contaminants were highly controversial and led to contradictory interpretations. We reanalysed 11 gold samples with synchrotron radiation induced X-ray fluorescence (SRXRF) at the BAMline at BESSY-II. To reach the desired detection limits a thorough analysis with three different excitation energies and detection conditions were applied to confirm or disprove the previous results. In this contribution we will get into the details for the need of the different measurement conditions and the virtues of the use of synchrotron radiation. The use and effectiveness of cementation techniques will be addressed. Finally we will present the achieved results and their impact on the discussion. Excellent agreement between the results of the different independent methods was found. In the present work, the measurements of the homogeneity of the areal density of Sb, previously determined with RBS in spots having 1 mm diameter, are improved with synchrotron X-ray fluorescence analysis: Higher precision in even smaller sample spots allows to estimate a reduced inhomogeneity of the whole batch of samples of the order of only 0.4%. Thus the uncertainty of the certified value can further be reduced. Down to fractions of a chip with 0.3×0.4 mm2 area, the areal density is now certified as (4.81±0.06)×1016 Sb atoms/cm2, where the expanded uncertainty 0.06 (coverage factor k=2) corresponds to only 1.2%. The relative merits of the different analytical methods are discussed. One prominent artifact is the Sky Disc of Nebra, which presented a relatively straightforward question to be addressed: Do the gold inlays belong together, and can we glean insights about their origin? In contrast, the analysis of the Bernstorf gold, an alleged Bronze Age treasure composed of exceptionally pure gold, posed a more intricate challenge. The debate surrounding its authenticity prompted an in-depth investigation utilizing SR XRF with different experimental conditions. This approach, involving the analysis of trace elements, played a pivotal role in elucidating the nature and age of the gold, offering valuable insights into its production Platinum emerges as a crucial trace element for gold analysis, given its typically low concentration in gold artifacts, often in the range of a few parts per million (ppm). Accurately measuring Platinum in the presence of overlapping emission lines from gold is arduous. To overcome this challenge, BAMline developed a wavelength dispersive set-up known as D2XRF, employing a pixelated energy-dispersive X-ray detector (pnCCD). This innovative approach enables the resolution of overlapping emission lines, leading to a remarkable detection limit of 1 ppm for Platinum in gold samples. Furthermore, the application of the pnCCD for imaging element distributions on a Phoenician ivory artifact will be showcased. This technique allows for the visualization and mapping of various elements, which opens the possibility to reconstruct the original appearance. The comprehensive analysis of ancient gold artifacts at BAMline has provided valuable insights into the craftsmanship, trade, and technological advancements of ancient civilizations. By unraveling the complex stories these artifacts carry, our studies contributed significantly to the fields of archaeology, history, and materials science. It underscores the importance of interdisciplinary approaches in piecing together the puzzle of human history, revealing the interconnectedness of cultures through the lens of non-destructive analysis.
