T1 - High Quality Crystalline VN Thin Films via MOCVD from a New Vanadium Precursor: Linking Growth Chemistry to Functional Catalytic Surfaces N2 - Vanadium nitride (VN) has been identified as a promising material for numerous applications including electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (eNRR). For such applications, catalyst nanoengineering will help to experimentally test its theoretically predicted eNRR activity, but the majority of investigated VN catalysts are prepared by fabrication methods that do not allow for nanoengineering to the required degree. Herein, we report on a new metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) process for the growth of high quality, facetted and crystalline VN thin films relevant for eNRR applications. N,N’-diisopropylformamidinato [V(dpfamd)3] was identified as a promising precursor as it possesses favorable thermal properties relevant for MOCVD. The application of [V(dpfamd)3] in a MOCVD process with NH3 as co-reactant yielded crystalline VN thin films on Si substrates with high compositional purity. With the potential of using the catalytic activity of VN towards eNRR, the structure-property correlation is of relevance and in this context, the thin films were subjected to complementary analysis including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Rutherford backscattering spectrometry in combination with nuclear reaction analysis (RBS/NRA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Based on the observation of the significant influence NH3 has on the growth characteristics, we conducted first principles density functional theory (DFT) simulations of the precursor reactivity in the absence and presence of NH3 towards VN, supporting experimental findings of energetically more favorable decomposition of [V(dpfamd)3] to VN in the presence of NH3. Process transfer from Si to conductive Ti substrates, relevant for prospective electrochemical testing, revealed comparable VN thin film properties rendering these films promising for further investigation of eNRR applications in follow up studies. The assessment of results shows that stucco masters in those periods exerted control over the setting process of the gypsum-paste and its microstructure by adjusting water-to-plaster ratio, fine-clay addition, and by means of mechanical processing. Furthermore, the presence of anhydrite in the composition of stucco decorations located in the hot-desert climate of Iran provides evidence for the probability of gypsum-anhydrite transition, which has technical and preservation consequences for this less-investigated type of cultural materials. T1 - Morphological and mechanical investigations of bariumalumoborosilicate glass surfaces processed with 700-fs laser pulses N2 - We present surface micro-modifications of bariumalumoborosilicate glasses with a high transformation temperature near 700 °C. Laser processing of the glass substrate was realized by using ultra-short laser pulses at 800 nm. The morphological conversion of the laser-treated surfaces was characterized by scanning force microscopy and nano-indentation. A hardness increase by at least a factor of six on the laser ablation crater edge relative to illuminated non- ablated areas shows that the material in the crater walls underwent drastic morphological and mechanical changes. In this heat- and shock-affected zone, the material became more elastic as a result of increased stress. T1 - Mechanic and surface properties of central-venous port catheters after removal: A comparison of polyurethane and Silicon rubber materials N2 - Central venous port devices made of two different polymeric materials, thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)and silicone rubber (SiR), were compared due their material properties. Both naïve catheters as well as catheters after removal from patients were investigated. In lab experiments the influence of various chemo-therapeutic solutions on material properties was investigated, where as the samples after removal were compared according to the implanted time inpatient. The macroscopic, mechanical performance was assessed with dynamic, specially adapted tests for elasticity. The degradation status of the materials was determined with common tools of polymer characterisation, such as infrared spectroscopy, molecular weight measurements and various methods of thermal analysis. The surface morphology was an alysed using scanning electron microscopy. A correlation between material properties and clinical performance was proposed. The surface morphology and chemical composition of the polyurethane catheter materials can potentially result in increased susceptibility of the catheter to bloodstream infections and thrombotic complications. The higher mechanic failure, especially with increasing implantation time of the silicone catheters is related to the lower mechanical performance compared to the polyurethane material as well as loss of barium sulphate filler particles near the surface of the catheter. This results in preformed microscopic notches, which act as predetermined sites of fracture. T1 - Binderless-cBN as cutting material for ultra-precision machining of stainless steel N2 - The ultra–precision cutting of steel materials is possible but needs modifications of machine tools or the workpiece material. One approach of actual research is the development of cutting materials that gives the opportunity for direct cutting of surfaces with ultra–precision quality. Binderless–cBN is here one of the most promising materials. The paper shows results of experimental studies with binderless–cBN as cutting material while turning stainless steel. Various investigations were carried out to determine the wear mechanisms. Furthermore, measurements are shown regarding the surface quality. The achieved results show the high potential ofbinderless–cBN as cutting material for the machining of steel. T1 - Detection of slipping soil areas with embedded tiny vertical sensing rods N2 - Critical soil zones where large areas along a shear joint might begin to slip should be recognized. In order to avoid damage, monitoring of such unstable zones is necessary. First, soil movements must be detected as early as possible, second, the amount of deformation should be estimated. Because geodetical methods do not provide information about deformation in the underground in different depths, the only way to come to information from possible shear zones is the installation of deformation measurement systems. A special installation method was developed to bring a long-gauge length measurement system into a borehole and transfer data of soil deformations into an installed sensing rod. The mostly vertically installed sensing rod has an outer diameter of 3 mm to 6 mm and contains several optical fibres. One fibre provides integral strain information along the whole length of the rod. To get this information, the phase difference between the fibre input and output is measured and the change of the total length of the fibre can be derived. This easy and cheap online sensing system delivers an early warning of soil deformations respectively possible slip as well as landslides. In case of warning, the second sensing system based on Fibre Bragg Grating sensors located close to the expected shear zone purposefully. It records resulting deformations in detail. In this study, three main objectives were achieved: a) development of tiny pultruded sensing rods with integrated optical sensor fibres, b) installation technology which enables the integration of the sensing rod during drilling and pile driving, and c) development of a stiff but elastic racking material to fix the rod in the soil and to transfer soil deformation into the stiffer sensing rod. These three aspects including the fibre optical measurement systems are described; results from Press Deformation Test (PDT) are presented. Test results of the fibre optical online system are compared and evaluated with the results of conventional inclinometer measurements as well as numerical modelling. An outlook for further possibilities of usage of this monitoring system is given.
