T1 - Optical PD detection in stress cones of HV cable accessories N2 - Sensitive partial discharge (PD) measurements on HV/EHV cable systems are usually based on electrical or electromagnetic PD detection. Unfortunately, interferences may significantly reduce sensitivity, especially in on-site after-installation testing and, even more, in on-line PD monitoring. This paper deals with optical PD detection, which is absolutely immune to any kind of electromagnetic interference. Optical PD detection necessarily requires transparent or translucent insulation systems to be applicable. Stress cone elements for HV/EHV cable accessories meet the requirements for optical PD detection, if made from transparent silicone elastomers. T1 - Guidelines for the characterization and use of fibre optic sensors - Basic definitions & a proposed standard for FBG-based strain sensors N2 - This paper describes the outcome of two groups which are involved in the specification of guidelines for fibre optic sensors performance and testing. The "Guideline for use of fibre optic sensors" from the COST-299 guideline group, and the "Optical Strain Sensor based on Fibre Bragg Grating" from the GESA guideline group of the VDI - "The Association of German Engineers". Through appropriate specifications and definitions, both guidelines aim at enabling better understanding of fibre optic sensors characteristics and performances. A concise view into the structure of the guidelines is presented, emphasizing important aspects. The English version of the two guidelines will be available in autumn 2009. T1 - Automatically produced FRP beams with embedded FOS in complex geometry: process, material compatibility, micromechanical analysis, and performance tests N2 - The main goal of the presented work was to evolve a multifunctional beam composed out of fiber reinforced plastics (FRP) and an embedded optical fiber with various fiber Bragg grating sensors (FBG). These beams are developed for the use as structural member for bridges or industrial applications. It is now possible to realize large scale cross sections, the embedding is part of a fully automated process and jumpers can be omitted in order to not negatively influence the laminate. The development includes the smart placement and layout of the optical fibers in the cross section, reliable strain transfer, and finally the coupling of the embedded fibers after production. Micromechanical tests and analysis were carried out to evaluate the performance of the sensor. The work was funded by the German ministry of economics and technology (funding scheme ZIM). Next to the authors of this contribution, Melanie Book with Röchling Engineering Plastics KG (Haren/Germany) and Katharina Frey with SAERTEX GmbH & Co. KG (Saerbeck/Germany) were part of the research group. Deren Bewertung bzgl. Tragverhalten bzw. Reinforced concrete piles are often used for structures on non-sufficiently bearing soil areas. Assessment of bearing capacity and bearing behaviour of large concrete piles remains a difficult task under specific soil conditions and pile geometries. Usually static and dynamic pile tests are carried out for quality assurance. From dynamic measurements taken only from the pile head, the bearing behaviour and structural integrity can be derived using the one-dimensional theory of wave propagation. More precise information about the pile features can be achieved by highly resolving fibre-optic sensors based on Fabry-Perot technology, distributed over several locations along the pile length. Small scale piles and real driven piles have been tested. This paper describes the sensor, the sensor installation, and experimental results of tests in laboratory as well as test results for recording the wave propagation in the small scale piles. T1 - Monitoring of corrosion protection in reinforced concrete structures using an integrated pH optode N2 - Corrosion in steel-reinforced concrete structures is a critical issue. Corrosion appears if the pH value of the concrete matrix decreases due to deterioration of the Calcium hydroxide layer on the Steel surface. The safest Information about potential danger of Steel corrosion is the knowledge of the pH value of concrete. The paper presents a Tiber optic pH sensor for long-term monitoring of the pH value of reinforced concrete structures at risk from corrosion. The sensor probe is small (about 8 mm in diameter), can be embedded into the concrete matrix and observe changes in pH over years. Several sensor probes can be staggered to detect the progression of pH decrease. The pH values can be resolved with 0.1 to 0.2 pH value in the ränge between 12.0 and 9.5. The structure of the pH measurement System, longterm test results and the design to achieve stable probes will be explained. Experienee from test applications of pH sensors embedded in grouted anchors and in concrete components for a cooling tower will be presented.
