T1 - Explosive cutting of pipelines for the determination of materials properties N2 - Incidents in the past already showed that pipelines transporting compressible fluids are in risk of suffering propagating ductile fractures in case of damages to the pipes. Therefore, the knowledge of the fracture properties of pipeline steels is of high importance. Commonly the properties are determined in laboratory scale, but these do not fully correspond with full-scale fracture behaviour especially at dynamic conditions when highly pressurized gases are released during the crack propagation. This paper describes so-called West Jefferson Tests and Midscale-Tests in which pipelines under pressure were cut with an explosive charge to initiate the crack propagation.
