T1 - Multivalent grafting of hyperbranched oligo- and polyglycerols shielding rough membranes to mediate hemocompatibility N2 - Hemocompatible materials are needed for internal and extracorporeal biomedical applications, which should be realizable by reducing protein and thrombocyte adhesion to such materials. Polyethers have been demonstrated to be highly efficient in this respect on smooth surfaces. Here, we investigate the grafting of oligo- and polyglycerols to rough poly(ether imide) membranes as a polymer relevant to biomedical applications and show the reduction of protein and thrombocyte adhesion as well as thrombocyte activation. It could be demonstrated that, by performing surface grafting with oligo- and polyglycerols of relatively high polydispersity (>1.5) and several reactive groups for surface anchoring, full surface shielding can be reached, which leads to reduced protein adsorption of albumin and fibrinogen. In addition, adherent thrombocytes were not activated. This could be clearly shown by immunostaining adherent proteins and analyzing the thrombocyte covered area. The presented work provides an important strategy for the development of application relevant hemocompatible 3D structured materials. T1 - A Generalized Method for High-Speed Fluorination of Metal Oxides by Spark Plasma Sintering Yields Ta3O7F and TaO2F with High Photocatalytic Activity for Oxygen Evolution from Water N2 - A general method to carry out the fluorination of metal oxides with poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE, Teflon) waste by spark plasma sintering (SPS) on a minute scale with Teflon is reported. The potential of this new approach is highlighted by the following results. i) The tantalum oxyfluorides Ta3O7F and TaO2F are obtained from plastic scrap without using toxic or caustic chemicals for fluorination. ii) Short reaction times (minutes rather than days) reduce the process time the energy costs by almost three orders of magnitude. iii) The oxyfluorides Ta3O7F and TaO2F are produced in gram amounts of nanoparticles. Their synthesis can be upscaled to the kg range with industrial sintering equipment. iv) SPS processing changes the catalytic properties: while conventionally prepared Ta3O7F and TaO2F show little catalytic activity, SPS-prepared Ta3O7F and TaO2F exhibit high activity for photocatalytic oxygen evolution, reaching photoconversion efficiencies up to 24.7% and applied bias to photoconversion values of 0.86%. This study shows that the materials properties are dictated by the processing which poses new challenges to understand and predict the underlying factors. T1 - High-speed solid state fluorination of Nb2O5 yields NbO2F and Nb3O7F with photocatalytic activity for oxygen evolution from water N2 - Solid state reactions are slow because the diffusion of atoms or ions through the reactant, intermediate and crystalline product phases is the rate-limiting step. This requires days or even weeks of high temperature treatment, and consumption of large amounts of energy. We employed spark-plasma sintering, an engineering technique that is used for high-speed consolidation of powders with a pulsed Electric current passing through the sample to carry out the fluorination of niobium oxide in minute intervals. The approach saves time and large amounts of waste energy. Moreover, it allows the preparation of fluorinated niobium oxides on a gram scale using poly (tetrafluoroethylene) (®Teflon) scrap and without toxic chemicals. The synthesis can be upscaled easily to the kg range with appropriate sintering equipment. Finally, NbO2F and Nb3O7F prepared by spark plasma sintering show significant photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) oxygen evolution from water in terms of photocurrent density and incident photon-to-current Efficiency (% IPCE), whereas NbO2F and Nb3O7F prepared by conventional high temperature chemistry show little to no PEC response. Our study is a proof of concept for the quick, clean and energy saving production of valuable photocatalysts from plastic waste. CeO2 nanoparticles with diameters of 10–15 nm and lengths of 100–200 nm for this application were prepared by oxidizing aqueous dispersions of Ce(OH)3 with H2O2 in the presence of nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) as the capping agent. The surface-functionalized water-dispersible CeO2 nanorods showed high catalytic activity in the halogenation reactions, which makes them highly efficient functional mimics of haloperoxidases. These enzymes are used in nature to prevent the formation of biofilms through the halogenation of signaling compounds that interfere with bacterial cell–cell communication (“quorum sensing”). Bacteria-repellent CeO2/polycarbonate plates were prepared by dip-coating plasma-treated polycarbonate plates in aqueous CeO2 particle dispersions. The quasi-enzymatic activity of the CeO2 coating was demonstrated using phenol red enzyme assays. The monolayer coating of CeO2 nanorods (1.6 µg cm−2) and the bacteria repellent properties were demonstrated by atomic force microscopy, biofilm assays, and fluorescence measurements. The engineered polymer surfaces have the ability to repel biofilms as green antimicrobials on plastics, where H2O2 is present in humid environments such as automotive parts, greenhouses, or plastic containers for rainwater. Here, we demonstrate the application of neutron darkfield imaging byTalbot-Lau type grating interferometry to fiber reinforced plastics. Common carbon and glass fiber composites have been investigated including characteristic damage structures. The darkfield images show a strong signal response caused by fiber delamination, suitable fiber direction, particles, pores and cracks. The basic principles of neutron darkfield imaging applied to fiber composites are highlighted. A1 - Bruno, Giovanni T1 - Stress-induced microcrack density evolution in β-eucryptite ceramics: Experimental observations and possible route to strain hardening N2 - In order to investigate their microcracking behaviour, the microstructures of several β-eucryptite ceramics, obtained from glass precursor and cerammed to yield different grain sizes and microcrack densities, were characterized by laboratory and synchrotron x-ray refraction and tomography. Results were compared with those obtained from scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In SEM images, the characterized materials appeared fully dense but computed tomography showed the presence of pore clusters. Uniaxial tensile testing was performed on specimens while strain maps were recorded and analyzed by Digital Image Correlation (DIC). X-ray refraction techniques were applied on specimens before and after tensile testing to measure the amount of the internal specific surface (i.e., area per unit volume). X-ray refraction revealed that (a) the small grain size (SGS) material contained a large specific surface, originating from the grain boundaries and the interfaces of TiO2 precipitates; (b) the medium (MGS) and large grain size (LGS) materials possessed higher amounts of specific surface compared to SGS material due to microcracks, which decreased after tensile loading; (c) the precursor glass had negligible internal surface. The unexpected decrease in the internal surface of MGS and LGS after tensile testing is explained by the presence of compressive regions in the DIC strain maps and further by theoretical arguments. It is suggested that while some microcracks merge via propagation, more close mechanically, thereby explaining the observed X-ray refraction results. The mechanisms proposed would allow the development of a strain hardening route in ceramics. Young's moduli and Poisson's ratios were determined on similar to 215- to 380-mu m-thick machined samples by combining digital image correlation and microtensile loading. The results provide evidence for an increase in microcrack density and decrease of Young's modulus due to machining of the thin samples extracted from diesel particulate filter honeycombs. This result is in contrast to the known effect of machining on the strength distribution of bulk, monolithic ceramics. T1 - Protein refolding is required for assembly of the type three secretion needle N2 - Pathogenic Gram-negative bacteria use a type three secretion system (TTSS) to deliver virulence factors into host cells. Although the order in which proteins incorporate into the growing TTSS is well described, the underlying assembly mechanisms are still unclear. Here we show that the TTSS needle protomer refolds spontaneously to extend the needle from the distal end. We developed a functional mutant of the needle protomer from Shigella flexneri and Salmonella typhimurium to study its assembly in vitro. We show that the protomer partially refolds from α-helix into β-strand conformation to form the TTSS needle. Reconstitution experiments show that needle growth does not require ATP. Thus, like the structurally related flagellar systems, the needle elongates by subunit polymerization at the distal end but requires protomer refolding. Our studies provide a starting point to understand the molecular assembly mechanisms and the structure of the TTSS at atomic level. T1 - Correction approach of detector backlighting in radiography N2 - In various kinds of radiography, deficient transmission imaging may occur due to backlighting inside the detector itself arising from light or radiation scattering. The related intensity mismatches barely disturb the high resolution contrast, but its long range nature results in reduced attenuation levels which are often disregarded. Based on X-ray observations and an empirical formalism, a procedure is developed for a first order correction of detector backlighting. A backlighting factor is modeled as a function of the relative detector coverage by the sample projection. Different cases of sample transmission are regarded at different backlight factors and detector coverage. The additional intensity of backlighting may strongly affect the values of materials’ attenuation up to a few 10%. The presented scenario provides a comfortable procedure for corrections of X-ray or neutron transmission imaging data. T1 - A dendritic amphiphile for efficient control of biomimetic calcium phosphate mineralization N2 - The phase behavior of a dendritic amphiphile containing a Newkome-type dendron as the hydrophilic moiety and a cholesterol unit as the hydrophobic segment is investigated at the air–liquid interface. The amphiphile forms stable monomolecular films at the air–liquid interface on different subphases. Furthermore, the mineralization of calcium Phosphate beneath the monolayer at different calcium and phosphate concentrations versus mineralization time shows that at low calcium and Phosphate concentrations needles form, whereas flakes and spheres dominate at higher concentrations. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electron diffraction confirm the formation of calcium phosphate. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction confirm the predominant formation of octacalcium phosphate and hydroxyapatite. The data also indicate that the final products form via a complex multistep reaction, including an association step, where nano-needles aggregate into larger flake-like objects. T1 - Missing wedge computed tomography by iterative algorithm DIRECTT N2 - A strategy to mitigate typical reconstruction artefacts in missing wedge computed tomography is presented. These artefacts appear as elongations of reconstructed details along the mean direction (i.e. the symmetry centre of the projections). Although absent in standard computed tomography applications, they are most prominent in advanced electron tomography and also in special topics of X-ray and Neutron tomography under restricted geometric boundary conditions. We investigate the Performance of the DIRECTT (Direct Iterative Reconstruction of Computed Tomography Trajectories) algorithm to reduce the directional artefacts in standard procedures. In order to be sensitive to the anisotropic nature of missing wedge artefacts, we investigate isotropic substructures of metal foam as well as circular disc models. Comparison is drawn to filtered backprojection and algebraic techniques. Reference is made to reconstructions of complete data sets. For the purpose of assessing the reconstruction Quality, Fourier transforms are employed to visualize the missing wedge directly. Deficient reconstructions of disc models are evaluated by a length-weighted boundary orientations. T1 - Charakterisierung von Katalysatormaterialien für Brennstoffzellen mittels Elektronentomografie N2 - Zur Optimierung moderner Katalysatoren für Brennstoffzellen werden diese elektronen-tomografisch charakterisiert. Die Elektronentomografie ermöglicht einzigartige Einblicke in die Nanometer-Strukturen der metallischen Katalysatorpartikel, die auf einem elektrisch leitenden, inerten Kohlenstoffträger abgeschieden werden. Die dreidimensional bildgebende Methode ermöglicht über qualitative Untersuchungen hinaus detaillierte quantitative Form- und Strukturanalysen der Katalysatormaterialien. So werden beispielsweise die Positionen der Katalysatorpartikel relativ zum Trägermaterial analysiert. Ihre Form und Einbettung in den Träger, welche die für die katalytische Reaktion maßgebliche "freie Oberfläche" definieren, werden bestimmt. Die Elektronentomografie ermöglicht somit quantitative Vergleiche zwischen verschiedenen Katalysatormaterialien und Herstellungsverfahren. Sie erweitert die Möglichkeiten der Korrelation gewünschter elektrochemischer Eigenschaften mit der Nanostruktur dieser Materialien und macht so weitere Optimierungen der Katalysatormaterialien möglich. T1 - Reduzierung von Missing-Wedge-Artefakten der CT mit DIRECTT N2 - Typische 'Missing Wedge'(MW)-Artefakte in Rekonstruktionen der Computertomografie können mit dem iterativen DIRECTT-Algorithmus (Direkte iterative Rekonstruktion computertomografischer Trajektorien) unterdrückt werden. Die durch fehlende Projektionswinkel bedingten MW-Restriktionen betreffen bisher nur Sonderapplikationen der Röntgen- und Neutronentomografie, müssen in der Nanometer auflösenden Elektronentomografie jedoch als Standard akzeptiert werden. Die MW-Artefakte werden besonders effektiv mit einer spezifischen DIRECTT-Prozedur partiell diskreter Zwischenlösungen beseitigt. Für die Beurteilung der Abbildungsqualität werden Rekonstruktionen von vollständigen und unvollständigen Mess- und Modell-Datensätzen erzeugt und mit Ergebnissen anderer Algorithmen (gefilterte Rückprojektion (FBP) und ART-Methoden) verglichen. Die Fourier-Transformierten der Rekonstruktionen demonstrieren die erfolgreiche Ergänzung der fehlenden Information im MW-Bereich. Die quantitative Bewertung der lokalen Rekonstruktionsqualität mit Methoden der räumlichen Statistik ergibt auch für unterschiedliche Signal-Rausch-Verhältnisse signifikante Vorteile gegenüber FBP und ART. Weiss over a century ago. Up to now, the three-dimensional (3D) domain structure of bulk magnets has never been observed owing to the lack of appropriate experimental methods. Domain analysis in bulk matter thus remains one of the most challenging tasks in research on magnetic materials. All current domain observation methods are limited to studying surface domains or thin magnetic films. As the properties of magnetic materials are strongly affected by their domain structure, the development of a technique capable of investigating the shape, size and distribution of individual domains in three dimensions is of great importance. Here, we show that the novel technique of Talbot-Lau neutron tomography with inverted geometry enables direct imaging of the 3D network of magnetic domains within the bulk of FeSi crystals. A1 - Görner, Wolf T1 - High resolution synchrotron-based radiography and tomography using hard X-rays at the BAMline (BESSY II) N2 - The use of high brilliance and partial coherent synchrotron light for radiography and computed tomography (CT) allows to image micro-structured, multi-component specimens with different contrast modes and resolutions up to submicrometer range. This is of high interest for materials research, life science and non-destructive evaluation applications. An imaging setup for microtomography and radiography installed at BESSY II (a third generation synchrotron light source located in Berlin, Germany) as part of its first hard X-ray beamline (BAMline) can now be used for absorption, refraction as well as phase contrast — dedicated to inhouse research and applications by external users. Monochromatic synchrotron light between 6 keV and 80 keV is attained via a fully automated double multilayer monochromator. For imaging applications the synchrotron beam transmitted by the sample is converted with a scintillator into visible light. By use of microscope optics this luminescence image is then projected onto, e.g., a CCD chip. Several scintillating materials are used in order to optimise the performance of the detector system. Different optical systems are available for imaging ranging from a larger field of view and moderate resolutions (macroscope — up to 14 mm x 14 mm field of view) to high resolution (microscope — down to 0.35 μm pixel size), offering magnifications from 1.8× to 40×. Additionally asymmetric cut Bragg crystals in front of the scintillator can be used for a further magnification in one dimension by a factor of about 20. Slow and fast cameras are available, with up to 16 bit dynamic range. We show the suitability of the setup for numerous applications from materials research and life science. Für die Optimierung der Brennstoffzellentechnik ist es erforderlich, die während des Zellbetriebs ablaufenden Prozesse zu verstehen und exakt zu charakterisieren. Ein ausbalanciertes Wassermanagement ist die Grundlage für die optimale Leistungsfähigkeit einer wasserstoffbetriebenen Zelle. Das während des Betriebs entstehende Wasser muss die Membran ausreichend befeuchten, um deren Protonenleitfähigkeit aufrechtzuerhalten. Andererseits behindern zu große Wasseransammlungen in der Zelle die Gaszufuhr durch die porösen Materialien sowie in den Kanälen der Gasverteilerstrukturen. Alterungsphänomene einzelner Zellkomponenten können die Verteilung der Wasseransammlungen und somit das Wassermanagement empfindlich stören und so die Leistungsfähigkeit der Brennstoffzelle herabsetzen. Zur Analyse der Wasserverteilung werden zerstörungsfreie, bildgebende Methoden, wie die Ex-situ-Neutronentomografie und die In-situ-Synchrotronradiografie, eingesetzt. Die gleichzeitige Abbildung von Materialien sehr unterschiedlicher Dichten (Ordnungszahlen) ist eine wiederkehrende Herausforderung für die Radiologie und die Computertomographie mit Röntgenstrahlung. Die Messungen ergeben asymmetrische Projektionsprofile für Sinogramme der Streuintensität. Am Beispiel verschiedener Polymere (Polyethylen, Polyamid, PVC), Glas und Holz wird in den Tomogrammen ein hochaufgelöster 'Comptonkontrast' vergleichbarer Dynamik erreicht, während der simultan gemessene 'Absorptionskontrast' ausschließlich die starken Absorber (Glas und PVC) zeigt. The applications range from fibre reinforced plastics to biological tissues. These techniques comprise, among others, X-ray refraction topography, diffraction enhanced imaging, phase contrast imaging, Talbot-Lau grating interferometry, and refraction enhanced imaging. They all make use of selective beam deflections up to a few minutes of arc: the X-ray refraction effect. In contrast to diffraction, this type of interaction has a 100 % scattering cross section, as shown experimentally. Since X-ray refraction is very sensitive to the orientation of interfaces, it is additionally a tool to detect, e.g., fibre or pore orientation. If the detector resolution exceeds the size of (small) individual features, one detects the integral information (of inner surfaces) within the gauge volume. We describe the above-mentioned techniques, and show their experimental implementation in the lab and at a synchrotron source. We also show strategies for data processing and quantitative analysis. The specific scope of this study is to image transversal flaws within the foam core (joints) and of single ply overlaps. Test flaws were purposely implemented in order to simulate typical failure under cyclic load. In a dedicated test rig for shell structures, the flaw evolution/propagation is monitored by thermography and optical 3D inspection of deformation. Due to the unfavourable preconditions for classical computed tomography as of large aspect ratio, the samples were investigated by coplanar translational laminography. Its limited range of observation angles of ± 45°, results in anisotropic artefacts about the normal to the sample surface, but the typical flaws are well visualized in the as-prepared state, in a state of early damage, and in the repaired state. Through the use of a dedicated (and simple) segmentation algorithm, it is shown how to exploit the information yielded by 3D X-ray computed tomography data to quantify the morphological anisotropy. It is also correlated that such anisotropy of the pore space Such anisotropy of the pore space is also correlated with the microstructure and crystallographic anisotropy of the material in several showcases: a microstructurally isotropic material, such as SiC, and some morphologically and microstructurally anisotropic cordierite materials. In a basic laboratory set-up for simultaneous perpendicular Compton scattering and direct beam attenuation tomography are conducted by single channel photon counting line scans. This results in asymmetric distortions of the projection profiles of the scattering CT data set. In a first approach, corrections of Compton scattering data by taking advantage of rotational symmetry yield tomograms without major geometric artefacts. A cylindrical sample composed of PE, PA, PVC, glass and wood demonstrates similar Compton contrast for all the substances, while the conventional absorption tomogram only reveals the two high order materials. Comparison to neutron tomography reveals astonishing similarities except for the glass component (without hydrogen). Therefore, Compton CT offers the potential to replace neutron tomography, which requires much more efforts. T1 - Three-dimensional imaging of magnetic domains with neutron grating interferometry N2 - This paper gives a brief overview on3D imaging of magnetic domains with shearing grating neutron tomography. We investigated the three-dimensional distribution of magnetic domain walls in the bulk of a wedge-shaped FeSi single crystal. The width of the magnetic domains wasanalyzed at different locations within the crystal. Magnetic domains close to the tip of the wedge are much smaller than in the bulk. Furthermore, the three-dimensional shape of individual domains wasinvestigated. We discuss prospects and limitations of the applied measurement technique. T1 - Reduzierung von Missing-Wedge-Artefakten mit DIRECTT N2 - Wir stellen eine Prozedur vor, mit der typische 'Missing Wedge' (MW)-Artefakte in CT-Rekonstruktionen effektiv unterdrückt werden können. Dazu wird der iterative DIRECTT-Algorithmus (Direkte Iterative Rekonstruktion Computertomographischer Trajektorien) mit einigen Zyklen diskreter Rekonstruktion eingesetzt. Die Kernfunktionen des Algorithmus', die wiederholte Auswahl und Gewichtung von Elementen einer Zwischenkonstruktion, werden beibehalten. Abgesehen von Sonderfällen der Röntgen- und Neutronentomographie tritt die MW-Restriktion (neben einer Vielzahl anderer) in Standardkonfigurationen der Elektronentomographie auf. Um den MW-Effekt isoliert zu untersuchen und beurteilen zu können, werden hier vollständige experimentelle Datensätze einer bekannten Porenstruktur um einen Sektor beschnitten sowie MW-Rekonstruktionen von Porenmodellen erzeugt. Die Ergebnisse werden mit zurzeit verbreiteten Algorithmen (Gefilterte Rückprojektion (FBP) und ART-Varianten) verglichen. Die Bewertung im Fourierraum zeigt, dass DIRECTT die fehlende Information im MW erfolgreich ergänzt. Zur quantitativen Bewertung der lokalen Rekonstruktionsqualität werden Methoden der räumlichen Statistik eingesetzt. T1 - Reconstruction of limited view tomography data by DIRECTT N2 - Incomplete tomographic data sets such as limited view (missing wedge) data represent a well-known challenge for reconstruction algorithms, since they unavoidably lead to substantial image artefacts. Such data sets may occur in industrial computed tomography of limited access (e.g. extended components, fixed objects), directional opacity, limited sample life time or laminographic set-up. We present strategies to effectively suppress the typical elongation artefacts (e.g. lemon-like deformed pores) by our iterative algorithm DIRECTT which offers the opportunity to vary the versatile reconstruction parameters within each cycle. Those strategies are applied to experimental data obtained from metallic foams as well as model simulations. Comparison is drawn to state-ofthe-art techniques (filtered backprojection and algebraic techniques). Further reference is made to reconstructions of complete data sets serving as gold standards. For quantitative assessment of the reconstruction quality adapted techniques based on spatial statistics are introduced.
