Water glass was cast onto these 0.5 µm plasma thick siloxane-like layers with a thickness of 5 to 40 µm. The adhesion of these bilayer systems and their flame resistance were tested. The effect of different plasma parameters such as monomer/gas ratio, pressure and power input into the discharge on the deposition rate and the composition of the formed layers was studied. Characterization and chemical composition of the formed films were performed using infrared, X-ray photoelectron and solid state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Peel strengths of composites were measured and the locus of peel front propagation was detected. Thermal properties of composites were analyzed by thermo-gravimetric analysis. Finally, the fire-retardant properties of thick coated polymers were determined by exposure to flames and the behavior of coatings on the polymers during flaming was observed visually. For this purpose, the nonlinear generation of conduction band electrons in silicon and their relaxation is numerically calculated using a two-temperature model approach including intrapulse changes of optical properties, transport, diffusion and recombination effects. Following the idea that surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) can be excited when the material turns from semiconducting to metallic state, the 'SPP active area' is calculated as function of fluence and double-pulse delay up to several picoseconds and compared to the experimentally observed rippled surface areas. Evidence is presented that multi-photon absorption explains the large increase of the rippled area for temporally overlapping pulses. For longer double-pulse delays, relevant relaxation processes are identified. The results demonstrate that femtosecond LIPSS on silicon are caused by the excitation of SPP and can be controlled by temporal pulse shaping. Ablation threshold fluences were determined from a semi-logarithmic plot of the ablation crater diameter vs. laser fluence. The damage threshold fluence decreases for shorter pulse durations. In the investigated pulse duration range, the measured multi-pulse ablation threshold fluences are practically similar to those of undoped glass material (~1 Jcm-2). That means that the multi-pulse ablation threshold is independent on the doping level of the filters. For more than 100 pulses per spot and all pulse durations applied, the threshold fluence saturates. Laboratory batch and column leaching tests are important tools for determining the release potential of contaminants from soil or waste materials. Batch and column tests were carried out with soils differing in particle size distribution, organic matter content and pH, each spiked with sulfonamides (sulfadimethoxine (SDM), sulfaguanidine (SGD), sulfisoxazole (SX)). In order to test the applicability of leaching tests to polar contaminants batch and column tests were also compared. In the column tests, release was found to depend on the properties of both soil and sulfonamides. The fastest release was observed for coarse-grained soil with the smallest organic matter content (MS soil; 100% decrease in concentration until liquid-to-solid ratio (L/S) of 0.9 L kg-1 for all SAs). The slowest release was established for sulfadimethoxine (24.5% decrease in concentration until L/S 1.22 L kg-1). The results of the batch and column tests were comparable to a large extent, with slightly higher concentrations being obtained in the column test experiments of fine-grained soils with a high organic matter content. Batch and column tests were carried out with soils differing in physicochemical properties, each spiked with cyclophosphamide (CK) or ifosfamide (IF). Moreover, due to the fact that environmental pollutants may occur as coexisting compounds in the soil themobility evaluation for ACDs in the mixture with metoprolol (MET; β-blocker) as a co-contaminant was performed. In order to assess appropriateness, the batch and column tests were compared. The release depended on the properties of both the soil and the presence of co-contaminants. The faster release was observed for coarse-grained soil with the smallest organic matter content (MS soil: 90% decrease in concentration until liquid-to-solid ratio (L/S) of 0.3 L kg−1 for all tests' layout) than for loamy sand (LS soil: 90% decrease in concentration until ratio L/S of 0.75 L kg−1). ACDs are highly mobile in soil systems. Furthermore, the decrease of mobility of ifosfamide was observed with the presence of a co-contaminant (metoprolol) in both of the soils (in MS soil a decrease of 29%; in LS soil a decrease of 26%). The mobility of cyclophosphamide does not depend on the presence of a contaminant for MS soil, but also exhibits a decrease of 21% in LS soil. While these materials have been mainly landfilled, wood ashes may also be utilised for fertilizing and liming purposes on top of soils. Pre-treatments involving hardening or granulation may be carried out prior to soil application. In this study, two Danish wood ash samples were hardened and/or granulated. Lab-hardening induced rapid changes in the shape of the acid neutralisation capacity curve of the ashes. Up-flow column tests, assuming local equilibrium conditions, were employed to investigate the leaching from pre-treated ashes. Granules and loose ashes demonstrated similar leaching behaviours, indicating that similar geochemical processes were governing their leaching. In comparison with untreated fresh ashes, the hardened ashes demonstrated reduced leaching of Ca, Ba, Pb and Zn with concentration levels generally below or close to the analytical limits of quantification; to the contrary, the leaching of As, P, Sb, Si, V and Mg was enhanced in the hardened ashes. The release of alkalinity was reduced by hardening. In general, all granules were barely breakable by finger-pinching and they could withstand one month of continuous leaching, preserving their overall shape. The solubility of phosphorous in neutral ammonium citrate indicated that about 30–51% of the total P content in the ash samples was released, suggesting that the ashes could be potentially valuable as P-fertiliser if applied onto soil. Bezogen auf die etwa 9,4 Mrd Kubikmeter Abwasser, die pro Jahr in Deutschland anfallen, kann von einem Potenzial von 75000 t Phosphor/a (davon ca. 67500 t P/a im Klärschlamm) ausgegangen werden. Bislang werden in der Literatur ca. 37 Verfahren zur abwasserseitigen Rückgewinnung von Phosphor beschrieben, die im Labor, im Technikumsmaßstab oder in Pilotanlagen erprobt worden sind. Weltweit wurden bisher ca. 12 davon großtechnisch umgesetzt. Etwa vier verschiedene Verfahrenstechniken lassen sich derzeit in Deutschland finden. Einige Verfahren arbeiten mit Ionenaustauschern, zum überwiegenden Teil handelt es sich jedoch um Fällungs- oder Kristallisationsverfahren, bei denen Magnesium-Ammonium-Phosphat (MAP, Struvit) entweder aus den Haupt- oder Nebenströmen einer Kläranlage oder aus dem Schlamm bzw. Schlammwasser gewonnen wird. Für den Nährstoff Phosphor konnte in den Klärschlammaschen ein Gehalt von durchschnittlich 7 % ermittelt werden. T1 - Tomografische Methoden für die Brennstoffzellenforschung N2 - Aufgrund des hohen Wirkungsgrades und der vielfältigen Einsatzmöglichkeiten können Brennstoffzellen einen wichtigen Beitrag zur zukünftigen Energieversorgung leisten. Für die Optimierung der Brennstoffzellentechnik ist es erforderlich, die während des Zellbetriebs ablaufenden Prozesse zu verstehen und exakt zu charakterisieren. Ein ausbalanciertes Wassermanagement ist die Grundlage für die optimale Leistungsfähigkeit einer wasserstoffbetriebenen Zelle. Das während des Betriebs entstehende Wasser muss die Membran ausreichend befeuchten, um deren Protonenleitfähigkeit aufrechtzuerhalten. Andererseits behindern zu große Wasseransammlungen in der Zelle die Gaszufuhr durch die porösen Materialien sowie in den Kanälen der Gasverteilerstrukturen. Alterungsphänomene einzelner Zellkomponenten können die Verteilung der Wasseransammlungen und somit das Wassermanagement empfindlich stören und so die Leistungsfähigkeit der Brennstoffzelle herabsetzen. Zur Analyse der Wasserverteilung werden zerstörungsfreie, bildgebende Methoden, wie die Ex-situ-Neutronentomografie und die In-situ-Synchrotronradiografie, eingesetzt. Diese Methoden können während des Brennstoffzellenbetriebs mit weiteren Messverfahren, beispielsweise der ortsaufgelösten Stromdichtemessung, kombiniert werden. Auf diese Weise werden einzelne Komponenten, wie zum Beispiel die Gasdiffusionsschichten, charakterisiert. Daher ist es wichtig, die Prozesse während des Betriebs einer Brennstoffzelle exakt charakterisieren zu können, um diese im nächsten Schritt zu optimieren. So ist ein ausbalanciertes Wassermanagement in einer mit Wasserstoff betriebenen Zelle ausschlaggebend für ihre Leistungsfähigkeit. Für eine dauerhafte Leistungsfähigkeit muss das entstehende Wasser die Membran feucht halten, um so die Protonenleitfähigkeit aufrecht zu erhalten. Zu viel Wasser kann jedoch die Gaszufuhr durch die porösen Materialien in Richtung Membran verhindern. Alterungsphänomene der einzelnen Komponenten können dieses sensible Wassermanagement stören und so die Leistungsfähigkeit einer Brennstoffzelle herabsetzen. Zum tieferen Verständnis der Wasserverteilung werden zerstörungsfreie Methoden, wie zum Beispiel die ex situ Neutronentomografie oder die in situ Synchrotronradiografie eingesetzt. Letztere Methode kann während des Brennstoffzellenbetriebs in Kombination mit weiteren Messmethoden, wie der ortsaufgelösten Stromdichtemessung, eingesetzt werden. T1 - Multimodal ex vivo methods reveal that Gd-rich corrosion byproducts remain at the implant site of biodegradable Mg-Gd screws N2 - Extensive research is being conducted on magnesium (Mg) alloys for bone implant manufacturing, due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability and mechanical properties. Gadolinium (Gd) is among the most promising alloying elements for property control in Mg alloy implants; however, its toxicity is contro- versial. Investigating Gd behavior during implant corrosion is thus of utmost importance. In this study, we analyzed the degradation byproducts at the implant site of biodegradable Mg-5Gd and Mg-10Gd implants after 12 weeks healing time, using a combination of different imaging techniques: histology, energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX), x-ray microcomputed tomography (μCT) and neutron μCT. The main finding has been that, at the healing time in exam, the corrosion appears to have involved only the Mg component, which has been substituted by calcium and phosphorus, while the Gd remains localized at the implant site. This was observed in 2D by means of EDX maps and extended to 3D with a novel application of neutron tomography. X-ray fluorescence analysis of the main excretory organs also did not reveal any measurable accumulation of Gd, further reinforcing the conclusion that very limited or no removal at all of Gd-alloy happened during degradation. T1 - Femtosecond laser-induced surface nanostructures for tribological applications N2 - Laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) were generated on two types of steel (100Cr6, X30CrMoN15-1) and two types of titanium (Ti, Ti6A14V) surfaces upon irradiation with multiple linear polarized femtosecond laser pulses in air environment (pulse duration 30 fs, central wavelength 790 nm, pulse repetition rate 1 kHz, Gaussian beam shape). Teh conditions (laser fluence, spatial spot overlap) were optimized in a sample-scanning geometry for the processing of large surface areas covered homogeneously by two different types of LIPSS - either near wavelength or sub-100 nm structures. The tribological performance of the nanostructured surfaces was characterized under reciprocating sliding at 1 Hz against a ball of hardened steel using different lubricants and normal forces. After 1000 cycles the corresponding wear tracks were characterized by optical and scanning electron microscopy. For specific conditions, the wear was strongly reduced and laser-generated nanostructures endured the tribological treatment. Simultaneously, a significant reduction of the friction coefficient was observed in the laser-irradiated LIPSS-covered areas, indicating the benefit of laser surface structuring for tribological applications. The spatially Gaussian shaped beam used for the laser processing was transformed via beam shaping into a top hat distribution at the surface of the samples for optimization. The tribological performance of the laser-induced nanostructures is discussed on the basis of different physical and chemical mechanisms.
