T1 - Transmission electron microscopy study of rapid thermally annealed Pd/Ge contacts on In0.53Ga0.47As N2 - Phase formation in rapid thermally annealed Pd/Ge contacts on In0.53Ga0.47As has been investigated by means of cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy, convergent-beam electron diffraction, and energy-dispersive x-ray analysis. Solid-phase regrowth is observed to occur similarly as in Pd/Ge contacts on GaAs or InP. The reaction starts at low temperatures with the formation of an amorphous Pd–In–Ga–As layer, which crystallizes at elevated temperatures yielding hexagonal Pd4In0.53Ga0.47As being first described in this work. At temperatures .250 °C, this phase decomposes due to epitaxial solid-phase regrowth of In0.53Ga0.47As and formation of Pd–Ge phases. The stable composition is reached at temperatures .350 °C with excess Ge diffused through top Pd–Ge to the contact interface and growing epitaxially on the semiconductor. T1 - Pt thin-film metallization for FC-bonding using SnPb60/40 solder bump metallurgy N2 - Platinum does not form any adherent oxides and can be easily wetted by tin-based solders. Platinum is also an available metallization in semiconductor laboratories. Therefore we investigated the diffusion of platinum thin-film metallizations into eutectic tin–lead solder by using a high-resolution secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) profiling from the back side. It is shown that an intermetallic phase (PtSn4) is formed during soldering, which controls the consumption of platinum during soldering and in operation. The consumption of platinum follows the well-known parabolic diffusion law. The activation energy of this process is 0.63 eV. Even at extended heating cycles of 2 min at 250°C, 190 nm from the original 300 nm of the platinum film remain undissolved. This high stability makes platinum a very attractive thin-film metallization for flip-chip (FC) bonding of new microsystems. In addition, a simple experimental setup using common laboratory equipment is presented. Experimental results show, for instance, that the measured CPDs between platinum and nickel can be very close to those obtained using sophisticated equipment. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the implemented method, though very simple, is suitable for surface mapping. T1 - Visualization of inflammation in experimental colitis by magnetic resonance imaging using very small superparamagnetic iron oxide particles N2 - Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) comprise mainly ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn´s disease (CD). Both forms present with a chronic inflammation of the (gastro) intestinal tract, which induces excessive changes in the composition of the associated extracellular matrix (ECM). In UC, the inflammation is limited to the colon, whereas it can occur throughout the entire gastrointestinal tract in CD. Tools for early diagnosis of IBD are still very limited and highly invasive and measures for standardized evaluation of structural changes are scarce. To investigate an efficient non-invasive way of diagnosing intestinal inflammation and early changes of the ECM, very small superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (VSOPs) in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were applied in two mouse models of experimental colitis: the dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis and the transfer model of colitis. For further validation of ECM changes and inflammation, tissue sections were analyzed by immunohistochemistry. For in depth ex-vivo investigation of VSOPs localization within the tissue, Europium-doped VSOPs served to visualize the contrast agent by imaging mass cytometry (IMC). VSOPs accumulation in the inflamed colon wall of DSS-induced colitis mice was visualized in T2* weighted MRI scans. Components of the ECM, especially the hyaluronic acid content, were found to influence VSOPs binding. Using IMC, colocalization of VSOPs with macrophages and endothelial cells in colon tissue was shown. In contrast to the DSS model, colonic inflammation could not be visualized with VSOP-enhanced MRI in transfer colitis. VSOPs present a potential contrast agent for contrast-enhanced MRI to detect intestinal inflammation in mice at an early stage and in a less invasive manner depending on hyaluronic acid content. T1 - Friction and wear of PTFE composites at cryogenic temperatures N2 - This paper presents investigations on the tribological behaviour of PTFE composites against steel at cryogenic temperatures. The results showed that the friction coefficient decreases with temperature down to 77 K, but did not follow a linear evolution further down to extreme low temperatures. It can be stated that the cryogenic environment has a significant influence on the tribological performance of the polymer composites. The effect of low temperatures was more clearly detected at low sliding speed, where friction heat is reduced. A change in wear mechanism from adhesive to abrasive was observed in this case. SEM and AFM analyses showed that the PTFE matrix composites investigated under these experimental conditions have transferred material onto the disc down to very low temperatures. Chemical analyses indicate the presence of iron fluorides. A1 - Theiler, Geraldine A1 - Hübner, Wolfgang T1 - Sliding performance of polymer composites in liquid hydrogen and liquid nitrogen N2 - Outstanding features favour the application of polymers and polymer composites in low-temperature technology. The booming hydrogen technology is a challenge for these materials, which are considered as seals and bearings in cryogenic pumps. In the present study, three types of thermoplastics, i.e., polyetheretherketone (PEEK), polyetherimide (PEI) and polyamide 6,6 (PA6,6), and one epoxy were considered as matrix materials. Micron-sized fillers, i.e., short carbon fibres, graphite flakes, and PTFE powders, were incorporated into these polymers together with nano-sized TiO2 particles. Optimised compositions of each matrix were selected from our previous works at room temperature in order to be studied at very low temperature conditions. In particular, frictional tests were carried out with polymer composite pins against polished steel surfaces under constant load over a certain distance in liquid hydrogen and liquid nitrogen. Afterwards, worn surfaces were analysed by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was found out that the tribological properties in liquid hydrogen are dominated by the matrix materials, in particular thermoplastics perform generally slightly better than thermosetting resins. T1 - Mikroplastik in der aquatischen Umwelt - Ein Beitrag zur aktuellen Diskussion in Deutschland N2 - Plastics are important materials in households and industry and therefore a crucial part of our everyday life. Since the beginning of the 1970s the occurrence of plastic particles in coastal waters has been explicitly described. Meanwhile, besides the marine environment, microplastics were also detected in other environmental media, biota and water management facilities. This work gives an overview of the occurrence and first known effects of microplastics in the environment. Furthermore, current scientific proceedings are considered and pending issues are discussed. In this regard it is of central importance to develop an environmentally comprehensive, harmonized scientific proceeding for miroplastics, which enables an evaluation of relevant material flows in adaption to necessary assessment concepts. The main ceramic phase in all cases is Ca10[K/Na](PO4)7 hereinafter called 401545(100) consisting of 99,9% Q0 and 0,1% Q1-phase. The other phosphate ceramics i) 401545(40) consists of 75% Q0-phase, 22% Q1-phase and 4% Q2-phase ii) 401545(15) consists of 65% Q0-phase, 33% Q1-phase and 2% Q2-phase iii) 401545consists of 56% Q0-phase, 40% Q1-phase and 4% Q2-phase. The in-house produced ceramics where crushed and sieved to achieve particles of irregular shape in the range of 45-90µm. These powders show a quite good flowability and were used to generate cylindrical samples with a diameter of 5,5mm and a height of 11mm via 3-dimensional printing using a R1 printer from ProMetal company (USA). After drying the samples at T=125°C for 48 hours they were sintered at temperatures according to the thermal analysis results in the range of 900°C up to 1300°C. Afterwards the porosity, the linear shrinkage and the compressive strength were determined.
