T1 - Interlaboratory study on rheological properties of cement pastes and reference substances: comparability of measurements performed with different rheometers and measurement geometries N2 - This paper presents the results of an interlaboratory study of the rheological properties of cement paste and ultrasound gel as reference substance. The goal was to quantify the comparability and reproducibility of measurements of the Bingham parameters yield stress and plastic viscosity when measured on one specific paste composition and one particular ultrasound gel in different laboratories using different rheometers and measurement geometries. The procedures for both in preparing the cement paste and carrying out the rheological measurements on cement paste and ultrasound gel were carefully defined for all of the study’s participants. Different conversion schemes for comparing the results obtained with the different measurement setups are presented here and critically discussed. The procedure proposed in this paper ensured a reasonable comparability of the results with a coefficient of variation for the yield stress of 27% and for the plastic viscosity of 24%, despite the individual measurement series’ having been performed in different labs with different rheometers and measurement geometries. The standards ASTM E647 and ISO 12108 introduce operational definitions of DKth based on the crack propagation rate da/dN and suggest linear fits of logarithmic DK– da/dN test data to calculate DKth. Since these fits typically suffer from a poor representation of the actual curvature of the crack propagation curve, a method for evaluating DKth using a nonlinear function is proposed. It is shown that the proposed method reduces the artificial conservativeness induced by the evaluation method as well as the susceptibility to scatter in test data and the influence of test data density. In this work, the influence of the experimental procedure and air humidity on d𝑎∕d𝑁 − 𝛥𝐾 data at different 𝑅 is discussed. Unlike the results at 𝑅 = −1, the threshold values obtained at 𝑅 ≈ 0.8, i.e. under negligible crack closure levels, show a very small scatter band regardless of the variation of the test parameters and environmental conditions. T1 - Assuring quality in microplastic monitoring: About the value of clean-air devices as essentials for verified data N2 - Avoiding aerial microfibre contamination of environmental samples is essential for reliable analyses when it comes to the detection of ubiquitous microplastics. Almost all laboratories have contamination problems which are largely unavoidable without investments in clean-air devices. Therefore, our study supplies an approach to assess background microfibre contamination of samples in the laboratory under particle-free air conditions. We tested aerial contamination of samples indoor, in a mobile laboratory, within a laboratory fume hood and on a clean bench with particles filtration during the examining process of a fish. The used clean bench reduced aerial microfibre contamination in our laboratory by 96.5%. This highlights the value of suitable clean-air devices for valid microplastic pollution data. Our results indicate, that pollution levels by microfibres have been overestimated and actual pollution levels may be many times lower. T1 - Visualization of inflammation in experimental colitis by magnetic resonance imaging using very small superparamagnetic iron oxide particles N2 - Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) comprise mainly ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn´s disease (CD). Both forms present with a chronic inflammation of the (gastro) intestinal tract, which induces excessive changes in the composition of the associated extracellular matrix (ECM). In UC, the inflammation is limited to the colon, whereas it can occur throughout the entire gastrointestinal tract in CD. Tools for early diagnosis of IBD are still very limited and highly invasive and measures for standardized evaluation of structural changes are scarce. To investigate an efficient non-invasive way of diagnosing intestinal inflammation and early changes of the ECM, very small superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (VSOPs) in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were applied in two mouse models of experimental colitis: the dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis and the transfer model of colitis. For further validation of ECM changes and inflammation, tissue sections were analyzed by immunohistochemistry. For in depth ex-vivo investigation of VSOPs localization within the tissue, Europium-doped VSOPs served to visualize the contrast agent by imaging mass cytometry (IMC). VSOPs accumulation in the inflamed colon wall of DSS-induced colitis mice was visualized in T2* weighted MRI scans. Components of the ECM, especially the hyaluronic acid content, were found to influence VSOPs binding. Using IMC, colocalization of VSOPs with macrophages and endothelial cells in colon tissue was shown. In contrast to the DSS model, colonic inflammation could not be visualized with VSOP-enhanced MRI in transfer colitis. VSOPs present a potential contrast agent for contrast-enhanced MRI to detect intestinal inflammation in mice at an early stage and in a less invasive manner depending on hyaluronic acid content. A1 - Gorbushina, Anna T1 - A 30-year-old diesel tank: Fungal-dominated biofilms cause local corrosion of galvanised steel N2 - The increased use of biodiesel is expected to lead to more microbial corrosion, fouling and fuel degradation issues. In this context, we have analysed the metal, fuel and microbiology of a fouled diesel tank which had been in service for over 30 years. The fuel itself, a B7 biodiesel blend, was not degraded, and—although no free water phase was visible—contained a water content of ~60 ppm. The microbial community was dominated by the fungus Amorphotheca resinae, which formed thick, patchy biofilms on the tank bottom and walls. The tank sheets, composed of galvanised carbon steel, were locally corroded underneath the biofilms, up to a depth of a third of the sheet thickness. On the biofilm-free surfaces, Zn coatings could still be observed. Taken together, A. resinae was shown to thrive in these water-poor conditions, likely enhancing corrosion through the removal of the protective Zn coatings. T1 - Two-photon excitation temperature nanosensors based on a conjugated fluorescent polymer doped with an Europium probe N2 - A strongly fluorescent organic semiconducting polymer doped with a highly temperature dependent fluorescent europium(III) complex is converted into a nanosized material that is capable of optically sensing temperature (T) in the range from 0 to 50 °C via two-photon excitation at 720 nm. The nanosensors are prepared from a blue-fluorescent polyfluorene that acts as both a lightharvesting antenna (to capture two-photon energy) and an energy donor in a fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) system. The photonic energy absorbed by the polymer is transferred to the T-sensitive red-luminescent europium complex contained in the nanoparticles. The close spatial proximity of the donor and the acceptor warrants efficient FRET. A poly(ethylene glycol)- co-poly(propylene oxide) block copolymer is also added to render the particles biocompatible. It is shown that T can be calculated from a) the intensity of the luminescence of the europium complex, b) the ratio of the intensities of the red and blue luminescence, or c) the T-dependent luminescence lifetime of the Eu(III) complex. To address this issue, we suggest intersectoral collaboration to achieve zero plastic pollution. The outcomes of the project P-LEACH demonstrated the enormous complexity and range of potential toxic effects of plastic-associated chemicals and micro-/nanoplastics released into water from UV-weathered plastics. We initiated an intersectoral dialogue amongst scientists, manufacturers, regulators and representatives of civil society about how to alleviate the negative impacts of plastic pollution. Circular economy offers a framework for selecting non-toxic chemicals, extending product (re)use, and waste reduction, which act to alleviate pollution when applied to plastics. We suggest three measures to advance a circular economy of plastics: 1.) Increase simplicity of chemicals in virgin plastics combined with transparent information on the contents; 2.) Consider recyclability already in plastic material and product design; 3.) Foster communication through intersectoral dialogue. Major cornerstones are the provision of standardized, easy-to-use tools to characterize plastics and plastic leachates chemically and (eco)toxicologically, the enhancement of citizen awareness enabling them to make informed choices, the creation of economic incentives for manufacturers, and sector-specific regulations to provide products that safeguard environmental and human health. The main ceramic phase in all cases is Ca10[K/Na](PO4)7 hereinafter called 401545(100) consisting of 99,9% Q0 and 0,1% Q1-phase. After drying the samples at T=125°C for 48 hours they were sintered at temperatures according to the thermal analysis results in the range of 900°C up to 1300°C. T1 - Cholinergic and metabolic effects of metformin in mouse brain N2 - Metformin is widely used as a first-line treatment for type 2 diabetes, but central effects of metformin have received little attention. When metformin (200 mg/kg i.p.) was administered to C57Bl6 mice, metformin concentration in cerebrospinal fluid peaked at 29 μM after 30 min but dropped quickly and was low at 90 min. In mouse hypothalamus sampled by microdialysis, systemically administered metformin caused minor and transient increases of acetylcholine, glucose and lactate while choline levels decreased. When metformin (0.2−10 mM) was locally infused via retrodialysis, there was a short-lasting increase of acetylcholine in the hypothalamus. Extracellular lactate levels in hypothalamus showed a massive increase upon metformin infusion while glucose levels decreased. In isolated mitochondria of mouse brain, metformin inhibited oxygen consumption and the activity of complex I. Inhibition of mitochondrial respiration likely explains lactate formation in the brain during metformin infusion which may cause lactic acidosis during metformin intoxication. The changes of cholinergic activity in the hypothalamus may be associated with appetite suppression observed during metformin treatment. Since the beginning of the 1970s the occurrence of plastic particles in coastal waters has been explicitly described. Meanwhile, besides the marine environment, microplastics were also detected in other environmental media, biota and water management facilities. This work gives an overview of the occurrence and first known effects of microplastics in the environment. Furthermore, current scientific proceedings are considered and pending issues are discussed. In this regard it is of central importance to develop an environmentally comprehensive, harmonized scientific proceeding for miroplastics, which enables an evaluation of relevant material flows in adaption to necessary assessment concepts. The precursor is combined with the bridging units [SbV(X)6]- (X = CN-, NCS-) to yield star-shaped heptanuclear clusters [(LFeIII-X)6SbV]Cl5. The star-shaped compounds are in general high-spin systems at room temperature. On cooling to 20 K some of the iron(III) centers switch to the low-spin state as indicated by Mössbauer spectroscopy, i.e. multiple electronic transitions. While the cyano-bridged complex performs a multiple spin transition the thiocyanate-compound shows no significant population at both temperatures. This precursor is combined with the bridging unit [SnIV(CN)4] to yield star-shaped pentanuclear clusters, [(L-X-FeIII)4Sn(CN)4]Cl4 57Fe-Mössbauer, 119mSn-Mössbauer, and ESR spectroscopy are used to study our samples. For X = -CH3 the 57Fe-Mössbauer data show a multiple spin transition between iron(III) in the high-spin and low-spin state. Changing the functional group from X = -CH3 to X = -O-CH3 turns the switchability off.
