T1 - Change of gas permeation by photoinduced switching of zeolite-azobenzene membranes of type MFI and FAU N2 - FAU membranes of type Na–X and MFI membranes of type silicalite-1 which contain adsorbed azobenzene (AZB), have photoswitchable permeation properties due to the trans–cis photoisomerization of AZB. The change of gas permeation through these host–guest composite membranes depends on the irradiation wavelength, the quality of the membranes and the amount of adsorbed AZB. The permeances of the gases in the trans-form of the zeolite-encapsulated AZB were higher than those in the cis-form. The separation factors of equimolar mixtures of N2/CO2 and CH4/CO2 fed through the FAU–AZB membrane were higher at trans-switching than at cis-switching. The changes of the permeances of single gases and of the separation factors of equimolar gas mixtures by photoinduced trans–cis switching were found to be reversible over numerous switching cycles. The experimental results are in agreement with predictions made by Monte Carlo simulations for passing of permeant gases through these host–guest systems with the zeolite-hosted AZB in the trans- and in the cis-configuration. T1 - On the Applicability of Plasma Assisted Chemical Micropatterning to Different Polymeric Biomaterials N2 - A plasma process sequence has been developed to prepare chemical micropatterns on polymeric biomaterial surfaces. These patterns induce a guided localized cell layover at microscopic dimension. Two subsequent plasma steps are applied. In the first functionalization step a microwave ammonia plasma introduces amino groups to obtain areas for very good cell adhesion; the second passivation step combines pattern generation and creation of cell repelling areas. This downstream microwave hydrogen plasma process removes functional groups and changes the linkages of polymer chains at the outermost surfaces. Similar results have been obtained on different polymers including polystyrene (PS), polyhydroxyethylmethacrylate (PHEMA), polyetheretherketone (PEEK), polyethyleneterephthalate (PET) and polyethylenenaphthalate (PEN). Such a rather universal chemical structuring process could widen the availability of biomaterials with specific surface preparations. T1 - Pulsed and cw microwave plasma excitation for surface functionalization in nitrogen-containing gases N2 - Results are presented of polymer surface functionalization processes in pulsed and continuous wave (cw) microwave-excited plasmas in nitrogen-containing gases under admixture of hydrogen. A maximum selectivity of 100% for amino groups with respect to all nitrogen functional groups (NH2/N) was obtained in cw microwave (MW) plasmas either for very short treatment durations below 100 µs in pure NH3, or within approximately 10 s in hydrogen-rich nitrogen-containing plasmas. The amino and overall nitrogen surface densities, NH2/C and N/C, reach up to 3.5% and 35%, respectively. Post plasma processes of functionalized polymers are discussed in the light of monofunctionalization. Down to pulse duration of 1 ms, plasma decomposition rates of NH3, determined by infrared absorption spectroscopy, are found to scale linearly with the duty cycle. In this regime, the main effect of a duty cycle variation in pulsed NH3 plasmas on surface functionalization can be interpreted to result from changes in the concentration of the dominant stable species in the gas phase, NH3, N2 and H2, which are activated by subsequent plasma pulses. With increasing duty cycle, NH3 decomposition to N2 and 3H2 more and more dominates over the supply of fresh NH3. The nitrogen-removing role of hydrogen in the plasma is discussed in detail, whereas the role of the numerous transient nitrogen-containing species remains to be studied in the future. For biomaterial applications, the density and selectivity of the functionalization are of particular importance, because functional groups control the immobilization of biomolecules. Therefore, surface modification of biomaterials is a challenging task for low-pressure plasma technique. Plasma processes have been successfully applied to various polymer types in order to generate multifunctional surfaces. This paper discusses the present state and the prospects of non-coating plasma processes to generate mono functional surfaces of controlled amino group density. Such surfaces appear most desirable for many applications. The results of various microwave- and radio-frequency- excited plasma processes reported in the literature are reviewed and compared to a sequence of experiments that was conducted in a UHV reaction environment. Non-thermal plasmas are especially well suited for thermally damageable polymers. The effect of hydrogen admixture to discharges in nitrogen and ammonia is discussed in detail. The optimization of process parameters lead to highly selective amino functionalization of high density. The selectivity reached 100% -NH2/N at a surface density of amino groups of 3% -NH2/C. T1 - Möglichkeiten der Abschätzung der Langzeitbeständigkeit von Kunststoffdichtungsbahnen (KDB) auf Polyolefinbasis für den Tunnelbau N2 - Im Rahmen eines von der Bundesanstalt für Straßenwesen (BASt) initiierten Forschungsvorhabens (15.449/2007/ERB: „Prüfverfahren zur Beurteilung der Lebensdauer von Kunststoffdichtungsbahnen für Straßentunnel“) wurden anhand von Untersuchungen an Kunststoffdichtungsbahnen (KDB) auf Basis von Polyolefinwerkstoffen die Möglichkeiten der Beurteilung der oxidativen Langzeitbeständigkeit sondiert. Im Mittelpunkt stand die Erprobung des Autoklaventests in Anlehnung an DIN EN ISO 13438 (Methode C1/C2) an ausgewählten, für den Tunnelbau repräsentativen marktüblichen KDB-Produkten. Die Untersuchungen im Autoklaven bei erhöhten Temperaturen (60 °C, 70 °C und 80 °C) und Sauerstoffdrücken (11, 21 und 51 bar) wurden durch vergleichende Versuche im Wärmeschrank (Ofen) bei erhöhter Temperatur (85 °C) in Anlehnung an DIN EN 14575 ergänzt. Die KDBProdukte wurden außerdem einer eingehenden Materialcharakterisierung (Zugprüfung, DMA, DSC) unterzogen. Weiterhin wurden Bauwerksdaten recherchiert und auf ihre Nutzbarkeit zur Bewertung und Prüfbarkeit der Langzeitbeständigkeit von KDB in Tunneln betrachtet. Ziel war auch, die Anwendbarkeit des bisher vorgeschlagenen Extrapolationsmodells zur Auswertung der Ergebnisse von Autoklaventests an im Tunnelbau marktüblichen Produkten für Nutzungsdauern über 25 Jahre zu überprüfen und zur Entwicklung eines geeigneten Prüfverfahrens beizutragen. Der Beitrag geht auf Ergebnisse des Vorhabens ein und zeigt erste Schlussfolgerungen und weiteren Untersuchungsbedarf auf. Die Ergebnisse werden in den „Empfehlungen zu Dichtungssystemen im Tunnelbau EAG-EDT“ des Arbeitskreises 5.1 „Kunststoffe in der Geotechnik und im Wasserbau“ berücksichtigt, deren 2. ED - Neil Dixon, T1 - Long-term performance and lifetime prediction of geosynthetics N2 - To properly understand and assess the long-term behaviour of geosynthetic materials it is necessary to investigate the various types of possible degradation mechanims. This includes both chemical and mechanical behaviour, and sometimes even their interactions with one another. Clearly, chemical degradation of geosynthetics depends on the polymer type. For example, polyolefins are vulnerable to oxidation; polyesters are susceptible to hydrolysis; and plasticizers can leach from polyvinyl chloride. This paper describes the concept of these three types of degradation, but focuses on the oxidation of polyolefins since the majority of the geosynthetics is made from this type of polymer. The methods used to predict the lifetime of antioxidants and service life of the geosynthetic material will be illustrated. Furthermore, the influence of temperature, pressure, and ultraviolet light on the service life are also demonstrated. Finally, the current specifications targeting the longevity of different geosynthetics are presented. Regarding mechanical degradation, the paper mainly focuses upon the creep deformation of geogrids and stress crack resistance (SCR) of polyethylene geomembranes and geopipe. The method to assess stress crack resistance is described, and the microscopic mechanisms that lead to such failure are explained. For creep evaluation, different acceleration tests are presented and their applicability with respect to the different types of polymers is illustrated. In addition, the long-term shear behaviour of geocomposites and geosynthetic clay liners is presented. Compared to other heptazine-based materials, which are typically prepared at high temperatures and have recently received much interest as metal-free photocatalysts, the low-temperature protocol applied here allows the defined introduction of organic functional groups within the polymer backbone. The structure of HMP-3 contains alternating heptazine and benzothiadiazole moieties as electron acceptors connected by aminobenzene bridges as electron donors. The resulting material leads to enhanced hydrogen evolution compared to graphitic carbon nitride materials prepared at high temperatures (>500 8C) most probably because of the stabilization of photogenerated charge carriers in the D–A structure. Encapsulation in a cucurbit[7]uril host gave a 1:1 complex exhibiting a moderate emission increase due to destabilization of the TICT state inside the apolar cucurbituril cavity. A much stronger fluorescence enhancement is observed in 2:2 complexes with the larger cucurbit[8]uril, which is caused by additional conformational restriction of rotations around the aryl/aryl bonds. Because the cucurbituril complexes are pH switchable, this system represents an efficient supramolecular ON/OFF fluorescence switch. In the present work, two brick clays, a low-grade kaolinitic clay, and a mixed clay composed of 50% brick clay and 50% low-grade kaolinitic clay were studied regarding transformations on calcination, and strength and durability performance as well as pore structure of mortars made with the blended cements. All calcined clays exhibited pozzolanic reactivity, with the performance of the brick clays inferior to the low-grade kaolinitic clay. However, the mixed clay performed very similar to the low-grade kaolinitic clay, which points to a viable option for optimal use of brick clays in cementitious systems. The carbonation resistance of the blended cement mortars was generally worse than that of the plain Portland cement mortar, as expected, but the former exhibited a significantly improved chloride penetration resistance. The latter improvement was due to pore structure refinement in the blended cement mortars, compared to the Portland cement mortar.
