T1 - Programmable multilayers of nanometer-sized macrocycles on solid support and stimuli-controlled on-surface pseudorotaxane formation N2 - Mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs) such as rotaxanes and catenanes are capable of mechanical motion on the nanoscale and are therefore promising prototypes for molecular machines in recent nanotechnology. However, most of the existing examples are isotropically distributed in solution, which prohibits concerted movement and with it the generation of macroscopic effects. Thus, arranging them in ordered arrays is of huge interest in recent research. We report the deposition of quite densely packed multilayers of tetralactam macrocycles on gold surfaces by metal-coordinated layer-by-layer self-assembly. Linear dichroism effects in angle-resolved NEXAFS spectra indicate a preferential orientation of the macrocycles. The sequence of the metal ions can be programmed by the use of different transition metal ions at each deposition step. Additionally, reversible on-surface pseudorotaxane formation was successfully realized by repeated uptake and release of axle molecules inside the macrocycles cavities. Manufacturers of geotechnical analysis software added features for soil dynamic analyses to their products initially devised for static geotechnical analyses. Though, users often lack the experience for conducting such advanced numerical analyses. Working groups 1.4 "Soil dynamics" and 1.6 "Numerical analyses in geotechnical engineering" of DGGT German Society for Geotechnical Engineering established a joint subgroup "Numerical analyses in soil dynamics" to address this shortcoming. The present paper presents the work of the subgroup so far and provides some guidance on conducting numerical analyses in soil dynamics. Synthetic functional multilayers of molecules cooperating in a coupled manner can be fabricated on surfaces through layer-by-layer self-assembly. Ordered arrays of stimulus-responsive rotaxanes undergoing well-controlled axle shuttling are excellent candidates for coupled mechanical motion. Such stimulus-responsive surfaces may help integrate synthetic molecular machines in larger systems exhibiting even macroscopic effects or generating mechanical work from chemical energy through cooperative action. The present work demonstrates the successful deposition of ordered mono- and multilayers of chemically switchable rotaxanes on gold surfaces. Rotaxane mono- and multilayers are shown to reversibly switch in a coupled manner between two ordered states as revealed by linear dichroism effects in angle-resolved NEXAFS spectra. Such a concerted switching process is observed only when the surfaces are well packed, while less densely packed surfaces lacking lateral order do not exhibit such effects. T1 - The surface properties of nanoparticles determine the agglomeration state and the size of the particles under physiological conditions N2 - Due to the recent widespread application of nanomaterials to biological systems, a careful consideration of their physiological impact is required. This demands an understanding of the complex processes at the bio–nano interface. Therefore, a comprehensive and accurate characterization of the material under physiological conditions is crucial to correlate the observed biological impact with defined colloidal properties. As promising candidates for biomedical applications, two SiO2-based nanomaterial systems were chosen for extensive size characterization to investigate the agglomeration behavior under physiological conditions. To combine the benefits of different characterization techniques and to compensate for their respective drawbacks, transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering and asymmetric flow field-flow fractionation were applied. The investigated particle systems were (i) negatively charged silica particles and (ii) poly(organosiloxane) particles offering variable surface modification opportunities (positively charged, polymer coated). It is shown that the surface properties primarily determine the agglomeration state of the particles and therefore their effective size, especially under physiological conditions. Thus, the biological identity of a nanomaterial is clearly influenced by differentiating surface properties. A1 - Schmid, Thomas T1 - Calcium aluminates in clinker remnants as marker phases for various types of 19th-century cement studied by Raman microspectroscopy N2 - In the second half of the 19th century, Roman and Portland cements played an essential role as active hydraulic binder material in building construction and façade ornamentation. Size and heterogeneous phase assemblage of unhydrated cement clinker remnants in historical cement stone differ significantly from those of remnants occurring in modern Portland cement clinker burnt in rotary kilns due to limitations of the production technology available in the 19th century (e.g., comminution and homogeneity of the feedstock, burning temperature and regime in the intermittently operated shaft kilns, grinding machinery). In the common analytical approach, thin sections and fracture surfaces of historical Roman and Portland cement mortars are characterised regarding their mineralogical composition and microstructure using optical and electron microscopic imaging techniques. Raman microspectroscopy can be additionally employed for petrographic examination, overcoming some limitations of the methods used so far. The determination of the phase content of residual cement clinker grains in the hydrated matrix allows for the differentiation of Roman and Portland cement binders. As marker phases, we propose the calcium aluminates CA, C12A7, C2AS and C3A – besides the commonly used calcium silicates C2S and C3S – because of their different formation temperatures and stability fields. This study focuses on the identification of different calcium aluminate and aluminoferrite phases in clinker remnants in samples of cast ornaments of three buildings in Switzerland raised between 1875 and 1893; the obtained Raman spectra are compared with fingerprint spectra of the corresponding pure, synthesised clinker phases collected with the same instrument for an unambiguous data interpretation. In addition to these phases, mainly minerals showing no hydraulic activity, such as, wollastonite CS, rankinite C3S2, free lime, portlandite, iron oxides, garnets, augite, albite and feldspathoids have been identified in the sampled historical cement stones by Raman microspectroscopy. As there is a strong relationship between coexisting clinker phases and the chemical composition of the raw meal as well as the burning and cooling history during clinkering, the results can help in understanding the physical and mechanical characteristics of historical cement mortars. This knowledge is fundamental for the choice and the formulation of appropriate repair materials with tailored properties employed in the field of restoration and preservation of the architectural heritage of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The paper presents two cooperative projects focused on project management, testing performance and experimental results. In the first project, a full-scale prototype of a package for transport and storage of spent fuel elements with a total mass of 127,000 kg and its reduced-scale model which was similar to the prototype in both geometry and design were drop tested in 9 m and 1 m puncture tests at various drop orientations under regulatory conditions. In context with a corresponding research project the test data was used in combination with numerical methods to investigate the phenomenon of internal cask- content collisions during drop tests. Here, technological gaps between basket or radioactive content and cask body or primary lid can be a reason for significant high dynamic loadings of cask components and its internals due to additional impact interactions in the cask cavity caused by inner relative movement between content and cask. Further investigations were carried out in the field of similarity mechanics comparing experimental drop test data of the full-scale prototype and reduced-scale model in regard to the transferability of package impact response from reduced-scale models to full-scale packages. In the second project, drop tests with a waste container for intermediate depth disposal were per-formed being contracted by Kobe Steel, Ltd. and a consortium of Japanese electric power plant com-panies. The drop test program comprised three single 8-m drop tests in a specimen’s corner edge orientation. For drop tests according to legal regulations for interim storage or final disposal it is often necessary to use a target which represents the real ground of the storage facility. In such cases the container hits directly onto a well-defined concrete slab on top of the IAEA target. Here, the directly impact target for the drop tests were concrete slabs manufactured in Japan and connected by mortar to the impact pad of the unyielding IAEA target. A1 - Wiggenhauser, Herbert T1 - Correction of GPR wave velocity at different oblique angles between traverses and alignment of line objects in a common offset antenna setting N2 - Estimation of ground penetrating radar's wave velocity in materials is a critical step to accurately estimate depth of embedded line objects in concrete structures, and wetness of material. Errors of velocity are defined as the deviations between the velocities obtained in various oblique angles and those obtained in the traverse normal to the object orientation in a common offset antenna setting. In this paper, we quantified and corrected the errors of such estimation. GPR traverses were designed to travel in various oblique angles θ (90°, 75°, 60° and 45°) relative to the steel bars at 5 cover depths (55 mm, 85 mm, 115 mm, 145 mm and 175 mm). GPR wave velocity at any position within the lateral detection range of steel bars was measured with simple trigonometry in a semi-automated in-house program. It was found that reduction of oblique angles (i.e. θ<90°) causes flatter hyperbolic reflections and the associated errors of velocity can be as much as 30% in the case of an oblique angle 45° before correction. Such errors were corrected after re-scaling the horizontal travel distance with a multiplication factor of sin θ. The technical specifications, as provided by the manufacturer, have been collated and are displayed herein as a function of sensor working principle. These specifications comprise measuring range, response and recovery times, ambient temperature, pressure and relative humidity, power consumption and lifetime. These are then compared against known performance targets for both automotive and stationary applications in order to establish in how far current technology satisfies current requirements of sensor end users. Gaps in the performance of hydrogen sensing technologies are thus identified and areas recommended for future research and development. Die Ermittlung der Empfindlichkeit erfolgt an Kontrollkörpern mit natürlichen und künstlichen Inhomogenitäten durch Ermittlung der Anzeigenerkennbarkeit als Maß für die Eignung. Die europäischen Normen spezifizieren die Anforderungen an die Prüfmittel für Typen-, Chargen- und Betriebsprüfungen nach pr EN ISO 3452-2 für PT und EN ISO 9934-2 für MT. Dieser Beitrag beschreibt die Ermittlung der Empfindlichkeit von Prüfmitteln sowie deren Qualifizierung bei der Typenprüfung. Die vorgeschlagenen Verfahren wurden durch experimentelle Untersuchungen validiert, bei denen ein Bildverarbeitungssystem zur Ermittlung der Anzeigenerkennbarkeit verwendet wurde. Im Hinblick auf die Qualifizierung der Prüfmittel wird die Zuverlässigkeit der Verfahren diskutiert. T1 - Sol-gel alumina coatings on stainless steel for wear protection N2 - The aluminium oxide films on austenitic steel are prepared from sols of re-dispersed boehmite nano powders in water. After dip-coating of the sol, a heat treatment including drying, calcination and annealing in vacuum at temperatures up to 1100°C is performed to obtain crack-free coatings of a thickness up to 6 µm. XRD measurements detect α- and γ-alumina, a TiOx-phase at the metal/coating interface and a gradient of phase formation in the coating. The strong adhesion on the substrates is due to the layered assembly and gradient composition of the coating caused by an inter-diffusion of metal cations and oxygen in the metal/oxide interface during heat treatment. Residual stress measurements by X-rays result in compressive stresses of 2–4 GPa in the alumina coatings. The pin-on-disc test shows a remarkable improvement of wear resistance obtained by sol-gel coatings. The α-alumina content and the compressive stress of the coatings correlate with wear resistance of the coatings.
