T1 - Results of comparisons of the predictions of 17 dense gas dispersion models with observations from the Jack Rabbit II chlorine field experiment JF - Atmospheric Environment N2 - The Jack Rabbit II (JR II) chlorine field trials in 2015 and 2016 involved nine 5–20 ton releases of pressurized liquefied chlorine from a tank mounted 1 m above a broad flat desert sand surface. A model comparison study was initiated, where 17 widely-used dense-gas dispersion models were run by scientists in seven countries. Predictions were submitted following specified formats, using specified emissions and meteorology inputs. To compare with the model predictions, sets of observations were defined for the arc-maximum 1–3 s averaged concentrations (arc max C) and for cloud widths and heights (to 20 ppm and 200 ppm contours) at distances from 0.2 to 11.0 km from the release. The initial focus is on the three field trials (1, 6, and 7) that have the highest observed concentrations and that have detailed emissions information. It is found that these models are able to satisfactorily simulate (generally within a factor of two) the observed arc max C’s and their variation with downwind distance at this flat desert site. At each downwind distance, the scatter in the arc max C predictions covers about 1 ½ orders of magnitude, but the observed arc max C is within the range of the predictions. The median of the cloud width predictions is about 50% larger than the observed value for the three trials. The median of the cloud height predictions is within about 10% of the observed value. For both cloud width and/or height, there are a few models with large (factor of 3 or higher) overpredictions. Of the 17 models, when compared to observations, there is a core group of 5 or 6 with consistently (across all three trials and all distances) less mean error and scatter in their predictions of arc max C and cloud width and height. However, as a group, the 17 models are performing adequately (using the “factor of two” rule of thumb). An important caveat is that, at the JR II desert site, chlorine deposition is minimal. At a site with vegetation and/or organic-rich soil, the effects of removal of chlorine by deposition are expected to be significant. The International Symposium on Fungal Stress (ISFUS) brings together leading scientists from around the world who research fungal stress. T1 - Pandora’s Box–Influence of Contour Parameters on Roughness and Subsurface Residual Stresses in Laser Powder Bed Fusion of Ti-6Al-4V JF - Materials N2 - The contour scan strategies in laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) of Ti-6Al-4V were studied at the coupon level. These scan strategies determined the surface qualities and subsurface residual stresses. The correlations to these properties were identified for an optimization of the LPBF processing. The surface roughness and the residual stresses in build direction were linked: combining high laser power and high scan velocities with at least two contour lines substantially reduced the surface roughness, expressed by the arithmetic mean height, from values as high as 30 μm to 13 μm, while the residual stresses rose from ~340 to about 800 MPa. At this stress level, manufactured rocket fuel injector components evidenced macroscopic cracking. A scan strategy completing the contour region at 100 W and 1050 mm/s is recommended as a compromise between residual stresses (625 MPa) and surface quality (14.2 μm). The LPBF builds were monitored with an in-line twin-photodiode-based melt pool monitoring (MPM) system, which revealed a correlation between the intensity quotient I2/I1, the surface roughness, and the residual stresses. Thus, this MPM system can provide a predictive estimate of the surface quality of the samples and resulting residual stresses in the material generated during LPBF. T1 - Integrated X-ray techniques for durable dental interzones N2 - Nowadays, teeth are not directly extracted when tooth decay occurs. Whenever treatment of the affected tooth is possible, the carious region is replaced with a suitable filling. The filling material differs according to the position and size of the cavity. Since the restoration will remain in the tooth for many years, a well adhering and sealing interface between filling and healthy tooth tissue is needed. There is continuous development of new materials, but intensive studies of this complex interface between filling and healthy tooth are still lacking. Little is known about possible diffusion of elements from dental materials into healthy tooth tissue forming a socalled interzone with specific chemical and structural properties. The combination of different analytical X-ray methods at synchrotron radiation facilities and in the laboratory enables an extensive structural and elemental investigation of such interzones. While X-ray fluorescence techniques and X-ray absorption spectroscopy yield elemental distributions and localized chemical speciation, X-ray diffraction, refraction and computed tomography add structural information to the full 3D analysis of model and real life tooth samples. Within two DFG funded projects, we develop adapted methodologies and investigate micro-chemical changes in interzones which we hypothesize may lead to sclerotic dentine. T1 - Arsenic redox changes by microbially and chemically formed semiquinone radicals and hydroquinones in a humic substance model quinone JF - Environmental science & technology N2 - Arsenic is a redox-active metalloid whose toxicity and mobility strongly depends on its oxidation state, with arsenite (As(III)) being more toxic and mobile than arsenate (As(V)). Humic substances (HS) are also redox-active and can potentially react with arsenic and change its redox state. In this study we show that semiquinone radicals produced during microbial or chemical reduction of a HS model quinone (AQDS, 9,10-anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonic acid) are strong oxidants. They oxidize arsenite to arsenate, thus decreasing As toxicity and mobility. This reaction depends strongly on pH with more arsenite (up to 67.3%) being oxidized at pH 11 compared to pH 7 (12.6% oxidation) and pH 3 (0.5% oxidation). In addition to As(III) oxidation by semiquinone radicals, hydroquinones that were also produced during quinone reduction reduced As(V) to As(III) at neutral and acidic pH values (less than 12%) but not at alkaline pH. In order to understand redox reactions between arsenite/arsenate and reduced/oxidized HS, we quantified the radical content in reduced quinone solutions and constructed Eh-pH diagrams that explain the observed redox reactions. The results from this study can be used to better predict the fate of arsenic in the environment and potentially explain the occurrence of oxidized As(V) in anoxic environments. In the present study three soda–lime–borate glasses (NCBx with x = 5, 15 and 25 corresponding to xNa2O, 10CaO, 90 - xB2O3 in mol%) were prepared with water content up to 8 wt.%. The water speciation in the glasses was derived by near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy while boron speciation was investigated by 11B MAS NMR (Magic Angle Spinning Nuclear Magnetic Resonance). For the three glasses effective molar absorption coefficients were determined experimentally for the bands at 5200 cm- 1 and 4600 cm- 1, corresponding to combination modes of H2O molecules and OH-groups, respectively. In contrast to silicate glasses, in which at most ~ 2 wt.% H2O are dissociated to OH-groups, the amount of dissociated H2O may even exceed 5 wt.% in borate glasses. The fraction of tetrahedral to total boron (N4 = BIV / BIV + BIII) is predominantly controlled by the ratio of Na2O + CaO / B2O3, but only weakly affected by the water content of the glasses. When increasing the H2O content from 0 to 8 wt.%, N4 increases from 25% to 26% for NCB5 and from 42% to 47% for NCB25 glasses. T1 - Structural relaxation mechanisms in hydrous sodium borosilicate glasses JF - Journal of Non-Crystalline Solids N2 - Borosilicate glasses (16Na2O–10B2O3–74SiO2, NBS) with water contents up to 22 mol% H2O were prepared to study the effect of water on structural relaxation using DTA, viscometry and internal friction measurements. The results show that the glass transition temperature Tg of DTA and the isokom temperature T12, of viscometry are in excellent agreement, confirming the equivalence of enthalpy and viscous relaxation for NBS glass. Combining Tg data with water speciation data demonstrates that OH groups are mainly responsible for the decrease of Tg with increasing hydration, while molecular water plays only a minor role. Internal friction spectra at 7.125 Hz confirm the decisive influence of water on mechanical relaxation. The temperature range of α-relaxation (glass transition) strongly decreases while two β-relaxation peaks (sub-Tg) progressively appear with increasing water content. A high temperature β-relaxation peak, attributed to the presence of OH groups, shifts from 670 to 450 K as total water content increases from 0.01 to 5 wt%. A low temperature β-relaxation peak, attributed to molecular water, appears at 380 K and 330 K in glasses containing 3 and 5 wt% H2O, respectively. These findings suggest that relaxation mechanism of different hydrous species at low temperature may contribute to fatigue of stressed glasses. Soda-lime-borate glasses with nominal compositions of x Na2O, 10 CaO, (90-x) B2O3 (x = 5, 15 and 25 mol%) were doped with up to 8 wt.% H2O by processing glass powder + distilled water in platinum capsules in an internally heated gas pressure vessel at 1523 K and 500 MPa. The water content of hydrous glasses was determined by Karl-Fischer titration and near-infrared spectroscopy. The glass transition temperature T-g. was derived from DTA and micropenetration experiments for which the effect of water loss at the surface of the hydrous glasses was studied. Heating glass samples at 10 K min(-1) in the DTA resulted in T-g values which are close to T-12 isokom temperatures confirming the equivalence of enthalpy relaxation and viscous relaxation for borate glasses. For all three glass series it is shown that T-g strongly decreases whereas the liquid fragility strongly increases upon the addition of water. These findings reveal that H2O primarily causes breaking of B-O-B bonds rather than supporting 4-fold coordinated boron as it is well-known for alkali oxides in this concentration range. T1 - Structural investigation of hydrous sodium borosilicate glasses JF - Journal of Non-Crystalline Solids N2 - The structural properties of a borosilicate glass with nominal 16 mol% Na2O, 10 mol% B2O3 and 74mol% SiO2 and water contents between 0 and 8wt% H2O (0–22 mol% H2O)were investigated with IR, Raman and 11BMAS NMR spectroscopy. In addition to the pronounced OH stretching vibration band of weakly H-bonded species at 3580 cm−1 the MIR spectra show a triplet at 2900, 2350 and 1750 cm−1, similar as observed in water-bearing silicate glasses. These bands are assigned to OH groups and water molecules which are strongly H-bonded, to non-bridging oxygen. Water species contents determined from absorption bands in the NIR at 5200 cm−1 (molecular H2O), 4700 cm−1 (B\\OH), and 4500 cm−1 (Si\\OH) indicate that hydroxyl groups dominate up to ~6 wt% total H2O. Based on the absorption coefficients known from literature for silicate and borate glasses the B\\OH/Si\\OH ratio is estimated to be ≈0.8. As indicated by density, Raman and NMR data the incorporation ofwater has strong structural impacts in particular at low water contents up to 3 wt% H2O. While the nominally dry glasses still contain a significant fraction (12%) of three-fold coordinated boron, almost all boron is four-fold coordinated in hydrous glasses. The increase of band components in the Raman spectra near 900 cm−1 relative to the region N 1050 cm−1 gives evidence for depolymerization of the network upon hydration. Fitting of the spectra with Gaussians implies that silica tetrahedra with two non-bridging oxygen (Q2) are preferentially formed by reactionwithwater on expense of tetrahedra linked to four tetrahedra (Q4). Microplastic may harm desalination facilities by blocking filters and disturbing the marine food chain. Thermo analytical methods such as pyrolysis gas chromatography mass spectroscopy, and spectroscopic methods like (micro) Raman spectroscopy or (micro) Fouriertransform infrared spectroscopy in combination with appropriate filters and sample preparation are suitable for analyzing microplastics on a scale from 1 µm to 1000 µm fast and unambiguous. While the thermo analytical methods are suitable for larger sample volumes, Raman spectroscopy and Fouriertransform infrared spectroscopy are able to detect and analyze single microplastic particles for instance in bottled water. Machine learning algorithms ensure a reliable classification of different plastic materials. Laboratory setups using X-ray tube excitation render the method accessible for diverse research fields but interpretation of results and quantification remain challenging. The attenuation of X-rays in composites depends on the photon energy as well as on the composition and density of the material. For confocal micro-XRF, attenuation severely impacts elemental distribution information, as the signal from deeper layers is distorted by superficial layers. Absorption correction and quantification of fluorescence measurements in heterogeneous composite samples have so far not been reported. Here, an absorption correction approach for confocal micro-XRF combining density information from microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) data with laboratory X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and synchrotron transmission measurements is presented. The energy dependency of the probing volume is considered during the correction. The methodology is demonstrated on a model composite sample consisting of a bovine tooth with a clinically used restoration material.
