In its individual materiality, each manuscript is the result of various influences (e.g. production, storage, restoration, preservation). Given the recent technological developments (e.g. miniaturization of structural units, enlargement of memory capacity), technical diagnostics of art and cultural objects are becoming increasingly sought after in trans-disciplinary research. In this review we present a multi-instrumental approach to the investigation of manuscripts. Several case studies will illuminate our methodology. In its individual materiality, each manuscript is the result of a wide variety of influences. The ‘life’ of a manuscript starts with its production, followed by the use and storage of the manuscript, and is finally characterized by its treatment during restoration. Some of these characteristics are still in existence and may provide insights into the production process and history of a manuscript. N2 - For some time now, our group has been focusing on the history of the writing inks used in Europe and the Middle East. This work was partly inspired by the excellent book Les encres noires au Moyen Âge jusquà 1600 by Monique Zerdoun. The exhaustive research on the written sources that she presented allowed her to conclude that only experimental studies could produce a record of the inexorable expansion of iron-gall inks. Our study of the corrosive ink used in the Genesis Apocryphon scroll (1QapGen),1 which turned out to be carbon ink with a substantial amount of copper in accordance with Dioscurides’ ancient recipe (Oltrogge 2008), served as a second strong reason for wanting to build a bridge from the carbon inks of antiquity to the iron-gall inks that became the most popular writing medium both in Europe and far beyond from the twelfth century CE onwards. Even after achieving overwhelming popularity, the iron-gall inks preserved their individuality, remaining remarkably different from each other as neither a single standard recipe nor identical raw materials could be used. Moreover, the wealth of recipes that have been transmitted indicates that historical inks can be grouped geographically. At the same time, carbon inks did not fall into oblivion: in many a region of the Middle East, they have remained important to this day.
