The key parameters of such coatings in a fire Scenario are thermal insulation, foaming dynamics, and cohesion. The fire resistance tests, large furnaces applying the standard time temperature (STT) curve, demand coated full‐scale components or intermediate‐scale specimen. The STT Mufu+ (standard time temperature muffle furnace+) approach is presented. It is a recently developed bench‐scale testing method to analyze the performance of intumescent coatings. The STT Mufu+ provides vertical testing of specimens with reduced specimen size according to the STT curve. During the experiment, the foaming process is observed with a high‐temperature endoscope. Characteristics of this technique like reproducibility and resolution are presented and discussed. The STT Mufu+ test is highly efficient in comparison to common tests because of the reduced sample size. Its potential is extended to a superior research tool by combining it with advanced residue analysis (μ‐computed tomography and scanning electron microscopy) and mechanical testing. The benefits of this combination are demonstrated by a case study on 4 intumescent coatings. The evaluation of all collected data is used to create performance‐based rankings of the tested coatings. We developed two complementary small scale tests, simulating fully developed Tire. First is a strongly modified electrical muffle furnace, which is now able to follow the Standard temperature-time curve (according EN 1363-1) for 90 min in a very accurate manner. Düring the experiment backside temperatures are recorded and the growth of the char is observed with a custom made high temperature endoscope. Second is a testing apparatus based on a propane-oxygen-bumer for direct severe flame impingement of coated samples, reaching temperatures far above 1500 °C. Our small scale samples are coated Steel plates of a size of 75 x 75 x 2 mm3. The structure-propertyrelation between additives, thermal properties and morphology of the char were examined using a well determined series of samples consisting of basic composition mixed with different additives. With the burner-testing-apparatus we studied the behavior of a high performance coating, which shows a transformation of the carbonaceous char into a ceramic foam at temperatures as high as 1600 °C. Nondestructive micro-computed tomography was used to characterize the morphology of the char. According to the structure of the foams we used different analytic methods like cell-detection or wallthickness-analysis. Additional scanning electron and optical microscopy were performed. The combination of the CT-data with the measured backside temperatures of the different samples provides us a deep understanding of the interaction between isolating properties and morphology of intumescent chars. The influence of the laser pulse number and the peak fluence was investigated by means of several surface analytical techniques (optical microscopy, dynamic friction atomic force microscopy, scanning Auger electron microscopy and small-spot electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis). The correlation of the results about optical, physical and chemical properties of the irradiated areas allows us to propose a simple oxidation model, which explains different observed phenomena associated with surface damage such as mound formation and crater widening and clarifies the incubation behavior reported earlier for this material. C3A as the most reactive phase of Portland cement plays a significant role in early hydration reactions and affects the rheological performance. Therefore, this paper presents experimental results about the influence of delayed addition of PCEs on the Hydration of cement and C3A-gypsum pastes investigated by isothermal heat flow calorimetry. Complementary in-situ XRD was carried out on C3A pastes to analyze hydration and phase changes related to the addition of PCE. Cement pastes with a delayed addition of PCE showed less Retardation compared to simultaneous addition. The alteration caused by PCE is much more pronounced for C3A-gypsum mixes. With a delayed addition of SP, the hydration of C3A is less retarded or even accelerated. It is obvious that there is less retardation the later the addition of SP. Furthermore, the PCE alter the hydration of C3A when added delayed and exhibit changes in kinetics and hydration rates. XRD results showed that more C3A is dissolved in the presence of PCE. Also, the gypsum depletion occurs earlier in the presence of PCE and even faster with delayed addition. Without PCE AFm starts to form just after the gypsum depletion. However, in the presence of PCE AFm already starts to form at the beginning of the hydration. Due to the faster gypsum depletion in the presence of PCE, also the transformation from ettringite into AFm begins earlier, but takes longer as without SP. In this work, PNCs made from dried BNP (dBNP) with concentrations up to 15 wt% are investigated to differentiate particle and water related effects. The observed trend of the storage modulus in dynamic mechanical thermal analysis measurements was found to be independent of the drying procedure. Stiffness maps from intermodulation atomic force microscopy showed that dBNP leads to a stiffening of the interphase surrounding the particles compared with the unaffected epoxy matrix, while a softer interphase was reported for PNCs with as received BNP. A slight decrease in the glass transition temperature was observed by broadband dielectric spectroscopy related to a lowered crosslink density due to the particles. A significantly higher decrease was reported for PNCs with BNP, attributed to water influencing the curing process. In conclusion, the stiffening of PNC with BNP is related to the particles themselves, while the release of water causes the formation of a soft interphase in the vicinity of the particles and a significant decrease in crosslink density.
