This concept was confirmed with series of specially developed TMF-tests with defined temperature errors, performed on one test material (NIMONIC 90) in a temperature range of 400–850 °C. These tests should show the influence of temperature errors on test results with an emphasis on lifetime in comparison with reference tests. It is shown that with a limited number of specimens and only one test material, it is possible to propose a reasonable general temperature tolerance for TMF-tests, valid for a wide range of materials and test conditions. When optimising a mixture, it has to be decided for each individual case, which of the mortar properties needs to be treated with the highest priority. Most properties can be altered by several different measures, which may vary in effectiveness, side effects and cost efficiency. As the prevention of shrinkage induced constraining cracks is crucial for the durability and Service life of a concrete repair task, in the presented paper special attention is paid to the influences on the mortar’s shrinkage behaviour. On the basis of parameter studies it is shown, how it may be beneficial in certain cases to accept the worsening of some general properties if by this measure another property, which is essential for the individual application task, can be enhanced significantly. In general a tailor-made approach for the mixture proportioning seems beneficial but due to the complexity of the constituents’ interactions in repair mortars, it bears a high risk of unexpected malfunctions. T1 - Natural stone reprofiling in cultural heritage with modular repair mortars N2 - Whenever the preservation of original substance obtains priority in a restoration task, reprofiling techniques using repair mortars are a welcome solution. For ordinary concrete repair aesthetic aspects are of minor importance whereas for the restoration of natural stone elements they come to the fore. Especially for listed buildings and monuments, historico-cultural and aesthetical interests become the ruling Parameters for planning and execution of restoration tasks. Nevertheless the technical and constructive requirements have to be considered and deterioration processes have to be understood to ensure sustainability and durability of the repair task. Due o differences in the Chemical and mineralogical composition, natural stone provides a vast variety of texture and colour. Also the range of different mechanical and durability related properties is far wider than found with concrete for example. A research project dealing with the development of a modular repair mortar System for natural stone is currently set up at the BAM. To provide the conservator with the best possible options to match colour, texture and technical requirements, the System will be setup on a modular basis. Several different binder Systems on basis of cement, lime and sodium Silicate as well as polymer based Systems are planned, which can be combined with different aggregate compositions and different pigments. To evaluate the mortar performance, test procedures will be defined for tests on mortar samples and on composite specimens. In the paper the experimental Programme will be explained and first results will be presented and discussed. T1 - Segregation of coarse aggregates in self-compacting concrete N2 - A major requirement on self-compacting concrete (SCC) is the resistance to any kind of separation. In the presented studies the segregation behavior of aggregates was analyzed systematically. The rheology of selfcompacting mortars was dealt with at first. Following, the segregation of particles of different size, shape and density in various mortars was examined. The aim was to find an analytical relation to estimate the risk of sedimentation, using the characteristics of the particles and those of the mortars. The classification of the aggregates according to their potential segregation is rather simple. But the description of the segregation resistance of the mortar is much more difficult. It is not possible to evaluate a mortar solely based on the rheological properties. The mixture composition must always be considered as well. Tests on concrete samples were conducted additionally to determine the influence of the overall system of SCC on the sedimentation of the aggregates. In this research project, we are developing a design approach aiming to predict the ideal amount and properties of a grout for a specific soil situation and desired improvement of pile bearing capacity after Installation and during service time. Both numerical and experimental tests have been carried out to investigate the injection process during which a highly viscous grout is injected into the soil under high pressure to displace and compact the surrounding soil without fracturing it. The implicit Material Point Method (MPM) based on a mixed formulation is the numerical technique chosen to deal with the expected large deformations and the arbitrary shape of the developing grout bulb. The usage of MPM prevents both the need of remeshing and the numerical instability induced by extensive mesh distortion. For validation with experimental results, we have constructed a testing chamber with one transparent sidewall. These glazings, mostly dating back to the 20* Century, are often of art-historical importance. This article focuses on the analysis of occurring damages and their causes and on the development of special repair mortars and repair concepts for these glazings, which were done in a recent research project. On several reference buildings compressive strength, reinforcement location and diameter, carbonation depth as well as moisture and salt profiles were determined exemplarily. At the time of the concrete glass Windows’ construction generally no sufficient care was taken for an adequate concrete covering of the reinforcement. Carbonation-induced reinforcement corrosion is therefore the main cause of the occurring damage. Standards dealing specifically with the repair of Dalles de Verre do not exist. Therefore the polymer modified repair mortar was development according to the German guideline “Protection and Repair of Concrete Structures” (RL SIB, 2001). However due to the unique boundary conditions ofthe Dalles de Verre glazings, thespecifications of this guideline alone are not sufficient, they need to be altered and amended. In the article the individual requirements on repair mortars for different application tasks are described. Furthermore, the development of the mortars’ formulations and of a test specimen for performance tests under realistic conditions is shown. Consequently, they are independent counterparts to the well-known chemical procedures. NAMs obey fundamental laws or can be described and understood thoroughly. This qualifies them as candidates for reference methods. Although following similar nuclear reaction schemes, they comprise bulk analyzing capability (neutron and photon activation analysis) as well as detection power in surface near regions of solids (ion beam techniques). Prominent features of NAMs are sensitivity, selectivity, multielement determination and linearity of the calibration function covering a concentration range of several orders of magnitude. Moreover, ion beam techniques allow depth profiling with nm-resolution in several cases while the ion microprobe additionally offers a lateral resolution in the wm-scale. As NAMs require expensive apparatus (nuclear reactor, accelerator in radioactive control areas) their availability is restricted to a small number of suitably equipped institutes. However, they are able to solve complex analytical tasks, take part in key comparisons and play an essential role in the certification of reference materials. T1 - Potential planetary health impacts of the airborne plastisphere N2 - Microplastics are a ubiquitous yet long-overlooked component of airborne particulate matter. The surface of these plastic particles provides a unique niche for microorganisms, collectively known as the plastisphere. The plastisphere in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems harbors microbial communities with distinct compositions, structures, and functional profiles, posing potential planetary health risks. The characteristics, fate, and impacts of the microbiome associated with airborne microplastics, however, remain largely unknown. In this review, we fill the knowledge gaps by exploring how airborne microplastics serve as key habitats for microorganisms and the potential planetary health implications. We show that microplastics are expected to carry and sustain microorganisms over long distances and timescales in air, potentially dispersing pathogens, antibiotic-resistance genes, and other bioactive agents across ecosystems. These interactions may perturb ecological processes and biological health on a planetary scale. Interdisciplinary research and innovative methodologies are urgently required to better understand and mitigate the airborne plastisphere risks. T1 - Investigations on the performance of concrete repair mortars in composite specimen tests N2 - In the scope of a recent research project investigations on the performance of repair mortars for concrete structures were carried out at BAM. One of the key points of the project was the systematic investigation on the mode of action of single constituents and their interactions with Special emphasis on their influence on the mortars’ stiffness and shrinkage behaviour. The mortar’s shrinkage can be the reason of many following problems, which can be a direct result, i.e. the damage of the bond interface caused by constraining forces, or an indirect result, such as an increase in carbonation Depth or chloride penetration due to shrinkage induced constraining cracks, which will subsequently lead to durability problems. Especially when repairing weak Substrate concretes the proper adjustments of the mortar’s stiffness and shrinkage behaviour to the properties of the concrete is of essential importance for functionality and durability of the repair task. T1 - Development of repair mortars for the restoration of natural stone in cultural heritage N2 - Compared with concrete repair, the repair of natural stone is generally a similar task but at the same time very different. For listed buildings and monuments, historical, cultural and aesthetical interests become the ruling parameters. Especially from the demands of total reversibility of repair measures and strict prevention of the slightest original substance loss, which are not known in concrete repair, various restrictions are derived. From an aesthetical point of view, the same appearance as the original stone is desired for the mortar, whereas from a technical point of view, a monolithic behaviour of the repaired stone with homogeneous material properties would be favoured. This creates a need for a multitude of different property combinations and the whish for an independent adjustability of technical and aesthetical properties. A research project dealing with the development and optimisation of modular Stone repair mortars is currently carried out at BAM Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing. To provide the conservator with the best possible options to match colour, texture and technical requirements of the stone, the repairmortar System will be Setup on a modular basis. Different binder Systems are planned, which can be combined with different aggregate compositions and different pigments. The aim is to be able to modify the appearance of the mortar independent of ist mechanical properties. When working in the ränge of cultural heritäge, one specific demand is the Option of total reversibility of each repair task. In order to guarantee the reversibility and to ensure that the repair mortar does by no means induce any Damage to the original substance (e.g. by constraining forces), strength and stiffhess of the repairmortar have to be controlled and kept below the respective values of the original natural stone. On the other hand the mortar needs a certain abrasion resistance and durability. To accomplish all these requirements the use of polymer dispersions is very helpful, as they allow the production of low stiffhess mortars with at the same time relatively high flexural strength values. Also investigations on “alternative” modifications known from historical applications such as the use of casein are carried out.
