Understanding the fundamental mechanisms of the thermodynamics and kinetics of phase transitions is, thus, at the core of modern materials design. Conventionally, studies of phase transitions have, to a large extent, focused on pristine bulk phases. However, realistic materials exist in a complex form; their microstructures consist of different point and extended defects. The presence of defects impacts the thermodynamics and kinetics of phase transitions, but has been commonly ignored or treated separately. In recent years, with the significant advances in theoretical and experimental techniques, there has been an increasing research interest in modeling and characterizing how defects impact or even dictate phase transitions. The present review systematically discusses the recent progress in understanding the kinetics of defect-characterized phase transitions, derives the key mechanisms underlying these phase transitions, and envisions the remaining challenges and fruitful research directions. We hope that these discussions and insights will help to inspire future research and development in the field. T1 - On the decay time of upconversion luminescence N2 - In this study, we systematically investigate the decay characteristics of upconversion luminescence (UCL) under anti-Stokes excitation through numerical simulations based on rate-equation models. We find that a UCL decay profile generally involves contributions from the sensitizer’s excited-state lifetime, energy transfer and cross-relaxation processes. It should thus be regarded as the overall temporal response of the whole upconversion system to the excitation function rather than the intrinsic lifetime of the luminescence emitting state. Only under certain conditions, such as when the effective lifetime of the sensitizer’s excited state is significantly shorter than that of the UCL emitting state and of the absence of cross-relaxation processes involving the emitting energy level, the UCL decay time approaches the intrinsic lifetime of the emitting state. Subsequently, Stokes excitation is generally preferred in order to accurately quantify the intrinsic lifetime of the emitting state. However, possible cross-relaxation between doped ions at high doping levels can complicate the decay characteristics of the luminescence and even make the Stokesexcitation approach fail. A strong cross-relaxation process can also account for the power dependence of the decay characteristics of UCL. This algorithm is firstly validated by a scaled wind turbine model, and then it is applied to the dynamic strain responses recorded from a 5 MW wind turbine system. We observed variations in the fundamental frequency and 1f, 3f excitation frequencies due to the mass imbalance of the blades and aerodynamic excitation by the tower dam or tower wake. Inspection of the Campbell diagram revealed that the adverse resonance phenomenon and Sommerfeld effect causing excessive vibrations of the wind tower. T1 - Genomic data provide insights into the classification of extant termites N2 - The higher classification of termites requires substantial revision as the Neoisoptera, the most diverse termite lineage, comprise many paraphyletic and polyphyletic higher taxa. Here, we produce an updated termite classification using genomic-scale analyses. We reconstruct phylogenies under diverse substitution models with ultraconserved elements analyzed as concatenated matrices or within the multi-species coalescence framework. Our classification is further supported by analyses controlling for rogue loci and taxa, and topological tests. We show that the Neoisoptera are composed of seven family-level monophyletic lineages, including the Heterotermitidae Froggatt, Psammotermitidae Holmgren, and Termitogetonidae Holmgren, raised from subfamilial rank. The species-rich Termitidae are composed of 18 subfamily-level monophyletic lineages, including the new subfamilies Crepititermitinae, Cylindrotermitinae, Forficulitermitinae, Neocapritermitinae, Protohamitermitinae, and Promirotermitinae; and the revived Amitermitinae Kemner, Microcerotermitinae Holmgren, and Mirocapritermitinae Kemner. Building an updated taxonomic classification on the foundation of unambiguously supported monophyletic lineages makes it highly resilient to potential destabilization caused by the future availability of novel phylogenetic markers and methods. The taxonomic stability is further guaranteed by the modularity of the new termite classification, designed to accommodate as-yet undescribed species with uncertain affinities to the herein delimited monophyletic lineages in the form of new families or subfamilies. T1 - Gold Nanolenses Generated by Laser Ablation-Efficient Enhancing Structure for Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering Analytics and Sensing N2 - Nanoaggregates formed by metal spheres of different radii and interparticle distances represent finite, deterministic, self-similar systems that efficiently concentrate optical fields and act as “nanolenses”. Here we verify experimentally the theoretical concept of nanolenses and explore their potential as enhancing nanostructures in surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Self-similar structures formed by gold nanospheres of different sizes are generated by laser ablation from solid gold into water. These nanolenses exhibit SERS enhancement factors on the order of 109. The “chemically clean” preparation process provides several advantages over chemically prepared nanoaggregates and makes the stable and biocompatible gold nanolenses potent enhancing structures for various analytical and sensing applications. Electrogenerated conducting polyalkylthiophenes bearing activated ester groups N2 - Three new thiophene derivatives containing different activated ester groups covalently attached to the thiophene ring via a linear undecyl spacer have been synthesized. Electropolymerization of these monomers in acetonitrile led to stable electroactive polymers, while activated functional groups withstand the polymerization conditions and were correctly incorporated in the resulting polymers. These polymers show the characteristic electrochemical behavior of poly(3-alkylthiophene)s with the reversible redox transition in the range of 0.7–0.9 V. UV/Vis spectra of them exhibit an absorption maximum at around 460 nm. Conductivity measurements on oxidized films of these polymers by means of the two-probe method gave values in the range of 10-3–10-2 S cm-1. The reactivity of the pendant activated ester groups was demonstrated by the reaction with butylamine, (4-amino-2-oxabutyl) ferrocene and 2-aminoanthraquinone. Spectroscopic studies and electrochemical characterization confirmed that the immobilized amino compounds are covalently bound to the polymer surfaces. These results suggest that the obtained new polymers can be used as electrically conducting carrier materials for the immobilization of biochemically interesting molecules. T1 - Examining the efficacy of promising antioxidants to mitigate asphalt binder oxidation: Insights from a worldwide interlaboratory investigation N2 - Oxidative aging induces significant stiffening of asphalt binders that leads to a pronounced reduction in the overall durability of asphalt pavements. The strategic implementation of antioxidant additives provides a potential solution to alleviate this issue. This work presents results from the second phase of the global consortium for antioxidants research aimed at investigating the effectiveness of potential antioxidants in increasing the durability of asphalt binders. Sixteen laboratories around the world participated in this effort and a total of 28 binders from diverse geographical regions were tested. Two promising antioxidants, namely zinc diethyldithiocarbamate (ZDC) and kraft lignin were evaluated in this phase and blended with the binders at specific proportions. Subsequently, a comprehensive investigation was conducted to assess rheological characteristics and chemical properties of the various blends, utilising Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) measurements and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy. The findings indicate that additives such as ZDC hold considerable promise as an effective antioxidant, particularly when considering a wide diversity of binders. In general, its incorporation does not compromise the rutting performance of the binders and significantly improves fatigue performance. Therefore, research efforts should be focused on exploring additional facets to assess its practical applicability in field. T1 - Potential planetary health impacts of the airborne plastisphere N2 - Microplastics are a ubiquitous yet long-overlooked component of airborne particulate matter. The surface of these plastic particles provides a unique niche for microorganisms, collectively known as the plastisphere. The plastisphere in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems harbors microbial communities with distinct compositions, structures, and functional profiles, posing potential planetary health risks. The characteristics, fate, and impacts of the microbiome associated with airborne microplastics, however, remain largely unknown. In this review, we fill the knowledge gaps by exploring how airborne microplastics serve as key habitats for microorganisms and the potential planetary health implications. We show that microplastics are expected to carry and sustain microorganisms over long distances and timescales in air, potentially dispersing pathogens, antibiotic-resistance genes, and other bioactive agents across ecosystems. These interactions may perturb ecological processes and biological health on a planetary scale. Interdisciplinary research and innovative methodologies are urgently required to better understand and mitigate the airborne plastisphere risks. T1 - Synthesis of porous Si3N4/SiC ceramics with rapid nitridation of silicon N2 - Porous Si3N4/SiC ceramics were prepared with Si and SiC as raw materials, Y2O3 as sintering additive and ZrO2 as nitrided catalyst through a rapid nitration process. The nitriding rate as a function of temperature and duration was investigated. The porous Si3N4/SiC ceramics with 8 wt% monoclinic ZrO2 addition that was nitrided at 1400 °C for 2 h exhibited the highest nitridation degree of 95%. The experimental results also demonstrated that the reciprocal formation of ZrO2 and ZrN can effectively enhance the level of nitridation by suppressing the melting of silicon in micro-regions. The effects of nitriding time on the mechanical properties of the specimens with ZrO2 as a catalyst was also studied. After nitrided at 1400 °C for various durations from 2 to 8 h, the porous Si3N4/SiC ceramics with the properties of a porosity over 39.8%, a flexural strength over 88.9 MPa and a linear shrinkage lower than 0.6% were achieved. The systematic investigation reveals the catalytic mechanism of ZrO2 in the synthesis of Si3N4/SiC ceramics. Designing a Li composite electrode possessing a mechanically robust and lithiophilic three-dimensional (3D) framework represents a promising strategy to address these challenges. This study involves the preparation of three uniquely tailored Li-B-Mg composites using a combined metallurgical process of melting, casting, and rolling, along with the synergistic application of in situ X-ray computed tomography (CT) and post-mortem failure analysis to explore the most promising composite electrode candidate for LMBs. During the in-depth investigation, the optimal 70Li-B-Mg composite electrode stands out due to its robust skeleton fiber structure, uniform Li dissolution/deposition characteristics and high capacity of free-Li. Its promising prospects for enabling high-performance LMBs are showcased by the superior performance of the built Li||O2, Li||LiFePO4, Li||NCM622 and Li||NCM811 battery systems. T1 - Key comparison CCQM-K78.b - non-polar analytes in organic solvent: methoxychlor and trifluralin in acetonitrile N2 - The CCQM-K78.b key comparison was coordinated by the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM) on behalf of the CCQM Organic Analysis Working Group (OAWG) of the 'Comité Consultatif pour la Quantité de Matière' (CCQM), for National Measurement Institutes (NMIs) and Designated Institutes (DIs) providing measurement services in organic analysis under the 'Comité International des Poids et Mesures' (CIPM) Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA). This key comparison was conducted as a 'Track A' comparison within the OAWG's 10-year strategic plan. The goal of CCQM-K78.b was to underpin capabilities for the value assignment of calibration solutions containing low polarity/non-polar organic analytes in organic solvents. The selected model system consisted of a two-component pesticide solution in acetonitrile, comprising methoxychlor and trifluralin. Participants were tasked with assigning the mass fractions, in units of μg/g, of methoxychlor and trifluralin in acetonitrile solution. The mass fraction levels and analytical challenges of the selected analytes were representative of those encountered for calibration solutions of non-polar organic analytes. Participation in CCQM-K78.b allowed for the benchmarking of capabilities for assigning the mass fraction of non-polar organic compounds (pKow < -2) in solution, at mass fractions above 5 μg/g, in an organic solvent. Additionally, the comparison assessed the capabilities for the quantitative assignment of thermally labile compounds. Participants were provided by the BIPM with ampoules containing methoxychlor and trifluralin in acetonitrile. Each participant reported the mass fraction content of each analyte in μg/g. All participants ensured the metrological traceability of their results through the use of a Primary Reference Material (PRM), which was used to prepare a primary calibrator solution for each analyte using a gravimetric procedure. The twenty participating institutes primarily used analysis procedures based on GC-MS, -IDMS, -MS/MS, -ECD, and -FID, with some participants also using LC-UV for the value assignment. The analysis of methoxychlor and trifluralin in acetonitrile solution presented several challenges, including the thermal stability of the analytes under selected analytical techniques, control of solvent volatility, and considerable variation in some results using MS-based quantification methods. The mass fraction assignments for methoxychlor and trifluralin, consistent with the key comparison reference values (KCRVs), were achieved with associated relative standard uncertainties of (0.38 - 2.9) % for methoxychlor and (0.35 - 2.5) % for trifluralin. T1 - Mono- and Di(dimethylamino)styryl-Substituted Borondipyrromethene and Borondiindomethene Dyes with Intense Near-Infrared Fluorescence N2 - Four novel borondipyrromethene (BDP) and -diindomethene (BDI) dyes with one or two (dimethylamino)styryl extensions at the chromophore were synthesized and spectroscopically investigated. An X-ray crystal structure shows that the extended auxochrome is virtually planar. All dyes thus display intense red/near infrared (NIR) absorption and emission. The (dimethylamino)styryl group induces a charge-transfer character that entails bright solvatochromic fluorescence, which is only quenched with increasing solvent polarity according to the energy-gap law. The dye with an additional dimethylanilino group at the meso position of BDP shows a remarkable switching of lipophilicity by protonation. Two dyes with an 8-hydroxyquinoline ligand at the meso position display quenched emission in the presence of Hg2+ or Al3+ owing to electron transfer from the excited BDP to the complexed receptor. The BDI dye presents a pH indicator with bright fluorescence and extremely low fluorescence anisotropy.
