T1 - A new pnCCD-based color X-ray camera for fast spatial and energy-resolved measurements JF - Nuclear instruments and methods in physics research A N2 - We present a new high resolution X-ray imager based on a pnCCD detector and a polycapillary optics. The properties of the pnCCD like high quantum efficiency, high energy resolution and radiation hardness are maintained, while color corrected polycapillary lenses are used to direct the fluorescence photons from every spot on a sample to a corresponding pixel on the detector. The camera is sensitive to photons from 3 to 40 keV with still 30% quantum efficiency at 20 keV. The pnCCD is operated in split frame mode allowing a high frame rate of 400 Hz with an energy resolution of 152 eV for Mn Kα (5.9 keV) at 450 kcps. In single-photon counting mode (SPC), the time, energy and position of every fluorescence photon is recorded for every frame. A dedicated software enables the visualization of the elements distribution in real time without the need of post-processing the data. A description of the key components including detector, X-ray optics and camera is given. First experiments show the capability of the camera to perform fast full-field X-Ray Fluorescence (FF-XRF) for element analysis. The imaging performance with a magnifying optics (3×) has also been successfully tested. T1 - Compact pnCCD-based X-ray camera with high spatial and energy resolution: a color X-ray camera JF - Analytical chemistry N2 - For many applications there is a requirement for nondestructive analytical investigation of the elemental distribution in a sample. With the improvement of X-ray optics and spectroscopic X-ray imagers, full field X-ray fluorescence (FF-XRF) methods are feasible. A new device for high-resolution X-ray imaging, an energy and spatial resolving X-ray camera, is presented. The basic idea behind this so-called 'color X-ray camera' (CXC) is to combine an energy dispersive array detector for X-rays, in this case a pnCCD, with polycapillary optics. Imaging is achieved using multiframe recording of the energy and the point of impact of single photons. The camera was tested using a laboratory 30 µm microfocus X-ray tube and synchrotron radiation from BESSY II at the BAMline facility. These experiments demonstrate the suitability of the camera for X-ray fluorescence analytics. The camera simultaneously records 69696 spectra with an energy resolution of 152 eV for manganese Kα with a spatial resolution of 50 µm over an imaging area of 12.7 × 12.7 mm². It is sensitive to photons in the energy region between 3 and 40 keV, limited by a 50 µm beryllium window, and the sensitive thickness of 450 µm of the chip. Online preview of the sample is possible as the software updates the sums of the counts for certain energy channel ranges during the measurement and displays 2-D false-color maps as well as spectra of selected regions. The complete data cube of 264 × 264 spectra is saved for further qualitative and quantitative processing. T1 - Impact of the combined use of layered double hydroxides, lignin and phosphorous polyol on the fire behavior of flexible polyurethane foams JF - Industrial Crops & Products N2 - Flexible polyurethane foams with densities of 40 ± 2 kg m−3 were prepared by combining different ecofriendly fillers such as layered double hydroxides (LDH) and kraft lignin (a byproduct of the pulp and paper industry) with a phosphorous polyol (E560) in order to study their effect on the mechanical performance and fire behavior of the foams. Two series of foams were prepared, some containing lignin or LDH separately, and some with a combination of both: one of the series was prepared without E560 (0E foam series) and the other with 5 parts per hundred of E560 polyol (5E series). The use of fillers resulted in increased viscosity of the reactive mixture, requiring higher blowing agent content in order to hold the density of the foams constant. It was observed that urea phase segregation was favored in the series of 0E foams due to their lower viscosity than the 5E series. This had consequent effects on the resilience, compression force deflection and compression set of these foams. In terms of fire behavior it was observed that while the limiting oxygen index decreased, cone calorimeter results showed that the combination of lignin, LDH and E560 decreased the heat release of the foams. In addition, the combination of fillers and E560 contributed to increase the viscosity of the pyrolysis products, preventing the dripping of the molten polymer, which is a key factor in flame propagation towards adjacent objects in fire scenarios. Dies gilt auch für den Brückenbau, wo das Qualitätsmanagement seit langem Brücken von ihrem Entstehungsgang über den Betrieb bis in die Entsorgung begleitet. Die starke Vergrößerung der Frachtvolumina für Straße und Schiene und die zunehmende Überalterung des Brückenbestandes fragen danach, ob die bestehenden Brücken für die veränderten Betriebsbedingungen noch geeignet sind und wie sie und ob sie dafür instandgesetzt werden könnten. Für die erforderlichen Instandhaltungs- und Instandsetzungsmaßnahmen oder einen eventuellen Ersatz durch einen Neubau ist aber die Frage der Restnutzungsdauer von entscheidender Bedeutung. Es ist daher nicht von ungefähr, dass sich Baulast-träger auf nationaler und internationaler Ebene frühzeitig zusammengetan haben, um nach geeigneten Methoden der Bestimmung der Sicherheit und Restnutzungsdauer bestehender Brücken zu forschen. Auch die internationalen technisch-wissenschaftlichen Verbände wie EKS und fib sowie die Standard-Organisationen ISO und CEN sind der Frage eines internationalen Austauschs und der Vereinheitlichung der Methoden nachgegangen. Für Stahlbrücken hat insbesondere das technische Komitee6 - Ermüdung - der EKS Anregungen aufgegriffen, aus den verschiedenen nationalen Erfahrungen und dem vorhandenen Wissen technische Empfehlungen für die Beurteilung bestehender Stahlbrücken zu entwickeln [1], die sich als Grundlage für die von CEN/TC 250 - das CEN-Komitee für die Bearbeitung der Eurocode - geplante Erweiterung der Eurocode zur Instandhaltung und Instandsetzung des Brückenbestandes eignen. Das Ergebnis ist ein technisch-wissenschaftlicher Bericht, der im Rahmen der Zusammenarbeit der europäischen Kommission (DG-Research - Joint Research Centre JRC) mit der EKS als Basispapier für eine zukünftige Eurocode-Erweiterung veröffentlicht wurde und schon jetzt als Empfehlung für eine Vorgehensweise nach dem Stand der Technik verwendet werden kann. T1 - Investigation of a combined microdroplet generator and pneumatic nebulization system for rapid quantitative determination of metal-containing nanoparticles using ICP-MS JF - Analytical chemistry N2 - In this work, a routinely applicable approach is presented to characterize metal NPs. Individual droplets generated from a microdroplet generator (MDG) were merged into an aerosol generated by a pneumatic nebulizer (PN) and introduced into an ICPMS. The MDG offers high transport efficiency of individual and discrete droplets and was therefore used to establish a calibration function for mass quantification of NPs which were introduced through the PN following the single particle procedure as described elsewhere. The major advantages of such a combined configuration include fast processing of large sample volumes, fast exchanges of different sample matrixes, and the calibration of the NP signal using traceable elemental standards, thus avoiding the need to use NP reference materials or other, not always thoroughly characterized, commercially available NPs. The transport efficiency of the sample introduction is calculated based on the fact that 100% of the calibrant reaches the plasma through the MDG, whereas for the PN a NP suspension containing a known number concentration is used. Alternatively, bulk analysis of the NP material allows transport efficiency determination without any additional information from reference NPs. With this method, we could determine the size of standard silver NPs at 60.4 ± 1.0 nm and 80.0 ± 1.4 nm, respectively, which agrees with the size ranges given by the supplier (60.8 ± 6.6 nm and 79.8 ± 5.4 nm). Furthermore, we were also able to determine the NPs number concentration of the sample (Ag/Au) with a deviation of 3.2% the expected value. BAM has issued an update of the guideline: the BAM-GGR 011. The new revision describes necessary quality assurance measures for design, manufacture, testing, documentation, use, maintenance and inspection of packagings for package designs requiring competent authority approval for the transport of radioactive material. The measures can be categorised as system-related and design-related. They are independently approved and monitored by the German competent authority BAM and its authorised expert (BAM/T). The qualification of the organisation applying for the design approval certificate is reviewed in the context of the design approval procedure. The quality assurance measures for manufacture consist of three main steps. Pre-assessment of manufacturing documents such as quality plans, specifications etc., Manufacturing inspections according the pre-assessed documents and inspection before commissioning including documentation review. Periodic inspections during operation as well as relevant specifications for use and maintenance ensure that the properties specified in the approval certificate are preserved over the package life time. Special provisions for the return on experience regarding operational feedback for design, manufacture, use, maintenance and inspection are given. Special focus shall be given here to the rearranged and meanwhile established system of manufacturing inspections. This includes more transparent roles for a) the Producers authorised inspection 11282 representative, b) the independent inspection expert (S), acting on behalf of the manufacturer with acceptance of BAM, and c) BAM or its authorised expert (BAM/T). T1 - Upgrade project NEAT02016 at Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin – What can be done on the medium power neutron source JF - Physica B: Condensed Matter N2 - The neutron time-of-flight spectrometer NEAT has a long history of successful applications and is best suited to probe dynamic phenomena directly in the large time domain 10(-14) - 10(-10) s and on the length scale ranging from 0.05 to up to about 5 nm. To address user community needs for more powerful instrumental capabilities, a concept of the full upgrade of NEAT has been proposed. The upgrade started in 2010 after a rigorous internal and external selection process and resulted in 300-fold neutron count rate increase compared to NEAT01995. Combined with new instrumental and sample environmental capabilities the upgrade allows NEAT to maintain itself at the best world class level and provide an outstanding experimental tool for a broad range of scientific applications. The advanced features of the new instrument include an integrated guide-chopper system that delivers neutrons with flexible beam properties: either highly homogeneous beam with low divergence suitable for single crystals studies or "hot-spot" neutron distribution serving best small samples. Substantial increase of the detector angle coverage is achieved by using 416 He-3 position sensitive detectors. Placed at 3m from the sample, the detectors cover 20m(2) area and are equipped with modern electronics and DAQ using event recording techniques. The installation of hardware has been completed in June 2016 and on January 23, 2017 NEAT has welcomed its first regular users who took advantage of the high counting rate, broad available range of incoming neutron wavelengths and high flexibility of NEAT. Here we present details of NEAT upgrade, measured instrument characteristics and show first experimental results.
