T1 - Modelling and simulation of a fibre Bragg grating strain sensor based on a magnetostrictive actuator principle N2 - A new concept for the self-diagnosis of embedded fiber Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensors was developed, simulated and experimentally tested. This concept is based on a magnetostrictive metallic layer directly coated on the fibre cladding over the grating segment of the FBG sensor, so that an on-demand external magnetic field in a millitesla scale can produce a controllable artificial strain as an indication signal for the remote optical interrogator. The relationship between the pre-defined magnetic field and its induced Bragg wavelength shift characterizes this validation concept. Any deviation of the local bonding state of the interfaces from the initial or/and any change of shear strain transferring mechanism from composite matrix to the optical fibre core will result in alterations in this sensitive relationship, and thus triggers an immediate alert for a further inspection. The finite element method is used to simulate the strain of this configuration as result of different values of the magnetic field in order to optimize the geometrical sensor parameters. The simulations are verified by experiments results. © (2016) COPYRIGHT Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE). Downloading of the abstract is permitted for personal use only. Air-coupled ultrasonic testing emerged to suit these requirements as it does not require any liquid coupling medium. In conventional air-coupled ultrasonic transducers, matching layers are used in order to decrease the impedance mismatch between transducer and air. Matching layers can be omitted by using ferroelectrets, which are charged cellular polymers having ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties. Especially a low Young’s modulus, low density and low sound velocity of cellular polypropylene (cPP) are properties being required for well-matched air-coupled ultrasonic transducers. In our contribution we show recent enhancements of cPP transducers resulting in focused sound fields and thus improved lateral sensitivity. The influence of different transmitter apertures was evaluated using measurements of the emitted sound field. Further we show a transmission of a test specimen of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) containing artificial damages. For this purpose, different magnetostrictive coated fiber optic sensors were developed and various experiments were performed to verify their mode of operation and to determine the respective reproducibility. A1 - Köppe, Enrico T1 - An advanced method for pedestrian dead reckoning using BLSTM-RNNs N2 - Location estimation and navigation, especially on smartphones has shown great progress in the past decade due to its low cost and ability to work without additional infrastructure. However, a challenge is the positioning, both in terms of step detection, step length approximation as well as heading estimation, which must be accurate and robust, even when the use of the device is varied in terms of placement or orientation. In this paper, we propose a scheme for retrieving relevant information to detect steps and to estimate the correct step length from raw inertial measurement unit (IMU) data. This approach uses Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory Recurrent Neural Networks (BLSTM-RNNs). Designed to take contextual information into account, the network can process data gathered from different positions, resulting in a system, which is invariant with respect to transformation and distortions of the input patterns. An experimental evaluation on a dataset produced from 10 individuals demonstrates that this new approach achieves significant improvements over previous attempts and increase the current state-of-the-art results even in the presence of variations and degradations. We achieved a mean classification rate of 98.5% and a standard deviation of 0.70 for 10000 different test sequences and an average error of 1.45% regarding the step length. Thus is the best result on the task gathered in the experiments compared with competing techniques. A1 - Amos, J. M. T1 - Ultrasonic testing of adhesively bonded joints using air-coupled cellular polypropylene transducers N2 - In air-coupled ultrasonic testing, the impedance mismatch between the transducer and the air is commonly being solved by adding matching layers to composite transducers. To avoid the difficult technological procedure regarding matching layers, some new piezoelectric materials have been proposed. Most promising are ferroelectrets, which are charged cellular polymers, having ferroelectric and consequently piezoelectric properties. In particular, the extreme softness of cellular polypropylene (cPP) leads to a high piezoelectric constant and to a good impedance match with the air, making matching layers redundant. Its elasticity modulus below 1 MPa causes an additional effect not observed with common piezoelectric materials: that is the electrostrictive effect, here defined as the thickness change due to the attractive force between the transducer electrodes. This effect exceeds the piezoelectric effect at excitation voltages over 1 kV. The extreme softness of cPP leads also to high flexibility, enabling easy focusing by bending the transducer. We have developed air-coupled ultrasonic transducers based on cPP. This includes the electrical matching networks for the transmitter and for the receiver. The transmitter is excited with voltages up to 2.5 kV, so that the electrostrictive effect dominates, leading to sound pressure around 145dB at the transducer surface. These transducers have been applied for testing carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer plates, adhesive joints and other composite structures. Here we report about ultrasonic transmission of two types of adhesive joints. The first one is multi-layer aluminium components with some artificial disbonds, which are common in aerospace industry, and the second one is an aluminium-steel joint with polyurethane adhesive, which is used in automotive industry. In this paper we introduce an enhanced calibration process, which is based on the preceding study described in. The enhancement consists of the integration of a gyroscope. So far only the accelerometer and the magnetic field sensor were taken into account for the calibration process. Due to this improvement we reach a better approximation of the accelerometer and the magnetic field sensor. Additionally, we minimize the standard deviation of the single sensors and improve the accuracy of the positioning of a moving person. T2 - 16. The main objective is positioning in areas without GPS connection, i.e. indoors. A research project is carried out at BAM, Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing, to develop and to validate a multi-sensor system for 3D localization. It combines body motion sensing and a guard system for the tracking and recording of the status of persons. The so named BodyGuard system was designed for sensor-based monitoring and radio-based transmission of the movement of a person. Algorithms were developed to transform the sensor data into a spatial coordinate. This paper describes how the BodyGuard system operates, which main components were used in the system, how the individual sensor data are converted into 3D motion data, with which algorithms the individual sensors are processed, how individual errors are compensated and how the sensor data are merged into a 3D Model. Final objective of the BodyGuard system is to determine the exact location of a person in a building, e.g. during fire-fighting operations. Guided waves enable an effective differentiation of structural and defective indications as well as a classification of different defect types. T1 - Wireless sensor network with temperature compensated measuring technology for long-term structural health monitoring of buildings and infrastructures N2 - Damage to buildings occurs if a construction component fails. The result is a partial or total collapse which can be dangerous for people for example if it's a bridge or a large hall. The collapse of the terminal building at the Airport Charles de Gaulle in Paris and the damage at the historic City Archives of Cologne are typical examples of such accidents. Another problem is the contradiction of the increasing volume of traffic (particularly heavy traffic) and the great age of bridges. The probability increases that the load-bearing capacity of a bridge decreases. For example the collapses of the Mississippi Bridge and of the Inntal Motorway Bridge can be seen as results. Therefore it is necessary to control endangered structures during their life span. In order to prevent these kinds of accidents, the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing developed a radio-based, self-configuring measuring system in cooperation with the ScatterWeb Company, Berlin (Germany).
