T1 - New Processes for Ionizing Nonvolatile Compounds in Mass Spectrometry: The Road of Discovery to Current State-of-the-Art N2 - This Perspective covers discovery and mechanistic aspects aswell as initial applications of novel ionization processes for use in massspectrometry that guided us in a series of subsequent discoveries, instrumentdevelopments, and commercialization. Vacuum matrix-assisted ionization onan intermediate pressure matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization sourcewithout the use of a laser, high voltages, or any other added energy wassimply unbelievable, at first. Individually and as a whole, the variousdiscoveries and inventions started to paint, inter alia, an exciting new pictureand outlook in mass spectrometry from which key developments grew thatwere at the time unimaginable, and continue to surprise us in its simplisticpreeminence. We, and others, have demonstrated exceptional analyticalutility. Our current research is focused on how best to understand, improve, and use these novel ionization processes throughdedicated platforms and source developments. These ionization processes convert volatile and nonvolatile compounds from solid orliquid matrixes into gas-phase ions for analysis by mass spectrometry using, e.g., mass-selected fragmentation and ion mobilityspectrometry to provide accurate, and sometimes improved, mass and drift time resolution. The combination of research anddiscoveries demonstrated multiple advantages of the new ionization processes and established the basis of the successes that lead tothe Biemann Medal and this Perspective. How the new ionization processes relate to traditional ionization is also presented, as wellas how these technologies can be utilized in tandem through instrument modification and implementation to increase coverage ofcomplex materials through complementary strengths. T1 - QUAREP-LiMi: A community-driven initiative to establish guidelines for quality assessment and reproducibility for instruments and images in light microscopy N2 - A modern day light microscope has evolved from a tool devoted to making primarily empirical observations to what is now a sophisticated, quantitative device that is an integral part of both physical and life science research. Nowadays, microscopes are found in nearly every experimental laboratory. However, despite their prevalent use in capturing and quantifying scientific phenomena, neither a thorough understanding of the principles underlying quantitative imaging techniques nor appropriate knowledge of how to calibrate, operate and maintain microscopes can be taken for granted. This is clearly demonstrated by the well-documented and widespread difficulties that are routinely encountered in evaluating acquired data and reproducing scientific experiments. Indeed, studies have shown that more than 70% of researchers have tried and failed to repeat another scientist’s experiments, while more than half have even failed to reproduce their own experiments1. One factor behind the reproducibility crisis of experiments published in scientific journals is the frequent underreporting of imaging methods caused by a lack of awareness and/or a lack of knowledge of the applied technique2,3. Whereas quality control procedures for some methods used in biomedical research, such as genomics (e.g., DNA sequencing, RNA-seq) or cytometry, have been introduced (e.g. ENCODE4), this issue has not been tackled for optical microscopy instrumentation and images. Although many calibration standards and protocols have been published, there is a lack of awareness and agreement on common Standards and guidelines for quality assessment and reproducibility5. In April 2020, the QUality Assessment and REProducibility for instruments and images in Light Microscopy (QUAREP-LiMi) initiative6 was formed. This initiative comprises imaging scientists from academia and industry who share a common interest in achieving a better understanding of the performance and limitations of microscopes and improved quality control (QC) in light microscopy. The ultimate goal of the QUAREP-LiMi initiative is to establish a set of common QC standards, guidelines, metadata models7,8, and tools9,10, including detailed protocols, with the ultimate aim of improving reproducible advances in scientific research. This White Paper 1) summarizes the major obstacles identified in the field that motivated the launch of the QUAREP-LiMi initiative; 2) identifies the urgent need to address these obstacles in a grassroots manner, through a community of Stakeholders including, researchers, imaging scientists11, bioimage analysts, bioimage informatics developers, corporate partners, Funding agencies, standards organizations, scientific publishers, and observers of such; 3) outlines the current actions of the QUAREPLiMi initiative, and 4) proposes future steps that can be taken to improve the dissemination and acceptance of the proposed guidelines to manage QC. To summarize, the principal goal of the QUAREP-LiMi initiative is to improve the overall quality and reproducibility of light microscope image data by introducing broadly accepted standard practices and accurately captured image data metrics. In this study, we have designed and synthesized an innovative series of aza-boron dipyrromethenes emitting in the NIR-II region. We have investigated the effect of different water-solubilizing groups not only on the photophysical properties of the compounds but also on their in vitro and in vivo performance after bioconjugation to the antibody trastuzumab. Remarkably, we discovered that the most lipophilic compound unexpectedly displayed the most favorable in vivo properties after bioconjugation. This underlines the profound influence that the fluorophore functionalization approach can have on the efficiency of the resulting imaging agent. Wichtig ist hierbei zu gewährleisten, dass genügend Merkmalsträger in jeder Probe untersucht werden. Es muss daher eine für den Probenahmeort repräsentative Beprobung hinsichtlich des Wasservolumens in Abhängigkeit der Partikelanzahl gewährleistet sein. Das Hauptaugenmerk lag im vorliegenden Projekt auf einer praxisnahen Beprobungsstrategie. Es wurden verschiedene Konzepte ausprobiert. • Grundsätzlich hat sich gezeigt, dass eine Stichprobe eine Momentaufnahme des MP-Massengehaltes zeigt. Es wird eine hohe Statistik, also eine Vielzahl an Messungen am gleichen Probenahmeort, benötigt, um eine valide Aussage über den MP-Gehalt zu machen. • Es zeigt sich, dass eine integrale Probenahme über mehrere Wochen mit dem SK routinemäßig möglich ist. Die erfassten MP-Massen sind reproduzierbar und robust. • Die DFZ ist für Stichproben geeignet. Partikel < 50 µm werden eventuell unterschätzt • Die fraktionierte Filtration kann für Stich- und Mischproben direkt im Feld genutzt werden. Fraktionen von 10 und 5 µm werden später im Labor Vakuum filtriert. Es erfolgt eine Fraktionierung der Probe mit Siebmaschenweiten von 1000, 500, 100, 50, 10 und 5 µm. • Die fraktionierte Filtration kann auch anschließend an die Beprobung mit dem SK zur Anwendung kommen. Wird die mit dem SK gewonnene Wasserprobe fraktioniert filtriert, kann neben einem MP-Gesamtgehalt auch eine Einschätzung über die Partikelgrößen gewonnen werden. • Für Wässer mit geringen Partikelzahlen wurde ein Messfiltertiegel entwickelt. Dieser hat eine Maschenweite von 6 µm. Seine Anwendung kann mögliche Verluste beim Transferieren vom Probenahmetool zum Messgefäß und mögliche Kontaminationen reduzieren. Die Optimierung der Probenahmestrategie wurde durch Modellversuche und Simulationen unterstützt. Modellversuche zum Sinkverhalten und Simulationen von MP in realen Gewässern verdeutlichten das komplexe Verhalten der Partikel. Es konnte gezeigt werden, dass Partikel ab einer bestimmten Größe (und kleiner) bei genügend starker Turbulenz sich in der Wassersäule unabhängig von ihrer Dichte verhalten und so auch MP mit kleiner Dichte (z.B. PE) in der gesamten Wassersäule zu finden sind. Es konnte mit dem TEM die Existenz von NP gezeigt werden. Ein wesentlicher Aspekt des RUSEKU Projektes war die Beprobung realer Kompartimente. Beprobt wurde neben Oberflächengewässern, das urbane Abwassersystem der Stadt Kaiserslautern, Waschmaschinenabwasser und Flaschenwasser. • In Oberflächengewässern wurde hauptsächlich PE gefunden. Je nach Probe und Gewässer konnten auch PP, PS, PET, PA, SBR und Acrylate nachgewiesen werden. • Im urbanen Abwassersystem der Stadt Kaiserslautern konnte an allen Probenahmestandorten MP nachgewiesen werden. Es wurde hauptsächlich PE, neben geringeren Mengen an PP, PS und SBR gefunden. Nach einem Regenereignis war der SBR Anteil deutlich erhöht. • Die Beprobung eines realen Wäschepostens, bestehend aus T-Shirts und Hemden mit PA/CO oder PES/CO Mischgewebe, zeigte einen PA- und PES-Austrag im Waschwasser. Der überwiegende Teil der detektierten Fasern ist aber auf Baumwolle zurückzuführen. Reine gravimetrische Messungen zur Detektion von MP führen zu einer starken Überschätzung. • In Flaschenwasser (PET-Flaschen) konnte MP detektiert werden. PET wurde nur im stillen Mineralwasser, nicht in Mineralwasser mit Kohlensäure gefunden werden. Teilweise wurde auch das MP-Material des Verschlusses im Wasser detektiert. • Für Luftproben konnte ein Aufbau zur größenselektiven Beprobung getestet werden. Neben der Probenahme hat das Projekt auch gezeigt, dass die TED-GC/MS geeignet für die MP-Detektion im Routinebetrieb ist. Die TED-GC/MS konnte weiter optimiert werden. Es wurden MP-Massen bestimmt. Im Projekt wurden erste realitätsnahe Referenzmaterialien für die MP Detektion hergestellt. Die Herstellung von realitätsnahen Polymeren in ausreichender Homogenität und Menge hat sich als große Herausforderung herausgestellt. T1 - Versailles Project on Advanced Materials and Standards Interlaboratory Study on Measuring the Thickness and Chemistry of Nanoparticle Coatings Using XPS and LEIS N2 - We report the results of a Versailles Project on Advanced Materials and Standards (VAMAS) interlaboratory study on the measurement of the shell thickness and chemistry of nanoparticle coatings. Peptide-coated gold particles were supplied to laboratories in two forms: a colloidal suspension in pure water and particles dried onto a silicon wafer. Participants prepared and analyzed these samples using either X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) or low energy ion scattering (LEIS). Careful data analysis revealed some significant sources of discrepancy, particularly for XPS. Degradation during transportation, storage, or sample preparation resulted in a variability in thickness of 53%. The calculation method chosen by XPS participants contributed a variability of 67%. However, variability of 12% was achieved for the samples deposited using a single method and by choosing photoelectron peaks that were not adversely affected by instrumental transmission effects. The study identified a need for more consistency in instrumental transmission functions and relative sensitivity factors since this contributed a variability of 33%. The results from the LEIS participants were more consistent, with variability of less than 10% in thickness, and this is mostly due to a common method of data analysis. The calculation was performed using a model developed for uniform, flat films, and some participants employed a correction factor to account for the sample geometry, which appears warranted based upon a simulation of LEIS data from one of the participants and comparison to the XPS results. T1 - Identification of microplastic pathways within a typical European urban wastewater system N2 - In recent years, thermoextraction/desorption-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (TED-GC/MS) has been developed as a rapid detection method for the determination of microplastics (MP) mass contents in numerous environmentally relevant matrices and, in particular, for the measurement of polymers in water samples without time-consuming sample preparation. The TED-GC/MS method was applied to investigate a typical European municipal wastewater system for possible MP masses. Such investigations are important in view of the recent revision of the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive. Four different representative sampling sites were selected: greywater (domestic wastewater without toilet), combined sewer, and influent and effluent of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). All samples were collected by fractional filtration. Filtration was carried out over mesh sizes of 500, 100, 50, and in some cases, 5 µm. Polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS) were detected in all samples, with the PE fraction dominating in all cases. Styrene-butadiene rubber which serves as an indication of tire abrasion, was only found in the influent of the WWTP. The highest MP mass contents were found in the combined sewer, so MP can become a source of pollution during heavy rain events when the capacity limits of the effluent are reached, and the polluted effluent is released uncontrolled into the environment. Based on the studies, MP retention from the WWTP could be estimated to be approximately 96%. Few trends in polymer type or mass contents were detected within the different fractions of the samples or when comparing samples to each other. The use of visible and NIR-I fluorophores has led to beneficial results in clinical trials; however, involving NIR-II dyes seems to outperform those benefits due to the deeper tissue imaging and higher signal/noise ratio attained within the NIR-II optical window. In this context, we developed NIR-II emitting dyes targeting human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive ovarian tumors by coupling water-soluble NIR-II aza-BODIPY dyes to the FDA-approved anti-HER2 antibody, namely, trastuzumab. These bioconjugated NIR-II-emitting dyes displayed a prolonged stability in serum and a maintained affinity toward HER2 in vitro. We obtained selective targeting of HER2 positive tumors (SKOV-3) in vivo, with a favorable tumor accumulation. We demonstrated the fluorescence properties and the specific HER2 binding of the bioconjugated dyes in vivo and thus their potential for NIR-II FGS in the cancer setting. To enable precise tracking, we developed a versatile fluorescent platform based on an NIR-II emitting aza-BODIPY dye, which can be site-specifically grafted onto an IgG1 antibody to generate well-defined fluorescent ADCs. As a proof of concept, we synthesized an HER2-targeting trastuzumab immunoconjugate bearing a NIR-II aza-BODIPY fluorophore. The cytotoxic monomethyl auristatin E (MMAE) payload was introduced in the final step, resulting in a trackable and homogeneous ADC suitable for both in vitro and in vivo investigations. The resulting Trastu-azaNIRII-MMAE selectively accumulated in HER2-positive subcutaneous tumors, significantly reducing the tumor growth. Using NIR-II optical imaging, a single injection of the NIR-II-ADC allowed for the detection of the conjugate over a period of more than one month, highlighting its potential for long-term tracking and therapeutic applications. T1 - Chemiluminescence biosensor for the determination of cardiac troponin I (cTnI) N2 - Cardiac troponin I (cTnI) is a crucial biomarker for diagnosing cardiac vascular diseases, including acute myocardial infarction (AMI). This study presents a proof-of-concept chemiluminescence-based immunosensor for rapid and accurate measurement of cTnI, with the potential for online monitoring. The immunosensor incorporates a flow cell design and a sensitive complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) camera for optical readout. A microfluidic setup was established to enable selective and quasi-online determination of cTnI within ten minutes. The sensor was tested with recombinant cTnI in phosphate buffer, demonstrating measurements in the concentration range of 2–25 µg/L, with a limit of detection (LoD) of 0.6 µg/L (23 pmol/L) achieved using the optimized system. The immunosensor exhibited high selectivity, as no cross-reactivity was observed with other recombinant proteins such as cTnT and cTnC at a concentration of 16 µg/L. Measurements with diluted blood plasma and serum yielded an LoD of 60 µg/L (2.4 nmol/L) and 70 µg/L (2.9 nmol/L), respectively. This biosensor offers a promising approach for the rapid and sensitive detection of cTnI, contributing to the diagnosis and management of acute myocardial infarction and other cardiac vascular diseases. Representative sample volumes of 1 m3 were taken by applying a fractionated filtration method (500, 100, and 50 µm mesh sizes). The detection of MP mass fractions by thermal extraction desorption–gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (TED-GC/MS) was achieved without the previously required additional sample pretreatment for the first time. Different types of quantification methods for the evaluation of TED-GC/MS data were tested, and their accuracy and feasibility have been proven for real samples. Polyethylene, polystyrene, and polypropylene were identified in effluent samples. The polymer mass content varied significantly between 5 and 50 mg m−3. A correlation between the MP load and the quantity of suspended matter in the WWTP effluents, particle size distribution, particle type, and operation day (i.e., weekday, season, and capacity) was not found. It can be concluded that a meaningful assessment of WWTPs requires a comprehensive sampling campaign with varying operation conditions. Nevertheless, reliable quantitative information about surface functional group densities after layer formation is rarely available. Here, we present the analysis of thin organic nanolayers made from nitrogen containing silane molecules on naturally oxidized silicon wafers with reference-free total reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). An areic density of 2−4 silane molecules per nm2 was calculated from the layer’s nitrogen mass deposition per area unit obtained by reference-free TXRF. Complementary energy and angle-resolved XPS (ER/ARXPS) in the Si 2p core-level region was used to analyze the outermost surface region of the organic (silane layer)−inorganic (silicon wafer) interface. Different coexisting silicon species as silicon, native silicon oxide, and silane were identified and quantified. As a result of the presented proof-of-concept, absolute and traceable values for the areic density of silanes containing nitrogen as intrinsic marker are obtained by calibration of the XPS methods with reference-free TXRF. Furthermore, ER/AR-XPS is shown to facilitate the determination of areic densities in (mono)layers made from silanes having no heteroatomic marker other than silicon. After calibration with reference-free TXRF, these areic densities of silane molecules can be determined when using the XPS component intensity of the silane’s silicon atom. The parallel online measurement is realised by splitting the flow,which allows the adjustment of quantitative and independent flow rates, both in the HR-NMR probe as well as in the MR-NMR probe, in addition to a fast bypass line back to the reactor. One of the fundamental acceptance criteria for online MR-MNR spectroscopy is a robust data treatment and evaluation strategy with the potential for automation. The MR-NMR spectra are treated by an automated baseline and phase correction using the minimum entropy method. The evaluation strategies comprise (i) direct integration, (ii) automated line fitting, (iii) indirect hard modelling (IHM) and (iv) partial least squares regression (PLS-R). To assess the potential of these evaluation strategies for MR-NMR, prediction results are compared with the line fitting data derived from the quantitative HR-NMR spectroscopy. Although, superior results are obtained from both IHM and PLS-R for 1H MR-NMR, especially the latter demands for elaborate data pretreatment, whereas IHM models needed no previous alignment. Multilayer deposition causes heat accumulation during W AAM, which rises the preheat temperature of the previously created layer. This leads to process instabilities, which result in deviations from the desired dimensions and mechanical properties changes. During W AAM deposition of the wall structure, a systematic research is carried out by adjusting the interlayer delay from 10 to 30 s. When the delay period is increased from 10 to 30 s, the breadth decreases by 45% and the height increases by 33%. Grain refinement occurs when the interlayer delay duration is increased, resulting in better hardness, phase transformation temperature, compressive strength, and shape recovery behavior. This study shows how the interlayer delay affects the behavior of W AAM-built nickel-titanium alloy (NiTi) structures in a variety of applications. T1 - Microplastics in the Danube River Basin: A First Comprehensive Screening with a Harmonized Analytical Approach N2 - In this study, carried out within the Joint Danube Survey 4, a comprehensive microplastic screening in the water column within a large European river basin from its source to estuary, including major tributaries, was realized. The objective was to develop principles of a systematic and practicable microplastic monitoring strategy using sedimentation boxes for collection of suspended particulate matter followed by its subsequent analysis using thermal extraction desorption-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. In total, 18 sampling sites in the Danube River Basin were investigated. The obtained suspended particulate matter samples were subdivided into the fractions of >100 μm and <100 μm and subsequently analyzed for microplastic mass contents. The results showed that microplastics were detected in all samples, with polyethylene being the predominant polymer with maximum contents of 22.24 μg/mg, 3.23 μg/mg for polystyrene, 1.03 μg/mg for styrene-butadiene-rubber, and 0.45 μg/mg for polypropylene. Further, polymers such as different sorts of polyester, polyacrylates, polylactide, and natural rubber were not detected or below the detection limit. Additional investigations on possible interference of polyethylene signals by algae-derived fatty acids were assessed. In the context of targeted monitoring, repeated measurements provide more certainty in the interpretation of the results for the individual sites. Nevertheless, it can be stated that the chosen approach using an integrative sampling and determination of total plastic content proved to be successful. Bei erhöhtem Kohlenstoffgehalt bestimmt die diffusionsgesteuerte Bildung und Auflösung von Chromkarbiden die Verteilung von Chrom und Kohlenstoff im Gefüge. Bisher lag der Fokus von Forschungsarbeiten zum Einfluss der WB auf dem Anlassen im allgemein bekannten Sensibilisierungsbereich dieser Werkstoffgruppe zwischen 200 °C und 700 °C und der dort auftretenden Chromverarmung. Mit der gezielten WB des X46Cr13 (1.4034) wird gezeigt, dass Temperatur und Dauer beim Austenitisieren sowie die anschließende Abkühlung beim Härten das Korrosionsverhalten schon vor dem Anlassen signifikant beeinflussen. Auf der Basis von thermodynamischen Berechnungen wurden definierte WB ausgewählt, um gezielt unterschiedliche Volumengehalte von Chromkarbiden im Gefüge und somit auch unterschiedliche Chrom bzw. Kohlenstoffgehalte im Mischkristall zu erzeugen. Anschließend wurden die resultierenden Gefügezustände hinsichtlich Chromkarbidanteil und Härte verglichen und das Korrosionsverhalten mit der elektrochemisch potentiodynamischen Reaktivierung (EPR) sowie durch einen Schnelltest mit der KorroPad-Prüfung untersucht. Dabei konnte ein direkter Zusammenhang zwischen WB, Mikrostrukturänderungen und Korrosionsverhalten festgestellt werden. Mit steigender Austenitisierungstemperatur wird der Anteil an Chromkarbiden reduziert und der Kohlenstoff- und Chromgehalt der Matrix erhöht, bis eine vollständige Auflösung der Chromkarbide gegeben und die chemische Nennzusammensetzung der Legierung im Mischkristall erreicht ist. In der direkten Folge wird die Ausbildung der für nichtrostende Stähle charakteristischen Passivschicht erleichtert und das Lochkorrosionsverhalten verbessert. Die Abkühlrate hat neben den Austenitisierungsparametern ebenfalls einen großen Einfluss auf das Korrosionsverhalten. So führt eine langsame Abkühlung an Luft zu einer Chromverarmung im Gefüge, die eine deutlich erhöhte Lochkorrosionsanfälligkeit zur Folge hat. Both are achieved by the heat treatment (austenitization, quenching and tempering) of the normally used martensitic stainless steels. The established quality control method regarding the pitting corrosion resistance is an alternating immersion test in 1 % NaCl solution at 60 °C according to DIN EN ISO 8442. This standard test shows a high deviation, which limits any optimization of the heat treatment process. New approaches for corrosion testing of martensitic stainless-steels were developed and used in the last years to connect the weak pitting corrosion resistance of martensitic stainless-steels with the phenomenon of chromium depletion. The tempering temperatures used in the industrial heat treatment of cutlery are too low to explain the appearance of chromium depletion. For this reason, a systematic investigation of three heat treatment parameters (austenitization time, cooling speed and tempering temperature) were performed on the martensitic stainless-steels X50CrMoV15 (1.4116) to detect their contribution to chromium depletion. The electrochemical potentiodynamic reactivation (EPR), which is very sensitive to any change of the microstructure, was used to quantify the degree of chromium depletion. The KorroPad indicator-test was applied to correlate low pitting corrosion resistance to the presence of chromium depletion. The formation of chromium-rich nitrides during suboptimal heat treatment, processing or application leads to an inhomogeneous distribution of alloying elements in the microstructure, which reduces the corrosion resistance. Consequently, an accurate knowledge of the sensitization behavior is indispensable for the use of nickel-free, high-nitrogen austenitic stainless steels. The relationship between artificial aging, phase formation and corrosion resistance was investigated on the alloys X8CrMnN18-19 (1.3815) and X8CrMnMoN18-19-2 (1.4456), both alloyed with 0,8 wt.-% Nitrogen, in the present work. The microstructural evolution was studied by LM and SEM while the corrosion resistance was characterized with the electrochemical potentiodynamic reactivation (EPR) and the KorroPad indicator-test. Für Bauherren und Planer ausschlaggebend ist häufig ihr extrem niedriger CO2-Äquivalentkennwert. Entsprechend wurden Lehmplatten in einem Projekt mit Pilotcharakter für den Umbau des alten Abgeordnetenhauses in Bonn zum Gebäude des Klimareferats der Vereinten Nationen verwendet. Bei der Entscheidung für die Bauweise mit Lehmplatten standen vor allem raumklimatische und schallschutztechnische, das heißt gesundheitliche Aspekte, aber auch der Wunsch nach erhöhter Nachhaltigkeit im Vordergrund. Durch das Fehlen einer Norm entstehen im Vergleich zu geregelten Bauprodukten jedoch noch deutliche Wettbewerbsnachteile für Produzenten von Lehmplatten. Planer und Anwender sehen aufgrund fehlender Prüfzertifikate nicht selten von der Anwendung dieser Lehmbaustoffe ab. Wie schon für Lehmsteine und Lehmmörtel sollen deshalb jetzt auch für Lehmplatten an der Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) in dem Projekt StandardBoard Grundlagen für eine Produktnorm geschaffen werden. Darin ist als Projektpartner der Hersteller Conluto beteiligt. The choice of earth panels was determined not only by considerations of indoor climate and acoustic insulation issues. but particularly by an endeavour to attain a high level of sustainability. The lack of a standard causes producers of earth panels to experience considerable competitive disadvantages. With the absence of test certificates. designers as well as implementers refrain from using earth materials. The project StandardBoard has been initiated with the purpose of developing the basis for a product standard for earth panels. being realized at the BAM. where also standards for earth blocks and earth mortars have been developed. In dieser Arbeit wird der Einfluss von Stickstoff auf die Korrosionsbeständigkeit in Bezug zum Härtungsprozess von MNS dargestellt. Dazu wird vergleichend der Effekt von Austenitisierungsdauer, -temperatur und Abkühlgeschwindigkeit auf Gefüge, Härte und Korrosionsbeständigkeit der MNS X50CrMoV15 und X30CrMoN15 1 untersucht. Die Abkühlgeschwindigkeit wurde mit dem Stirnabschreckversuch gezielt variiert, um den Einfluss von Abkühlgeschwindigkeiten von > 100 K/s bis 1 K/s zu charakterisieren. Die Korrosionsbeständigkeit von Schweißverbindungen wird, neben dem Grundwerkstoff, dem Schweißzusatzwerkstoff und dem Schweißverfahren, auch sehr stark von der Schweißnaht-Nachbehandlung beeinflusst. Je nach zukünftigem Anwendungsbereich, geforderter Optik und Korrosionsbeständigkeit wird die Schweißnaht geschliffen, gebeizt, elektropoliert oder gestrahlt, um die beim Schweißen entstehenden An-lauffarben zu entfernen. Gestrahlte Oberflächen sind in der industriellen Praxis häufig anzutreffen, da sie deutlich schneller und kostengünstiger herzustellen sind als geschliffene, gebeizte oder polierte Oberflächen. Das Strahlen mit Korund ist außerdem effektiver als das Strahlen mit Glasperlen. In den letzten Jahren wurden korrosionsanfällige Oberflächen bei nichtrostenden Stählen beobachtet, wenn diese mit Korund geschliffen wurden. Daher wird nun auch beim Strahlen kritisch hinterfragt, ob die eingesetzten Strahlmittel die Korrosionsbeständigkeit beeinflussen. Diese Fragestellung wird beantwortet, indem geschliffene, gebeizte, polierte und mit verschiedenen Strahlmitteln gestrahlte Schweißverbindungen vom Duplexstahl 1.4062 im Vergleich zu gleichartig behandeltem Walzmaterial untersucht werden. Verschiedene wissenschaftliche Arbeiten haben bereits gezeigt, dass die Korrosionsbeständigkeit sehr stark vom Anteil an Chromkarbiden im Gefüge bestimmt wird. Der kombinierte Einfluss von Kohlenstoffgehalt und der Abkühlgeschwindigkeit beim Härten wurde mit Fokus auf die Korrosionsbeständigkeit bisher nur unzureichend untersucht. Die Literatur liefert außerdem gegensätzliche Aussagen über den Einfluss der Abkühlgeschwindigkeit, was möglicherweise auf unterschiedliche Kohlenstoffgehalte zurückgeführt werden kann. In dieser Arbeit wird daher systematisch untersucht, ab welcher Abkühlgeschwindigkeit es bei den Werkstoffen X20Cr13 und X46Cr13 zu Karbidbildung und Chromverarmung kommt. Die Variation der Abkühlgeschwindigkeit erfolgte für die industriell relevante Härtetemperatur von 1050 °C mit dem Stirnabschreckversuch. In Abhängigkeit von der Abkühlgeschwindigkeit wurden an den Stirnabschreckproben Gefüge, Härte und Korrosionsbeständigkeit (EPR, kritische Lochkorrosionspotentiale) untersucht und die Ergebnisse mit thermodynamischen Berechnungen (ThermoCalc) korreliert. T1 - Sensibilisierungsverhalten vom stickstofflegierten, austenitischen, nichtrostenden Stahl 1.4456 N2 - Austenitische nichtrostende Stähle kommen seit vielen Jahren in den verschiedensten industriellen Zweigen zum Einsatz (Pharma-, Medizin- und Lebensmittelindustrie, Bauwesen, Energie- und Antriebstechnik). Druckaufgestickte nichtrostende Austenite mit ca. 19 Gew.-% Mangan und 0,8 Gew.-% Stickstoff, sind als nickelfreie Variante seit einigen Jahren großtechnisch auf dem Markt verfügbar. In diesen Stählen wird die austenitische Matrix ohne die Legierungszugabe von Nickel sichergestellt, während gleichzeitig die korrosive Beständigkeit und die mechanischen Eigenschaften verbessert werden. Wie bei allen nichtrostenden Stählen beeinflussen die chemische Zusammensetzung und die Wärmebehandlung entscheidend das Gefüge und die Eigenschaften. Durch Lösungsglühen, Abschrecken und gezieltes Kaltverfestigen können bei diesen Stählen hervorragende mechanische Kennwerte erreicht werden (Rm von 900 MPa bis 2.000 MPa, A5 > 50 %, Av > 350 J). In der Regel dient das Lösungsglühen der Beseitigung unerwünschter Ausscheidungsphasen (Cr2N, M23C6 und Sigma-Phase) und der homogenen Verteilung der Legierungselemente im Austenit, was auch die Voraussetzung für eine hohe Korrosionsbeständigkeit darstellt. Wird die homogene Verteilung der Legierungselemente (Cr, Mo und N) durch suboptimale Wärmebehandlungs-, Verarbeitungs- oder Einsatzbedingungen beeinträchtigt, kann die korrosive Beständigkeit nicht auf Dauer gewährleistet werden. Daher ist die genaue Kenntnis vom Sensibilisierungsverhalten dieser hochstickstofflegierten Stähle unerlässlich. Am stickstofflegierten Werkstoff 1.4456 (X8CrMnMoN18-18-2) wird das Sensibilisierungsverhalten am lösungsgeglühten Zustand durch die gezielte Variation der Warmauslagerungsparameter untersucht. Dabei wird im Temperaturbereich von 500 °C bis 900 °C die Glühdauer systematisch variiert, um zu ermitteln, wann Ausscheidungen im Gefüge auftreten und ob diese die Korrosionsbeständigkeit beeinträchtigen. Die verschiedenen Sensibilisierungszustände werden mit dem EPR Verfahren, der KorroPad-Prüfung und dem REM vergleichend untersucht. Zur besseren Interpretation der experimentellen Ergebnisse werden auch thermodynamische Berechnungen genutzt, welche die Existenzbereiche der verschiedenen Ausscheidungsphasen vorhersagen. Diese werden nur durch eine optimal durchgeführte Wärmebehandlung des martensitischen nichtrostenden Stahls 1.4116 (X50CrMoV15) erreicht. In der industriellen Fertigung wird die Korrosionsbeständigkeit von Schneidwaren durch Wechseltauchversuche überprüft, die herstellerübergreifend eine große Schwankung der Korrosionsbeständigkeit belegen. In den letzten Jahren wurden neue elektrochemische Untersuchungsmethoden für die Werkstoffgruppe der martensitischen nichtrostenden Stähle entwickelt, welche die geringe Lochkorrosionsbeständigkeit von Schneidwaren auf das Phänomen der Chromverarmung zurückzuführen. Derzeit wird in der wissenschaftlichen und in der industriellen Gemeinschaft der Schritt des Anlassens als Hauptursache der Chromverarmung angesehen. Bei Schneidwaren sind die Anlasstemperaturen aber zu gering, um die auftretende Chromverarmung zu erklären. Aus diesem Grund wurden drei verschiedene Wärmebehandlungsparameter (Austenitisierungsdauer, Abkühlgeschwindigkeit und Anlasstemperatur) systematische untersucht, um deren Beitrag zur Chromverarmung darzustellen. Dazu wird die Untersuchungsmethode der elektrochemisch potentiodynamischen Reaktivierung (EPR) eingesetzt, die sehr sensibel auf Veränderungen im Gefüge reagiert und den Grad an Chromverarmung ermittelt. Außerdem wurde die KorroPad-Prüfung durchgeführt und kritische Lochkorrosionspotentiale ermittelt, um den Zusammenhang zwischen Chromverarmung und Lochkorrosionsbeständigkeit herzustellen. Spectra of all possible saturated and unsaturated species, as well as X-ray damage products, such as imine, nitrile, azo species, and cumulative double bonds, have been thoroughly examined. It is found that extra spectral structures observed in the experimental XPS spectra do not result from protonation but from the formation of a primary ammonium. Two types of FePc (Fe(II)Pc and Fe(III)Pc), which are highly photosensitive compounds, were immobilized on the surface of functionalized magnetite. The nanomaterials were characterized by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), X-ray difraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analyses (TGA). The generation of singlet Oxygen by nanomaterials was also investigated. In the presence of UVA light exposure (365nm) and 15mM H2O2, the M@Fe(III)Pc photocatalyst gave the best results; for a catalyst concentration of 2.0gL −1, around 60% BPA was removed after 120min of reaction. These experimental conditions were further tested under natural solar light exposure, for which also M@Fe(III)Pc exhibited enhanced oxidative catalytic activity, being able to remove 83% of BPA in solution. The water samples were less cytotoxic after treatment, this being confrmed by the MCF-7 cell viability assay. T1 - Different Impact of Gadopentetate and Gadobutrol on Inflammation-Promoted Retention and Toxicity of Gadolinium Within the Mouse Brain N2 - Objectives: Using a murine model of multiple sclerosis, we previously showed that repeated administration of gadopentetate dimeglumine led to retention of gadolinium (Gd) within cerebellar structures and that this process was enhanced with inflammation. This study aimed to compare the kinetics and retention profiles of Gd in inflamed and healthy brains after application of the macrocyclic Gd-based contrast agent (GBCA) gadobutrol or the linear GBCA gadopentetate. Moreover, potential Gd-induced neurotoxicity was investigated in living hippocampal slices ex vivo. Materials and Methods: Mice at peak of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE; n = 29) and healthy control mice (HC; n = 24) were exposed to a cumulative dose of 20 mmol/kg bodyweight of either gadopentetate dimeglumine or gadobutrol (8 injections of 2.5 mmol/kg over 10 days). Magnetic resonance imaging (7 T) was performed at baseline as well as at day 1, 10, and 40 post final injection (pfi) of GBCAs. Mice were sacrificed after magnetic resonance imaging and brain and blood Gd content was assessed by laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma (ICP)-mass spectrometry (MS) and ICP-MS, respectively. In addition, using chronic organotypic hippocampal slice cultures, Gd-induced neurotoxicity was addressed in living brain tissue ex vivo, both under control or inflammatory (tumor necrosis factor α [TNF-α] at 50 ng/μL) conditions. Results: Neuroinflammation promoted a significant decrease in T1 relaxation times after multiple injections of both GBCAs as shown by quantitative T1 mapping of EAE brains compared with HC. This corresponded to higher Gd retention within the EAE brains at 1, 10, and 40 days pfi as determined by laser ablation-ICP-MS. In inflamed cerebellum, in particular in the deep cerebellar nuclei (CN), elevated Gd retention was observed until day 40 after last gadopentetate application (CN: EAE vs HC, 55.06 ± 0.16 μM vs 30.44 ± 4.43 μM). In contrast, gadobutrol application led to a rather diffuse Gd content in the inflamed brains, which strongly diminished until day 40 (CN: EAE vs HC, 0.38 ± 0.08 μM vs 0.17 ± 0.03 μM). The analysis of cytotoxic effects of both GBCAs using living brain tissue revealed an elevated cell death rate after incubation with gadopentetate but not gadobutrol at 50 mM. The cytotoxic effect due to gadopentetate increased in the presence of the inflammatory mediator TNF-α (with vs without TNF-α, 3.15% ± 1.18% vs 2.17% ± 1.14%; P = 0.0345). Conclusions: In the EAE model, neuroinflammation promoted increased Gd retention in the brain for both GBCAs. Whereas in the inflamed brains, efficient clearance of macrocyclic gadobutrol during the investigated time period was observed, the Gd retention after application of linear gadopentetate persisted over the entire observational period. Gadopentetate but not gadubutrol appeared to be neurotoxic in an ex vivo paradigm of neuronal inflammation. The one-step codeposition process was carried out with binary silane mixtures, rendering possible the control over a wide range of densities in a single step. In particular, APDIPES constitutes the functional silane and CPDMMS the inert component. The procedure requires only small amounts of silanes, several ratios can be produced in a single batch, the deposition can be carried out within a few hours and a dry atmosphere can easily be employed, limiting self-condensation of the silanes. Characterization of the ratio of silanes actually bound to the surface can then be performed in a facile manner through contact angle measurements using the Cassie equation. The reliable estimation of the number of surface functional groups was approached with a dual-mode BODIPY-type fluorescence label, which allows quantification by fluorescence and XPS on one and the same sample. We found that fluorescence and XPS signals correlate over at least 1 order of magnitude, allowing for a direct linking of quantitative fluorescence analysis to XPS quantification. Employment of synchrotron-based methods (XPS; reference-free total reflection X-ray fluorescence, TXRF) made the traceable quantification of surface functional groups possible, providing an absolute reference for quantitative fluorescence measurements through a traceable measurement chain. The trityl skeleton is functionalized with trimethylsilyl halides to yield perhalofluoro trityl cations, which are subsequently reduced using commercial zinc powder. In this way, we prepare three perhalofluoro trityl radicals and analyze the impact of the fluorine ligands on their electro-optical properties, revealing some interesting trends. In comparison to literature-known polychlorinated trityl radicals, the new polyfluorinated derivatives exhibit substantially higher fluorescence quantum yields, longer luminescence lifetimes, and an expanded emission range that extends into the yellow spectral region. They further display enhanced photostability under light irradiation. In radical-stained polystyrene nanoparticles, an additional broad emission band in the red−NIR wavelength region is observed, which is attributed to excimer formation. Finally, the stability of the new radicals is investigated under ambient conditions, showing the slow conversion with atmospheric oxygen yielding the respective peroxides, which are characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. All in all, our study extends the present scope of luminescent trityl radicals, as the functionalization of the perfluorinated cationic precursor unlocks the path toward a vast variety of polyfluorinated trityl radicals. T1 - UV irradiation of natural organic matter (NOM): impact on organic carbon and bacteria N2 - UV-induced transformation of dissolved organic matter (DOC) is often accompanied by reduction of molecular weight and aromaticity and an increase of low-molecular weight (LMW) matter that can be utilized as a substrate by heterotrophic bacteria. Moreover, the generation of reactive transients and mineralization of DOC occurs. For a better understanding of the modification that starts after irradiation and to distinguish between possible chemical and biological modifications, we selected different natural organic matter (NOM) from Norway and Germany. The aqueous solutions were treated by UV irradiation and divided into two aliquot samples. NaN3 anti-bacterial treatment was applied to one sample, and high-pressure size-exclusion chromatography (HPSEC) analysis was used for both. In all samples, we found typical modifications of NOM after UV irradiation. Incubation (>7 days) of UV-irradiated NOM samples resulted in lower levels of LMW matter and increased aromaticity. Parallel to these changes of carbon fractions, an increase in bacterial cell numbers was observed. Addition of NaN3 to NOM, however, inhibited the reduction of LMW matter, indicating that microbial activity accounted for the observed changes in NOM. Analysis of the bacterial community composition by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) of the amplified 16S rRNA genes revealed that bacterial communities of non-irradiated and UV-irradiated NOM were different and that UV selected for specific members of α-proteobacteria, β-proteobacteria, and Bacteriodetes. Our results imply that after UV-irradiation of NOM, specific bacterial members are well adapted to low pH, high LMW DOC concentrations, and oxidative stress, and therefore thrive well on UV-irradiated humic matter. In the present study, two types of surface-modified magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles, coated with non-hazardous naturally occurring agents—either tannic acid (TA) or dissolved natural organic matter—were evaluated as magnetic heterogeneous catalysts. Chemical synthesis (co-precipitation) was chosen to yield the nanocatalysts due to its well-established simplicity and efficiency. Subsequently, the properties of the final products were fully assessed by various characterization techniques. The catalytic activity in heterogeneous oxidation of aqueous solutions containing a model pollutant, Bisphenol A (BPA), was comparatively studied. The effect of operational parameters (catalyst loading, H2O2 dosage, and UV light irradiation) on the Degradation performance of the oxidation process was investigated. The optimum experimental parameters were found to be 1.0 g/L of catalysts and 10 mM H2O2, under UV irradiation. The highest mineralization rates were observed for Fe3O4-TA catalyst. More than 80 % of BPA was removed after 30 min of reaction time under the specified experimental conditions. The obtained results showed that the two catalysts studied here are suitable candidates for the removal of pollutants in wastewaters by means of heterogeneous reaction using a green sustainable treatment method. T1 - Data management for image-based characterisation of 2D nano-materials N2 - The ACCORDs project, funded through Horizon Europe, is pioneering a novel approach to investigate Graphene Family Materials (GFMs) through image analysis. Our aim is to unveil how these materials might influence health and the environment. To achieve this, we are developing a platform designed for the easy retrieval, access, sharing, and utilisation of GFM data and the coordination between biological and physico-chemical data formats. Integral to this platform is an OMERO-based library for image storage, alongside data collection forms and image analysis tools. Efforts are underway to streamline the process for researchers to upload and disseminate their findings, manage information within a database and navigate the data with ease. Adhering to REMBI guidelines, which set the standard for annotating biological images with metadata, we ensure our data collection is comprehensive and adheres to established best practices. Initially, we are employing thresholding and basic machine learning techniques for image segmentation, laying the groundwork for advanced analysis through deep learning to gain more profound insights. Upon completion, the project will deliver a comprehensive platform facilitating efficient data and image management concerning GFMs. This platform will enable the straightforward discovery and use of protocols and results, all organised in accordance with the FAIR principles – Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. This initiative is poised to significantly impact materials science, enhancing our comprehension of the safety and environmental implications of 2D materials. T1 - High-Resolution Nondestructive Test Probes Based on Magnetoresistive N2 - This paper discloses two high-sensitivity probes for Eddy Current Nondestructive Test (NDT) of buried and surface defects. These probes incorporate eight and 32 magnetoresistive sensors, respectively, which are optimized for high sensitivity and spatial resolution. The signal processing and interfacing are carried out by a full-custom application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC). The ASIC signal chain performs with a thermal input-referred noise of 30 nV/√Hz at 1 kHz, with 66 mW of power consumption, in a die with 3.7 × 3.4 mm 2 . NDT results are presented, showing that there is an increase in spatial resolution of surface defects when contrasted to prior art, enabling the probes to resolve defects with diameters of 0.44 mm, pitches of 0.6 mm, and minimum edge distance as low as 0.16 mm. The results also show that the probe for buried defects is a good all-round tool for detection of defects under cladding and multiple-plate flat junctions. Here, we present alternatives for the quantitative determination of the analytes using modular, physically motivated models. These models can be adapted to new substances solely by the use of their corresponding pure component spectra, which can either be derived from experimental spectra as well as from quantum mechanical models or NMR predictors. Modular means that spec-tral models can simply be exchanged together with alternate reagents and products. Beyond that, we comprehensively calibrated an NIR spectrometer based on online NMR process data for the first time within an industrial plant. Simple and efficient procedures for the synthesis of the magnetic catalysts were employed, their properties being fully assessed by various characterization techniques. The catalytic activity in heterogeneous oxidation of aqueous solutions containing Bisphenol A (BPA) over the catalysts was comparatively studied. The optimum experimental parameters were: 1g/L of catalysts, 10 mM H2O2, under UV irradiation. The highest mineralization rates were observed for Fe3O4-TA catalyst. More than 80% of BPA were removed after 30 minutes of reaction time under the specified experimental conditions. Here, we validate a model system to identify genes involved in biofilm growth and biofilm-associated antibiotic resistance. Our model employs a genomics-driven workflow to assemble the complete MPAO1 genome, identify unique and conserved genes by comparative genomics with the PAO1 reference strain and genes missed within existing assemblies by proteogenomics. Among over 200 unique MPAO1 genes, we identified six general essential genes that were overlooked when mapping public Tn-seq data sets against PAO1, including an antitoxin. Genomic data were integrated with phenotypic data from an experimental workflow using a user-friendly, soft lithography-based microfluidic flow chamber for biofilm growth and a screen with the Tn-mutant library in microtiter plates. The screen identified hitherto unknown genes involved in biofilm growth and antibiotic resistance. Experiments conducted with the flow chamber across three laboratories delivered reproducible data on P. aeruginosa biofilms and validated the function of both known genes and genes identified in the Tn-mutant screens. Differential Protein abundance data from planktonic cells versus biofilm confirmed the upregulation of candidates known to affect biofilm formation, of structural and secreted proteins of type VI secretion systems, and provided proteogenomic evidence for some missed MPAO1 genes. This integrated, broadly applicable model promises to improve the mechanistic understanding of biofilm formation, antimicrobial tolerance, and resistance evolution in biofilms. Among these, DNA-binding proteins are of particular interest due to their pivotal roles in shielding DNA and facilitating its repair. Hence, in this study, we present first-ever recorded data of radiation damage to a protein monitored directly with near-ambient pressure (NAP) X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) under a water atmosphere. This surface sensitive technique was used to in situ damage and probe gene-V protein (G5P, a model DNA-binding protein) under wet NAP conditions and dry vacuum (UHV) conditions to determine the effect of water on the radiation response. In addition, the X-ray radiation damage to selected pure amino acids and short homopeptides was determined to better understand the variety of damage mechanisms within the complex protein. In dry samples, drastic chemical changes were detected in all biomolecules dominated by fragmentation processes. Here, the breakage of peptide bonds in the peptides and the protein are dominant. Surprisingly, hydration – despite introducing additional indirect damage pathways via water radiolysis – led to a reduction in overall radiation damage. This behaviour was attributed to hydration-dependent changes in reaction rates and respective deexcitation and damaging channels within the molecules and secondary species such as low-energy (LEE), (pre)-hydrated/(pre)-solvated electrons and radical species such as hydroxyl radicals. T1 - Influence of the post-weld surface treatment on the corrosion resistance of the duplex stainless steel 1.4062 N2 - The duplex stainless steel 1.4062 (X2CrNiN22-2) is used as alternative material to austenitic stainless steels in the construction industry. The corrosion resistance of welded seams is influenced by the base material, the weld filler material, the welding process and also by the final surface treatment. The scale layer next to the weld seam can be removed by grinding, pickling, electro-polished or blasting depending on the application and the requested corrosion resistance. Blasted surfaces are often used in industrial practice due to the easier and cheaper manufacturing process compared to pickled or electro-polished surfaces. Furthermore blasting with corundum-grain is more effective than blasting with glass-beads which also lower the process costs. In recent years, stainless steel surfaces showed an unusually high susceptibility to pitting corrosion after grinding with corundum. For this reason, it is now also questioned critically whether the corrosion resistance is influenced by the applied blasting agent. This question was specifically investigated by comparing grinded, pickled, corundum-grain- and glass-bead-blasted welding seams. T1 - Beyond microplastics ‑ investigation on health impacts of submicron and nanoplastic particles after oral uptake in vitro N2 - The continuously increasing use of plastics is supposed to result in a rising exposure of MNPs to humans. Available data on human health risks of microplastics after oral uptake increased immensely in the past years and indicates very likely only low risks after oral consumption. Concerning nanoplastics, uptake, transport and potential adverse effects after oral uptake are less well understood. This study aims to investigate differences between microplastic particles and particles in the submicron- and nanoscaled size derived from food-relevant polymers with a particle size range consistent with higher potential for cellular uptake, fate, and effects when applied to human intestinal and liver cells. This work includes the development of cellular and subcellular detection methods for synthetic polymeric particles in the micro- and nanometer-range, using Scanning Electron Microscopy, Small-Angle X-ray and Dynamic Light Scattering methods, Asymmetric Flow Field Flow Fractionation, octanol-water fractionation, fluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry. Polylactic acid (250 nm and 2 μm (polydisperse)), melamine formaldehyde (366 nm) and polymethylmethacrylate (25 nm) were thoroughly characterized. The submicro- and nanoplastic test particles showed an increased uptake and transport quantity through intestinal cells. Both types of particles resulted in observed differences of uptake behavior, most likely influenced by different lipophilicity, which varied between the polymeric test materials. Toxic effects were detected after 24 h only in overload situations for the particles in the submicrometer range. This study provides further evidence for gastrointestinal uptake of submicro- and nanoplastics and points towards differences regarding bioavailability between microplastics and smaller plastic particles that may result following the ingestion of contaminated food and beverages. Furthermore, the results reinforce the importance for studying nanoplastics of different materials of varying size, surface properties, polymer composition and hydrophobicity. The sensor is based on a micro-ring resonator and is fabricated on wafer-level using a CMOS technology. We revealed a ring resonator sensitivity for homogeneous sensing of 106 nm/RIU. Their evanescent field sensing requires partially unembedded waveguides compatible with CMOS processing. Our approach uses local backside etching with an additional buried oxide (BOX) etch to release waveguides while preserving the back-end of line (BEOL) structure, enabling spatial separation of the sensing area and electronics. The BOX etch critically affects sensor performance, as waveguide surface roughness can alter MRR properties and coupling. We analyzed MRR design variations, comparing wet and dry etching techniques for their effects on optical performance across rib and strip waveguides in quasi-TE and quasi-TM modes. Wafer-level measurements show that backside-released MRR achieve high extinction ratios with slightly reduced quality factors, advancing high-sensitivity photonic sensors. T1 - Persulfate activation by biochar and iron: Effect of chloride on formation of reactive species and transformation of N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET) N2 - Fenton-like processes using persulfate for oxidative water treatment and contaminant removal can be enhanced by the addition of redox-active biochar, which accelerates the reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II) and increases the yield of reactive species that react with organic contaminants. However, available data on the formation of non-radical or radical species in the biochar/Fe(III)/persulfate system are inconsistent, which limits the evaluation of treatment efficiency and applicability in different water matrices. Based on competition kinetics calculations, we employed different scavengers and probe compounds to systematically evaluate the effect of chloride in presence of organic matter on the formation of major reactive species in the biochar/Fe(III)/persulfate system for the transformation of the model compound N,N‑diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET) at pH 2.5. We show that the transformation of methyl phenyl sulfoxide (PMSO) to methyl phenyl sulfone (PMSO2) cannot serve as a reliable indicator for Fe(IV), as previously suggested, because sulfate radicals also induce PMSO2 formation. Although the formation of Fe(IV) cannot be completely excluded, sulfate radicals were identified as the major reactive species in the biochar/Fe(III)/persulfate system in pure water. In the presence of dissolved organic matter, low chloride concentrations (0.1 mM) shifted the major reactive species likely to hydroxyl radicals. Higher chloride concentrations (1 mM), as present in a mining-impacted acidic surface water, resulted in the formation of another reactive species, possibly Cl2•−, and efficient DEET degradation. To tailor the application of this oxidation process, the water matrix must be considered as a decisive factor for reactive species formation and contaminant removal. A1 - Schmidt, Wolfram T1 - Acoustic emission for characterising the crack propagation in strain-hardening cement-based composites (SHCC) N2 - This paper presents the analysis of crack propagation in strain-hardening cement-based composite (SHCC) under tensile and flexural load by using acoustic emission (AE). AE is a non-destructive technique to monitor the development of structural damage due to external forces. The main objective of this research was to characterise the cracking behaviour in SHCC in direct tensile and flexural tests by using AE. A better understanding of the development of microcracks in SHCC will lead to a better understanding of pseudo strain-hardening behaviour of SHCC and its general performance. ARAMIS optical deformation analysis was also used in direct tensile tests to observe crack propagation in SHCC materials. For the direct tensile tests, SHCC specimens were prepared with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibre with three different volume percentages (1%, 1.85% and 2.5%). For the flexural test beam specimens, only a fibre dosage of 1.85% was applied. It was found that the application of AE in SHCC can be a good option to analyse the crack growth in the specimens under increasing load, the location of the cracks and most importantly the identification of matrix cracking and fibre rupture or slippage. The monolayer was characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and angle-resolved near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) experiments and the decomposition of the azide upon irradiation with X-ray beams was investigated. Subsequently, various alkyne-functionalized host and guest molecules were attached to the azide by 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition. These modified surfaces and their host–guest chemistry were analysed by XPS and angle-resolved NEXAFS. The reversibility of guest binding was shown for one example as a proof of principle. This paper develops and proposes a suitable sampling concept for waterbodies that considers different plastic specific properties and influencing factors in the environment. Both artificial water including defined MP fractions and the discharge of a wastewater treatment plant were used to verify the derived sampling procedure, sample preparation and the subsequent analysis of MP using thermal extraction-desorption gas chromatography - mass spectrometry (TED-GC-MS). A major finding of this paper is that an application of various particle size classes greatly improves the practical handling of the sampling equipment. Size classes also enable the TED-GC-MS to provide any data on the MP size distribution, a substantial sampling property affecting both the necessary sampling volume and the optimal sampling depth. In the artificial water with defined MP fractions, the recovery rates ranged from 80 to 110%, depending on the different MP types and MP size classes. In the treated wastewater, we found both Polyethylene and polystyrene in different size classes and quantities.
