It intends to define a structured approach for collecting all required information on a creep experiment using the established terminology of the respective test standard ISO 204:2022 and additional terminology agreed upon by the domain experts. The individual entries are grouped according to their content type and sub-summarized under respective headlines, thereby suggesting a basic categorization and a related hierarchy of concepts. This hierarchy can be similarly applied to other test methods and different metallic (and other) materials. In version 1.1 some editorial and formal changes were made. A1 - Hickel, Tilmann A1 - Skrotzki, Birgit T1 - Management of reference data in materials science and engineering exemplified for creep data of a single-crystalline Ni-based superalloy N2 - The identification of process-structure-property relationships of materials inevitably requires the combination of research data from different measurements. Therefore, the concepts related to FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable) data handling, increasingly reported in literature, are particularly important in the materials science and engineering domain. However, they have not yet been integrated into a single, overarching methodological framework, particularly for reference data. Here, we introduce such a framework. Our concept covers data generation, documentation, handling, storage, sharing, data search and discovery, retrieval, and usage. Furthermore, we prototypically implement it using a real dataset with creep data of a single-crystal CMSX-6 Ni-based superalloy. The presented implementation is traceable and permanently accessible through open repositories. The individual elements considered in the framework ensure the functionality and usability of the data and, thus, the adherence to the FAIR principles. In conjunction with this, we present a definition for reference data of materials. Our definition underlines particularly the importance of a comprehensive documentation, e.g., on material provenance, data processing procedures, and the software and hardware used, including software-specific input parameters, as these details enable data users or independent parties to assess the quality of the datasets and to reuse and reproduce the results. Reference data that is managed according to the proposed framework can be used to advance knowledge in the materials science and engineering domain, e.g., by identifying new process-structure-property relations. Experimental results (mechanical tests, microscopy, X-ray computed tomography) concerning the creep deformation and damage mechanisms are presented and discussed. The tested LPBF material exhibits a low defect population, which allows for the isolation and improved understanding of the effect of other typical aspects of an LPBF microstructure on the creep behavior. As a benchmark to assess the material properties of the LPBF 316L, a conventionally manufactured variant of 316L was also tested. To characterize the creep properties, hot tensile tests and constant force creep tests at 600 °C and 650 °C are performed. The creep stress exponents of the LPBF material are smaller than that of the conventional variant. The primary and secondary creep stages and the times to rupture of the LPBF material are shorter than the hot rolled 316L. Overall the creep damage is more extensive in the LPBF material. The creep damage of the LPBF material is overall mainly intergranular. It is presumably caused and accelerated by both the appearance of precipitates at the grain boundaries and the unfavorable orientation of the grain boundaries. Neither the melt pool boundaries nor entrapped gas pores show a significant influence on the creep damage mechanism. However, for high-temperature materials, the values at operational temperatures are equally important for analyzing the mechanical behavior of components or for designing purposes. Elevated temperature tensile tests (often referred to as hot tensile tests) generally enable the measurement of the same material parameters as those obtained at room temperature. Typically, tensile and proof strength, elongation after fracture, and reduction of area are analyzed, with the focus often being on proof strength. The attached data schema for elevated temperature tensile tests was developed within the German NFDI-MatWerk initiative (https://nfdi-matwerk.de/). It builds on a previously published creep data schema and follows a reference data methodology that has also been previously outlined. The presented schema constitutes a structured approach for collecting all relevant information on an elevated temperature tensile test experiment. Overall, this development, as defined in the previously published data schema for creep data, aims to provide a comprehensive hierarchical data description that can be implemented in data management platforms (such as electronic laboratory notebooks), facilitate consistent quality assessment across different users and data providers, and promote the alignment of datasets to the FAIR principles by providing easy interoperability and full reusability. The presented schema was initially developed for datasets of Ni-based high-temperature alloys. However, thanks to its modular structure, it can also be applied to tensile tests of various metallic and other materials. Although the focus is on elevated temperature tensile testing, the data schema also offers a solid foundation for documenting room temperature tensile tests. In such cases, an adjustment of the requirement profile might be necessary, and categories or entries specific to mechanical testing at elevated temperatures, such as “temperature-measuring system”, “specified temperature”, or “soaking time”, become irrelevant. Overall, a detailed approach was followed to ensure the collection of all relevant information, including both metadata and test results. This includes, for example, comprehensive descriptions of the material’s manufacturing history and of the laboratory equipment, and basic strength and deformation characteristic values. The resulting data schema aims to support the description and identification of high-quality datasets, which may qualify as reference data of materials. Our current definition of reference data of materials has been published elsewhere. It should be noted, however, that not all research datasets —depending on their origin and purpose— require this full level of detail. Nevertheless, the presented data schema can support data providers in evaluating the completeness and value of their datasets. This version of the data schema covers elevated temperature tensile tests on both single- and polycrystalline specimen materials. The terminology is aligned with DIN EN ISO 6892-1 and DIN EN ISO 6892-2. It is designed to record the use of temperature measurement using thermocouples and the use of contacting extensometer systems. The requirement profile refers to the highest quality class of reference data, taken from calibrated instruments, and which shall enable the following usages: 1. Checking one's own elevated temperature tensile test results on nominally similar material 2. Verification of own testing set-up (e.g., by testing the same or a similar material) 3. Achieving the desired mechanical properties requires precise control over the nanometer-sized precipitates. However, the microstructure of these alloys changes over time due to aging, leading to a deterioration in strength. Typically, the size, number, and distribution of precipitates for a quantitative assessment of microstructural changes are determined by manual analysis, which is subjective and time-consuming. In our work, we introduce a progressive and automatable approach that enables a more efficient, objective, and reproducible analysis of precipitates. The method involves several sequential steps using an image repository containing dark-field transmission electron microscopy (DF-TEM) images depicting various aging states of an aluminum alloy. During the process, precipitation contours are generated and quantitatively evaluated, and the results are comprehensibly transferred into semantic data structures. The use and deployment of Jupyter Notebooks, along with the beneficial implementation of Semantic Web technologies, significantly enhances the reproducibility and comparability of the findings. Multi-phase-field simulations are conducted and discussed in comparison with aging experiments. The precipitate/matrix interface is considered to be anisotropic in terms of its energy and mobility. We find that the additional incorporation of an anisotropic interfacial mobility in conjunction with the elastic anisotropy result in substantially larger aspect ratios of the precipitates closer to the experimental observations. The anisotropy of the interfacial energy shows comparably small effect on the precipitate’s aspect ratio but changes the interface’s shape at the rim. The effect of the chemo-mechanical coupling, i.e., the composition dependence of the elastic constants, is studied as well. We show that the inverse ripening phenomenon, recently evidenced for δ’ precipitates in Al-Li alloys (Park et al. Sci. Rep. 2019, 9, 3981), does not establish for the θ′ precipitates. This is because of the anisotropic stress fields built around the θ′ precipitates, stemming from the precipitate’s shape and the interaction among different variants of the θ′ precipitate, that disturb the chemo-mechanical effects. These results show that the chemo-mechanical effects on the precipitation ripening strongly depend on the degree of sphericity and elastic isotropy of the precipitate and matrix phases. Heat treatments between 700 and 900 ◦C and 0.5 to 3 h, were applied to samples treated at 450 ◦C for 4 h. The results showed a stable microstructure at all studied temperatures and times in terms of grain size, morphology, aspect ratio, density of low-angle grain boundaries, and texture. However, temperature and time promoted the diffusion of segregated elements together with a reduction in dislocation density and disappearance of the cellular structure. This was associated with a reduction in hardness and tensile proof strength at both room and high temperature. In addition, microstructural characterization coupled with thermodynamic CALPHAD-based equilibrium calculations showed that the formation of carbides and intermetallic phases was already visible after annealing at 800 ◦C for 3 hours, although these intermetallics did not affect the tensile properties at this level. Analysis of the microstructure evolution after tensile deformation showed differences in the deformation mechanisms at room and high temperature, with twinning and martensitic transformation occurring at room temperature, the latter not widely reported for additively manufactured 316L. Finally, comparisons with similar materials produced under comparable conditions showed differences in the tensile properties, attributed to differences in chemical composition and the associated presence of stacking faults in the undeformed state. T1 - The influence of silicon on the strength and fracture toughness of molybdenum N2 - Mo–Si alloys containing up to 1 wt.% Si were fabricated by powder-metallurgical processing and their lattice parameters, elastic constants, densities, grain sizes, strengths, ductilities, and fracture toughness values were measured. The yield strength was insensitive to the grain size, i.e., a Hall–Petch relationship was not observed. Generally, Si additions caused pronounced solid solution strengthening. However, for small Si concentrations (≤0.1 wt.%) solid solution softening was observed at room temperature and below. With increasing Si concentration, the room temperature ductility and fracture toughness dropped precipitously. This is attributed to the increase in strength and a transition from transgranular to intergranular fracture.
