Ecotoxicity tests can indicate general hazardous impacts. We conducted growth inhibition (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata) and acute toxicity tests (Daphnia magna) with leachates obtained from batch tests of granular infill material and column tests of complete sporting ground assemblies. Ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber (EPDM) leachate showed the highest effect on Daphnia magna (EC50 < 0.4% leachate) and the leachate of scrap tires made of styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) had the highest effect on P. subcapitata (EC10 = 4.2% leachate; EC50 = 15.6% leachate). We found no correlations between ecotoxicity potential of leachates and zinc and PAH concentrations. Leachates obtained from column tests revealed lower ecotoxicological potential. Leachates of column tests of complete assemblies may be used for a reliable risk assessment of artificial sporting grounds. T1 - Mechanic and surface properties of central-venous port catheters after removal: A comparison of polyurethane and Silicon rubber materials N2 - Central venous port devices made of two different polymeric materials, thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)and silicone rubber (SiR), were compared due their material properties. Both naïve catheters as well as catheters after removal from patients were investigated. In lab experiments the influence of various chemo-therapeutic solutions on material properties was investigated, where as the samples after removal were compared according to the implanted time inpatient. The macroscopic, mechanical performance was assessed with dynamic, specially adapted tests for elasticity. The degradation status of the materials was determined with common tools of polymer characterisation, such as infrared spectroscopy, molecular weight measurements and various methods of thermal analysis. The surface morphology was an alysed using scanning electron microscopy. A correlation between material properties and clinical performance was proposed. The surface morphology and chemical composition of the polyurethane catheter materials can potentially result in increased susceptibility of the catheter to bloodstream infections and thrombotic complications. The higher mechanic failure, especially with increasing implantation time of the silicone catheters is related to the lower mechanical performance compared to the polyurethane material as well as loss of barium sulphate filler particles near the surface of the catheter. This results in preformed microscopic notches, which act as predetermined sites of fracture. T1 - Enhanced Fe and Ni bonded NbC Laser Surface Engineered based Hardmetals: Alternative Cutter Materials for Electric Vehicle Applications N2 - The efforts to substitute both tungsten carbide (WC) and cobalt (Co) has gained prominence in recent years due to the classification of Co as a carcinogen and the classification of Co and W as critical raw materials in the EU as well as within regulations of the U.S. National Toxicology Program. In this study, substitution of both WC and Co with advanced hardmetals consisting of NbC with Ni and Fe-based metal binders are investigated for their use of machining of metals used electric vehicle manufacturing. The developed NbC-Ni/Fe based hardmetals employ a Machining Property Led Tailored Design (MPLTD) approach. This reverse engineering strategy uses data from machining performance to guide the development of microstructural, mechanical, and behavioral properties. Four advanced NbC-based hardmetals were produced, two with Ni-based binders and two with Fe-based binders, along with two reference materials for comparison (WC-Co and straight NbC-12Ni). Hardmetals were characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (ADF-STEM), Vickers hardness, fracture toughness, and elastic moduli. Cutting tool inserts were manufactured from the developed hardmetals and enhanced using femto-second laser surface engineering. The inserts’ performance was evaluated through face milling tests on AZ31 automotive magnesium alloy, providing insights into their suitability for high-demand industrial applications. T2 - 21. T1 - Spatially resolved synchrotron-induced X-ray fluorescence analyses of metal point drawings and their mysterious inscriptions N2 - Synchrotron-induced X-ray fluorescence (Sy-XRF) analysis was used to study the chemical composition of precious Renaissance silverpoint drawings. Drawings by famous artists such as Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528) and Jan van Eyck (approximately 1395–1441) must be investigated non-destructively. Moreover, extremely sensitive synchrotron- or accelerator-based techniques are needed since only small quantities of silver are deposited on the paper. New criteria for attributing these works to a particular artist could be established based on the analysis of the chemical composition of the metal points used. We illustrate how analysis can give new art historical information by means of two case studies. Two particular drawings, one of Albrecht Dürer, showing a profile portrait of his closest friend, “Willibald Pirckheimer” (1503), and a second one attributed to Jan van Eyck, showing a “Portrait of an elderly man”, often named “Niccolò Albergati”, are the object of intense art historical controversy. Both drawings show inscriptions next to the figures. Analyses by Sy-XRF could reveal the same kind of silverpoint for the Pirckheimer portrait and its mysterious Greek inscription, contrary to the drawing by Van Eyck where at least three different metal points were applied. Two different types of silver marks were found in this portrait. Silver containing gold marks were detected in the inscriptions and over-subscriptions. This is the first evidence of the use of gold points for metal point drawings in the Middle Ages. T1 - Following the traces of Albrecht Dürer: analysis of silverpoint drawings by spatially resolved synchrotron-induced X-ray fluorescence analysis N2 - Spatially resolved X-ray fluorescence analysis using synchrotron radiation (SR-XRF) at the wavelength shifter beamline, BAMline, at BESSY was used to investigate Renaissance silverpoint drawings as it is extremely sensitive, non-destructive and can be carried out in air using an excitation spot in the hundred micrometer range. This paper deals with first results of the study of silverpoint drawings of Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528) belonging to the sketchbook that Albrecht Dürer used during a travel to the Netherlands in 1520/21. These results are compared to a PIXE study performed on drawings from the same sketchbook. The minor element composition of the silverpoint used for the drawings in the sketchbook was (10.6 ± 3.5) wt.% of Cu and traces of Zn. Mercury was found in the marks but does not belong to the initial composition of the silverpoint as it is attributed to an alteration phenomenon. One drawing of the sketchbook represents an exception. It consists of silver marks containing an additional minor element, Zn, in the marks and was, therefore, created with another silverpoint, probably at a different time than the other drawings. T1 - Structural and spectroscopic characterization of a series of potassium- and/or sodium-substituted beta-tricalcium phosphate N2 - In this paper, we report X-ray diffraction investigations as well as Raman and solid-state 31P and 23Na magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) characterization of three series of calcium orthophosphates. The general formulae of the studied compounds are Ca10.5-x/2Mx(PO4)7, where M = K or Na and x = 0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1.0; and Ca10KxNa1-x(PO4)7, where x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0. These calcium orthophosphates are found to be isostructural with β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP, Ca3(PO4)2) with the substitution of some calcium sites by potassium and/or sodium cations. The unit cell parameters vary continuously with the level of substitution, a characteristic of these solid solutions. The Raman spectra show the different vibrational bands of the phosphate groups PO4, while the NMR chemical shifts are sensitive to the non-equivalent phosphorus and sodium ions present in these substituted samples. As both Raman and NMR spectroscopies are local probes, they offer tools to distinguish between these different phosphorus and phosphate groups, according to their structural site and local environment, especially the type of cation substituent. A convenient decomposition of the Raman and NMR spectra into Gaussian–Lorentzian components leads us to propose an assignment of the main observed bands of these substituted β-TCPs.
