Die Schichtdicke zählt hierbei zu den technologisch wichtigen Parametern. Abgeleitet von Anwenderinteressen, werden für die Röntgenreflektometrie (XRR bzw. GIXR), Elektronenstrahl-Mikroanalyse (EPMA) und Röntgenfluoreszenzanalyse (XRF) einerseits und die Ellipsometrie andererseits zugeschnittene Schichtdickenmaßverkörperungen (SDM) entwickelt, gefertigt und untersucht. Das Ziel ist die Bereitstellung praxistauglicher, kalibrierter SDM, im weiteren Schichtdickennormale (SDN) genannt. T1 - SPR enhanced ellipsometric gas monitoring on thin iron doped tin oxide layers N2 - In this work, thin iron doped tin oxide layers (3–6 nm) were investigated with regard to gas sensitivity by means of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect with ellipsometric readout. The experimental set-up was a Kretschmann configuration with gold as metal layer. The sensor system was exposed to different concentrations of methane in the low ppm range and the sensor response of an uncoated gold layer compared to a gold layer coated with iron doped tin oxide. The additional layer effects stability with regard to drift behavior of the sensor and an increase in sensitivity. Furthermore, the sensor is able to detect the toxic gas carbon monoxide in low concentration range (down to 0.5 ppm). The thin layers were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, secondary electron microscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry. The possible mechanisms taking place on the surface are discussed. For the industrial application of this method, layered certified reference materials (CRMs) are needed to ensure accuracy, as well as comparability between individual users. A survey of existing CRMs has been conducted to evaluate the availability of layered CRMs with appropriate characteristics. No materials with the desirable characteristics necessary for efficient implementation were found. These results indicate a need for the production of new layered CRMs. The survey was conducted by an advisory group assembled as part of the activities of the Glow Discharge Spectrometry Subcommittee (ISO TC201/SC8) associated with the ISO Technical Committee on Surface Chemical Analysis (ISO TC201). Fabry-Perot layer stacks as information carriers in combination with imaging ellipsometry as optical read-out system provide all-in-one anti-counterfeiting capability that may establish the new security level 'encoded forensic'. Different layer designs are described with regard to all three security levels: public features (e.g. color and tilt effect) perceptible by the human eye, hidden features (e.g. spectroscopic response in the UV or IR), and forensic features (ellipsometric quantities Ψ and Δ as a function of wavelength λ and angle of incidence AOI). Physically uncloneable functions (PUF) could be realized as a result of a multi-material and a multi-parameter deposition approach as well as by means of specific design features of the Fabry-Perot layer stack. Hence, they are not subject to any reverse engineering strategies. T1 - A certified reference material for the scratch test N2 - Adhesion and other mechanical behaviour of coatings is at present routinely tested in industry and research organisations using the scratch test. The test has been the subject of a European Standard prEN 1071-3:2000 established by the European Standards Committee CEN TC184 WG5. A previous European project on the development and validation of test methods for thin hard coatings—FASTE—revealed that uncertainties in the Rockwell C stylus tip shape represent a major source of error for the scratch-test method. Therefore a follow-up project—REMAST—was started to develop and certify a reference material as a quality control tool for the testing and qualification of scratch-test instruments. In addition, a considerable effort was devoted to improve the scratch stylus manufacturing process. This paper presents the results of the REMAST project. During a feasibility study, two candidate materials—titanium nitride (TiN) and diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings both on high speed steel substrates—were evaluated. Because of the lower sensitivity to styli tip shape variations and higher data scatter observed for the TiN coating, DLC was chosen as the reference material to be certified. One thousand samples were produced, as well as qualified styli to carry out the certification campaign, including homogeneity and stability testing. Nine independent laboratories were involved in the certification exercise, and the data were statistically analysed to obtain the certified critical load values and their uncertainty ranges. A certified reference material BCR-692 is available for verification purposes. This presents three repeatable failure events at certified critical load intervals and can provide a good indication of overall scratch-test instrument performance, including stylus condition and calibration. It is also useful as a diagnostic tool, providing a means of sensitive monitoring of machine and stylus performance over extended periods. Considerable improvement of the quality of scratch styli was achieved by the strict control of all manufacturing steps. In many instances, the legal authentication of a product, a material or a document is required. Among the surface-based encoded labels, bar codes and data matrices are most frequently applied. They are publicly visible. The material itself is irrelevant, only a sufficient optical contrast is required. However, a strong material dependence of the label can be achieved by means of Fabry-Perot layer stacks. Stack designs are described with regard to all three security levels: public features (e.g. color and tilt effect) perceptible by the human eye, hidden features (e.g. optical response in a given spectral range) detectable by commonly available instruments and forensic features (ellipsometric quantities Ψ and Δ as a function of wavelength λ and angle of incidence AOI) only detectable by sophisticated instruments. In der Beanspruchung auf Zug ist die Probe beidseitig, und um das Einleiten von Querkräften zu verhindern, oft doppeltkardanisch einzuspannen. In jedem Falle handelt es sich um Ein-Proben-Prüfungen. Bei der Zentrifugentechnologie wird mit der Zentrifugalkraft als Prüfkraft erstmals in einer Mehr-Proben-Anordnung gearbeitet. Da die Proben nur einseitig unterstützt werden müssen, ist die Beladung über einfaches Einstecken realisierbar. Mit dem Auf-Tisch-Prüfsystem können bis zu acht Proben gleichzeitig auf Zug oder Druck beansprucht werden. Herein, representative low-cost materials, including carbon steel X70/1.8977 and low alloyed steel 1.7225, were embedded in mortar to mimic the realistic casing-mortar interface. Two types of cement were investigated: (1) Dyckerhoff Variodur commercial Portland cement, representing a highly acidic resistant cement and (2) Wollastonite, which can react with CO2 and become stable under a CO2 stream due to the carbonation process. Exposure tests were performed under 10 MPa and at 333 K in artificial aquifer fluid for up to 20 weeks, revealing crevice corrosion and uniform corrosion instead of expected pitting corrosion. To clarify the role of cement, simulated pore water was made by dispersing cement powder in aquifer fluid and used as a solution to expose steels. Surface analysis, accompanied by element mapping on exposed specimens and their crosssections, was carried out to trace the chloride intrusion and corrosion process that followed. However, the safety issue and cost-effectiveness hinder the future of CCS. For the reliability and safety issues of injection wells, the corrosion resistance of the materials used needs to be determined. In this study, representative low-cost materials including carbon steel 1.8977 and low alloyed steel 1.7225 were investigated in simulated pore water at 333 K and under CO2 saturation condition to represent the worst-case scenario: CO2 diffusion and aquifer fluid penetration. These simulated pore waters were made from relevant cement powder to mimic the realistic casing-cement interface. Electrochemical studies were carried out using the pore water made of cement powder dissolved in water in comparison with those dissolved in synthetic aquifer fluid, to reveal the effect of cement as well as formation water on the steel performance. Two commercially available types of cement were investigated: Dyckerhoff Variodur® and Wollastonite. Variodur® is a cement containing high performance binder with ultra-fine blast furnace slag which can be used to produce high acid resistance concrete. On the other hand, Wollastonite is an emerging natural material mainly made of CaSiO3 which can be hardened by converting to CaCO3 during CO2 injection. The results showed the pH-reducing effect of CO2 on the simulated pore water/aquifer (from more than 10 to less than 5) leading to the active corrosion process that happened on both 1.8977 and 1.7225. Electrochemical characterization showed negative free corrosion potential and polarisation curves without passive behaviors. The tested coupons suffered from pitting corrosion, which was confirmed by surface analysis. Interestingly, basing on the pit depth measurements from the tested coupons and the hardness of cement powder, it is suggested that Variodur® performed better than Wollastonite in both aspects. The electrochemical data was compared to that resulted from exposure tests to give a recommendation on material selection for bore-hole construction. Besides commonly used methods like collision-induced dissociation and electron capture or transfer dissociation, new ultraviolet light–based techniques have the potential to synergistically add to the activation methods. Here, we present a new simple, yet robust, experimental design for polychromatic activation of trapped ions using the 115–160 nm output of a commercially available deuterium lamp. The resulting continuous dissociative excitation with photons of a wide energy range from 7.7 to 10.8 eV is studied for a comprehensive set of analyte classes in both positive and negative ion modes. While being simple, affordable, compact, and of low maintenance, the new setup initiates fragmentation of most precursor ions via their known dissociation pathways. Additionally, some new fragmentation patterns were discovered. Especially, electron loss and electron capture reactions with subsequent fragmentations were observed. For oligonucleotides, peptides, carbohydrates, and organic dyes, in comparison to collision-induced dissociation, a significantly wider fragment distribution was obtained, resulting in an information increase. Since the individual photons carry enough energy to post-ionize the nascent fragments, a permanent vacuum ultraviolet light exposure inside the ion trap potentially goes along with a general increase in detection capability. As model system for a concave curvature, a set of three spherical microscopic indents in silicon (100) of different sizes was prepared by instrumented indentation testing using a spherical indenter. For reference, these samples were characterized by AFM to reveal the topography of each structure. The concavelike indents were analyzed by Mueller-Matrix imaging ellipsometry to extract lateral intensity images of 12 elements of the Mueller-Matrix. As a result of the detailed analysis of the image elements m22, m23, and m14, it was possible to correlate intensity changes and symmetry properties to depolarization and cross polarization induced by the edge threshold and the curved surface of the indent. This is particularly true for the proteome: protein quantification always follows protein identification. To obtain useful and reliable quantitative data, rather sophisticated strategies using electrospray and MALDI mass spectrometry have been developed, which allow relative and sometimes even absolute quantification. All of those strategies have merits and limitations. In order to overcome some of these limits, methods based on the reliable and sensitive detection and quantification of heavy metals present in proteins using inductively coupled plasma (ICP)-MS have been reported. With specific labels carrying heavy metals, the applicability of ICP-MS has been extended to almost every protein. One of such covalently bound metal tags, allowing the quantification of low abundant proteins, uses 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane N,N',N'',N''-tetraacetic acid (DOTA) chelate complexes carrying lanthanides as the metal core. In this review the scope and limitations of peptide and protein quantification will be addressed. The metal tags do not only provide low detection limits, but also due to the large number of different lanthanides and lanthanide isotopes, multiplexing capabilities and previously unknown accuracy based on inherently possible isotope dilution methods came into reach. The developed workflows, including electrophoretic and chromatographic separation and preconcentration techniques, will be addressed to allow a comparison with already established procedures. Two types of samples, Ti–N layer and V–N layer, respectively, with chemical compositions close to stoichiometry and a thickness of ~3 µm, deposited on a steel substrate, have been provided to the RR participants. Additionally, another type of sample, a (100 nm CrNi/100 nm Cu) multilayer (ML) stack deposited on silicon wafer has also been included in the RR. This sample can be used as a CRM for checking GD spectrometer conditions and it has been proved helpful in further development of GDS instrumentation and methodology. Recently, we developed metalcoded affinity tagging (MeCAT) as an alternative for accurate and sensitive quantification of peptides and proteins. In addition to absolute quantification via inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, MeCAT also enables sequence analysis via electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry. In the current study, we developed a new labeling approach utilizing an iodoacetamide MeCAT reagent (MeCAT-IA). The MeCAT-IA approach shows distinct advantages over the previously used MeCAT with maleinimide reactivity such as higher labelling efficiency and the lack of diastereomer formation during labeling. Here, we present a careful characterization of this new method focusing on the labeling process, which yields complete tagging with an excess of reagent of 1.6 to 1, less complex chromatographic behavior, and fragmentation characteristics of the tagged peptides using the iodoacetamide MeCAT reagent.
