T1 - Development of phytotoxicity and composition of a soil treated with olive mill wastewater (OMW): an incubation study N2 - Background and aims Olive mill wastewater (OMW) generated in Mediterranean countries is partly disposed of on soil. Its underlying fate mechanisms and influences on plant growth are still largely unknown. Our goal was to understand OMW organic matter (OMW-OM) degradation in soil and its phytotoxic effects. We hypothesized that OMW phytotoxicity decreased with degradation of its phenolic components. Methods In a 60 day incubation study, we monitored soil respiration, extractable total phenolic content (TPC) and carbon isotope ratio (δ13C) of OMW treated Israeli soil. The soil was extracted using accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) and its extracts were exemplarily analyzed for four phenolic substances by LC/MS. Phytotoxicity of soil and soil extracts were tested using a Lepidium sativum seed germination bioassay. Results Soil respiration was 2.5 times higher for OMW treated soil with two respiration maxima and indicated a degradation of up to 27 % of the added OMW-OM. Four phases of OMW-OM degradation were identified: (i) degradation of easily degradable OMW-OM and transformation of phenolic compounds, (ii) intermediate suppression of phytotoxicity, (iii) degradation of phytotoxic phenolic compounds and (iv) significant physical immobilization of phytotoxic compounds. Conclusion Environmental conditions during and after OMW disposal on soil ought to favor fast degradation of OMW-OM, minimizing their physical immobilization and phytotoxic effects. By cleaning used brushes under the tap cadmium can enter the food chain via waste water treatment and subsequent agricultural application of the sewage sludge. It was estimated that 110 kg Cd per year is spread on agricultural land via this exposure route. Other sources of Cd amount to almost 120 tons per year. The mobility of Cd from pigments was studied in a field-like scenario by leaching experiments using soil samples amended with sewage sludge and spiked with Cd pigments in percolation columns. The redox conditions were confirmed to be the decisive factor for the release of Cd. The release of Cd from artists’ paints was in most cases 1% or lower in the experiments performed. Cd from artists’ paints in sewage sludge applied in agriculture will be mobilized for intake by crops or to leaching either by oxidation of sulfide to sulfate or by dissolution at lower pH values. The quantity of Cd from artists’ paints calculated in the restriction dossier is however negligible compared to other sources of Cd to agricultural soil. Therefore ECHA did not consider the proposed restriction to be the most appropriate EU wide measure to address the negligible level of risk. Their potential to leach into water during the aging process was investigated using column percolation tests. Aging-related changes on the surface of the material were characterised by IR measurements indicating oxidation reactions with the formation of new adsorption bands (C=O, C–O and OH), especially in the case of photooxidative aging. These findings were confirmed by the identification of leachable organic compounds. Leaching of total organic carbon, Cl, Ca, Cu and Zn is clearly affected by changes due to aging, and their release is increased after photooxidative aging. In general, exposure to photooxidative conditions shows a greater influence on aging and thus on leaching and seems to be the more important mechanism for the aging of microplastic in the environment. Comparison with the total content of inorganic species revealed that, for most elements, less than 3% of the total content is released after 2000 h of photooxidative aging. Cadmiumgelb PY35) verwendet und können beim Reinigen gebrauchter Pinsel mit Wasser über das Abwasser in die Kläranlagen eingetragen werden, wo sie auf Grund ihrer geringen Wasserlöslichkeit im Klärschlamm verbleiben. Bei landwirtschaftlicher Nutzung des Klärschlamms, kann das Cadmium nach Aufnahme in Pflanzen in die menschliche Nahrungskette gelangen. Aufnahme von Cadmium erhöht die Wahrscheinlichkeit an Brustkrebs zu erkranken und führt durch eine Verringerung der Knochendichte zu einer erhöhten Anzahl an Knochenbrüchen. Daher wurde bei der europäischen Chemikalienbehörde ECHA ein Verbotsantrag nach Annex XV von einem Mitgliedsland gestellt. Mengenmäßig ist der Betrag an Cadmium, der über diesen Expositionsweg auf Agrarflächen eingetragen werden klein: 120 kg im Vergleich zu 120 Tonnen aus anderen Quellen. Zur Abschätzung des Risikos ist allerdings nicht nur die Gesamtmenge entscheidend, sondern auch die Mobilität der Schadstoffe. Um diese zu untersuchen wurden mit Cadmiumpigmenten dotierte Klärschlämme mit Boden gemischt und das Auswaschverhalten mit Hilfe von Säulenperkolationstests untersucht. Das Cadmium liegt in den Pigmenten als Cadmiumsulfid vor, dessen Löslichkeit stark vom Redoxpotential abhängt und dem pH-Wert abhängt. Daher wurden die Versuche unter verschiedenen Redoxbedingungen und mit einem sauren Eluenten durchgeführt. Eluate wurden über einen Zeitraum von 68 h gesammelt und der pH-Wert, die Leitfähigkeit, die Trübung, Konzentration an organischen Kohlenstoff (TOC) und Cd bestimmt. Das Redoxpotential sinkt nach Start der Elution schnell und hängt von dem Gehalt an Kohlenstoff im Boden ab: Je höher der Gehalt ist, um so langsamer sinkt das Redoxpotential. Einen eindeutigen Zusammenhang zwischen Cadmiumfreisetzung und Redoxpotential konnte aber nicht gefunden werden. Insgesamt wurden maximal 2 % des vorhandenen Cadmiums freigesetzt. Im Vergleich zu Versuchen mit nicht dotierten Böden, der selbst auch geringe Mengen an Cadmium enthielt, konnte keine erhöhte Freisetzung beobachtet werden. Emissionsverläufe wurden sowohl für an-organische Komponenten als auch für organische Substanzen in den Eluaten ermittelt. Auslaugbare organische Substanzen wurden zuvor in Screeningtests identifiziert. Um die mögliche Freisetzung von Stoffen aus Bauprodukten beurteilen zu können, ist es erforderlich, Emissionsverläufe zu beschreiben. Dazu sind die verwendeten Testverfahren geeignet. Um Baupro-dukte mit einem Blauen Engel als „Produkte mit geringer Auslaugung“ auszuloben, müssen die aus-laugbaren Substanzen komplett bekannt sein. Für organische Verbindungen ist das noch eine Heraus-forderung. Außerdem erfordert die Bewertung der Testergebnisse sowohl Übertragungsmodelle, die Vorhersagen über freisetzbare Stoffmengen unter Anwendungsbedingungen ermöglichen, als auch Vorgaben zu tolerierbaren Umweltkonzentrationen. Hier besteht noch Handlungsbedarf. N2 - Leaching tests were performed on different construction products that can be exposed to precipitation during service life. Varnishes for outdoor application, exterior thermal insulation systems, roof tiles and polymeric roof membranes were included in the test program. Leaching tests according to the dynamic surface leaching test (DSLT) as developed by CEN TC 351 and the immersion test according to EN 16105 were performed using these products. Emission curves were determined for inorganic as well as organic substances in the eluates. Leachable organic sub-stances in the eluates were identified by screening tests prior to the leaching tests. It is necessary to describe emission curves to be able to evaluate possible release of substances from construction products. The applied leaching tests are suitable to describe leaching processes. All leach-able substances need to be known in order to award the ecolabel ‘Blue Angel’. This is still challenging in case of organic substances. In addition, evaluation of the test results requires transfer models to predict leachable amounts under service conditions as well as requirements on concentrations that can be tolerated in environmental compartments. Monitoring studies showed that compounds attributed to construction products are found in storm water and the receiving bodies of water and that the release of biocides in urban areas can be comparable to the input of pesticides from agricultural uses. Therefore, a prospective risk assessment of such products is necessary. Laboratory leaching tests have been developed by the Technical Committee CEN/TC 351 and are ready to use. One major task in the future will be the evaluation of the leaching test results, as concentrations found in laboratory experiments are not directly comparable to the field situations. Another Task will be the selection of compounds to be considered for construction products, which are often a complex mixture and contain additives, pigments, stabilization agents, etc. The formulations of the products may serve as a starting point, but total content is a poor predictor for leachability, and analysis of the eluates is necessary. In some cases, nontargeted approaches might be required to identify compounds in the eluates. In the identification process, plausibility checks referring to available information should be included. Ecotoxicological tests are a complementary method to test eluates, and the combined effects of all compounds—including Degradation products—are included. A bio test battery has been applied in a round robin test and was published in a guidance document. Published studies on the ecotoxicity of construction products show the tests’ suitability to distinguish between products with small and larger effects on the environment. Information on the total content of these substances in the product is not sufficient to assess its envrionmental impact since it does not consider realistic exposure conditions.The impact of these compounds is often assessed by using the total content in the product. This estimation lacks realistic exposure conditions. Concerning the pathway to soil and groundwater by contact with rain or seepage water leaching tests, which were developed and standardized by the European Committee for Standardization, are available. While for secondary construction products and waste this investigation of the leaching behaviour is standard procedure and is already part of regulation in Germany (draft ordinance on reuse of mineral waste) and within Europe (landfill directive) the release from primary construction products got in the focus more recently. Several monitoring studies found unexpected high concentrations of substances used as herbicides and fungicides in surface water and stormwater originating from urban areas. As some of these compounds are even banned for the use in agricultural applications in Europe alternative sources as roof materials and façade coatings exposed to rain were suggested. Further field and laboratory tests confirmed construction products as sources of these substances in water. The aim of this presentation is to show exemplary results of existing leaching methods and underline the strength and weaknesses of the test system with selected examples from our work. We especially draw the attention to the research which is still needed to close the gap between the results of leaching experiments and the subsequent risk assessment of the products. Tonnen Hausmüllverbrennungsaschen (HMVA) pro Jahr an. Aus diesen werden nur ca. 8 % Metalle (davon ca. 1 % NE-Metalle) zurückgewonnen. Zur Beurteilung des Wertstoffpotentials werden die HMVA nach standardisierten Vorschriften beprobt, für die Analytik vorbehandelt/vorbereitet/aufgearbeitet und auf ihre Inhaltsstoffe analysiert. Im nachfolgenden Beitrag wird der Schwerpunkt auf die Probenvorbehandlung und -vorbereitung gelegt, wobei der Merkmalstransfer von der Ausgangs-(Feld-)Probe über die Laborprobe und die Prüfprobe bis zur Mess-(Analysen-) Probe am Beispiel von NE-Metallen einer nassaufbereiteten HMVA untersucht wurde. Die Ergebnisse wurden mit Hilfe statistischer Methoden bewertet. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Verteilung der NE-Metalle in den einzelnen Schritten der Probenbehandlung elementspezifisch ist. Bei Blei ist ein Erhalt der Merkmalsverteilung über alle Behandlungsschritte erkennbar. Bei Kupfer nehmen die Konzentrationen in den aufeinander folgenden Behandlungsschritten deutlich ab. Die Ursache könnte das in der Feinfraktion enthaltene metallische Kupfer mit seinen spezifischen Eigenschaften sein. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- More than 5 billion tons of municipal solid waste incineration bottom ashes (MSWI BA) are generated by incineration per year in Germany. Currently only 8 % of metals (of these 1 % are non-ferrous metals) are recovered from MSWI BA. For characterization of recovery potential, MSWI BA samples have to be taken, pre-treated and analyzed according to standardized methods. This manuscript focuses on sample pre-treatment and preparation of a MSWI BA sample aiming to investigate the characteristics transfer over the process of sub-sampling from the original (field) sample to the laboratory sample, test sample until the analytical sample. All results have been evaluated with statistical methods. The results show that influence of each single pre-treatment and preparation step on metal content differs for the individual metals. For lead a conservation of characteristics distribution can be observed, while for copper a continuous decline of solid concentration is observed over all preparation steps. One possible reason may be the fact that copper is mainly contained in the fine fraction as metallic copper with specific properties. T1 - Calibration and field application of passive sampling for episodic exposure to polar organic pesticides in streams N2 - Rainfall-triggered runoff is a major driver of pesticide input in streams. Only few studies have examined the suitability of passive sampling to quantify such episodic exposures. In this study, we used Empore-TM styrene-divinylbenzene reverse phase sulfonated disks (SDB disks) and event-driven water samples (EDS) to assess exposure to 15 fungicides and 4 insecticides in 17 streams in a German vineyard area during 4 rainfall events. We also conducted a microcosm experiment to determine the SDB-disk sampling rates and provide a free-software solution to derive sampling rates under time-variable exposure. Sampling rates ranged from 0.26 to 0.77 L d-1 and time-weighted average (TWA) concentrations from 0.05 to 2.11 µg/L. The 2 sampling systems were in good agreement and EDS exceeded TWA concentrations on average by a factor of 3. Our study demonstrates that passive sampling is suitable to quantify episodic exposures from polar organic pesticides. T1 - Recommendation for a test battery for the ecotoxicological evaluation of the environmental safety of construction products N2 - The European Construction Products Regulation allows Member States to adopt rules for evaluating the environmental impact of their buildings. The aim of the project was to develop recommendations for a test battery for the ecotoxicological assessment of the environmental impact of construction products for outdoor use and contribute to the European harmonization of test methods. From a shortlist of 39 products 20 products were included in the ecotoxicological testing program. Monolithic and plate-like construction products were eluted in the Dynamic Surface Leaching test (DSLT) in accordance with CEN/TS 16637-2, granular products were eluted in a one stage batch test in accordance with DIN EN 12457-1. The eluates were examined in four aquatic toxicity tests (algae, daphnia, luminescent bacteria, fish eggs), a genotoxicity test (umu test) and in the respirometer test (OECD 301 F). Here, low to very high ecotoxicity was observed (up to a dilution factor of 1536). Six out of 8 eluates, whose TOC exceeded 10 mg L⁻1 showed a good biodegradability above 75%. The intra-laboratory repeatability of the Lowest Ineffective Dilution (LID) usually was within ±1 dilution steps (ecotoxicity tests) and ±2 dilution steps (leaching and ecotoxicity tests). This is acceptable, when considering that the overall variability of sample preparation, leaching test, and bioassays add up. The conclusions lead to practical recommendations for a suitable combination of leaching and ecotoxicity tests. Depending on the compound and on the matrix only a small portion is transferred to environment and therefore a risk assessment should be based on the available portion. Concerning the pathway to soil and groundwater by contact with rain or seepage water leaching tests were developed and standardized by CEN to determine the release potential of construction products. Chemical analysis in the eluates can be combined with eco-toxicological testing. In this presentation an overview about existing leaching methods is given using selected examples of our work. We especially draw the attention to research which is still needed to close the gap between the results of leaching experiments and the subsequent risk assessment of the products. The eluates of 15 paints for outdoor use were used for a screening of organic compounds and the concentration of cations and anions were determined. Concerning the inorganic constituents only a small number of elements were present with concentrations higher than the limit of detection. Thus, leaching of potential hazardous chemicals is probably of higher concern. Several glycol ethers, polyalkylene glycols and some surfactants and coalescing agents have been identified. Among these only the latter are classified as hazardous to aquatic organisms. The identification of the organic compounds is a time consuming and labor-intensive step due to the high number of chemicals produced and used. Using eco-toxicity tests provides information on the environmental risk without the need for of chemical identification of all compounds. The screening of a set of construction products shows that only a part of eluates causes adverse effects in the test and that such screening can be used as a first step in the assessment of construction products. If this kind of testing is included in the evaluation concept an in depth chemical analysis is only needed for products showing adverse effects. Determination of the eluate concentration after leaching enables to determine the potential release to the environment and to focus on the available fraction. However, limit values or other concepts to use this information in risk assessment are still missing. NSO-H sind ähnlich toxisch wie PAK, aber polarer und damit hydrophiler. Da NSO-H an kontaminierten Standorten lediglich einen geringen Anteil des Schadstoffinventars ausmachen, wurde ihnen in der Vergangenheit wenig Aufmerksamkeit zuteil und sie werden im Gegensatz zu PAK nicht routinemäßig erfasst. Aufgrund ihrer teilweise ausgeprägten Persistenz und der vergleichsweisen guten Wasserlöslichkeit bilden sie trotz der eher geringen Anfangskonzentrationen große Schadstofffahnen mit geringen Konzentrationen aus. Mikrobielle Abbauprozesse bewirken dabei im Verlauf der Fahne Veränderungen der Anteile der Einzelsubstanzen zueinander. In der Nähe des Schadensherdes dominieren meist PAK, im Abstrom sinkt deren Konzentration allerdings schneller, so dass hier die NSO-H die dominierende Schadstoffgruppe darstellen. Comparative leaching tests were performed using four PFAS-contaminated soils whose concentration patterns of 10 selected perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) differed due to the two types of contamination sources. This study aimed to evaluate the equivalence of two usual laboratory-scale leaching test procedures, batch and column percolation tests, at liquid-to-solid ratios (L/S) of 2 l/kg, which is the current practice within the German assessment framework, and 10 l/kg (relevant for some EU regulations such as the landfill directive). The differences between the replicates of leaching tests investigating PFAS were smaller for column percolation tests than for batch tests, probably mainly due to the greater sample size and the better representativeness of the sample portion analyzed. It was observed that batch tests overestimate the release of shorter-chain PFAS, whereby the effect was greater with carboxylic than with sulfonic acids. Currently, the limits of detection of analyses given by the DIN standard with regard to PFCA and PFSA in soils are partly not sufficient to detect very low contents, whereas the detection of selected PFCA and PFSA in eluates is more sensitive, in accordance with the available standards. This results in limitations when calculating mass balances.
