A1 - Wöstmann, Jens T1 - Test specimen concepts in regard to quality assurance and validation of nondestructive testing in civil engineering N2 - The process of ensuring reliability of NDT applications contains various aspects, such as determining the performance and probability of success, the uncertainty in measurement, the provision of clear and functional procedures and ensuring the correct application accordingly. Test specimens have become powerful elements in supporting many of these aspects. Within the committee for NDT in Civil Engineering (NDT-CE) of the German Society for Nondestructive Testing (DGZfP), the subcommittee on Quality Assurance (UA-QS) therefore addresses the design and the integration of test specimens in the quality assurance process. Depending on the specific purpose, the requirements on test specimens can vary significantly based on the defined simulated scenario. The most prominent purposes of test specimens might be seen in providing references for inspection systems in regard to function control, calibration and validation. Further aspects can be parametric studies, basic investigation of physical principles related to NDT or a simplified and therefore comprehensive demonstration of inspection concepts (e.g. for teaching purposes). The specific purpose of a test specimen dictates the requirements regarding its conception, including the exact design, the material or the fabrication accuracy and the conditioning. In the development of a general guideline by the UA-QS for application-specific procedures and their validation, the use of test specimens is addressed and specific concepts for the design of test specimens are made. This includes the analysis of the measurement process regarding any given application, deriving an adequate calibration approach for it and designing test specimens (calibration specimens) accordingly. Furthermore, it includes the validation of the procedure taking into account all conditions related to the specific application in the field. The validation requires a statistically sufficient number of trials. Thorough evaluation of each trial can only be established if the ground-truth is known. Therefore, test specimens providing a realistic but controlled simulation of the inspection problem are valuable and indispensable elements in the validation process. The requirement of being fully realistic will often not be possible to fulfill due to practical restrictions. Any aspect that cannot be included in the simulation realistically needs to be simulated conservatively. This again, requires a sufficient understanding of the inspection principle and technique to ensure conservativeness. Among other quality-assurance-related aspects, the UA-QS establishes concepts and guidelines regarding sound and efficient approaches for the specific purposes of test specimens. This subcommittee brings together representatives of different Groups along the entire value chain of NDT-CE, including researchers, practitioners, manufacturers and clients. They all work together in establishing a common understanding and level of quality assurance in the industry. A1 - Wöstmann, Jens T1 - NDT procedures in relation to quality assurance and validation of nondestructive testing in civil engineering N2 - The field of non-destructive testing of civil structures (NDT-CE) has been continuously growing. Due to the complexity and diversity of civil constructions as well as the heterogeneity of concrete, specific standards or guidelines for the application of modern NDT-CE are still missing. The development of individual solutions is the current approach, which is just as challenging as it is common for NDT-CE. With the increasing development and commercialization of NDT-CE technology, the group of practitioners is growing. To ensure a good level of quality in the industry, it appears necessary to establish adequate means. Naturally, the performance of NDT-CE methods regarding a specific application is strongly dependent on choosing the most suitable inspection technique and applying it correctly, generally referred to as the inspection procedure in the field of NDT. There are well-defined guidelines regarding procedure documentation and handling in many fields of NDT (e.g. nuclear, aerospace or automotive) according to the high importance of procedures in assuring a successful and reliable application. For a long time, this has not always been the case with NDT-CE, which is still considered a unique discipline of NDT. Part of the reason for that might be the young development state of NDTCE, the heterogeneity of building materials like concrete, timber or masonry as a material and the diversity of civil structures. In consequence, NDT-CE procedure development is considered challenging. Among other aspects, addressed in the subcommittee on Quality Assurance (UA-QS) within the committee for NDT-CE of the German Society for Nondestructive Testing (DGZfP), part of its work aims at establishing an adequate basis for NDT-CE procedure development. While some of the highly developed approaches from other industries are taken into consideration, they need to be analyzed regarding their suitability for NDT-CE and adapted accordingly. For a procedure to be as defined as possible, it needs to contain sufficient information, such as the scope and limitations regarding material, geometry and condition of the test object, inspection parameters, calibration, data acquisition, analysis criteria as well as requirements regarding the inspection personnel. For a successful implementation in the field, it is important to define the specific procedure as precisely as possible. Despite the necessity of a great amount of information to be included, the procedure needs to be suitable for efficient field application. The UA-QS is developing a guideline for NDT-CE procedures suitable for application in this field of NDT to ensure correct and reproducible application. To demonstrate and evaluate this concept, specific examples of procedures are also produced. In particular, the UA-QS has developed a procedure for the detection and positioning of tendon ducts using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). T1 - On the Applicability of Plasma Assisted Chemical Micropatterning to Different Polymeric Biomaterials N2 - A plasma process sequence has been developed to prepare chemical micropatterns on polymeric biomaterial surfaces. These patterns induce a guided localized cell layover at microscopic dimension. Two subsequent plasma steps are applied. In the first functionalization step a microwave ammonia plasma introduces amino groups to obtain areas for very good cell adhesion; the second passivation step combines pattern generation and creation of cell repelling areas. This downstream microwave hydrogen plasma process removes functional groups and changes the linkages of polymer chains at the outermost surfaces. Similar results have been obtained on different polymers including polystyrene (PS), polyhydroxyethylmethacrylate (PHEMA), polyetheretherketone (PEEK), polyethyleneterephthalate (PET) and polyethylenenaphthalate (PEN). Such a rather universal chemical structuring process could widen the availability of biomaterials with specific surface preparations. T1 - Pulsed and cw microwave plasma excitation for surface functionalization in nitrogen-containing gases N2 - Results are presented of polymer surface functionalization processes in pulsed and continuous wave (cw) microwave-excited plasmas in nitrogen-containing gases under admixture of hydrogen. A maximum selectivity of 100% for amino groups with respect to all nitrogen functional groups (NH2/N) was obtained in cw microwave (MW) plasmas either for very short treatment durations below 100 µs in pure NH3, or within approximately 10 s in hydrogen-rich nitrogen-containing plasmas. The amino and overall nitrogen surface densities, NH2/C and N/C, reach up to 3.5% and 35%, respectively. Post plasma processes of functionalized polymers are discussed in the light of monofunctionalization. Down to pulse duration of 1 ms, plasma decomposition rates of NH3, determined by infrared absorption spectroscopy, are found to scale linearly with the duty cycle. In this regime, the main effect of a duty cycle variation in pulsed NH3 plasmas on surface functionalization can be interpreted to result from changes in the concentration of the dominant stable species in the gas phase, NH3, N2 and H2, which are activated by subsequent plasma pulses. With increasing duty cycle, NH3 decomposition to N2 and 3H2 more and more dominates over the supply of fresh NH3. The nitrogen-removing role of hydrogen in the plasma is discussed in detail, whereas the role of the numerous transient nitrogen-containing species remains to be studied in the future. For biomaterial applications, the density and selectivity of the functionalization are of particular importance, because functional groups control the immobilization of biomolecules. Therefore, surface modification of biomaterials is a challenging task for low-pressure plasma technique. Plasma processes have been successfully applied to various polymer types in order to generate multifunctional surfaces. This paper discusses the present state and the prospects of non-coating plasma processes to generate mono functional surfaces of controlled amino group density. Such surfaces appear most desirable for many applications. The results of various microwave- and radio-frequency- excited plasma processes reported in the literature are reviewed and compared to a sequence of experiments that was conducted in a UHV reaction environment. Non-thermal plasmas are especially well suited for thermally damageable polymers. The effect of hydrogen admixture to discharges in nitrogen and ammonia is discussed in detail. The optimization of process parameters lead to highly selective amino functionalization of high density. The selectivity reached 100% -NH2/N at a surface density of amino groups of 3% -NH2/C. Dieser Wasserstoff kann als „chemischer Energiespeicher“ dienen und rückverstromt werden oder aber in das Erdgasnetz eingespeist wer-den. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit sind die Auswirkungen von Wasserstoffzusätzen zum Erdgas im Hin-blick auf den Explosionsschutz untersucht und die sicherheitstechnischen Kenngrößen für Erdgas-Wasserstoff-Gemische bestimmt worden. Von besonderem Interesse waren diejenigen Kenngrößen, die für reines Methan (Erdgas) und Wasserstoff deutliche Unterschiede aufweisen. Anders als bei vielen Literaturquellen, sollten im Rahmen dieser Arbeit die im Bereich der ATEX geltenden, harmo-nisierten Normen zur Bestimmung der Kenngrößen angewendet werden. Die Untersuchungen ergaben, dass bei einem Zusatz von bis zu 10 Mol-% Wasserstoff keine der un-tersuchten Kenngrößen relevant beeinflusst wird. Die Gemische haben nur geringfügig erweiterte Explosionsbereiche und bleiben, wie die reinen Erdgase, in der Explosionsgruppe IIA. Auch die ma-ximalen Explosionsdrücke und die maximalen zeitlichen Druckanstiege bei Gasexplosionen werden nur wenig beeinflusst. Vergleichende Berechnungen zur Festlegung von explosionsgefährdeten Be-reichen (Ex-Zonen) auf Basis von Gasausbreitungsberechnungen ergaben ebenfalls nur geringfüge Unterschiede zum reinen Erdgas. Der Einsatz von Gaswarngeräten, die für Erdgas kalibriert wurden, ist für Erdgas-Wasserstoff-Gemische grundsätzlich möglich, erfordert aber eine gesonderte Sicher-heitsbewertung und ggf. eine Nachjustierung. Lower explosion limits (LEL) and upper explosion limits (UEL), limiting oxygen concentrations (LOC), maximum experimental safety gaps (MESG), maximum explosion pressures (pmax) and maximum rates of pressure rise (dp/dt)max were determined experimentally in dependence of the hydrogen fraction. Adding hydrogen did mainly effect the UEL, LOC, MESG and (dp/dt)max. The mixtures become more "critical" concerning the explosion hazards with increasing hydrogen fraction. However, the dependency of the safety characteristics from the hydrogen fraction is mainly not linear. Adding up to 10% hydrogen to natural gas had nearly no effect on the safety characteristics. More significant effects on the safety characteristics were observed at hydrogen fractions of more than 25%. For example the explosion group changes from IIA to IIB. Considering the huge explosion region and very high (dp/dt)max of hydrogen compared to natural gas, even adding 50% hydrogen to natural gas has a rather small effect on these characteristics. Furthermore pmax of hydrogen/natural-gas mixtures can be calculated with good accuracy assuming ideal adiabatic conditions. EL and LOC of natural gas/hydrogen mixtures in ternary systems with inert gas and air were calculated in dependence of the type of inert gas with the so called “model of constant adiabatic flame temperature profiles”. Compared to other heptazine-based materials, which are typically prepared at high temperatures and have recently received much interest as metal-free photocatalysts, the low-temperature protocol applied here allows the defined introduction of organic functional groups within the polymer backbone. The structure of HMP-3 contains alternating heptazine and benzothiadiazole moieties as electron acceptors connected by aminobenzene bridges as electron donors. The resulting material leads to enhanced hydrogen evolution compared to graphitic carbon nitride materials prepared at high temperatures (>500 8C) most probably because of the stabilization of photogenerated charge carriers in the D–A structure. Based on the spectral decomposition of the elasticity matrix as proposed by Theocaris, we generalize the one-dimensional analysis of the material model into three dimensions and discuss appropriate simplifications to reduce the amount of unknowns for the material description. Then, a decomposition approach that considers the real valued frequency dependence of the viscoelastic moduli and the real valued frequency dependence of their attenuation separately is proposed. The Scaled Boundary Finite Element Method is used for the efficient computation of the phase velocity dispersion and the modal wave fields given a frequency dependent but real valued viscoelasticity matrix. Utilizing the modal expansion approach, the transmitting and receiving transducer are taken into account to compute the modal amplitudes. Combining these modal amplitudes, the phase velocity dispersion and re-introducing the viscoelastic attenuation results in a transfer function of the viscoelastic waveguide including excitation and receiving conditions. The performance of the proposed simulation model is shown by comparison to measurements taken on a polypropylene sample. Admixture of up to 10 mole% hydrogen to natural gas has very low influence on safety characteristics for explosion protection. With increasing hydrogen fraction the mixtures become mainly more „critical“ considering explosion protection, an substantial influence on explosion protection occurs for hydrogen fractions of more than 25 mole%. A series of easily accessible bipyridinium fluorophores, whose emission is quenched by a twisted intramolecular charge-transfer (TICT) mechanism, is reported. Encapsulation in a cucurbit[7]uril host gave a 1:1 complex exhibiting a moderate emission increase due to destabilization of the TICT state inside the apolar cucurbituril cavity. A much stronger fluorescence enhancement is observed in 2:2 complexes with the larger cucurbit[8]uril, which is caused by additional conformational restriction of rotations around the aryl/aryl bonds. Because the cucurbituril complexes are pH switchable, this system represents an efficient supramolecular ON/OFF fluorescence switch. This material is characterized by a columnar grain morphology with some crystallographic texture. The material is subjected to elastic loading to determine the diffraction elastic constants (DECs). Furthermore, the single-crystal elastic constants (SCEC) are refined from these experiments using different micromechanical models. The results show that each micromechanical model predicts a specific set of SCEC that well describes the elastic anisotropy of PBF-LB/IN718.
