Pure magnetite powder provided a value of CoF of 0.4. Magnetite-copper mixtures tested at 400 °C revealed lower CoF values (~0.4) than those at room temperature (~0.6). Magnetite-graphite and magnetite-graphite-copper mixtures presented lower CoF values (~0.3). All systems formed a magnetite-based tribofilm and patches of metallic copper were found on the tribosurfaces of the mixtures containing copper. Carbon layers and graphite nanoinclusions were observed in the graphite mixtures. The incorporation of zirconia particles, a by-product of ball milling mixing, prevented the selective transfer of graphite and copper to the tribosurfaces of some of the samples. N2 - Abstract The use of proficiency testing schemes (PTS) by laboratories as an integral part of their quality system has been increasing in recent years. Accreditation bodies, regulators and the laboratories’ customers are increasingly using results from PTS in their relationship with laboratories. There are many PTS available in Europe in analytical chemistry; EPTIS indicates over 400. The comparability of these PTS is now a real issue, as many organisers of PTS move into new markets. The COEPT project has systematically demonstrated (in four technical sectors – water, soil, food and occupational hygiene), that there are many similarities between PTS in each sector. For example, nearly all use the z-score as a performance index. One significant difference between many PTS is the value used for the term s in the z-score equation, and this gives a range of evaluations for the same data point. Despite this, the agreement between PTS in the same sector for the evaluation of data is approximately 85%. COEPT has given us a basis for establishing the comparability of PTS and showing us where further harmonisation could occur. Periodical inspections by different non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques are performed to assess the structural integrity. The accuracy of such inspection is high ly dependent on the skills of the technician. To be more efficient automated procedures independent of human decision are needed. The costs for such inspections are also significant as they require immobilisation of aircrafts. Alternative on-line structural health monitoring (SHM) procedure capable to detect, acquire, and identify damage should permit important cost reductions but also safety increase from real-time damage assessment. The increasing application of composite materials in modern aircrafts and spacecrafts permits the development of such procedure from the embedment of sensors and actuators in the structure during manufacturing. A1 - De Waele, Wim T1 - A numerical study on fatigue strength degradation due to pitting corrosion of S355 structural steel in a marine environment N2 - This study investigates the influence of pitting corrosion on the fatigue strength of S355 steel, commonly used in offshore wind support structures. A short crack microstructural model is employed to estimate the degraded fatigue strength, effectively capturing the physics of the problem with minimal input parameters. Material characterization tests provide the key mechanical properties of S355 steel. A parametric analysis is used to examine the effects of pit shape, size, and aspect ratio. A generic relationship is identified between degraded fatigue strength and pit size for various pit aspect ratios. A sensitivity analysis reveals that the pit aspect ratio significantly influences fatigue strength, with sharper pits leading to greater reductions. The threshold stress intensity factor has a moderate effect, while in-air fatigue strength and grain size have minimal impacts. A case study is performed to evaluate the fatigue strength degradation of S355 steel exposed to the North Sea environment. Findings indicate that the most severe degradation occurs in the initial years of exposure, with the degradation rate declining over time. The results align well with experimental data, offering a robust framework for assessing structural integrity in a marine environment. Besides natural pozzolan can be used artificial ones, as calcined clays, and over a range of amorphous aluminates and silicates waste, with highly reactive function as a binder material in the presence of water and calcium hydroxide. Calcined kaolinite clays were characterized using various techniques such as XRD, thermal analysis, and NMR observing 27Al and 29Si nuclei. The results showed that there is a structural modification of the samples, from crystalline to amorphous phases with the increasing of temperature in the calcination process. Classes of fluorescence standards are defined, including instrument calibration standards for the determination and correction of instrument bias, application-specific standards based on commonly used fluorescent labels, and instrument validation standards for periodic checks of instrument performance. The need for each class of standard is addressed and on-going efforts by NMIs and others are described. Several certified reference materials (CRMs) that have recently been developed by NMIs are highlighted. These include spectral correction standards, developed independently by both NIST and BAM (Germany), and fluorescence intensity standards for flow cytometry, developed by NIST. In addition, future activities at both institutes are addressed such as the development of day-to-day intensity standards. A1 - Rübner, Katrin A1 - Günster, Jens T1 - Defect detection in additively manufactured lattices N2 - This paper investigates fast and inexpensive measurement methods for defect detection in parts produced by Additive Manufacturing (AM) with special focus on lattice parts made of ceramics. By Lithography-based Ceramic Manufacturing, parts were built both without defects and with typical defects intentionally introduced. These defects were investigated and confirmed by industrial X-ray Computed Tomography. Alternative inexpensive methods were applied afterwards on the parts such as weighing, volume determination by Archimedes method and gas permeability measurement. The results showed, that defects resulting in around 20% of change in volume and mass could be separated from parts free of defects by determination of mass or volume. Minor defects were not detectable as they were in the range of process-related fluctuations. Permeability measurement did not allow to safely identify parts with defects. The measurement methods investigated can be easily integrated in AM process chains to support quality control. A1 - Gorbushina, Anna T1 - The bright future of darkness - the rising power of black fungi: black yeasts, microcolonial fungi, and their relatives N2 - Black fungi are no longer viewed as neglected, rare, or exotic fungi—in fact, we now realize that they are all around us on a daily basis. In the past, we just have been looking at the wrong places, with inadequate detection tools, or with inappropriate isolation methods. In a way, the seemingly ubiquitous presence of black fungi is disturbing, reflecting one of the bright/dark contrasts of our research field: while scientists in the black yeast area all recognize the frustration of projects being rejected because of supposed societal insignificance, the general public tends to be afraid of these dangerous and omnipresent fungi. This fear dates back to 1934 when K. Kano described Hormiscium dermatitidis from a disfiguring facial infection in Japan. Since that time, many more severely mutilating and eventually fatal infections in apparently healthy people have been reported; the present issue of Mycopathologia contains another horrid example. Later, it was realized that these infections are related to diseases like chromoblastomycosis and primary cerebritis, which are already known for more than a century. Thus, severe black yeast diseases occurred long before organ transplantation was even invented, and in times when immune disorders like leukemia inevitably were rapidly followed by death. Black fungi belong to nature’s repertoire of primary pathogens, it seems, because they are able to kill healthy and immunocompetent individuals.
