Influence of gamma radiation on fiber’s optical, mechanical and climatic performance is investigated. The radiation-induced attenuation (RIA) in the visible and near-infrared region (0.4 μm-1.7 mm) is measured and its origins are discussed. Besides attenuation increase, radiation is also shown to decrease the thermal degradation stability of the fiber and to increase its susceptibility to water. With regard to complex fiber transmission performance upon irradiation, the optimal operation wavelength region of PF-POF-based systems intended for use in Radiation environments is determined to be around 1.1 μm. On the other hand, the investigated fiber holds potential for low-cost RIA-based optical fiber dosimetry applications with sensitivity as high as 260 dBm⁻¹/kGy in the visible region. Direct structural or spectroscopic information on the mechanism and about the hydration shell around ectoine are scarce. We combined surface plasmon resonance (SPR), confocal Raman spectroscopy, molecular dynamics simulations, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to study the local hydration shell around ectoine and its influence on the binding of a gene-S-protein (G5P) to a single-stranded DNA (dT(25)). Due to the very high hygroscopicity of ectoine, it was possible to analyze the highly stable hydration shell by confocal Raman spectroscopy. Corresponding molecular dynamics simulation results revealed a significant change of the water dielectric constant in the presence of a high molar ectoine concentration as compared to pure water. The SPR data showed that the amount of protein bound to DNA decreases in the presence of ectoine, and hence, the protein-DNA dissociation constant increases in a concentration-dependent manner. Concomitantly, the Raman spectra in terms of the amide I region revealed large changes in the protein secondary structure. Our results indicate that ectoine strongly affects the molecular recognition between the protein and the oligonudeotide, which has important consequences for osmotic regulation mechanisms. T1 - Influence of effects on nano and micro scale on the rheological performance of cement paste, mortar and concrete N2 - Chemical admixtures like superplasticisers or stabilising agents are of ever increasing importance for modern concrete technology. They liberate the workability of concrete from its dependency on water content, and thus, open the gate towards innovative and future oriented concrete technologies such as self-compacting concrete. Today, admixture addition has become common practice in concrete technology, but the understanding of their highly complex mode of operation is extremely difficult and demands for understanding of processes within the range between nanometres and centimetres. Due to its complex time-dependent, multi-phase and multi-scale behaviour, flowable concrete systems are highly complicated and cannot be described comprehensively by simple models. It is therefore extremely challenging to identify the relevant parameters that predominantly control flow phenomena on different size scales, since these may occur on any scale between the nano scale (e.g. superplasticizer adsorption) and macro scale (e.g. grading of the aggregates). The present study discusses fundamental mechanisms at the interface between particle or hydrate surfaces and the fluid phase at a very early stage of concrete formation, and links these effects to macroscopic flow phenomena. Methods are discussed that appear promising interdisciplinary tools for enhancement of the understanding of the relevant interactions that are responsible for the macroscopic flow of flowable concrete. As a result of the irradiation with a variable number of laser pulses per spot (N /spl les/ 5), several morphological changes (crater formation, rim formation, ripple structures, and cones) were observed. These effects were explored using force modulation microscopy (FMM), a technique based on scanning force microscopy, allowing the simultaneous imaging of both topography and local stiffness at a high lateral resolution. The first laser pulse induces the formation of a protruding rim (height < 20 nm, width /spl ap/ 300 nm) bordering the ablated crater. A Fourier analysis of the multipulse generated topographies reveals the formation of wavelength-sized periodic ripples (modulation depth < 100 nm) with an orientation perpendicular to that of the electric field vector of the laser radiation. Besides these morphological alterations, material modifications were also observed in the irradiated regions by means of the FMM technique. Within the ablated craters, local stiffness variations were found revealing an inhomogeneous material composition/structure as a consequence of the femtosecond pulse laser treatment. T1 - Phase and amplitude patterns in DySEM mappings of vibrating microstructures N2 - We use a dynamic scanning electron microscope (DySEM) to analyze the movement of oscillating micromechanical structures. A dynamic secondary electron (SE) signal is recorded and correlated to the oscillatory excitation of scanning force microscope (SFM) cantilever by means of lock-in amplifiers. We show, how the relative phase of the oscillations modulate the resulting real part and phase pictures of the DySEM mapping. This can be used to obtain information about the underlying oscillatory dynamics. We apply the theory to the case of a cantilever in oscillation, driven at different flexural and torsional resonance modes. This is an extension of a recent work (Schr¨oter et al 2012 Nanotechnology 23 435501), where we reported on a general methodology to distinguish nonlinear features caused by the Imaging process from those caused by cantilever motion. A1 - Sturm, Heinz T1 - Analytical and numerical analysis of imaging mechanism of dynamic scanning electron microscopy N2 - The direct observation of small oscillating structures with the help of a scanning electron beam is a new approach to study the vibrational dynamics of cantilevers and microelectromechanical systems. In the scanning electron microscope, the conventional signal of secondary electrons (SE, dc part) is separated from the signal response of the SE detector, which is correlated to the respective excitation frequency for vibration by means of a lock-in amplifier. The dynamic response is separated either into images of amplitude and phase shift or into real and imaginary parts. Spatial resolution is limited to the diameter of the electron beam. The sensitivity limit to vibrational motion is estimated to be sub-nanometer for high integration times. Due to complex imaging mechanisms, a theoretical model was developed for the interpretation of the obtained measurements, relating cantilever shapes to interaction processes consisting of incident electron beam, electron–lever interaction, emitted electrons and detector response. Conclusions drawn from this new model are compared with numerical results based on the Euler–Bernoulli equation.
