Hierbei spielt die erhöhte Oxalsäureproduktion des Pilzes und die daraus resultierende Kupferoxalatausfällung im Holz die entscheidende Rolle. Das Kupfer wird auf diese Weise für den Pilz weitgehend unschädlich gemacht und andere Holzschutzmittelbestandteile wie z.B. Chrom- und Arsenverbindungen verlieren ihre Fixierung im Holz und werden wasserlöslich. Dies führt zu Frühausfällen von chemisch geschütztem Holz im Erdkontakt innerhalb weniger Jahre. Laboruntersuchungen haben gezeigt, dass der Holzabbau durch A. vaillantii bei hoher Wasserverfügbarkeit außerhalb des Holzes angeregt werden kann. Das hohe Feuchtigkeitsbedürfnis des Pilzes ist möglicherweise die Ursache für den Befall von Holz in bis zu 1,2 m Bodentiefe. Neben der hohen Bodenfeuchte gibt es Anhaltspunkte für weitere Parameter, die zur positiven Selektion von A. vaillantii und damit seiner stellenweise starken Ausbreitung führen. Diese sind hohe Toleranz gegenüber bereits vorhandenen niedrigen pH-Werten im Boden, das aktive Einstellen niedriger pH-Werte im Boden durch Säureabgabe und die Festlegung von Kuper als Kupferoxalat. Comparatively little work has been done to examine the effect that treated timber might have on its surrounding environment. This presentation will describe a methodology that attempts to detect any changes which might occur in the soil microflora following the introduction of timber treated with a number of chemical agents containing organic active ingredients (a.i.). It was also the purpose to isolate organisms that can break down organic a.i.. A technique was developed to determine whether the presence and nature of a timber preservative influenced the size and composition of a microbial population that colonised timber when buried in soil. Samples of treated timber were incubated in a solution eluted from soil that contained a diverse, viable microbial population. After incubation, the size and composition of the microflora both in the eluate and adhering to the timber was examined. In the process of biological detoxification organic acids produced by strains of Antrodia vaillantii and other brown rot fungi are used for the dissolution of the previously fixed inorganic compounds. These findings are the basis for applying an acid pulping process (FORMACELL) developed by Nimz and Schone (1992) at the BFH, Hamburg, to detoxify salt impregnated wood waste with a mixture of acetic and formic acid. First results achieved with wood chips from treated poles after approximately 20 years of service life show that the obtained pulp contains less than 100 ppm of Cr and Cu. The pulp properties were neither influenced by the Cr and Cu ions nor by the age of the poles. The extracted quantities of Cr and Cu remain with the lignin whereas the acids are evaporated and recycled in the pulping process. In practice, wood-specimens were vacuum-impregnated by alcoholic solutions of titanium alkoxide with concentrations in the range of 5–16 mass % (solid content in solution) and subsequently cured under different humidity conditions. Results reveal that treated wood degraded up to 5% in comparison to untreated one that deteriorated 38% and 50%, respectively against both wood-decay fungi. Even full protection (mass loss below 3%) was achieved against brown rot with titanium alkoxide solution containing solid content of around 5 mass% with a weight percentage gain (WPG) of 9 mass%. With increased concentration, fungal resistance decreased slightly which was associated with more cracks and imperfections formed in the deposited layers of titanium dioxide in the adjacent wood matrix. Thermal analysis verified that a considerable amount of precursor remained in the wood structure as un-hydrolyzed organic residues. These organics, being bioactive, had the tendency to induce similar fungicidal effects as those of conventional fungicides. The amount of organic residues is correlated with the decay resistance of the tested samples. In a prolonged decay test, mass losses of 16-wk incubated samples do not show behavior different from that of the wood samples incubated for 10 wk. This result implies that the decay protection is permanent and confirms further the fungicidal activity of titanium-alkoxide-treated wood. This study investigates the effects of weathering on WPCs and subsequent material degradation by fungi. Weathering using UV radiation, water spray and repeated frost incidents caused micro- and macro-cracks. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) demonstrated delignification of wood particles at the weathered WPC surface. Despite of increased surface area, accessibility for fungal hyphae and moisture content, weathering enhanced mass loss due to fungal decay only subtly but not significantly. These potentially enhancing effects for fungal decay are assumed to be outbalanced by delignification due to photo-oxidation and leaching of degradation products resulting in loss of nutrient sources essential for fungal growth. T1 - Environmental Risk Assessment of Treated Timber in Service - the Environment Focus Group Approach N2 - In the context of the Biocidal Products Directive (98/8/EC), and of the OECD work on wood preservatives, the Environment Focus Group (EFG), comprising 8 institutes and the European Wood Preservative Manufacturers Group, has been working on the environmental risk assessment of treated timber in service. A literature review of emissions from treated timber has revealed that very little existing data is usable for environmental risk assessment; the most relevant data are kinetic curves of emissions over time, which show clearly the non-linear emissions behaviour of treated wood over time. The EFG has suggested real exposure conditions for treated timber in the environment, and listed typical exposure scenarios. Five representative scenarios are characterised in detail, for use in the calculation of Predicted Environmental Concentrations (PECs). The existing methods to determine emissions from treated wood have been reviewed. Most existing experimental models cannot be used to predict environmental emissions. Monitoring of commodities in service has its specific constraints. Chemical analysis and ecotoxicity testing have also been reviewed and their relationship has been discussed. Principles for the design of experimental models, for the determination of emission fluxes from treated wood to the environment, have been established. One of these is Cu-HDO, containing the chelation product of copper and N-cyclohexyldiazenium dioxide (HDO). In this study, the fate of isotope-labeled (13C) and nonlabeled (12C) Cu-HDO incorporated in wood sawdust mixed with soil was investigated. HDO concentration was monitored by high-pressure liquid chromatography. The total carbon and the δ13C content of respired CO2, as well as of the soil-wood-sawdust mixture, were determined with an elemental analyzer-isotopic ratio mass spectrometer. The concentration of HDO decreased significantly after 105 days of incubation, and after 24 days the 13CO2 concentration respired from soil increased steadily to a maximum after 64 days of incubation. Phospholipid fatty acid-stable isotope probing (PFA-SIP) analysis revealed that the dominant PFAs C19:0d8,9, C18:0, C18:1ω7, C18:2ω6,9, C17:1d7,8, C16:0, and C16:1ω7 were highly enriched in their δ13C content. Moreover, RNA-SIP identified members of the phylum Acidobacteria and the genera Phenylobacterium and Comamonas that were assimilating carbon from HDO exclusively. Cu-HDO as part of a wood preservative effectively decreased fungal wood decay and overall microbial respiration from soil. In turn, a defined bacterial community was stimulated that was able to metabolize HDO completely. These substances can be used as an indicator for the presence of moulds in the indoor environment. Three different mould strains were cultivated on culture media and IMS spectra of gaseous mould metabolites were recorded using a portable mini system with a tritium source and a 5 cm drift cell. The headspace spectra are characteristic for mould species and their age. Typical gaseous components of the metabolites were identified and compared with results obtained from gas chromatography using a mass spectrometer detector. It was observed that the MVOCs formation depends on mould species and their growing stage with a maximum of MVOCs emission occurring during the first 10 days. These preliminary results show that IMS can be applied to detect MVOCs in indoor environment and indicate hidden mould growth. Pinholes remained as permanent surface damage after removing the mildew mycelium. The extent of the damage differed in dependence of the kind of the coating. By tracing the images and profiles of the coating surfaces systematically over all phases of weathering and the subsequent cleaning procedure, a connection between formation of pinholes and mildew growth could be found. Outdoor weathering tests in other regions of Florida as well as in Europe and Australia showed that pinholes caused by mildew attack could also be found in all other locations, but always to a lower extent than in South Florida. The standardised mildew tests EN ISO 846 and MIL-STD 810F for laboratory exposure failed to reproduce the formation of pinholes. Albert Grünwedel dokumentiert in seinem Buch „Kultstätten" auf S. 148 die Auffindung der sog. Malerhöhle (Höhle Nr. 17) und schreibt hierzu: „Diese alte und schöne Höhle war völlig durch eine Schlammrunse verschlossen und unsichtbar... Als sie entdeckt wurde, waren die Wände dick mit Schimmel belegt. Da zu befürchten war, daß die Bilder abfallen würden, wurde nur eine kleine Öffnung gemacht, um der Luft Zutritt zu gewähren, da auch der Aufenthalt in der Höhle infolge des Geruchs der Pilze unmöglich war. Diese Öffnung wurde allmählich erweitert und als der Schimmelbeschlag getrocknet war, wurden die Wände mit chinesischem Branntwein gewaschen. Halogen-free flame retardants can contain high amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus or sulphur, which may serve as nutrition source for wood degrading fungi and accelerate wood decay. Therefore, the material resistance of WPCs with each of four flame retardants against both fire or fungal decay was examined in comparison to WPC without flame retardant. Expandable graphite showed the best performance against fire in cone calorimetry and radiant panel testing. Two ammonium polyphosphates and a third nitrogen-containing flame retardant were not as effective. Contrary to the possibility that flame retardants might enhance fungal decay of WPC, the opposite effect occurred in case of the wood-degrading fungi Trametes versicolor and Coniophora puteana according to determination of mass loss and decrease of bending modulus of elasticity. Only the surface mould Alternaria alternata slightly increased the degradation of WPCs with nitrogen-containing flame retardants compared to WPC without flame retardant according to mass loss data and FTIR-ATR analyses. Finally, WPC including expandable graphite as flame retardant was effective against both fire and fungal decay. In a one-step process, wood was vacuum impregnated by the precursor solutions containing CuCl2. The copper (Cu) emission rates of the sol-gel-based impregnated woods were up to 70% lower than that of wood treated with pure CuCl2 solution at the same level of concentration. More improvement (80%) could be achieved in a two-step process, in which sol-gel precursors were introduced into an already CuCl2-treated wood. The refinement was attributed to several effects. In the one-step approach, Cu was embedded in the TiO2/SiO2 gels formed in the wood texture. During a two-step impregnation, gel layers that were formed in the wooden interior acted as an effective diffusion barrier. The sol-gel impregnations made wood more hydrophobic; therefore, the low amount of water that penetrated the cell wall was less efficient to leach out Cu. Für eine solche Separation der Einflussfaktoren ist insbesondere die Aufschlüsselung möglicher Wechselwirkungen der Umwelt-parameter (z.B. Mikroklima an bestrahlten Oberflächen) erforderlich. Einzelne (meist Alterungs-) Empfindlichkeiten können qualitativ nachgewiesen werden oder sogar – als Beanspruchungs-Wirkungs-Funktionen – quantifiziert werden, was einen wesentlichen Schritt in Richtung der Digitalisierung der Material¬prüfung darstellt. Insbesondere ist dann auch eine Lebensdauer-vorhersage für vorgegebene Zeitreihen der Beanspruchungs¬parameter umsetzbar. (iii) Rückwirkungen auf die Umwelt Umweltbeanspruchungen können zur Freisetzung von Schadstoffen in die Umwelt führen. Initially, the biocidal efficacy of nano metal fluorides (NMFs) against wood destroying fungi was assessed with an in-vitro agar test. The results from the test showed that agar medium containing MgF2 and CaF2 was more efficient in preventing fungal decay than stand-alone MgF2 or CaF2. These metal fluorides, in their nanoscopic form synthesized using fluorolytic sol-gel synthesis, were introduced into the sapwood of Scots pine and beech wood and then subjected to accelerated ageing by leaching (EN 84). MAS 19F NMR and X-ray micro CT images showed that metal fluorides were present in treated wood, unleached and leached. Decay resistance of Scots pine and beech wood treated with NMFs was tested against Wood destroying fungi Rhodonia placenta and Trametes versicolor in accordance with EN 113. Results revealed that mass losses were reduced to below 3% in wood treated with the combination of MgF2 and CaF2. Factors such as moisture, temperature and availability of food sources all have a significant influence on biological systems. Corrosion (Chap. 12) and wear (Chap. 13) can also be induced or enhanced in the presence of microorganisms. Section 14.1 introduces the categories between desired (biodegradation) and undesired (biodeterioration) biological effects on materials. It also introduces the role of biocides for the protection of materials. Section 14.2 describes the testing of wood as a building material especially against microorganisms and insects. Section 14.3 characterizes the test methodologies for two other groups of organic materials, namely polymers (Sect. 14.3.1) and paper and textiles (Sect. 14.3.2). These microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs) can be used as indicators of fungal growth even when such growth is concealed. In order to investigate the formation of these volatile metabolites on building materials, specimens of pine sapwood on agar media colonized by the dry-rot fungus Serpula lacrymans and a mixture of six moulds were examined. MVOCs from this fungal growth were studied over a period of up to half a year by ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) headspace analysis using a sensitive, portable IMS mini-device. The IMS headspace spectra from the growing fungal specimens obtained during this time span are differed from non-incubated wood specimens and indicate the presence of a mixture of MVOCs. The composition and amount of volatile metabolites of the fungi changed during cultivation. This was confirmed by a principal component analysis (PCA). Identification of different MVOCs in the headspace according to drift time and the mobility of ionized gaseous species in reference to GC-MS investigations were proposed. It was concluded that IMS can be used as a rapid and sensitive on-site method to indicate actively growing fungi concealed within wood. Deshalb sollte bei jeder Versuchsplanung die Frage stehen: Was ist das Problem, das man durch Biozieinsatz lösen will? Wie kann es im Laborversuch dargestellt werden? Konnte der Laborversuch zeigen, dass bei Biozideinsatz das Problem kleiner wird, beziehungsweise nicht mehr existiert? Je höher die Teststufe ist, umso mehr muss der Prüfablauf auf die Praxisbedingungen in der Gebrauchsphase des biozidhaltigen Erzeugnisses abgestimmt werden. Auf Stufe 1 werden in der Regel einzelne Wirkstoffe getestet. Ziel ist, die prinzipielle Wirksamkeit nachzuweisen, um die Ergebnisse für die Zulassung auf die Positivliste biozider Wirkstoffe der Biozidrichtlinie einzureichen. Während auf Stufe 1 bereits Normmethoden unter Einbeziehung einer relevanten Materialmatrix angewendet oder für die Fragestellung adaptiert werden können, ist dies für Stufe 2 oftmals nicht gegeben. Anstelle eines einzelnen Wirkstoffs wird oftmals ein Gemisch verschiedener Wirkstoffe und zusätzlichen Additiven, die wiederum Einfluss auf beispielsweise die Verteilbarkeit, Stabilität und Bioverfügbarkeit haben können. Due to the high consumption of these products and the potential health risk associated herewith, concerns about the safety and quality of food and feed have increased over the last decades at both governmental and consumer levels. Since it is not possible to avoid their occurrence, tremendous efforts have been performed to identify and monitor mycotoxins in food and feed to make their consumption safe. However, suitable certified reference materials (CRMs) intended for quality assurance and quality control purposes are still lacking for many mycotoxin-matrix combinations. Therefore, in the framework of a European Reference Material (ERM®) project, the first CRM for T-2 and HT-2 toxin in ground oat flakes (ERM®-BC720) was developed according to the requirements of ISO Guide 35. The whole process of ERM®-BC720 development, including sample preparation, homogeneity and stability studies and value assignment, is presented. The assignment of the certified mass fractions was based upon an in-house study using high-performance liquid chromatography isotope-dilution tandem mass spectrometry. Simultaneously, an interlaboratory comparison study involving 24 expert laboratories was conducted in order to support the in-house certification study. Industrial preservatives, also known as biocides, are therefore used to protect these and similar products from the effects of microorganisms, predominantly bacteria and yeasts. In the absence of internationally recognised standard methods for determining the resistance of polymer dispersions to microbial growth and the efficacy of biocides used in them, protocols for testing other products, e.g., paints, have been adapted, and other methods produced by manufacturing companies, test laboratories, and academic institutions have been used. Often these do not take into account the specific nature of the materials being tested, the types of organism commonly causing contamination, and the conditions that the polymer dispersions will be exposed to during manufacture, storage, and use. By conducting a series of round-robin, collaborative tests, the member organisations of the International Biodeterioration Research Group Polymer Dispersion Working Group have identified the bacteria that commonly infect polymer dispersions, defined the main parameters necessary for a standard method of test, and developed a protocol that is robust, repeatable, and reproducible. The recommended test involves three repeat inoculations of the material with a previously determined mix of seven Gram-negative bacteria and evaluation of living cells by a simple plating technique. The work reported here, carried out by nine participating laboratories, is a final statistical validation and suggests that the method is eminently suitable as a standard test method. The release of substances is based on mass-transfer processes to the material surfaces. Experimental approaches to investigate transport processes that are caused by water contact are presented. For tailoring the tests, relevant aging exposure types and release quantification methods must be combined appropriately. Several studies on the release of hazardous substances such as metals, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, flame retardants, antioxidants, and carbon nanotubes from polymers are summarized exemplarily. Der Test für den Einsatz von Konservierungsmitteln in seiner jetzigen Fassung besteht seit nahezu 20 Jah-ren und erfolgt ausschließlich an weißer Dispersionsfarbe für den Innenraum. Die hierbei ermittelten Höchstmengen für den Einsatz von Topfkonservierern werden z.Zt. auch auf andere Innenraumbau-produkte übertragen. Ziel war es zu klären, ob die Anforderungen an die Topfkonservierung bei Far-ben tatsächlich für andere Innenraumbauprodukte übernommen werden können. Die im Vorhaben durchgeführten Versuche deuten darauf hin, dass dies nicht ohne weiteres möglich ist. Nach Rückspra-che mit Vertretern aus der Industrie wurde das Keimspektrum für die Prüfung zudem um Hefe- und Schimmelpilze erweitert. Des Weiteren wurde eine künstliche Alterung eingeführt und überprüft, ob dies einen Einfluss auf den Gehalt an Isothiazolinonen hat. Die Konzentration von Isothialzolinonen wurde mittels Ultra-Hochleistungsflüssigkeitschromatographie kontrolliert und hinsichtlich einer Kor-relation mit dem Wachstum von Mikroorganismen ausgewertet. Da die in den Innenraumbauproduk-ten zugesetzten Isothiazolinone als Kontaktallergene bekannt sind, ist es ein Ziel des „Blauen Engel“-Umweltzeichens, die geringste erforderliche Menge an Konservierungsmittel in den Produkten zu ver-wenden, ohne die positive Auswirkung der Topfkonservierung zu gefährden. Daher sind die Optimie-rung der Leistungsstärke von Konservierungsmitteln und die Kontrolle der Hygiene im Herstellungs-prozess von zunehmender Bedeutung. Um Einblicke in den Herstellungsprozess von Farben zu gewin-nen, wurden im Rahmen des Vorhabens vier Farbwerke besichtigt, in denen weiße Innenraumfarben produziert werden, die mit dem Umweltzeichen „Blauer Engel“ ausgezeichnet sind. We have found that our polymer is stronger than benzalkonium chloride (BAC) against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and also readily degrades in the presence of base, while remaining stable in acidic environments. The applicant, who aims to obtain authorization to place a product onto the European market, needs to submit data to substantiate the label claims for the intended uses. Label claims are a central issue in the assessment of efficacy. The aim of this paper is to raise awareness of the recently issued “Guidance on the Biocidal Products Regulation” concerning the evaluation of efficacy of wood preservatives. This guidance document is addressed to the applicants as well as to the competent authorities of the member states of Europe in charge of assessing efficacy data, and has been in the public domain, in its latest version, since February 2017. Therefore, an inoculum will not dry, resulting in an antimicrobial surface exhibiting prolonged antimicrobial activity, as moisture is critical to activity. Liquids will dry quicker in a hospital ward, resulting in a reduced antimicrobial efficacy compared to the existing test, rendering the test results artificially favourable to the antimicrobial claim of the product. This study aimed to assess how hospital room environmental conditions can affect the drying time of an inoculum, and to use this data to inform test parameters for antimicrobial efficacy testing based on the hospital ward. The drying time of different droplet sizes, in a range of environmental conditions likely found in a hospital ward, were recorded (n = 630), and used to create a model to inform users of the experimental conditions required to provide a drying time similar to what can be expected in the hospital ward. Drying time data demonstrated significant (p < 0.05) variance when humidity, temperature, and airflow were assessed. A mathematical model was created to select environmental conditions for in vitro antimicrobial efficacy testing. Drying time in different environmental conditions demonstrates that experimental set-ups affect the amount of time an inoculum stays wet, which in turn may affect the efficacy of an antimicrobial surface. This should be an important consideration for hospitals and other potential users, whilst future tests predict efficacy in the intended end-use environment. To investigate the effect of such wood preservatives on the soil fungal and bacterial community compositions, five different vineyard and fruit-growing soil environments were evaluated using incubation studies over time. Pine sapwood specimens were impregnated with either water or different biocide treatment solutions containing a mixture of copper, triazoles, and quaternary ammonium compounds (CuTriQAC), a mixture of triazoles and quaternary ammonium compounds (TriQAC), or copper alone (Cu). Specimens were incubated in soil from each sample site for 8, 16, 24, and 32 weeks. The effects of preservative treatment on the modulus of elasticity (MOE) of the wood specimens and on the soil fungal as well as bacterial community composition at the soil-wood interface were assessed by quantitative PCR and amplicon sequencing of the fungal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and bacterial 16S rRNA gene. Specimens impregnated with CuTriQAC and Cu showed decreased MOE and reduced fungal and bacterial copy numbers over time compared to those impregnated with water and TriQAC. Fungal but not bacterial community composition was significantly affected by wood preservative treatment. The relative abundance of members of the family Trichocomaceae compared to other genera increased in the presence of the Cu and CuTriQAC treatments at three sites, suggesting these to be Cu-tolerant fungi. N2 - Materials are subject to environmental constraints that include biological, chemical and physical factors. To gain confidence about durability and long-term performance of any material, environmental resistance testing procedures have to be amended with modern simulation procedures that include biological components. In fact, any environmentally exposed surface at temperatures lower than 121 °C will be home to microbial growth, even at high salt concentrations, extreme pH, environmental pollution, low water potential, and intense irradiation – everywhere where water is liquid and available. As a consequence, complex microbial ecosystems called biofilms are self-sufficient and found on almost all solid-air-water interfaces. Obviously, environmental changes perturb biofilm development but over a number of seasons, these changes result in relatively stable microbial communities peculiar and adapted to a particular niche and material. Certain microbial settlers are indicative of, and in a real sense mark, a particular biofilm and can, thus, be considered as “reference organisms”. Characteristic reference organisms’ peculiar to specific material-inhabiting communities can be isolated, identified, characterised and used in standard test procedures as well as research into materials science (materials improvement). In this presentation classical microbiological, genetic and molecular methods for studying reference organisms and their roles in materials deterioration will be presented. Their nonvolatility prevents exposure during use or handling and are thus drastically safer than conventional alkylating agents. We discovered that thioimidazolium Iodide salts cannot release volatile compounds in the solid state, but instead only decompose when molten. Since decomposition proceeds via alkyl iodide elimination, SN2 of iodide on the thioimidazolium cation is constrained in the solid state, and instead can occur only upon melting when ions are mobile. By smart design of these alkylators, the melting point and thus the decomposition temperature of these salts can be increased from 106 to 169 °C and release negligible volatile organic compounds prior to melting. Thioimidazolium-bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TFSI) ionic liquids act as a completely nonvolatile and air-stable TFSI-based alkylating agent and can be used for high-throughput Synthesis of TFSI ionic liquids without solvent. Alkyl groups from methyl to dodecyl can be transferred to a nucleophile and the product purified by sublimation of the thione byproduct, which can then be recycled. We also found that thioimidazolium salts with a dodecyl chain are bactericidal, yet can hydrolyze in water to form benign neutral products, and thus wont accumulate in the environment. These results demonstrate that thioimidazolium salts are a designable platform for the pursuit of safer and more environmentally friendly alkylating and antiseptic agents. Benutzung geeigneter Lebendkulturen als Referenzorganismen geben der Materialprüfung und -forschung eine Möglichkeit des reproduzierbaren Experimentierens mit verschiedenen Materialien und Simulation von Bedingungen im Gebrauch. Vorteile unserer Testverfahren sind: (i) Zeitraffung und Kontrollierbarkeit der Umweltparameter; (ii) Benutzung einer naturnahen Vergesellschaftung; iii) gezielte Variationen der Prüfbedingungen im Labor. Unlike many nations who used limited sizing materials to improve the mechanical strength and to smoothen the paper surface, Iranians have used various materials for sizing process from Taimurid (15th century) to Safawid (16th century) and Qajar (19th century) periods. Further to our earlier study on the Sizing Materials used in Persian manuscripts and miniature paintings, scientific analysis was carried out to investigate their behaviour against the mould fungus Aspergillus flavus. In the first stage fourteen different sizing materials that was identified from Persian historical recipes were reconstructed. In the second stage fungicidal property of each sizing samples against Aspergillus flavus fungus were identified that will be presented in this paper. T1 - Nano metal fluorides for wood protection against fungi N2 - Wood treated with nano metal fluorides is found to resist fungal decay. Sol−gel synthesis was used to synthesize MgF2 and CaF2 nanoparticles. Electron microscopy images confirmed the localization of MgF2 and CaF2 nanoparticles in wood. Efficacy of nano metal fluoride-treated wood was tested against brown-rot fungi Coniophora puteana and Rhodonia placenta. Untreated wood specimens had higher mass losses (∼30%) compared to treated specimens, which had average mass loss of 2% against C. puteana and 14% against R. placenta, respectively. Nano metal fluorides provide a viable alternative to current wood preservatives. Ergänzend hierzu wurden Parameter wie pH-Wert und Leitfähigkeit des Wassers im Befeuchter untersucht und die mikrobiellen flüchtigen organischen Verbindungen (MVOC, microbial volatile organic compounds) in der Modellvitrine bestimmt. Die Leitfähigkeitsmessung kann als Indikator für den Verunreinigungsgrad des Wassers dienen, weil sie mit der mikrobiologischen Belastung korreliert. Weiterhin war eine mikrobiologische Belastung der Luft in der Modellvitrine auch bei relativ hoher Verunreinigung des Befeuchtungswassers nicht nachzuweisen.
