T1 - Electrochemistry of nano-scale bacterial surface protein layers on gold N2 - The mechanism of the recrystallization of nano-scale bacterial surface protein layers (S-layers) on solid substrates is of fundamental interest in the understanding and engineering of biomembranes and e.g. biosensors. In this context, the influence of the charging state of the substrate had to be clarified. Therefore, the electrochemical behaviour of the S-layers on gold electrodes has been investigated by in-situ electrochemical quartz microbalance (EQMB) measurements, scanning force microscopy (SFM) and small-spot X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (SS-XPS) of potentiostatically emersed substrates. It was shown that the negatively charged bonding sites of the S-layer units (e.g. carboxylates) can bond with positively charged Au surface atoms in the positively charged electrochemical double layer region positive of the point of zero charge (not, vert, similar-0.8 V vs. saturated mercury-mercurous sulphate electrode). Surface conditions in other potential regions decelerated the recrystallization and fixation of S-layers. Time-resolved in-situ and ex-situ measurements demonstrated that two-dimensional S-layer crystal formation on gold electrodes can occur within few minutes in contrast to hours common in self-assembled monolayer (SAM) generation. These results proved that the recrystallization and fixation of 2D-crystalline S-layers on an electronic conductor can be influenced and controlled by direct electrochemical manipulation. Coating characterization was performed by cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy, glancing-angle X-ray diffraction and instrumental indentation testing. Individual a-titanium and titanium nitride layers were always observed, although for the finer microstructures, the TiN layers were thicker than the Ti layers by a factor three. The plastic hardness of the films increased steadily with decreasing layer spacing, following a Hall–Petch relationship. Finally, a hardness value of 42 GPa was reached, which is similar to that of a thick TiN monolayer, prepared under the same coating conditions. Fabry-Perot layer stacks as information carriers in combination with imaging ellipsometry as optical read-out system provide all-in-one anti-counterfeiting capability that may establish the new security level 'encoded forensic'. Different layer designs are described with regard to all three security levels: public features (e.g. color and tilt effect) perceptible by the human eye, hidden features (e.g. spectroscopic response in the UV or IR), and forensic features (ellipsometric quantities Ψ and Δ as a function of wavelength λ and angle of incidence AOI). Physically uncloneable functions (PUF) could be realized as a result of a multi-material and a multi-parameter deposition approach as well as by means of specific design features of the Fabry-Perot layer stack. Hence, they are not subject to any reverse engineering strategies. The test apparatus is most likely the only one in Europe. The test chamber allows investigations with pure oxygen or oxygen mixtures at pressures up to 500 bar and at temperatures up to 400°C at static or flowing gas conditions. The ignition device consists of an electrical ignition wire and a promoter. IR-sensors, distributed over the whole length of the rod, measure and record the burning temperature and allow measurement of the burn rate. A video system records the experiment for visual characterization of the burning behavior. BAM test results are compared with published data. Results on investigations with coated rods are presented. Ceramic coatings seem to be a solution for the use of certain less compatible metallic materials at higher oxygen pressures. The standard test method ASTM G 124 allows a ranking of metallic materials for use at high pressure oxygen. However, the transfer of those test results to valves and fittings in real-life situations is rather complex. The “metallic disk ignition test,” developed at BAM, is more practice oriented and uses metallic disks of different thicknesses of the investigated material. A commonly used nonmetallic sealing ring is placed in front of this disk and serves as an igniter. This test array is then exposed to high pressure gaseous oxygen impacts in a standardized pneumatic impact tester according to DIN EN 1797 [3]. A1 - Unger, Wolfgang T1 - Determination of wettability of surface-modified hot-embossed polycarbonate wafers used in microfluidic device fabrication via XPS and ToF-SIMS N2 - The wettability of the surfaces inside the microchannels of a microfluidic device is an important property considering a liquid flows through them. Contact angle measurements usually applied to test the wettability of surfaces cannot be used for an analysis of microchannel walls within microfluidic devices. A workaround is the use of surface analytical methods, which are able to reach points of interest in microchannels and may provide information on the surface chemistry established there. In calibrating these methods by using flat polymer wafers, where the contact angle can be measured as usual, data measured in real microchannels can be evaluated in terms of wetting properties. Reference wafers of bisphenol-A polycarbonate, a polymeric material that is often used in fluidic microdevice fabrication, were treated under different oxygen plasma conditions. The modified surfaces were characterized by using XPS, time of flight (ToF)-SIMS and atomic force microscope (AFM). Surface chemistry and surface topography have been correlated with contact angle measurements. In addition, effects of ageing or rinsing after plasma treatment have also been investigated. Eine verbesserte Reinigbarkeit bedeutet für die produzierende Industrie eine Steigerung der Effizienz der Produktionsanlage. Besonders in der heutigen medienintensiven Zeit kommt ein "Lebensmittelskandal" durch ein unsicheres Produkt einem finanziellen Desaster und immensem Imageverlust gleich. Aus diesem Grund ist die Reinigbarkeit der produktberührenden Oberflächen stets ein wichtiges Kriterium für die Werkstoffauswahl. Basierend auf den Theorien zu Schmutzhaftung und -entfernung wurde im Rahmen dieser Arbeit überprüft, ob und wie die theoretisch relevanten Parameter auch in den Experimenten den Reinigungserfolg beeinflussen. Der Schwerpunkt wurde auf die Einflussgrößen des Werkstoffes gelegt, um herauszufinden, wie stark eine Oberfläche selbst zu ihrer Reinigbarkeit beitragen kann (self-cleaning). In den durchgeführten Versuchen hat sich gezeigt, dass die Oberflächenrauheit lediglich bei der Reinigung von kohäsiven Schmutzfilmen eine entscheidende Rolle gespielt hat. Hingegen ist ihr Einfluss auf das Reinigungsergebnis von sich auflösenden Schmutzfilmen und Partikeln nur begrenzt bis gar nicht zur Geltung gekommen. Das Oberflächenmaterial hatte keinen starken, aber dennoch signifikanten Einfluss auf die Reinigbarkeit der untersuchten Oberflächen. Dass die Reinigbarkeit einer Oberfläche keine Materialkonstante sein kann, wurde unter Verwendung spezieller Oberflächen mit definiert geätzten Rauheitsstrukturen nachgewiesen. Der Reinigungserfolg hängt immer auch von der Verunreinigungsart ab, was sich auch in vergleichbaren Versuchen der Einzelpartikelablösung mittels AFM in dem Einfluss der Elastizität bzw. Plastizität der Partikeln geäußert hat. Praxistaugliche Empfehlungen gehören mit zu den wichtigsten Zielen dieser Arbeit gewesen. Mit Fokus auf die Oberflächenparameter und auf Basis der durchgeführten Untersuchungen wurde zur Optimierung der Reinigung produktberührender Oberflächen für bekannte Kontaminationen eine Checkliste als Orientierungshilfe erarbeitet. Ist die Verunreinigungsart dennoch unbekannt, so sollte der "Grenzwert" von Ra = 1 µm unterschritten werden, um bei Vorhandensein filmartiger Verschmutzungen keine negativen Auswirkungen auf die Reinigbarkeit zu haben. Die Notwendigkeit nach hochpolierten Oberflächen (Ra < 0,3 µm) aus Reinigbarkeitsgründen kann aufgrund der Untersuchungen nicht nachvollzogen werden. Das Ziel des Vorhabens wurde erreicht. For this purpose, different magnetostrictive coated fiber optic sensors were developed and various experiments were performed to verify their mode of Operation and to determine the respective reproducibility. The measuring principle is illustrated by obtained experimental results, which showed a change in wavelength from 1 pm at a magnetic field strength change of 0.25 mT. Stable and highly aromatic a-C:H were obtained containing significant inclusions of poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV). PPV confers universal optoelectronic properties to the synthesized material. That is a-C:H with tailor-made refractive index are capable of becoming absorption-free in visible (red)-near infrared wavelength range. Production of large aromatic hydrocarbon including phenyl clusters and/or particles is attributed to enhanced coagulation of elemental plasma species under collisional plasma conditions. T1 - Surface analytical characterization of micro-fluidic devices hot embossed in polymer wafers: Surface chemistry and wettability N2 - Recently, time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) instrumentation has been used to address areas of interest within micro-fluidic devices providing full access to the surface chemistry established at the bottom of micro-channels therein. After careful calibration, information on surface chemistry as obtained by ToF-SIMS or XPS can be interpreted in terms of wettability expressed as contact angles which are then characteristic for the inner walls of micro-channels. Standard contact angle measurement is not applicable in micro-channels. The approach has been demonstrated to be successful with two different micro-fluidic devices hot embossed into high-end quality poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) or Polycarbonate wafers. A pre-selected surface chemistry at micro-channel walls can be established by plasma technologies but ageing and rinsing effects have to be under control. A combination of ToF-SIMS, XPS and contact angle measurement techniques has been demonstrated to provide the required information. Finally, it is shown by ToF-SIMS and XPS analysis that in the production of micro-fluidic parts during practical processing using hot embossing technologies, material originating from cover foils will reside on the polymer wafer's surface. Moreover, residues of releasing agents as silicone oil used during processing can be detected by ToF-SIMS. Both cover foil residues and silicones are issues of trouble shooting in micro-fluidics because they will change contact angles efficiently. Based on a smart multilayer jacket around the fibre over the physical length of the FBG, magnetic fields generated by rotating machine parts, power generators or power cable can be easily detected, analysed and evaluated. Consequently, this innovative, on-line and non-contact inspection method results in an increase in quality and reliability of high-performing machine parts, devices and cables. The basic physical principle is based on a magnetostrictive multilayer system that strains the high-resolution FBG element in presence of magnetic fields. Subsequently, a fixed relationship between induced magnetic field and wavelength change of the FBG element describes the characteristic sensitivity curve. Ein Großteil der Fertigungskosten in der Mikro- und Nanotechnik wird durch Reinräume und die Umsetzung ausgeklügelter Reinigungsstrategien zur Vermeidung von Restverschmutzungen und partikulären Belegungen verursacht, da diese unweigerlich zum Bauteilversagen führen. Die Validierung des Reinigungszustandes ist somit von zentraler Bedeutung für die Schichtqualität und Produktfunktionalität. Dies gilt in Abhängigkeit von der Applikation und den vertikalen Schicht- bzw. lateralen Strukturdimensionen sowohl für Fertigungsprozesse im Reinraum als auch für solche in robuster Umgebung. In der Praxis kommt es häufig vor, dass man mikroskopisch scheinbar saubere Substrate erst durch die Beschichtung „enttarnt" und dann Defekte oft mit bloßem Auge sichtbar werden. This concept is based on a magnetostrictive metallic layer directly coated on the fibre cladding over the grating segment of the FBG sensor, so that an on-demand external magnetic field in a millitesla scale can produce a controllable artificial strain as an indication signal for the remote optical interrogator. The relationship between the pre-defined magnetic field and its induced Bragg wavelength shift characterizes this validation concept. Any deviation of the local bonding state of the interfaces from the initial or/and any change of shear strain transferring mechanism from composite matrix to the optical fibre core will result in alterations in this sensitive relationship, and thus triggers an immediate alert for a further inspection. The finite element method is used to simulate the strain of this configuration as result of different values of the magnetic field in order to optimize the geometrical sensor parameters. In Kompositwerkstoffe eingebettete faseroptische Sensoren können Bauteile bezüglich ihrer mechanischen Integrität überwachen und früh-zeitig Informationen über Materialveränderungen gewinnen. Um die Zuverlässigkeit eines solchen Sensors zu gewährleisten, ist es wichtig, die korrekte Funktion des Sensors im Verbund mit der Werkstoff-Matrix on-line und in-situ sicherzu-stellen. Im Rahmen des DFG-Projekts FAMOS² (FAser-basierter Magneto-Optischer SchichtSensor) wurde ein selbstdiagnosefähiger Schichtsensor entwickelt, der mit Hilfe von magnetostriktiven Aktorschichten aus Nickel bzw. Eisen-Nickel validiert werden kann. Der FAMOS²-Schichtsensor wird durch ein PVD (physical vapour deposition)/ECD (electro-chemical deposition) Hybridschichtsystem realisiert, das auf dem Fasermantel im Bereich des FBG haftfest, homogen und langzeitfunktional abzuscheiden ist. Dabei wird in einem ersten Schritt ein etwa 100 Nanometer dünnes PVD-Schichtsystem aus Chrom und Kupfer als Haftvermittler auf der Glasfaser bzw. als leitfähige Startschicht für den nachfolgenden ECD-Prozess abgeschieden. Um eine rotationssymmetrische Schich-tabscheidung zu gewährleisten, erfolgt während der PVD-Beschichtung eine Rotation der Glasfasern. In einem zweiten Schritt wird dann unter Verwendung eines klassischen Watts-Elektrolyten in einer speziell entwickelten ebenfalls rotationssymmetrisch aufgebau-ten ECD-Durchströmungszelle dann die etwa 30 Mikrometer dicke, magnetostriktive Ak-torschicht auf dem PVD-Schichtsystem abgeschieden, im Vergleich sowohl reine Nickel-Schichten als auch Nickel-Eisen-Schichten. Ein äußeres Magnetfeld dehnt die magnetostriktive Aktorschicht und damit auch die Faser reversibel. Diese Dehnung führt zu einer Verschiebung der Bragg-Wellenlänge, welche direkt mit der Stärke eines zu messenden oder zu Validierungszwecken vorgegebenen Magnetfeldes korreliert. Here, we report a novel approach to analyze the optical and electrical properties of highly active oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts via spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE). Using a series of differently calcined, mesoporous, templated iridium oxide films as an example, we assess the film thickness, porosity, electrical resistivity, electron concentration, electron mobility, and interband and intraband transition energies by modeling of the optical spectra. Independently performed analyses using scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, ellipsometric porosimetry, X-ray reflectometry, and absorption spectroscopy indicate a high accuracy of the deduced material properties. A comparison of the derived analytical data from SE, resonant photoemission spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy with activity measurements of the OER suggests that the intrinsic activity of iridium oxides scales with a shift of the Ir 5d t2g sub-level and an increase of p−d interband transition energies caused by a transition of μ1-OH to μ3-O species. Besides the establishment of reliable synthesis procedures, comprehensive particle characterization is essential for batch-to-batch reproducibility and objective performance assessment across architectures, protocols, and laboratories. Particle characterization with respect to size, size distribution, shell thickness and texture, surface area and roughness or materials composition is commonly conducted with different analytical methods, often on different samples. Our approach uses a dual-mode TSEM/SEM set-up with an EDX detector to obtain a complementary data set with sufficient statistical confidence of one and the same sample on a single instrument. Our protocol reveals information about size, size distribution and shell thickness of the various particles employed from overview images, while an increased field of view (FOV) and high-resolution EDX analysis yields detailed information on shell texture and elemental composition. An image analysis tool was developed to derive and quantify the profile roughness of CS particles from individual beads. Comparison with surface roughness data from AFM showed a similar trend in roughness across the series of particles. Reliable classification into smooth and rough is proposed and roughness changes within different particle batches were tracked systematically. The FBG strain sensor was jacketed with a magnetostrictive layer based on iron-nickel which, when excited by a specific magnetic field, adds an artificial strain to the sensor. The fixed relationship between magnetic induction and wavelength shift of the FBG strain sensor characterizes the bond strength and adhesion between the sensor and the surrounding structure. These structures exhibit sub-100 nm spatial periods – far below the optical diffraction limit. The resulting surface functionalities are usually enabled by both, topographic and chemical alterations of the nanostructured surfaces. For exploring these effects, multi-method characterizations were performed here for HSFL processed on Ti–6Al–4V alloy upon irradiation with near-infrared ps-laser pulses (1030 nm, ≈1 ps pulse duration, 1–400 kHz) under different laser scan processing conditions, i.e., by systematically varying the pulse repetition frequency and the number of laser irradiation passes. The sample characterization involved morphological and topographical investigations by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), tactile stylus profilometry, as well as near-surface chemical analyses hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) and depth-profiling time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS). This provides a quantification of the laser ablation depth, the geometrical HSFL characteristics and enables new insights into the depth extent and the nature of the non-ablative laser-induced near-surface oxidation accompanying these nanostructures. The crystalline structure of titanium oxide particles was investigated byXRD(two instruments operated in different geometries) and HR-TEM. Concentration of generated titanium oxide NPs in liquid was analysed by ICP-MS. A mix of crystalline (mainly anatase), partly crystalline and amorphous spherical titanium oxide NPs can be reported having a mean size between 10 and 20 nm, which is rather independent of the laser ablation (LA) duration. A second component consisting of irregularly shaped, but crystalline titanium oxide nanostructures is co-generated in the LA water, with more pronounced occurrence at longer LA times. The provenance of this component is assigned to those spherical particles generated in suspension and passing through the converging laser beam, being hence subject to secondary irradiation effects, e. g. fragmentation. The laser processing (i) was carried out by a Ti:sapphire laser (pulse duration 30 fs, central wavelength 790 nm, pulse repetition rate 1 kHz) in a regime of generating laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS). The experimental conditions (laser fluence, spatial spot overlap) were optimized in a sample-scanning setup for the processing of several square-millimeters large surface areas covered homogeneously by these nanostructures. The differently oxidized titanium surfaces were characterized by optical microscopy, micro Raman spectroscopy, variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry, and instrumented indentation testing. The tribological performance was characterized in the regime of mixed friction by reciprocating sliding tests against a sphere of hardened steel in fully formulated engine oil as lubricant. Concentration of generated titanium oxide NPs in liquid was analysed by ICP-MS. A mix of crystalline (mainly anatase), partly crystalline and amorphous spherical titanium oxide NPs can be reported having a mean size between 10 and 20 nm, which is rather independent of the laser ablation (LA) duration. A second component consisting of irregularly shaped, but crystalline titanium oxide nanostructures is co-generated in the LA water, with more pronounced occurrence at longer LA times. The provenance of this component is assigned to those spherical particles generated in suspension and passing through the converging laser beam, being hence subject to secondary irradiation effects, e. g. fragmentation.
