The blend was activated with water and cured at 70 °C. The degree of reaction and strength were determined after 1, 3, and 7 days. The reaction products were analyzed by XRD and SEM/EDX. Until the third day of curing the degree of reaction of the residue reached 51 % and the strength was 8.9 MPa. The reaction product was identified as geopolymer containing zeolite A. Thus, the results confirmed that the residue may be used in the production of geopolymers. However, after 3 days of curing no further progress of reaction was observed and the strength slightly decreased, which was attributed to changes in the structure of the geopolymeric gel. It was further observed that even harsh vacuum drying left some water (presumably zeolitic water and surface hydroxyl groups) in the geopolymer. Bei einer Mischungsoptimierung muss im Einzelfall immer entschieden werden, welcher der gewünschten Eigenschaften die höchste Priorität zukommt. Anhand von Parameterstudien wird im vorliegenden Artikel verdeutlicht, wie es für bestimmte Anwendungen sinnvoll sein kann, die Verschlechterung einzelner Eigenschaften zu akzeptieren, wenn dadurch eine für den speziellen Einsatzfall essenzielle Eigenschaft verbessert werden kann. Die komplexen Wechselwirkungen der einzelnen Bestandteile fuhren dazu, dass auch scheinbar widersprüchliche Kombinationen von Zusatzmitteln im Einzelfall erforderlich werden können. Zur Anpassung der meisten Mörteleigenschaften gibt es verschiedene Möglichkeiten der Zielerreichung mit jeweils unterschiedlichen Nebeneffekten. (DAfStb). Hierüber wird in dem nachfolgenden Beitrag berichtet, um der Fachwelt frühzeitig darzustellen, in welche Richtung die Fortschreibung des Regelwerkes geplant ist. Die geplante neue Richtlinie wird nach derzeitigem Beratungsstand eine deutliche inhaltliche Erweiterung erfahren. Daher wird sie in 'Richtlinie für die Instandhaltung von Betonbauteilen' (Instandhaltungsrichtlinie) umbenannt und wird Festlegungen zu der grundsätzlichen Vorgehensweise bei der Instandhaltung unter Berücksichtigung der Komponenten Wartung, Inspektion, Instandsetzung und Verbesserung in Anlehnung an DIN 31051 enthalten. Da diese umfassenderen Aufgaben deutlich präziser beschrieben werden, konkretisieren sich auch die Anforderungen an die erforderliche Qualifikation des sachkundigen Planers, der zukünftig verstärkt die 'Restnutzungsdauer' bei seiner Planung beachten und in entsprechende Maßnahmen umsetzen muss. Mit den Ergänzungen und Änderungen wird die Richtlinie an die aktuellen Entwicklungen und Regelungen im Betonbau angepasst. Gleichzeitig gewinnt die Planungsleistung erheblich an Bedeutung. Für Instandsetzungsprodukte gemäß DIN EN 1504 werden, die Beseitigung derzeit noch enthaltener Unklarheiten und technischer Defizite auf europäischer Ebene vorausgesetzt, Verwendbarkeitsmöglichkeiten aufgezeigt. Die Ausführung von Instandhaltungsmaßnahmen wird durch die Einführung von Überwachungsklassen mit zugehörigen Anforderungen an die durchzuführenden Prüfungen spezifiziert und damit konkretisiert. The complexity and required computation time are additionally increased when simulating casting of heavily reinforced sections, where each single reinforcement bar has to be modeled. In order to improve the computation speed and to get closer to a practical tool for simulation of casting processes, an innovative approach to model reinforced sections is proposed here. The basic idea of this approach is to treat the reinforcement zone as a porous medium in which a concrete is propagating. In the present paper, the numerical implementation of this concept is described. A methodology allowing for the computation of the equivalent permeability of the steel bars network is suggested. Finally, this numerical technique efficiency is evaluated by a comparison with experimental results of model fluids casting in model formworks. The results showed the WSA to consist of calcite, free lime, gehlenite, tricalcium aluminate, belite, talc, quartz and probably a glassy phase. The principle reaction product was monocarboaluminate (CO3–AFm) for the water- as well as for the alkali-activated WSA. Formation of monocarboaluminate and strength gain was more rapid for the alkali-activated WSA until 1 day of curing. However, afterwards reactions proceeded much slower when alkali solutions were used, leading to an about twice as high compressive strength for water-activated WSA mortars after 28 days of curing. The observed behavior is tentatively ascribed to a less uniform microstructure of the alkali-activated WSA. Significant differences between NaOH- and the KOH-activated WSA were not observed. Für den Einsatz in explosionsgefährdeten Bereichen werden oft Werkzeuge aus speziellen Nichteisen-Metalllegierungen (NE-Metall) verwendet. Für diese sogenannten funkenarmen Werkstoffe und deren mögliche Schlagpartner gibt es bisher keine umfassenden Untersuchungen mit Aussagen zur Zündwahrscheinlichkeit. Die TRGS 723, Abschn. 5.15, fordert den Nachweis der Funkenfreiheit der verwendeten Werkstoffpaarung. Jedoch sind Werkzeuge keine Geräte oder Schutzsysteme im Sinne der Richtlinie 2014/34/EU. Deshalb ist es nicht möglich, Werkzeuge in Übereinstimmung mit dieser Richtlinie zu zertifizieren. Der Nachweis der Erfüllung dieser Anforderungen ist durch Zertifizierungen im sogenannten "gesetzlich nicht geregelten" Bereich möglich. Die BAM bietet diese Zertifizierung für "Funkenarme Werkzeuge" im Rahmen ihres Zertifizierungsprogrammes an. Die bisherigen Ergebnisse der hier vorgestellten Untersuchung haben gezeigt, dass es keine funkenfreien, metallischen Werkzeuge (non-sparking Tools) gibt. Entscheidend ist im Hinblick auf die TRGS 723, ob zündfähige Funken entstehen oder nicht. Es ist immer die Frage, worauf die Werkzeuge im praktischen Anwendungsfall schlagen oder fallen gelassen werden können, d.h. aus welchem Material der mögliche Schlagpartner besteht. Dies können metallische Schlagpartner, aber auch Betonoberflächen sein. Unterschiedliche Kombinationen von Werkstoffen ergeben bei Schlagbeanspruchung im explosionsgefährdeten Bereich jeweils unterschiedliche Zündwahrscheinlichkeiten. Unfortunately, the thermal properties of some components complicate the evaluation of TG results. Various hydrate phases, like ettringite (AFt), C-S-H and AFm decompose almost simultaneously in the temperature range up to 200 °C. Additionally, physical bound water is released in the same temperature range. In the temperature range between 450 °C and 600 °C the decomposition of calcium hydroxide and amorphous or weakly bound carbonates takes place simultaneously. Carbonates, like calcite, from limestone powder or other additives may be already contained in the noncarbonated sample material. For this research an attempt was made to minimise the influence of these effects. Therefore, differential curves from DTG-results of non-carbonated areas and areas with various states of carbonation of the same sample material were calculated and evaluated. Concretes based on three different types of cement were produced and stored under accelerated carbonation conditions (1 % CO2 in air). The required sample material was obtained by cutting slices from various depth of previously CO2-treated specimen and subsequent grinding. During the sample preparation, a special attention was paid that no additional carbonation processes took place. As reference method for the determination of the carbonation depth the sprayed application of phenolphthalein solution was carried out. Microscopic analysis where examined to confirm the assumptions made previously. Furthermore, the observed effect of encapsulation of calcium hydroxide by carbonates caused by the accelerated carbonation conditions was examined more closely. However, they often suffer from a low degree of reaction, a high amount of crystalline byproducts, and consequently low strength. In this study, one-part geopolymers were produced from rice husk ash (RHA) and sodium aluminate, and investigated by XRD, ATR-FTIR, SEM and compressive strength testing. The compressive strength of the material was 30 MPa, i.e. significantly higher than for comparable one-part geopolymers. This is attributed to an almost complete reaction of the RHA and the absence of crystalline byproducts (zeolites) in the hardened geopolymer. The specimens weresynthesized from two different silica sources, sodium aluminate and water. The phase content as well asthe compressive strength of the cured composites varied depending on the starting mix-design and thesilica feedstock. Besides geopolymeric gel, A-type zeolites and hydrosodalites were the major reactionproducts. One of the silica feedstocks yielded significantly higher compressive strength (19 MPa), whilethe other one appears to cause less variation in phase content. Strength testing indicated an improvementon heating up to 200–400 °C (28 MPa) followed by a moderate decrease up to 700 °C. Above 700 °C the sys-tems underwent new phase formation and shrinkage (volume decrease) deformations. After exposureat 1000 °C the different mixes consisted of a mix of several stuffed silica phases, almost pure hexago-nal nepheline or amorphous phase. Corresponding pastes were characterized by XRD, SEM, chemical analysis, 29Si MAS NMR and 1H-29Si CPMAS NMR after water storage and after acid exposure. The mortars exhibited a high resistance against sulfuric acid attack, with the best ones conforming to the requirements of DIN 19573:2016-03. The analytical results showed that this was due to precipitation of silica gel at the acid-mortar interface, which formed a mechanically stable layer that protected the subjacent mortar and thus inhibited further degradation. In the present work, two brick clays, a low-grade kaolinitic clay, and a mixed clay composed of 50% brick clay and 50% low-grade kaolinitic clay were studied regarding transformations on calcination, and strength and durability performance as well as pore structure of mortars made with the blended cements. All calcined clays exhibited pozzolanic reactivity, with the performance of the brick clays inferior to the low-grade kaolinitic clay. However, the mixed clay performed very similar to the low-grade kaolinitic clay, which points to a viable option for optimal use of brick clays in cementitious systems. The carbonation resistance of the blended cement mortars was generally worse than that of the plain Portland cement mortar, as expected, but the former exhibited a significantly improved chloride penetration resistance. Here, we describe a new additive manufacturing process for alkali-activated materials that is based on selective laser-heating of lithium aluminate/microsilica slurries. The new process-material combination allows to manufacture elements with complex geometries at high building rates and high accuracy. The process is versatile and transferrable to structures of sizes differing by orders of magnitude. The mechanical strength of the obtained materials was in the range of values reported for conventional metakaolin-based geopolymers, and superior to what has been hitherto reported for alkali-activated materials produced by additive manufacturing. This mechanical performance was obtained despite the fact that the degree of reaction of the lithium aluminate and the microsilica was low, suggesting that significant reactions took place only at the surface of the microsilica particles. These indicator solutions are commercially available and are not suspected to be carcinogenic. However, while extensive data is available about kaolinitic clays in this context, other clays such as illitic clays appear to be under-studied. Therefore, in the present study, two illitic clays were compared to two low-grade kaolinitic clays in terms of transformations in the calcination temperature range 650–900 °C, and performance of the calcined clays in blended cement pastes as measured by strength evolution, heat release, hydrated phase formation and portlandite consumption. The illitic clays required a higher calcination temperature for complete dehydroxylation of their illite than what is necessary for dehydroxylation of kaolinite. These higher calcination temperatures also led to particle sintering, significantly decreasing the specific surface area of the illitic clays, particularly for the clay with the higher Fe2O3 content. Nevertheless, while the kaolinitic clays generally exhibited the best performance as SCM, the illitic clay with lower Fe2O3 content performed similar to the kaolinitic clays when calcined at optimum temperature and applied at a moderate substitution rate. These findings demonstrate that several different clays have the potential to be used as SCM and indicate possible routes to identify suitable deposits for this purpose. Being located in remote offshore conditions, these connections can experience considerable adverse loading during their lifetimes. Degradation was reported inside similar connections, which were installed in the last three decades. Grouting in the offshore sites may often be proven difficult, which eventually leads to reduced load-bearing capacity of connections in the long run. Thus, repair and rehabilitation of such connections should be planned ahead to minimize operational delays and costs. In this study, scaled grouted connections were manufactured using a novel mould, whose integrity were monitored using digital image correlation (DIC). The connections were loaded under static load to visualize the main failure pattern using distributed fibre optic sensors and acoustic emission (AE) analysis. Grouted connections were then repaired using a cementitious injectable grout. The effectiveness of the grout injection was monitored using dye penetration technique. Finally, specimens are reloaded to identify the potential of such repair for grouted connections. However, concretes based on blended cements or magnesium oxychloride cements, which are commonly considered for this application, can deteriorate severely due to a significant heat of hydration and associated deformation and cracking. Alkali-activated materials (AAMs) offer a potential solution to this problem because of their low heat release during hardening. To explore their suitability for the construction of sealing structures in evaporite rock, various AAMs with salt aggregate were studied regarding fresh properties, heat release, mechanical properties and microstructure. The heat of reaction of the AAMs was up to 55% lower than that of a blended cement designed for sealing structures, indicating significant benefits for the intended application. Other relevant properties such as mechanical strength and permeability depended strongly on the mix-design of the AAMs and curing conditions. Zurzeit werden Messungen der Rautiefe mittels volumetrischer Verfahren (Sandflächenverfahren) durchgeführt. Diese bereits seit mehreren Jahrzehnten angewandten Verfahren sind jedoch auf horizontale bzw. wenig geneigte und trockene Oberflächen beschränkt. Darüber hinaus hängen die erzielten Ergebnisse sehr stark von der angewandten Prüfvorschrift, den darin vorgeschriebenen Prüfmitteln und Geräten und dem jeweiligen Anwender ab. Als Alternative zu den volumetrischen Verfahren wurde an der Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) ein automatisiertes, laserbasiertes Messverfahren entwickelt, mit dem Rautiefen von Bauteiloberflächen in Anlehnung an bereits standardisierte Verfahren bestimmt werden können. N2 - The measurement of surface roughness of building elements is an important task in civil engineering, particularly in the field of concrete repair, in road construction and in the production of precast concrete elements. At present, the surface roughness is generally determined by the so called sand-patch-test (volumetric method). This method which is used since several decades is only applicable on horizontal or only slightly sloped and dry surfaces. In addition, the results strongly depend on the utilised standards, the prescribed test equipment and the executing person. Therefore, a laser-based device for the determination of surface roughness has been developed at Bundesanstalt fur Materialforschung und -pru-fung (BAM). This contribution deals first with the different modifications of the sand-patch-test and other conventional methods, and describes the underlying formulae and the limitations of the methods. Darüber hinaus wird gezeigt, wie sich unterschiedliche Fließmittelmodifikationen in bestimmten Temperaturbereichen verhalten. Anhand des Wasser-Feststoff-Verhältnisses und des Adsorptionsverhaltens von Fließmitteln werden die maßgeblichen Prozesse erläutert und Möglichkeiten für die Entwicklung robuster Mischungen für individuelle Temperaturbereiche aufgeführt.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Regarding the temperature dependent performance, self-compacting concrete (SCC) distinguishes from normal concrete, since its rheology does not only depend upon the hydration itself but supplementary upon the adsorption of superplasticizers, which is affected by the time and the hydration progress. Based on rheometric concrete investigations with different SCC mixture compositions and varied anionic charge densities of the superplasticizers, it is shown that SCC, which is rich in powder components, shows robust performance at low temperatures, while compositions with lower powder contents are favourable at high temperatures. Furthermore, the performance of different superplasticizer modifications at different temperature ranges is demonstrated. The relevant processes are explained by means of the water to powder ratio as well as the adsorption behaviour of superplasticizers, and options for the development of robust mixture compositions for individual temperature ranges are itemised. Grouts for repair applications typically require high-performance properties such as rapid strength development and superior shrinkage characteristics. Sometimes industrial by-products referred as supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) are used with neat cement due to their capabilities to provide binding properties at delayed stage. Micro silica, fly ash and metakaolin are such SCMs, those can modify and improve properties of cement products. This study aims at investigating long-term mass loss and linear shrinkage along with long-term compressive and flexural strength for grouts produced from ultrafine cement and SCMs. A series of mixtures were formulated to observe the effect of SCMs on these grout properties. Properties were determined after 365 days of curing at 23oC and 55% relative humidity. The effect of SCMs on the properties are characterised by statistical models. Response surfaces were constructed to quantify these properties in relation to SCMs replacement. The results suggested that shrinkage was reduced by metakaolin, while micro silica and fly ash had positive effects on compressive and flexural strength, respectively. Typically, cellulose ethers, sphingan gums, guar gum or starch ethers are applied. Depending upon their chemistry, molecular architecture, and adsorption tendency, polysaccharides interact differently with the entire cementitious system. Some stabilising agents like diutan gum mainly affect the cementitious paste; other stabilising agents like starch tend to interact with the sand fraction and even with the coarse aggregates. Cellulose and guar gum shows more diverse performances. Typically stabilising admixtures like polysaccharides are used, when sophisticated rheological properties are adjusted. Therefore, polysaccharides are often used in combination with superplasticisers, which are added to reduce the yield stress of concrete. This can cause interactions, particularly when the stabilising Agent shows a strong tendency to adsorb on particle surfaces. Adsorptive stabilising agents may reduce the amount of adsorbed superplasticisers, thus affecting both viscosity and yield stress, while non-adsorptive stabilising agents mainly affect the plastic viscosity independently of the superplasticiser. Due to the strong influence of superplasticisers on the yield stress, influences of the stabilising agent on the yield stress retreat into the background, so that their major effect is an increase of the plastic viscosity. The paper provides a comprehensive overview of how different polysaccharide superplasticisers affect cementitious flowable systems and points out the challenges of the combined use of polysaccharides and superplasticisers. So called control chart systems will be approved supplementary to the existing methods. Any control chart can be used as long as the system can grant an average outgoing quality limit (AOQL) of 5 %. The informative appendix of the standard presents two fundamental control chart methods, the so called Shewhart method and the CUSUM method (cumulative sum), both of which fulfill the required AOQL. Control card systems are actually tools for process control. They can effectively help to optimise production processes technically, economically, and ecologically. However, control charts are much more complex to use than the methods known from the recently applied standard. This paper presents these new methods and their characteristics using examples. Structural grouting is a widely used remediation technique for concrete components, trenches, mine subsidence, dam joints, restoration of masonry structures, and geological stabilizations. A structural grout system should be injectable in narrow spaces and hence include ingredients with finer particles. Ultrafine cements are ideal for these type of demanding grouts due to their superior properties compared to that of the less expensive, but coarser ordinary Portland cement (OPC). Supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) are often used to replace OPC clinker based binder in order to modify certain properties and to reduce costs. The most commonly used SCMs are fly ash (FA), and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS). For various special applications microsilica (MS), and metakaolin (MK) are also used. Identifying the optimum replacement contents of OPC by SCMs are a challenge during the design of such grouts. The aim of this experimental study is to investigate the effect of the selected SCMs (FA, MS and MK) on the slump flow, time of efflux, viscosity, shrinkage, and compressive and flexural strength of ultrafine cement based grouts with constant water-binder ratio and superplasticizer content. The test program was formulated using Box-Behnken design principles. Maximum percentages of replacement with ultrafine cement was 6% by volume of cement for MS and 16% for FA, and MK. The results suggest that most investigated grouts have the potential to be used for structural applications. The appropriate quadratic models are then formulated through statistical tools and presented as response surfaces. The trends indicate that fly ash improves the rheological properties, whereas microsilica and metakaolin positively affect shrinkage and mechanical properties to some extent. Based on the influence of SCMs and priorities among the properties, Decision Matrix Analysis (DMA) is carried out to select the most suitable ones among the SCMs. The analysis suggests that microsilica and fly ash are more suitable as SCMs than metakaolin without affecting the properties. Particularly inner cities have been affected by these environmental changes because of the materials used to build houses, streets and infrastructure. The most common building material is concrete. It shows a specific heat capacity, while the heat conductivity for Standard concrete is low. Thus, the use of concrete generates a high capacity of heat storage. In addition, extensive soil sealing also contributes to the temperature rise of inner city areas compared to their surroundings. To mitigate this so-called urban heat island effect, a self-cooling concrete paver was developed. This paver is able to store water. The evaporation of the water at elevated temperatures provides a cooling effect. This paper focuses on determination of this new paver’s capability to cool the surface and the surrounding. The new paver’s cooling Qualities were analysed in a series of laboratory tests. To prove the results outside of laboratory conditions, two fields (12 m × 8 m) with self-cooling and reference pavers were installed in Spain. This paper presents and discusses the results of the tests. Correlation between reduced surface temperature of the self-cooling concrete pavers and the air temperature is examined. The mode of operation of these admixtures varies, rather affecting either the liquid phase or the solid particles in the dispersion, both causing strong interactions with the mortar or concrete system, and significant changes in their rheological behaviour. However, due to policy changes, cut backs in public investments as well as a fall in the number of employments in the private sector have been observed in many countries. Furthermore a shift from registered companies to informal contractors could be noticed. Many contractors offer services they do not provide permanently or for which the required equipment has to be borrowed. A study that was published in 2000 about the situation in Tanzania pointed out that only ca. 15% of the enterprises that offer concrete works own a concrete mixer. The building practice with concrete varies widely over the African continent. Whereas the level of technology and the infrastructure for cement and concrete in South Africa is elaborate, in East Africa and particularly those that were heavily suffering from civil war during the nineties of the last century, the availability of cement and concrete is poor and these materials are far from being everyday building practice. Most of the population relies on indigenous forms of construction requiring wood obtained from felling of forest trees and ultimately contributing to de-forestation. Informal settlements in South-Africa and Kenya are literal evidence where originally green natural vegetation has been turned into artificial desert-like landscapes. The addition of SPs in cement-based systems affects the early properties. Although the interaction of the cement particles with various SPs has been extensively researched, there still exists limited research on the interaction of SPs with supplementary cementitious materials such as rice husk ash (RHA). This paper investigates the rheological properties and early hydration kinetics of RHA-blended systems with three types of SPs, a polycarboxylate ether (PCE) and two lignosulphonates (LS-acc and LS-ret). In rheological properties, the addition of SP causes an initial improvement of workability as the yield stress is significantly reduced. The pastes with PCE and LS-acc show a slight increase of yield stress over time whereas pastes with LS-ret tend to lower the yield stress slightly over time, further improving the workability. Without SP, pastes with RHA show a lower yield stress but an increase in plastic viscosity as cement is further replaced with RHA. The addition of the LS SPs is observed to lower the plastic viscosity but remains constant with further replacement of cement with RHA. This indicates that LS SPs further adsorbs on RHA particles and hydration products produced causing dispersion of the particles within the system. In early hydration kinetics, pastes with PCE retard hydration and the degree of retardation is further increased with LS SPs. In the presence of RHA, the retardation of LS SP systems is significantly reduced. The pastes with PCE show more ettringite in the SEM micrographs, but is observed to be shorter needles. This indicates an initial good workability for PCE. However, C-S-H and CH were observed to be low in quantity, whereby the pastes with LS show more nucleation sites for C-S-H and CH. The ettringite needles in the LS systems were similar in quantity and more elongated in some cases but not abundant as in the PCE systems. In this work, Portland cement-blended pastes containing mineral admixtures designed for improving particle packing were evaluated in the presence of low- and high-charge polycarboxylate-based superplasticizers. The powders were obtained from basic oxygen furnace slag, iron ore tailings, quartz mining tailings, and quartzite mining tailings. The zeta-potentials of the particles were obtained via electrophoretic mobility. The flow properties were evaluated by rheological tests performed in a Couette type rheometer. The hydration kinetics was evaluated by isothermal calorimetry and an adapted method based on the Vicat needle test. The high-charge PCE and the finer mineral admixtures produced more stable blends. Coarser mineral admixtures led to increased flowability and delayed hydration compared to finer ones. Steel slag powders presented the most significant plasticizer effects, but also the largest setting delays and segregation tendency. Quartz-rich superfines reduced the setting delays caused by the superplasticizers. In summary, both superplasticizers were effective in improving flow properties, but the high-charge PCE was effective in preventing segregation in pastes containing mineral admixtures coarser and heavier than cement. Due to the high water demand for the material, superplasticizers (SPs) are essential to improve the performance. However, the interaction between the SPs and RHA systems is limited. This paper investigates the interaction of the binders with three SPs, i.e. two polycarboxylate ethers (PCEs) and one lignosulphonate (LS). The investigations are performed on blended systems of mortar containing various percentages of RHA and limestone powder (LSP). LSP is used in this research to improve the workability of the mortar. The results from the zeta potential (ZP) shows that the SPs are extremely dependent on the pH of the suspension. At higher pH values such as in a cementitious system, the ZP becomes less negative indicating that the ions in the suspension interact with the carboxyl groups in the backbone of the polymers thus reducing the surface charges of the SP. The mini-slump flow shows that the workability of the blended mortar systems is significantly improved with the addition of SPs. LS systems with increasing RHA is observed to have similar workability as the control mix over time. The compressive strength test results show increased strength for all mortar specimens with added RHA and LSP at later ages. This is because the rheology of SCC depends not only on degree of cement hydration, but also on the adsorption of superplasticizers – mostly polycarboxylate based polymers (PCE) -, which is affected by the time and hydration progress. Due to the variety of PCEs and mixture compositions for SCC a prediction of the rheology at varying temperatures is complicated. The charge densities of PCEs as well as the water to solid ratio in the paste are identified to be the main decisive parameters for robust fresh concrete properties. Rheometric concrete investigations with different SCC mixture compositions and varied anionic charge densities of the PCE were conducted. SCC which is rich in powder components showed robust performance at low temperatures while SCC with low powder content was favourable at high temperatures. High charge density PCE pointed out to be very robust at low temperatures but at high temperatures it significantly reduced the flow retention. Low charge density PCE could not generate self-compacting properties at low temperatures but retained the flow performance over sufficiently long time. Based on considerations about particle interactions and adsorption mechanisms of PCEs, the relevant processes are explained and options for the development of robust mixture compositions for individual temperature ranges are itemised. Hence cities are growing and as a result the building density and the land sealing rise. Concrete as commonly used building material in urban structures provides a high heat storage capacity. Therefore the microclimate in cities has become warmer than in the surrounding areas. This phenomenon is called Urban Heat Island Effect. To mitigate this situation a large scale application of self-cooling concrete pavers is an approach to reduce the urban heat island effect. Making use of evaporation enthalpy, this new type of pavements counterbalances the absorption of solar radiation and the subsequent transfer of heat to the surrounding environment. The typical double-layer structure of concrete paving stones can be maintained. The mass concrete acts as a water storage layer and is covered by a permeable face concrete. As the different requirements of these layers demand different concrete mixtures, they are developed and optimised for their respective functions. This paper depicts how high range water reducing agents (HRWRAs) interact with clinker and hydration phases, and it discusses the important role of the charge density of polycarboxylic HRWRAs in the way the rheology is affected. Based on the rheometric investigations on SCC mixture compositions with different water to powder ratios (w/p) and observations of their pastes' Vicat setting times, the study shows that increasing charge densities of the HRWRA and decreasing w/p reduce the flow retention and have lesser retarding effect on the setting. Based on the test results and discussions optimization procedures for the mixture composition and the HRWRA modification are suggested to achieve optimized performance for varying environmental situations and highest robustness for specific conditions. Since superplasticizers have become state of technology, today, concrete is more and more adjusted to flowable consistencies. This often goes along with the risk of segregation, which can be effectively avoided by adding stabilising agents supplementary to superplasticizers. Stabilising agents are typically based on polysaccharides such as cellulose, sphingan gum, or starch. Starch clearly distinguishes in its effect on rheology from other polysaccharides, mainly due to the strong influence of amylopectin on the dispersion and stabilisation of particles. Based on rheometric investigations on cementitious and limestone based dispersions with different volumetric water to solid ratios, the mode of operation of modified potato starch is explained in comparison to a sphingan gum. It is shown that the stabilising effect of starch in a coarsely dispersed system is mainly depending upon the water to solid ratio and that above a certain particle volume threshold starch mainly affects the dynamic yield stress of dispersions, while plastic viscosity is affected only to a minor degree. Sphingans operate more independent of the particle volume in a coarsely dispersed system and show significantly higher effect on the plastic viscosity than on the yield stress. In systems incorporating superplasticizers, influences of both stabilising agents on yield stress retreat into the background, while both observed polysaccharides maintain their effect on the plastic viscosity. Für die Konformitätsbewertung stellt in diesem Zusammenhang insbesondere die Kusum-Methode (kumulierte Summen, aus dem Englischen cusum – cumulative sum) ein Novum dar. Eigentlich ist die Kusum-Methode aber nicht für die Konformitätsbewertung entwickelt worden, sondern vielmehr für die Produktionskontrolle. Der Unterschied zwischen Konformitätsbewertung und Produktionskontrolle ergibt sich daraus, dass die Konformitätskontrolle eine Bedeutung für die öffentliche Sicherheit hat und dass eindeutige technische Grenzwerte vorliegen müssen, die nicht unterschritten werden dürfen, während die Produktionssteuerung ein Werkzeug mit frei wählbaren Grenzwerten für Hersteller ist. Apart from Northern Africa and South Africa in particular, cement plants are scarce resulting in highly unstable cement pricing. Clinker and cement are imported from overseas, e.g. from Portugal, Turkey, Pakistan, Indonesia, and China. Imports are typically determined by the lowest price, and as a result the countries of origin of products vary regularly yielding large scatter of properties. Quality control and a good quality infrastructure are thus of utmost importance for the safety of the populace, an issue, which is actually often neglected. With funding of the German Metrology Institute (PTB) and support of the SPIN project, a proficiency testing scheme for cement testing according to EN 196 was set up for African laboratories. Proficiency testing schemes, also called round robins, are inter-laboratory performance comparisons allowing participants to evaluate themselves against pre-established criteria. They are a powerful tool to help laboratories improve their performance as well as demonstrate their competences to accreditation bodies or customers. 26 laboratories from 20 nations, 18 of which from Africa, participated. The BAM Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing acted as coordinator and provider of the scheme. The aim of the round robin was to interpret the submitted data further beyond the pure statistic analyses. The data provided a positive picture of the performance of the participants in general, but it also exhibited a number of technical fields that need improvement. The paper provides the general results of the scheme and analyses identified strengths and weak points based on the submitted and non submitted data as well as on discrepancies from the EN 196 procedures during measurements. The application of EN standards for material testing is critically discussed and since quality infrastructure is also always an issue between industrial and political stakeholders, suggestions for the mitigation of the identified shared problems are given. For many decades the water to cement ratio (w/c) was the major influencing factor for the performance of concrete. Due to the need to adjust a consistency, which still allowed reasonable workability, the w/c was typically significantly higher than technologically reasonable. Rheology modifying admixtures Support adjusting the concrete consistency largely independent of the w/c. It was only after the invention of the first superplasticizers that modern concrete technology significantly evolved in terms of flowability, strength, and durability, and only due to the steady evolution of the technology modern innovations, such as Self-Compacting Concrete, Ultra-High-Performance Concrete, or Engineered Cementitious Composites were made possible. Today’s superplasticizers are extremely versatile and can be adjusted to individual technologicalspecifications. However, the other side of the coin of versatility is that cementitious Systems incorporating superplasticizers have become more sensitive against environmental influences, such as the environmental temperature, which may cause unwanted effects or demand for supplementary admixture use such as stabilizing admixtures. T1 - Powder-bed 3D printing by selective activation of magnesium phosphate cement: Determining significant processing parameters and their effect on mechanical strength N2 - The present work addresses powder bed binder jetting additive manufacturing by selective magnesium phosphate cement activation. Despite the potential of this technology to aid the digitalization of the construction industry, the effect of processing parameters on the mechanical performance of printed materials has not yet been studied to generate a guideline for the further development of the technology. Statistical methodologies were used to screen the effect of four printing process parameters (printing speed, layer thickness, raster angle, and build direction on flexural and compressive strength). As the exploited technology works with constant fluid pressure, the physical interpretation of the effect of each factor can be considered taking into account the interactions between the binder materials in the powder bed. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicated that printing speed and layer thickness significantly affect mechanical performances. Furthermore, the layout of samples for the printing process is preferable to be parallel the printhead movement. An anisotropic behavior was observed, and the samples subjected to compressive forces parallel to the layer plane possessed lower strength values. This effect can be interpreted as a result of a weak area of low density in between layers, leading to a pronounced delamination under compression. Even though the strength of the printed material is not suitable for a structural concrete, it can be marginally improved by design of experiment and optimized for non-structural applications, such as for porous artificial stone. Design of experiment coupled with ANOVA methods can be used in the future to support the development of novel material mixtures, thus expanding the fields of application of this novel additive manufacturing technology.
