T1 - Full scale fatigue testing of original truss members and connections N2 - The analysis of the I-35 W bridge collapse in Mineapolis, Minnesota (NTSB 2008) initiated a discussion about gusset plates in truss girders again. In the past, the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) has performed series of laboratory fatigue tests on original riveted truss girders in their laboratories. Four 10 m long original truss girders were tested under different fatigue loading. Gusset plates connecting the most highly stressed diagonal truss members with the chords were the weakest elements of this type of structure. A strengthening method was tested for extension of the fatigue life. The test results were input in assessment procedures for further main girders being historical monuments. The results of test series performed at BAM and other fatigue tests in the world were sources for the Recommendation for the assessment of the remaining fatigue life, issued by the European Convention for Constructional Steelwork (ECCS) together with the European Joint Research Center (JRC).
